I love "So Many Roads." It reminds me of some of the songs that Jerry does
with JGB. I think it's going to work out to be a classic along the lines of
"Morning Dew" ... slow, emotional, building up to a powerful end ... with
space for a nice guitar solo or two.

Haven't heard the others yet ....

Corina- not much to it lyric wise, but it has a funky beat...
it's a fun tune, but they should jam a little more on it,
Jerry should do a little more with the lead, he just kinda
gets some feedback and sustains it, never really wails.

So Many Roads- a lot of people think it's sort of a cross between
"Black Muddy River" and "SOTM", and think Jerry is
getting trapped into this "formula" of writing these
slow songs.....it's alright with me, I love those
Jerry ballad type songs, it gives him a chance to
really build on his solo's, not to mention that Robert
Hunter is Great! at writing these types of songs.

Wave to the Wind- sort of jazzy, similar to "Eyes", I couldn't make
much out of the lyrics...it sounds like it's difficult
for Phil to sing, he ends up mumbling sometimes just
because the song is so fast. It's definetly got jamming
potential.

Long, Long Way- it sounds odd at first hearing Vince sing,.. not a bad
song, it kinda grows on ya', I found myself humming it
after only hearing it once.

All the songs still need some debugging here and there, I'm curious
to see how long they keep playing them, and which ones they keep.

I think the best one is Long, Long, Long.....Way to go Home (the Vince
one).

Nice bluesy touch, with a LOT of room for Jerry to take off in.

Yes I reviewed the 2nd set of 2-24-92 and out of the 4 tunes Vince's
was the one I liked best, then Phil's, Jerry's and Bob's (a studio tune)

I heard two of the new ones (that I remember) at the Friday night Nassau
show:

- Long Long Long Way

Very cool. It is about time they let Vinny sign! He has some
great lung ... The boyz should consider letting Vinny sing
Lovelight - or, at least have Vinny help with lovelight by
singed altenating lyrics. Anyways, the song rocked very
nice... enjoyed it.

- Wave to the Wind

Don't like it at all. Just doesn't fit it that well, I think.
Perhaps over time I will change this opinion....

Corina - Much better than I expected it to be. It has a slow, funky,
almost reggae kind of groove to it. When they played it on
wednesday (3-18), it seemed very solid as if they had been
playing it for years.

Wave to the Wind - I'd have to agree with the earlier replies, this
one doesn't fit. It's way too fast for Phil to sing and the
jamming sections didn't seem to go anywhere. Maybe it will
improve over time.

Well, I saw each of them twice (I think) between Landover
and Nassau, here's my humble opinion...

Corina - like the beat, real good potential but the part I
didn't like was the "Coriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiina"
Don't know why, maybe because I had a preconceived
notion from what I heard from the Oakland shows.
kinda reminded me of "Puriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiina" chow chow chow!
:)

Long Long Long Way Home - I liked this one alot, especially the
2nd time around, Vince seems to enjoy his shot at the
mic!

So Many Roads - Another good one for me. I agree that it is
typical Jerry (whatever that means!) but that's just
fine with me.

Wave to the Wind - Well, this one just doesn't quiet do it for
me. Mostly because I couldn't understand a thing
Phil was saying except "Wave to the..." about a million
times over. In fact the 1st time I heard it I thought
he was say "Do the Wave"...??! :} A few people around
me were dancing like fish - very humorous!

Looking forward to getting some tapes and be better equiped to
form an opinion though. It definately was nice to hear some
new material.

Interesting, a lot of the people I spoke to think the jam in
"Wave to the Wind" sounds a *lot* like the jazzy jam in "Unbroken
Chain" and they seem to think the song can really go somewhere
because of it. But most people in here think exactly the opposite.
I'll have to hear this one for myself, I guess.
246.10RANGER::NOURSEMon Mar 23 1992 16:538
I think Wave to the Wind has a lot of really twisted jamming potential.

I like Corina pretty well, and it has potential as well,

Long-long-long is really good and should get even better.

So many roads is another slowdown song. At least it should help
them not wear out the other ones as much.
246.11CLOSUS::BARNESWed Mar 25 1992 14:435
from tapes I just recieved yesterday, I like Corina the least of
all...in fact I thought it was rather lame, in fact I said to Patty
one time " this sucks!"
The rest I liked and see potential in.

Hey Now,

I think 'Corina' is Bob's answer to all the critics who say that
his songs are too angular and have too many weird chord changes.
Here's a song that has *no* chord changes! (Or pratically none:-)
I'll take Leadbelly's version any day.

'Wave to the Wind' has gotten *much* better, but I'm not sure
exactly what that means. Everyone in the band seems to know the song
by now. The first few times it was...um...pretty bad.

'Long.... Way to Go Home' was excellent to begin with. It was
rockin' in Oakland even before the house opened. I think it's a fine
addition.

Jerry's new tune is a Jerry tune. Nice rick and roll with the
emphasis on the roll.

Rilly! Is that the /Joel Finkel?

Howdy and welcome back,..

'scuse the naivety,.. but do I read correctly that the song that
most are calling "Corina" is actually a cover? All this time I was
thinking it was a Bob original,..

Anyway, Joel,. if it is a cover, than that criticism of Bobby tunes
still holds (that is if it held in the first place,.. subject for
debate obviously, but FWIW,. I see why people say that). The reason
that the criticsim would still hold is that it should be applied to
songs Bob wrote,... not just "covered". Its the songs he writes
(like Victim) that (rightfully) get the "angular" criticism...

for a couple months. Then I'll be gone again :-(

But then I may be back again :-)

I've really missed this conference and all the wonderful people
herein! It's *really* nice to be back.

As for Corina...the version I know is by Leadbelly (I *think*).
Bob's version is a *complete* reworking of it; he changed it from a
country blues (with melody) to a ...well... really slow shuffle with
almost no melody. At the Mardi Gras show last month they played it
during the second set, coming out if AIKO, if my memory serves me. It
worked okay then. But the other night in Detroit they closed the first
set with it...not the place for it IMHO.

Thanks again for the warm welcome!

well then,.. the "angular" criticism of Bobby can now be met with tapes

246.26New tunes - overall I LIKE 'em!MR4DEC::WENTZELLExpert Only <><>Thu Apr 02 1992 13:2427
I gave the new tunes a listen last night, and after one listen I like them.
There seems to be a lot of room for growth, but they all have a solid
foundation. Can't wait to hear what the boys do with them over time.

Quick reviews (bear in mind I really have no idea what I'm talking about
musically speaking and these are just my impressions):

I expected a different sound from Vince's voice after hearing his backing
vocals and his verses here and there in Maggie's and The Weight. I like Long
Long Long Long Long Long....Long Way Home a lot though, nice blues tune.

Wave to the Wind reminds me of Eyez, but it is different enough to be
intersting (plus it a Phil tune!!). I can see the comparison to Unbroken Chain
that someone else made as well. Phil seems to be rushing through the vocals
and needs to be more comfortable with it, then it will really take off IMO.

So Many Roads - this is the Jerry we all know and love! 8^) The sound and
feel of this song fits well into Jerry repitoire, but I need a few more listens
to get to know the lyrics. A very nice song.

Corina seems a little flat, but with lots of room for growth. I'll give this
one some time before I really decide how much I like it.

Remember, your milage will vary!

to respond to my own question - I have finally heard
the new songs this weekend, thanks Don, and I was
listening again to a tape with a couple of them
on it on the way in this morning...

although Vince's new song wasn't on the tape I listened
to today, out of the four, this is my favorite.
Can't comment more on it now cause it's been a few
days since I heard it - but I know I thought it was great.

the two I listened to today were So Many Roads and
Wave to the Wind.

My, Jerry is getting more and more soulful the older
he gets, isn't he? ;-) Good solid song but I hope
that he still has some rockin' music left in him for
the future...

I didn't like Wave to the Wind when I first heard it
but upon listening to it some more I guess what makes
the song hard for me to enjoy is Phil. He seems to
be struggling getting all the words out - too many
words or something. The music is interesting but
the vocals take away from it.

Can't remember what I think of Corina.

Seriously though,.. I don't know about 'rock and roll' anymore,. I
think the best daze of Jerry playing Rock and rol are over,..
But it does seem that some fine days of soulful blues and jazz
are still left,.. and they even get more... poignant? or meaningful?
or 'heavier' or whatever,.. Jerry really can still play from the heart
in these veins which suits me fine :-)

It is nice to hear him kick out some rock and roll still anyway too,.
even if his heart doesn't seem to be that into it,.. to me anyway.

geez - try to have a conversation about, of ALL things,
the Grateful Dead, and even THAT gets turned into a binge
on puns ;-)

back to Jerry - yeah, /, I agree that this seems to be
the direction he has been headed for quite awhile, definately
these slow tunes are where you can feel his soul nowadays.
I don't think this "slowing down" necessarily has to come with age,
but I think it comes from the experiences that fill his life
and how he is dealing with it. He has said that he sees his
music much as a painter sees the colors of his painting. I
wish I could do that too ;-), but on a different level, I CAN
"see" the colors that these more reflective songs paint.
I can definately relate to what he's saying and "painting"
these days - but I'm feeling pretty low these days and I
hope to snap out of it and therefore I project myself onto
him and hope that he too can snap out of it. Maybe this
whole thing just simply is my projection, in which case,
NEVERMIND!

As long as the Grateful Dead can still take me into space
with their music, I'll be there. That's what I love about
it, no matter what tempo...
