195.0. "WCUW - "Only Played Once" Special" by RANGER::NOURSE () Mon Sep 16 1991 16:13

I am putting together a special show for next month.
This will consist entirely of songs the Dead have only played once
(possibly twice). I am looking for suggestions.
Suggestions accompanied by tapes are encouraged (especially if I don't
have the tape already or if your tape is better).

Maybe you're thinking of Rochester, 6/30/88? Maybe they also did it in
Buffalo, I've never been to Rich Stadium.

re: suggestions for the show

Maybe a song from the rainforest benefit? I know they didn't *lead* the songs,
but maybe there was some significant accompaniment by the boys. (I'm talking
about the songs done by the other guests).

How many times did they do "France"? Or "Pride of Cucamonga"? "The Golden
Road"?

Do you mean "Frozen Logger" ?

Hand Jive was played 6 times, mostly in '86
Green Onions, once, 6-30-88
Joey was played 3 times.

How about:

Goodnight Irene, 12-31-83
How Sweet It Is, 3-25-72
I'm A Man , 3-25-72,12-10-89

Pride of Cucamonga was never played live. I do seem to recall someone
saying that it was once played during a soundcheck.

195.27Louie-LouieTECRUS::FROMMTue Sep 17 1991 13:0415
I have a tape where they play Louie-Louie (I'll have to go home and check where
and when it is). WMMR in Philly has a Louie-Louie parade every year, where
that's the only song that's played. We got together a bunch of Deadheads and
marched in the parade one year, and we just played a tape with the Dead's
version over and over again as we marched.

As for the following comment in one of the replies to this note:

Hand Jive....well I think it was played only twice once in Worchester
and once out west I think the Centrum date was in april of 87??

I have a tape with Hand Jive, and I'm not sure if it falls into either of these
categories. Again, I'll have to check.

I think Run Run Rudolph (or at least one version of it) was done on
12-10-6or7 something.

I second the suggestions of Love the One Your With and La Bamba, mainly
because that is what I would have said. And for another fun song (done
5 times but I'll suggest it anyway ....) Walkin The Dog. I also believe
they did Supersition, but I don't know when.

what a crack up. Although it is probably inaccurate to say that they

195.32Keep Them Coming!RANGER::NOURSETue Sep 17 1991 21:4818
A whole lot of great suggestions there. Keep them coming!
It sounds as if there is a lot of interest in this.
Many of them I already have tapes of, some I do not have yet.

Does anyone have tapes of the Academy of Music run from '72?
There were a lot of songs played there that never saw the light
of day again, such as "Are You Lonely for me Baby". [I have about
20 minutes from 22-Mar-72, including that song. The sound is not
too good, but I may run it anyway].

Since I do have some soundcheck/practice-session/whatever tapes,
I may include some "never played for an audience at all" songs,
such as Pride of Cucamonga and Unbroken Chain.

re .28 (up close and personal!):

You KNOW I was having a good time there.

Yeah! It was more like 85 or 86 though. I kinda was with ya Glenn -
I mean I wasn't with Glenn but I was kinda there....

That's the time it was a gorgeous warm spring day and when the show got out,
snow had blanketed Portland....a treacherous ride home ta boot.

here's a couple more:

Revolution (more than once - may have been mentioned already).
"She's an Artist" (or do they call this "She belongs to me") from Rochester
85/86ish.

The Full HEY JUDE not just the na na na na na na heeey juuuude part.

Day-o from a New Years run with Nevilles (somebody mentioned this show earlier)

I'll second that Devil in a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miz Molly what I hot show
that was.....

Or how bout Death Letter Blues from a St. Paul tape w/ Boz Scaggs from
73 - I could be washed up about that one BUT seem to recollect it somewhere
on a tape I have as filler (walkin blues and death letter blues???)

that Devil with a Blue Dress/Good Golly Miz Molly sequence at Shoreline??
a few years ago, so it's not a once only thing. Someone was talking about
Visions of Johanna - they did that at Berkeley Community Theatre in 1986.
Why doesn't someone just check their Deadbase?? Some of us don't have all
