141.0. "What Show Would you Give a Non Deadhead" by DECXPS::HENDERSON (There was nothin no one could do) Fri Mar 22 1991 16:06

A guy I work with who has been providing me with some grate Bluegrass
and Zydeco music asked me to make him a Dead tape (he has none). He wanted
a good sounding tape, but more importantly a tape that is a good sample of
their musical abilities. I have a couple ideas, 5-7 or 5-9-77 for starters,
and maybe some earlier stuff...

What would you give him?

    (5/9 + 5/7)/2 = 5/8 sort of. That's the one I'd give. Also 9/4/77
    (Englishtown).

    - Dave who wouldn't mind getting 5/7 and or 5/9 either (hint hint).

I haven't heard 5/7 nor 5/9/77, but if I was making this tape
I'd mix it up a bit. ('77 isn't a personal favorite of mine...)

Are you doing 1 tape ? If so, howsabout side A first set tunes,
	and side B 2nd set tunes. I'd include a nice FOTD (~bluegrassy),
IKO (for the Cajun roots), maybe a Uncle->Mex/Big River.

I'd include a nice Eyes for set II, for sure.

I always have the hardest time making tapes like this because there's
	SO much to choose from.

Albany 3-24-90. Honestly. And only because my '88 Hampton tapes are
    screwed up.

I can think of few recent shows that I'd offer also, and I'm thinking about
those...I'm thinking maybe a 77 show and a 90 show, maybe with Marsallis.

    Not really.

I would give the person a mixer, with songs from 69 - 91 ... just to show
the progressions.

If you're not into spending time doing a mixer, give 'em a nice quality
90 or 91 tape (from DAT master)...

I'd give him Brenden Byrne 10-16-89 second set......the first set
isn't bad either, lots of jams throughout!

My choice for a recent show(s) from the mid '80s would have to
be Augusta, ME. I beleive they were Oct. 11th and 12th of '84. I could
be wrong on the dates but it only seems like yesterday that I was there
    for both shows.
         Am I getting old, Jim?????

I would also recommend a sampler tape(s). I'd include one or two songs
from each era ... a couple of Pigpen tunes, some mid-70's stuff with
Keith and Donna (Winterland '78 mebbe), some mid-80's stuff (they did
some fine showz in June-July '85), and finally some Hornsby-Welnick era
stuff (from the MSG and Europe showz) ... and I'd end it with Lovelight
from 03-29-90 and Johnny B. Goode from 12-31-90 (both with Branford).

I've kinda decided on a sampler...

A couple early 70's

A couple late 70's

Then maybe DDHNM from 10-9-89 (he likes blues)

Eyes with Branford.

A few from the fall '90 MSG shows (probably GDTRFB->Stella from 9-19

And my favorite TOG from 9-20-90)

May wind up with 2 tapes.

Jim,

If he likes blues, be sure to include a good Hard To Handle and a Smokestack
Lightning...

Great choice! Probably the best TOG _ever_!

> May wind up with 2 tapes.

He'll be better off this way ;-)

If I was making a tape today I'd have to include one of my current favorite
openers: Jack Straw->Bertha (from either 10-30-90 London or 3-23-90 Albany)
