157.0. "Jerry's missing finger" by FORTSC::CHABAN () Wed May 01 1991 23:16

    Stupid question time. Just how did Jerry lose his finger? Is this
    a taboo subject or something? I've asked a number of friends about
    it and some don't know or won't tell.

    In the Dead Bio in 1983 mentions Jerry"s brother in a freak
    accident with an axe on a camping trip. The David Gans book.
    The Music Never Stopped.

    Another question not related for stupid questions, when did Jerry
    stop playing pedal steel, sure love his sound on NRPS records and
    Crosby's Solo album, and other Dead related records.

157.10Jerry on pedal steelBCSE::ABBOTAngels on ArielsThu May 02 1991 14:195
    Jerry was playing pedal steel on some of the Dylan/Dead rehearsals,
    that was May '87.

    Garcia has also stated that pedal steel is harder and different than
    regular guitar because you damp with your left hand....don't think he
    has given it up for good though

I think it was in "Playing in the Band" where Garcia said that the first
thing you have to do when learning pedal steel guitar is to put the fact
that its a guitar completely out of your mind.

Jim who at one time wanted to learn pedal steel.

    hey marv now there's another idea for a rumor about what the meaning
    of the song "He's Gone" is about.....or maybe "Find Jerry's missing
    finger and win a ticket to a show"...
