216.0. "Happy Holidays" by STUDIO::IDE (now it can be told) Thu Nov 14 1991 10:29

    Here's a new base note for discussion of your favorite holidays, such
    as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Saturnalia, etc. Discussions
    could include where you're going, what you're giving, what you got, and
    why the hell were Christmas decorations up before Halloween.

    What prompted this, you might ask? Well, the latest list of unsfafe
    toys for tots is out, and number four on the list is:

     My son Timothy Neal was born on April 16th! Can you elaborate
     more Tim ? Is that Hoffman's birthday ? Or maybe the day
     of a now-infamous bike ride ?

     This could be a cosmically significant!

    When I was in school, my favorite holiday was National Bunk Day!

    The wife and I can't figure out what to get each other/us for
    Christmas. We liked to get a console TV for the living room and put
    the 19" in the spare room. We don't have the same taste in TV at times
    and I'd like to watch PBS alot and the console would look nicer in the
    living room and the 19" is starting to get old picture wise.

    Man, I remember the old days when I'd watch PBS or nothing. Now she's
    got me hooked on several sitcoms, Rescue 911 and Unsolved Mystery's!!
    Thank somebody I brought home a VS2000 to learn 'C' on. Now if that
    ain't better than watching Rescue 911, I don't know what is!  :^)
    Watch, I'll probably end up playing the games I put on it instead!

    I also would like a Sega entertainment system. But I guess there's
    better things in life to get addicted to. :^)

    Hey, I'm taking my personal holiday tomorrow and I'm really going to
    not do ANYTHING! YES! Everytime I take a day off, I do errands.
    Tomorrow I'm going to tune in, turn on and drop out for the day, if you
    know what I mean. At night we're going to friends; then I can play
    hockey on my friends Sega system. Ah, small minds......and mine should
    be pretty small by tomorrow evening. I can see it now, my dog will see
    me spinning around the music room with music blaring and he'll be lying
    there sying thinking, "There he goes again".

 Speaking of Video games. My older brother always said I was crazy
(he's not the only one to say that ;-) because I enjoy that "Mindless
brainwasting entertainment", his words not mine. TILL he bought a NES
for his daughters, now he plays more than they do! 8-)

  The one thing I love about the NES is that many of the games require
more than just hand to eye coordination, they also require thought
and problem solving, which IMO is educational at any age level.

    I have an old Vectrex that I dig out a coupla times a year and have fun
    with. For those that don't remember, the Vectrex is (was) a vector
    graphics system a little bigger than a Mac, all self-contained. They
    stopped making them around '84 when Milton Bradley bought them out in
    typical big-company moves and within months they were gone. I paid $48
    for my system that sold for $200 months before, and scooped up all the
    cartridges I could for $5 each (down from $35!). Couple of cool race
    games (like Pole Position), Star Castle, Armor Attack, and some even
    betetr ones that weren't copies of arcade games.

    The only other video game I have is a Magnavox Oddysey 2, which was a
    really going system 10 years ago. Even had a full keyboard. Atari kinda
    plowed them under.

    I prefer board games (Avalon Hill type) and RPG's myself.

                                Worst Toys

              Another nominee is He-Man's Electronic Skeletor
              Skull Staff, which carries this cautionary
              statement on the box: "This toy is to be used for
              lighting and sound effects only! Don not throw,
              strike at, or swing it at other people, animals, or
              objects." Yeah, sure, tell that to Mikey when his
              little brother is driving him nuts.

                              and

Presence of Santa = Kids wanna go to the mall = Parents have to go to the mall
= Parents might buy stuff = potential $$$

I don't understand why malls don't just have year-round celebrity figures
present. How much would it cost to have one Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
shuffling around a mall year-round? Sure would rake in the bucks.

    Hey now folks ...

    There's more than one way to look at this mall Santa thing. With all
    the folks outta work these days, this is seasonal employment for
    somebody ... and that's good news no matter HOW you slice it.

    If you don't like the commercialism, don't go to the malls. There's
    plenty of other places to go Christmas shopping.

    If you haveta go to a mall because your KIDS want you to, then I'd say
    that's YOUR fault for letting your kids rule you instead of the other

216.28Tis the season to buy (Lisa!) presents! ;^)LEDS::MRNGDU::YETTOchild of countless dreamsTue Nov 19 1991 11:5532

Well personally I *love* Christmas,.... commercialism, mall Santas and
everything else aside. It's a time when familys get together (which is very
special for me having 5 nephews and 1 niece whom I rarely see all together).
It's also a time when children's eyes are FULL of joy and amazement and that is
enough to put me in Bliss!!! It is a season for children and I love children
and moreso I love seeing them happy. OK, so it festers alot of negative things
but (like the positive) the negative is always there ... you just have to train
yourself to look past it. One way which helps me is to stay the hell out of
the malls after Thanksgiving ... then what do I have to complain about? It's
actually rather simple. The commercialism can be a bummer *if you let it bum
you out*,.. but if Christmas weren't so commercialized would it elicit as many
gatherings (family and friends) and joy and good will as it does? I think not.
So maybe, to some extent, Macheavellian (?) was right in this case - the ends
justifies the means.

Christmas is a JOY for me, not the chore that it unfortunately seems to be
for so many. I love buying presents and seeing people's faces as they open
them .... and being a December baby .... I love getting presents too!! :-)
I got so excited this time of year ... I get those big eyes full of joy just
like the kids. As a matter of fact, the child in me comes out like no other
time ... and not the screaming bratty kid making lists of what they want from
Santa. There is more to Christmas than that, and crowded malls and crazy
parking lots and quite honestly I feel very sorry for the people who can't see
that. Christmas is the season of giving! And it is so so easy to do,... and
love doing!! (if you want proof just buy ME a present!! :-)

Ahhh ... Christmas!!  :-)

"Christmas Christmas time is here, time for joy, time for cheer..."

216.29now and again these things got to be doneOCTOBR::GRABAZScome on in out of the coldTue Nov 19 1991 12:4350
	Christmas this year will be VERY different for us and I am
	actually pretty excited about it...

	Guntis has not been earning money since last Spring and
	I work parttime...lately we have literally been living from
	paycheck to paycheck...and most times I start mailing out
	bills with money from this week's paycheck before I get this
	week's paycheck hoping that the mailee won't cash the check
	until it's covered...

	The only way I can buy gifts this year is to go into debt
	and charge them...but truthfully, I don't want to do that.
	I CAN'T do that...because I have no way to pay it off come
	January. I will do that a LITTLE...but I am getting myself
	into a mindset so that, as much as possible, we will be making
	our Christmas gifts. I feel a little uneasy about it because
	there are some folks that I exchange gifts who are very
	extravegant with us. But, this year I have no choice in the
	matter and I'm hoping that actually, if we could end this
	expensive-gift-giving spiral and turn it to a more simple
	approach, that it could continue into the future even when
	we CAN afford more. I've always had friends on my list that
	we exchange hand-made gifts with every year...and I can truly
	say that those gifts mean so much more to me. I guess I have
	always felt MY hand-made items were somehow not worthy...but,
	as I said, I'm working on my mindset there. This year, most
	folks on my list will be getting something someone in my
	family has hand-made.

	I've been thinking, probably when I see lots of my friends at
	Thanksgiving time, that I'm going to let them know of my plans
	so that it won't be so embarrassing for me at Christmastime.
	The thing is, I don't want my friends to spend alot on me
	when I can't reciprocate it. I am hoping they will see this
	as a relief...

	As far as my kids are concerned; that, I feel, is a piece of
	cake. They really do have simple tastes. They don't watch
	TV, so they don't crave any expensive plastic fad-of-the-year
	toys. Their school encourages simple and natural, so their
	peers don't influence them otherwise. It will be simple and
	I think that will be fine. One thing that I WOULD like to buy
	them though (CHARGE!) is some new cross country ski boots (man,
	kids' feet grow fast!) and pray for snow so we can ski Christmas day!

	all in all, we're in for something completely different this
	year...I feel good about it and am looking forward to it...

    what you need is sold out, you will be trampled by rabid children
    dragging their poor mothers over your head as they rush to Toy Town,
    The sheer magnitude of this rush will create a vacum that then lifts
    you off the floor and pulls you right in to the center of the Christmas

    Most of the people in my family are going to have a subdued Xmas,
    concentrate more on the family part of it (we're gonna have a huge

    Well, we had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving...

    The week before, Patty went in for a physical....the Dr. felt a "mass"
    where it shouldn't have been...Thursday nite we had a catscan done,
    which 2 different groups of radiologists looked at and said that mass
    "shouldn't be there". The Monday before Thanksgiving Patty had surgery
    to remove what was thought to be a tumor. 5 min before the surgery they
    start talking malignant, radiation, etc. Freaked me right out.
    Turns out the "mass" was a bunch of swollen lymph nodes above the
    pancreas. A biopsy (sp) on the lymph nodes turned out OK. So it was
    basically an unnecesary operation, but coulda been REAL scary...it was
    scary enough as it was. So Patty is home recovering from a big slit in
    her belly and fortunately nothing else.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
           T'was the night before a Dead show
            and all through the place,
           All the heads were dosed-
            just trippin' to space.
           Their joints were all rolled
            with precision and care,
           With hopes that St. Stephen
            soon would be there.
           The freaks were all nestled
            all stoned in their beds,
           While visions of Johanna
            danced in their heads.
           With me in my poncho
            and her in my hand,
           Just dying to hear
            "Uncle John's Band."
           When out from the stage
            there rose such a clatter,
           I sprang to my feet to see
            what was the matter.
           O'way to the stadium I flew
            with my stash.
           I kicked down the gate -
            it fell with a crash.
           The light from the orb
            hanging so high,
           Blinding me like I was
            born crossed eyed.
           And what to my red glossy
            eye should appear,
           A shadowed figure,
            could it be Mr. Weir?
           No, too big to be Bob,
            too short to be Phil.
           Could it be Mickey,Brent,
            maybe Bill?
           He started to sing
            and the sound from his lips,
           Assured me at once
            that he was Captain Trips.
           His eyes how they twinkled,
            his dimples how merry,
           I exclaimed in excitement,
            "Oh Wow! It's Jerry!"
           I couldn't believe it
            just Jerry and Me,
           "Play something," I said
            "Play Sugaree".
           The Fat Man jammed -
            he was on a roll,
           With his sweet songs
            he rocked my soul.
           Jerry spoke once
            and his message was  plain,
           "Gotta go now," he said
            "It looks like rain."
           But I heard him exclaim
            as he walked out of sight,
           "Good Lovin' to all and
            I Bid You Goodnight."
chris,
re: phillybound
my parents live in broomall, a western suburb (near villanova, bryn mawr,
haverford, swarthmore, to name a few of the local colleges).  funny how when
i was growing up it felt like philly was kind of far away, and going into the
city was a long trip.  i looked at a map recently and realized it's only about
10 miles.  i live about 3 times that far from boston now, yet it doesn't feel
very far.
i may be heading into philly on friday.  if so, i'll just have to grab a
cheese-steak from a street vendor (how come nobody can make a good cheese-steak
outside of philly?)  probably heading back to boston on saturday morn, as i
have tentative plans on saturday nite.
    Well, we did the "over the river and through the woods" to
    Grandma's and Grandpa's this past week.  And since the house is
    now down outside of Charleston SC, it was a bit of a hike.
    Left Saturday, 11/19, and made it down about 8PM on Sunday.
    Had a fun visit, set up my dad with a compuserve account which
    with any luck he'll make some sort of sense out of.  Brought the
    kids bikes with us, and had them tooling around a bit to wear them
    out.  Didn't work all that well ;-)  but they were pretty well
    behaved given the long car trip.  I just wish they would eat a little
    bit more normal food without jumping all over creation to check out
    any little thing that caught their eyes, but I guess with time...
    Went to the beach once, into Charleston for a short walk through
    the market area.  Took the kids out to see the Lion King which
    everyone liked.  I went out myself to see the new Trek movie, which
    was OK, but not great.  Then had a great turkey dinner, minus Dan, who
    had fallen asleep watching TV (we fed him a bit after he woke up
    but he wasn't really into the turkey anyway).  Then headed back up
    north on Friday morning.  Made it to New York on Saturday, where we
    ran into our first real traffic for the trip, going over the
    Verazzano and along the Belt to Vally Stream for a Hanukah party.
    Then over to sister-in-laws to sleep, check out the twins,
    rest up before the final push up north.
    Did slightly over 2100 miles the whole trip, ate more food than I
    should, and now I'm trying to catch up here and in mail.  Sigh...
    miles to go indeed....
    Later,
    PeterT
>nah, nova's got new tires.
jc, you don't need new all-season tires for the nova, you need tracks
(as in M1A1 Abrams) !!!
    Had a nice time this past weekend.  We got bumped on our return flight
    and got free round trippers for future use , YAHHHHH :^).  crazy
    travel times around thanksgiving, Commonmental Airlines was giving 2
    free tickets to anyone who would take a bump on the way down.  Too bad
    I was meeting up with folks already, that would have been 6 more frebees
    if we could have taken them.
WOW mon, you lucked out.
most airlines now just give you cash, like $150.00, for being bumped...
    This Christmas was fantastic for me.  Despite the fact that it doesn't
    snow, southerners really do it up for the holidays.  Everywhere I went
    people were warm, friendly and wanted to shake my hand.  Made more
    friends in 5 days than I have here at home in 5 years.   Strangers
    stopping strangers...the real thang.  Money is sparse, but it just
    doesn't seem to make a darn difference to anyone.  I saw an empty
    donation bottle for needy children at a local liquor store....I threw
    in a couple bucks.  The next day I was back at the liquor store, and
    the bottle was filled with cash....so much, that another empty bottle
    was placed beside it.  Blew me away.
    Spent a lot quality time with my Mother and her husband and even made it
    to a Country Christmas show at the Carolina Opry.  Yee haw!
