279.0. "Ice Cream" by TLE::ABBOT (J. R. "Bob" Dobbs in 92) Thu Aug 06 1992 19:20

    Ice cream!

What would summer be without it?

    Anyone have any memories?

Here's one - there used to be this place in Hollis (closed maybe 10
years ago) run by an old couple. Made their own ice cream back before
Steve's made it fashionable. Going into the place was like a trip back
into the 40's. I didn't go there too many times but it was good.

Another great place was Mike's in Milford. Young guy, started it as a
hobby and then it got too big. He even got his mother into it by using
home baked brownies and cookies in the ice cream. Then he moved to
Wilton to start a factory and it got too much for him so he quit. :-(

    Scott,
Thanks for the offer to ask Ben&Jerry what the story is with
White Russian, Peach, Wavy Gravy, etc. The world needs more
people like you! ;-) And keep us informed!!

hmmm, while I liked the concept, I was never a big fan of cherries,
so Cherry Garcia left me a little cold. Ice karaumba!

Anyone ever been on the B&J factory tour? I hear it's pretty cool. It
costs $3 but it goes to charity. You get lots of samples too.

How far west can you get B&J? Is it national yet?

I bought some Cherry Garcia for my father, he thought it was great but
    didn't "get" the name.

memories of ice cream?....

I remember my very first triple decker cone when I was a way little girl.
I remember it in my hand in the middle of Baskin Robbins, and then on the
floor within 10 seconds. ;^( That was my very last triple decker cone too.

Just rode the new bike out to Parker's for some ice cream (they carry
Farr Farr's). The last hill on Mason road was a bit of work, but with ice
cream at the top, I made it. :) They were out of the interesting flavours,
though, so I settled for Mint Chocolate Chip (It was green! :( :( I hate it
when they do that!) and Oreo.

Ben & Jerry's has lots of good flavours. I always have a hard time
deciding between Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Mint
Chocolate Cookie (it's not green :) :), and they don't use Oreo's any more),
and Coffee Heathbar Crunch. The Blueberry icecream they do is also good,
I hope it comes out soon.

One of my favourite flavours, which I haven't been able to find in
years is Cinnamon Nutmeg. I used to get this at Herril's (sp?) in
Northhampton, Mass, but I haven't seen it there in years, though I don't
get down that way as often as I used to.

There is a place nearby where I live called "Pinecroft Dairy",
it used to be great, but then "Bergson's" bought it out and it's
never been as good, although it is still pretty good...it's in
    West Boyalston.
I've been to Kimball's.....that place is great, I can't believe
how big their super sundae is!!
I've also been to B&J in VT. took the tour and everything, way cool!
they have stuff that they don't sell in the stores.

a trip to Kimballs is in order this weekend.

Had the B&J Chocolate Fudge Brownie last night! Mmmmmmmm!
Definitely a good choice with the marinated swordfish! (And by
the way, Dave is a *mean* cook!)

Hope I worked off the B&J at Truffle, even though I didn't do

I've been to the original Ben & Jerry's, but didn't take the tour.
They have one dish called the "Vermonster" that consists of 20 or so
scoops plus all the extras you could think of. Sick!

The best ice cream used to be from Bishop's in Bethlehem, NH. They
moved to Littleton (1/4 mile from my house -- yikes!), and went
slightly downhill a few years later. My inside source tells me that
they use Lotta Rock vanilla as a base instead of making their own now.
:^( Supposedly, almost all of the "homemade" shops do the same. Ever
wonder how the Mom & Pop operation could serve 500 lbs. of ice cream a
night with hardly any factory space?

Kimballs, by far, has my vote for the best ice cream around. I remember
going there in our old station wagon while growing up. I remember small
cones, equivalent to what they serve today, going for 27 cents! I could never
finish those suckers as a kid - too much ice cream.

There used to be an ice cream place in Harvard called Stones. One of our
local dairy farmers said that Stones ice cream was always better quality
then kimballs, yet, for some reason, everyone preferred kimballs. he used
to supply those types of places w/ dairy products.

does kimballs still make their ice cream on the premises? i also remember
when they used to have cows, etc. now, they replaced them with an ugly
driving range (sorry all you golfers!).....

279.24SLOHAN::FIELDSBetter make it through todayFri Aug 07 1992 15:159
I used to go there when I was short like lisa, I was maybe 5 or 6 :')
the last time I went there they had cows and they made their own IC but
I've heard that is no longer the case...no problem JC I don't like
driving ranges anyway....I don't believe in practice ! Im damn good
with out it :') I don't like to waste a good drive on them when I could
do it on a fairway instead ! gee should I start a DEChead golf note
    now, huh ? ;-]

Farfar's is good, but they do tend to be overly colorful. I remember
Mike (of Mike's) telling me that people complained that his mint ice
    cream wasn't green.

    A few other good places:
Goldenrod - on the 28 bypass south of Manchester. It used to be run by
an older man, made their own ice cream and various food (their onion
rings are excellent, and you have a choice of coatings), then he sold
it so someone else and they took shortcuts like using factory ice
cream. Last year the old guy was back making ice cream, although he's
    no longer owner.

Carter's in Bradford Mass (south of Haverhill). Like a scaled down
Kimball's with very much the same flavors and huge servings (their
small is 2 huge scoops! and cheap!!). I'm not sure what road it's on
but if you're familiar with the Bradford section of Haverhill (by
Bradford College), head south of the green with the church.

I remember seeing zucchini ice cream somewhere.

I took the tour of B&J's factory,.. the one thats pretty close
to Stowe... If you're into ice cream (which I'm not really,.. not
into sweets much at all but Alicia is) its like a slice of heaven...

Checking out the free samples of the "experimental" flavors still
under development at the secret B&J's research center was fun. Got
to try "cookie dough" before it was an official flavor (now that was
    really rilly sweet,... blech!)

Also wen to the original B&J's before they went big,.. that was in
Burlington where you could slurp up a Sunday while Watching a movie on
the side of the wall of the building next door on I think it was
    Saturday nites,...

I used to like sweets back then (what happened?)

There is a Ben and Jerry's ice cream store in little old Stamford, CT. opened
up there about 2-3 years ago. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. They were
just starting to really expand around that time.

The last time I went to Kimball's it was after a DEChead dinner at the Yangtzee

As mentioned elsewhere, it's opening day. I don't know
if they're open at lunch, but I intend to find out.

If anyone's interested, I'd welcome the company (around
noon)...nice day for it...

I actually lost five pounds between the Albany and
Nassau shows (didn't drink enough beer, I guess), so I
feel obligated to make it up...lest I start to waist
away! ;-)

I miss the daily ZKO Ice Cream bar, since my group moved
south, and Kimball's is only slightly further away
than the ZKO Cafeteria was last year. ;-) Dave W., do
they still do that up there? That used to be a staple
of my diet...

They sure do. Kimball's is probably closer to you than
the ZKO caf is from me... :-)

The best ice cream in the whole world (and I've tried it in enough
places to qualify as a judge) is in Moscow. They don't have a lot of
treats over there but the ice cream is WONDRFUL!

So is the bread. Anywhere in Russia you go, the bread is always
    world-class.

Strangely enough, the domestic vodka over there is pretty rancid...
