285.0. "Jerry's Condition" by SCOONR::GLADU () Fri Aug 14 1992 13:39

This topic is opened to concentrate discussions regarding Jerry's current
condition into one place. Most "unofficial" reports describe his apparent
condition as "congestive heart failure" although the causes vary from
report to report. Please note that this is a rumored condition and that
the "official" stand is "exhaustion". He is apparently resting at home
and expected to recover in a few weeks.

Feel free to discuss your thoughts and feelings here. Please keep wild
    speculations to a minimum.

    					Thanks,

BOB WEIR interview on KPFA 8/12/92 by David Gans

Q: What can you tell us about what's going on?

Weir: Jerry's been pushing himself way the hell too hard, and it caught up
with him, and he's going to be down for a little bit.... We don't know how
    long.

I saw him today, and [laughs] he looked better than the last time I saw
him. It's wonders what a tan'll do for you. He's takin' it easy, and he
reckons he probably should be doing that. He has a bunch of doctors telling
    him that.

Q: And so far as we know, the fall tour is still going to commence on
    September 9 as scheduled?

Weir: I'd give it a 50/50. I don't know. It has not yet been canceled.
We're looking at various options, like for instance canceling the first few
dates - or the whole thing, if the doctors don't like the way it looks. But
you know, he's bounced back before, and he bounces back quick.

Q: Is he seeing doctors, then?

    Weir: Yeah.

Q: This is a guy who's pretty pathological about not liking to be in the
    hospital -

Weir: Well, he won't go in the hospital, so we're bringing the doctors
    out to see him.

Q: How are you feeling about all this?

Weir: Well, I could use some time off, too.

Q: What are you going to do?

Weir: Write, hopefully. I haven't had time to write for a long time.

Q: Are you still planning to do an album with Rob Wasserman?

    Weir: Yes.

Q: And do you have any idea when you're going to start doing that?

Weir: When we get damn well ready! My guess is next winter.

Q: And Don Was is going to produce it?

Weir: He's interested in doing that, yeah.

Q: Want to talk about politics for a second?

    Weir: Why not?

Q: A couple of months ago you had an op-ed piece in the New York Times about
a bill that was going through from the two senators from Montana. Can you
give us some background on that and let us know us what's happening with it
    now?

Weir: When it was introduced it was called the Montana National Forest
Wilderness Management Act, and it was anything but that. It was the
Wilderness MISmanagement Act, and it was just basically a wholesale timber
giveaway - our National Forest to timber companies. We would subsidize the
building of roads into wilderness areas so they could cut down all the trees
and take them away and make them into deserts.
I've been [to these places], and it's gorgeous. These are
thousand-year-old forests and whatnot; the trees are old, beautiful, tall,
magnificent - and they really want them. The loggers really want them. They
    belong to us!
The bill would have us pay for the destruction and removal, and I don't
think it's something that we want to do, and so I've been opposing this. And
it looks like it's not going to get through Congress altogether intact like it
    originally looked like it would.

Q: Are you one of those people that believes it's a good idea to register and
    vote?

Weir: I think this year particularly! I always register and I always vote. I
don't know if it's a knee-jerk reaction or what, but this year I feel like
there's something to vote for. We had an election kind of similar to this one
in 1932, when Hoover wanted to get re-elected. Hoover was doing basically
about the same thing that our administration is doing, that being pursuing
right-wing politics, and the rich were getting richer and the poor were
getting poorer. That escalated into a depression much like we're having now.
And he wanted to hang in there, but he got real unpopular 'cause people were
starting to get kind of upset with the way things were going, and they voted
him out of office and we got an administration voted in that turned things
around for us. And it looks like we could do that again.
Loath would I be to tell people _how_ to vote, but I would tell people
to vote. Vote your heart, vote your conscience. Don't vote your wallet.
That's my opinion, but you've got to vote. It's an American's blessed duty.
And to vote, you've got to register, so do it today.

Q: Well, thanks for calling in, Bob. I'm sure you know that all the prayers
and good wishes of the thousands and thousands of Deadheads around here are
with you and with Jerry and with the band.

Weir: He's gonna be just fine. It's just a matter of how soon. I think when
he comes around, everyone's going to like what they see.

Q: Is it really true that we're not going to get to see you guys [in the Bay
Area] til the end of the year now?

    Weir: We'll see.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 14, 1992

As the week has passed, we've learned that Jerry Garcia's recuperation will
take longer than we'd initially hoped. We remain certain that he will
return to full good health, but the rest and care he needs will require us
to cancel the fall East Coast tour. Jerry is in the care of a physician at
home and is on the mend, but it will take time.

According to Jerry's physician, Dr. Randy Baker, "Jerry Garcia's health
peroblems are primarily chronic rather than acute. He has some lung disease
related to years of smoking and this has put some stress on his heart, which
has become slightly enlarged. He does not have and has not had fluid in the
lungs or kidney failure, and he did not suffer from a collapse. He does
have borderline diabetes, which should resolve with weight loss. His
current problems are being managed with mild medication and he is at home
and experiencing no discomfort. Jerry has agreed to a program of stopping
smoking, losing weight, exercise and dietary changes. As this is
accomplished he should regain good health and continue performing for many
 years."

We realize that this comes as very disturbing news for many people, so let
us be clear: he IS ill, but the right steps are being taken.

As Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh commented, "I talked to Elvis this
morning myself and he said they already have too many guitarists up there,
and he also doesn't need any competition in the postage stamp market." More
seriously, Lesh added, "We expect to be performing with Jerry before the
end of the year even though right now he's dead tired."

Thank you for your love and prayers.

 Best,

 Grateful Dead

Oh!!! Thats terrific news, especially since it came from
the doctor. I gotta laugh.....Jerry's to stubborn to go
to the hospital, so they brought the hospital to him :-)

Well, with encouragement from his fans and loved ones, Jerry
will probably be able to adjust to a new more cautious
lifestyle. I still want to send a shirt off, (with *my*

Refunds for the Fall Tour will be given at full ticket price(including
the service charge if you were the original purchaser). If someone else
got the tickets from GDTS and you send them back then you only get face
value for the tix. Here's the address to send GDTS tix back for a
    refund....

Grateful Dead Ticket Sales - Refund
    Box C-S 8150

No date was given as to when to begin sending tix back in but I assume
if you have your complete set of what you ordered, refunds will be
processed immediately. Also no info on how long it will take to receive
your refund after sending it in.

Good Luck and let's all think of good things to come for Jerr.

One of the official reports had the md saying jerry is borderline
diabetic. With all the care he's under recently, I'd tend
to doubt that this has happened again. Maybe someone heard a

just saw a blurb in the Denver Post related to this note...
seems this guy who owns a pizza place in Vail is afraid his get-well
card to Jerry will end up in the trash. He and "any deadhead that wants
to" will climb the Mt. of the Holy Cross (14,000ft) this weekend and
do a video tape at the top and send it to Jerry. Too bad I have plans
already! Tumbledown isn't that far from Vail (on the poor side of the
pass) but I won't be at Tumbledown this weekend! %^(

Well, I read a rumor today that the entire illness thing is just a coverup and
in fact Jerry has been abducted by aliens and forced on an intergallactic
acoustic solo tour.

But, the official word according to the hotline (paraphrased) is that Jerry
is following doctor's orders (improved diet, exercise, less smoking) and there
is a chance (not a promise) of shows before the end of the year.

From the WELL today....

Q: Hi, this is Gary Lambert, your Grateful Dead Hour correspondent
on the Jerry Garcia front. I have an informed source here with
me: Phil Lesh. Phil, a lot of people have been wondering what's
going on, what the band's plans are, and most important, how
       Jerry's health is.

Lesh: Jerry's health is improving radically, I would say. He semms to
have lost a lot of weight, and he's moving around very well. He
       looks good to me.

I saw him this morning when our kids started their first day of
       school.

On the other hand, we aren't planning to go back to work before
December. He's going to have a long, slow recovery back to health,
I think. But we don't want to push it.

Q: Without nailing down any dates, there is at least a certain amount
of confidence that there will be some Grateful Dead activity, if
not late this year, early next?

Lesh: I would say you can bet on that.

Q: How have you been spending your autumn vacation, Phil?

Lesh: I have been cammping in the mountains and swimming with my kids,
getting them ready to go back to school, and all that kind of
       good stuff.
