You know the bit about the boy dying of cancer in England who's trying to
collect enough business cards to get into the Guiness book of world records?
Circulates about every year ... I always assumed it was a myth. Well, it
was in the Nashua Telegraph on Sunday. I mean, if it's in the newspaper, it
must be true, right?

230.3TLE::ABBOTTue Jan 07 1992 13:528
The story about the kid in England collecting postcards was true. I
think he's in his 20's now and long since cured of cancer. Guinness
closed off the category so others wouldn't continue flooding the post
office with cards. It seems every so often the story pops up again in
traditional urban myth fashion with slightly changed details.

Subj:	Drug warning is an urban legend

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but the "Blue Star Acid
Warning" is an urban legend, an untrue story that circulates
about, rather like the tales of the alligators in the New York
City sewers and rumors that AT&T is about to buy Digital.

Full documentation of this legend can be found in Jan Brunvand's
book, "The Choking Doberman and Other 'New' Urban Legends." This
book is available in paperback from most area bookstores.

In short, the story has its origins in an off-the-cuff remark
made by a police chief in the mid-west in the early seventies. A
bust had been made of a large quantity of LSD, and they found
blotters (not tattoos) with blue stars on them. A reporter asked
if any LSD had been found on these blotters. The police chief
said that he hadn't, but he had heard that the police in San
Diego had. The story blossomed from that humble beginning.

This is a hoax. This is a classic urban legend. This is a myth about
little acid-soaked stamps being sold to school kids. This is a myth. I
    repeat, this is a myth!

There is a fellow named Jan Brunvand who has collected all sorts of
"Urban Legends." These are tales that may have a grain of truth in them
somewhere that get circulated as part of modern folklore, including the
alligators in the NYC sewers, the poodle in the microwave, and so on.

In Brunvand's book "The Choking Doberman" he traces the history of the
Blue Star hoax. It originated some 15-20 years ago (I can't remember
off the top of my head) when some police chief made an off-the-cuff
remark that was misinterpreted by a newspaper reporter. It surfaces
approximately every nine months. If you're interested in this and other
tales, "The Choking Doberman" is readily available in paperback at just
    about any book store.

Please DO NOT circulate this around any more. Panic when there's
something to panic over. Please do not circulate this mail message, and
tell anyone that sends it to you that it is a hoax.

    Cumberland County in New Hampshire.

That message, or one like it is currently circulating around the
Augusta area. It seems to come around every year without fail, and
creates the same silly hysteria each time.
They even made copies and handed them out to as many people as would
take them here at the plant.
Every year the same thing happens, some of the school systems send
a copy of this warning home with each and every student and some
don't. Then a week later a few hysterical parents of kids whose school
didn't hand out this message write a letter to the editor of the
local paper and make a big fuss because they think that the people
running the school that their kids go to have no right to decide
if this "important warning" is a valid concern or not.

BTW The LSD alert is distributed by the American Legion, nationally.

It bugs me to see people passing this misinformation around in
something of a frenzy. It's like a fire out of control. Some
people will probably have big long talks with their kids about how
awful this is...and the kids will become very curious (at least,
    that's the way I was).

I won't go into detail about how I feel about this, but I'll just say
that I feel strongly enough that I have replied to everyone in the
forwarding headers when I receive the message. I may hear from people
who want to argue with my opinion, but it's something I feel I should
point out -- if for nothing more than to present another view of looking
    at it.

Here is the reply I've given to people:

--------
This is in reference to the mail about "Blue Star" LSD and various
other drug forms being sold to children...

This message has been circulated before and was discovered to be
one of those urban myths. Apparently it has even been published in
a book about "Urban Myths".

I wanted to let you know because that mail is misinformation, and
misinformation is dangerous to all of us. It is always good to be
smart and aware, but this kind of warning gets people upset and
paranoid, and I don't think that's good either.

It's easy to forward things via electronic mail, but it might be a
good idea to be more aware of the accuracy and truth of things before
forwarding them. Otherwise, there's no limit to the amount of
misinformation we will all be subjected to.

Thanks.

this silly thing really pisses me off! The thought that an acid
dealer would hang around elementary schools to get new customers
is the most ludicrous thing I ever heard. Yep, those 8 year
olds are a great target market. They must walk around that
playground every day with their pockets stuffed with money
just dying to spend it on LSD which they have now become
addicted to. Grade school children rarely have much more
than lunch money on them for christ sakes. I can not imagine how
any close to sane person would believe this garbage. But aparently
    some do.

That people would needlessly foster distrust and fear is a shame.
And blame never helps because its their perspective which is the real
problem. Where is the real root ? Is it just that schools/life/people
don't teach us how to be properly supportive of one another ? Thus
we end up fearful of our brothers and sisters ?

230.10a story about overcoming fearsTLE::ABBOTFri Jan 10 1992 15:3123
Speaking of putting fear into little kids... when I was little there
was this guy, probably about 30 and looked like your average hippy of
the time, lived alone in a fairly large house near the road that went
into the cemetary. My school was at the other end of the cemetary and
on days that I had cub scout meetings the bunch of us would take the
short cut through the cemetary. There were stories going around about
this guy that were scary. They were probably all made up, since a
person like that living in the ultra-conservative town of West Lebanon,
New Hampshire, was rather rare. One day we notice he was out shoveling
snow from his driveway, and we were gonna have to walk right by him.
Soem of the guys were wondering what they should do, and I suggested we
just say "hi" to him. So we say "hi" to him, he smiles and says some
friendly greeting, and we continue along the way. One fear gone, from
then on whenever we saw him he was friendly.

Then one night his bouse burned flat (the fire was so big it even made
it to the channel 9 news), and he died in the fire. I was real sad
that it happened, since it was obvious that the fire was set by
someone, and I was upset that no one really cared about it. I felt
creepy walking by the cellar hole after that.

ones who set fir to his house?
230.13TLE::ABBOTFri Jan 10 1992 19:2216
I don't think they ever got anyone for setting the fire. This was the
winter of 1969-70 so I probably don't remember all of the findings.
All I know they found out was he supposedly had a party that night and
the fire was set in the basement while the party was going on, although
that guy was the only one who died in the fire.

I don't remember him being a hated person in town, just being a kid at
the time, kids had a tendency to pick on (and make up songs about)
strange people. West Lebanon was a strange little town - big enough to
have a post office and fire department with the town name, but small
enough that it was technically still a part of Lebanon, using their
mayor and police force. Now it's just a spot at the intersection of 89
and 91 with a gazillion shopping centers.

From: Gene Spafford "spaf@cs.purdue.edu"
Re: DO NOT SENT ANY {GET WELL, POST, BUSINESS} CARDS TO CRAIG

If you call the ``Children's Make a Wish'' foundation, you will find
that they are not soliciting any form of card for Craig Shergold or
anyone else. Better yet, if you call the Guinness people (US
publisher is "Facts on File" @ 212-683--2244 ext. 336), you can get
this same story confirmed. You will also find that they will no
longer endorse or support any effort to break this record.

Many years ago, Craig Shergold had a brain tumor, believed inoperable.
He sought to set the Guinness record for get-well cards. The call was
well-publicized, and he did, indeed set the record (consult a recent
edition of the book --- he has received in excess of 16 million cards
to date; he officially set the record as of 17 Nov 1989).

As part of this whole story, his plight caught the attention of John
Kluge, the US billionaire, who paid for Craig to come to the US and
receive specialized treatment. As a result, Craig has recovered
completely from his tumor. He is also no longer seven, but well into
his teens (you can see how out-of-date the request for cards is from
this -- it's like circulating a letter encouraging people to vote for
Carter for President).

The problem is that the mimeographed sheets and letters seeking cards
for Craig have continued to be circulated. As a result, cards
continue to pour in to the post office for Royal Marsden Hospital in
England. Worse, the appeal has mutated into various other versions,
such as an appeal for business cards, one for postcards, and another
version that appeals for holiday cards.

The Shergold family has publicly appealed many times that people cease
to mail them cards and letters, and that no more appeals be made on
their behalf. One easily accessible way to verify this is with the
article on page 24 of the 19 July 1990 NY Times. People Magazine wrote
an article about it on June 1, 1991, page 63. Even Ann Landers has
carried an item on this [6/23/91], but people still keep trying to send
cards. Both Guinness and Royal Marsden have repeatedly issued press
releases asking people to stop circulating requests for cards, as they
are creating an undue burden on both the hospital and the postal service.

The Guinness people have discontinued the category to prevent this
kind of thing from ever happening again, and are doing their utmost to
kill any further mailings. The Royal Marsden Hospital is at a loss
what to do with the cards that continue to arrive --- most are being
sold to stamp collectors and paper recyclers, and none go on to Craig.

This appeal for Craig, as well as many urban legends, regularly appear
on electronic bulletin boards around the world, and in many
organizational newsletters and bulletins. It is both heartening and
unfortunate that there are so many well-meaning people who continue to
propagate these stories. It is too bad that so many people are
unwilling to verify their information before passing such things
along, especially when a simple phone call will suffice to do so. In
this case, opening a recent copy of a book carried by nearly every
library and bookstore would illuminate the situation.

If you would still like to do something for a dying child, consider
making a donation to a charity such as UNICEF or to the International
Red Cross (Red Crescent, Red Magen David). Many thousands of children
are dying daily around the world from disease and starvation, and
countless millions more are suffering from the ravages of war, famine,
disease, and natural disaster. Think how many of them might be helped
by the millions of dollars in postage spent on cards to Craig
Shergold.... Addresses (in US) are:

	UNICEF American National Red Cross
	1 UN Plaza 17th & D Streets
New York, NY 10017 Washington, DC 20006
			     Attn: international children's aid

[Also, I encourage you to save this announcement, in either electronic
or hard copy form, and to post it to any bulletin board you've seen the
original plea on. If you see it in the future, as you probably will,
you can attach a copy of this announcement. Wouldn't it be great to
finally kill this story, which spreads like a virus? - MRH]

Subject: Rumor Confirmed - Drivers Beware!

We heard this before -- but now it's been confirmed through this
memorandum from the Lynn Police Department -- please take heed!

CITY OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS
POLICE DEPARTMENT

TO: ALL DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL
FROM: CAPTAIN JOSEPH H. ROWE
DATE: NOVEMBER 25, 1993
SUBJECT: POLICE INFORMATION

Similar events have occurred in Los Angeles, Chicago and Baltimore.

                             -- BULLETIN --

THERE IS A NEW GANG INITIATION

This new "initiation" of "Murder" is brought about by gang members
driving around with their car lights off. When you flash your car
lights to signal them that their lights are out, the gang members
take it literally as "LIGHTS OUT" so they follow you to your
destination and kill you! That is their initiation.

Two families have already fallen victim to this initiation ritual
in the St. Louis and Chicago areas. Reports have also been received
that this has also occurred in the western part of Massachusetts.

This information should be given widespread distribution on
your respective territories and posted on all bulletin boards.
Beware and inform your families and friends.

DO NOT FLASH YOUR CAR LIGHTS FOR ANYONE!

Me too. I love the "confirmed" part -- you've seen this a hundred
times before and it wasn't true, but this time it's "confirmed!" It
wouldn't surprise me if Capt. Rowe really issued this, in the interest
of "public safety." Anyone want to call the Lynn PD and ask?

Hopefully this urban myth won't give anyone any ideas and become reality.
