Conference rdvax::grateful

Talking to rfb and Divide D here about a grate show I saw in the late 70's
at Autzen stadium in Eugene, the boyz and Santana.  Anyone have any information
on the date and length??  It was a good show, but so very hot(temperature) and 
in a packed cement football stadium.  Seemed like a very long concert, but maybe
time has lengthened it in my memory.

Took both my children (must have been about 10 & 5), they didn't have tickets and
I had mine.  We locked are bikes ( we only lived about a mile from the stadium)
to the fence and asked the guard if I could take my kids in for a peek.  Showed
himn my ticket and told i'd come right out and take the kids home, I just wanted
them to see the crowd and big stage.  He looked kinda dubious, looked at my 
kids, cute little tikes they were ;-), and told me to go on in and not to come 
out until the show was over or the kids were tired.  ;-)

Boy it was hot, and dry, but we had brought drinks and stuff, stayed for the 
whole thing.

 also let me say online Thank you for making my day this morning with your
information on the Elevators.  You are the ONLY other person I have run into
that remembers them.  Had they not run into problems they would have been 
legendary!!!

  When someone posted about how they called the Albany Parking Authority
  and requested tat we send a letter of appreciation I wrote to then and
  cced the mayor.  I also enclosed a SASE in the letter and asked for a
  little info.  They knew that unless otherwise requested that the reply
  would be posted to the net.  The replay came in the form of a business
  card, and hand written note from Leonard R. Fox, Director.  A photocopy
  of some rules were also enclosed along with my SASE (unused).  Below
  is the hand written note followed by the photocopy of the rules.

These rules sound very reasonable to me.  I sure hope that the 'heads that
make use of this facility have respect for the rules.  All it takes is a few
assholes to ruin it for the whole crowd.

Yeah, they seem to be giving deadheads a lot of latitude.  I also hope everyone
who partakes in this recognizes that the Albany people are going out on a limb
to arrange this overnight thing, and it shouldn't be messed with.

	this looks like the right place to put my questions...

	I heard that daypacks were being "confiscated" at the door and
	that you could pick them up "after the show"...is that true?
	I usually DO carry a daypack and definately would NOT want to
	be separated from it for the show...

	what time are the shows generally getting out...what I'm really
	asking here is is anyone taking the T after and finding it to
	be a problem?

    they are NOT taking them away, Friday nite I think they wanted to but
    it looks like they changed their minds on Sat & Sun. Just a rilly good
    look though the pack is all I saw......not to worry.

    No backpacks on friday but they were allowed on Sat/Sun. There is
    also a truck outside where you can check your bags/packs until after
    the show for free.

I went in with a day pack all three days.  They just want to make sure there are
no food stuffs and drinks in there.  Friday night they did have ideas of not
letting me in with it though but I got around that, "there are only clothes
and tampons in here sir" ..... hey let me RIGHT by, no hassles!  :-)

    saturday night was the only time i went in with a bag...  a day pack
    with water bottle, fruit, and clothes...  wasn't ever touched or looked
    at...

I carry a *large* fanny pack.  On Friday night they would *not* let me in
with it.  But the guard "hinted" that if I gave it to my girlfriend it
might be considered a "purse" and be oked.  Sure enough, Linda got it in with
no problem!!  Purses yes, fanny packs, no.

Althuogh I am in the favor on this one (not that that should matter) I don't
think it is right that 'purses' are OK and other things aren't.  As for what a
man puts in a fanny pack and I put in my day_bag there may be no difference;
actually my bag probably holds alot more.  I really got in with my bag Friday
the way I said before; which wasn't contrived to beat the system, it was the
truth.  It was very funny at the time, and still is when I think of how the
guard's jaw dropped when I  said tampons :-) but it is ridiculous that I should
be treated so differently just because I said something "embarrassing".  I am
just glad it wasn't planned on my part ... I mean I am happy I made it in with
the pack and didn't have to hassle with checking it but I would have felt
pretty rotten if I scammed it in intentionally in that manner.  Does that make
any sense?  Systems are made to be beat if you can do it I know but I don't
always feel right doing that, especially when I see others getting shut down. 
I guess I am just not much of an opportunist.

Bottom line is that it was a stupid rule anyway, if the word tampon was all it
took for me to slide by!  The next two nights they had no intentions of 
preventing people from bringing thier packs in, they just added cops to check
them - if you can call squeezing it for a microsecond a thourough check.

    On Fri nite I ignored the announcement that they would not let
    daypacks in and was turned back after getting to the door and told to
    go to the end of the building to another door where I would be able to
    enter. I was perturbed at this as I only had extra clothes and a couple
    of grapefruits (I didn't know food wasn't allowed at this point, which
    also bothers me cause I don't litter and can't see why they don't
    unless they figure you'll buy their stuff :^/ and they don't even have
    grapefruits ;^0 So I now figure I'll have to wait in another long line
    but when I get to the door there's only a few of us going in at a good
    clip. As it turned out this musta been the vip entrance and my bag
    wasn't even checked :^} So as we're flying up these short flights of
    stairs I instantly recognized Chris Ford coming down the stairs and in
    the same instant, almost as if I anticipated him being there I said
    "hi Chris!" as I continued up the stairs. I think I may've blown his 
    mind a bit as it was happened rilly fast :^)
    
    The next nite I went in the regular way and lost my grapefruits :^(
    as well as a couple of apples I brought for my son who had a rilly 
    good time though he fell asleep during wharf rat and stayed that way
    thru that cooking sat. nit and baby blue which I expected him to do
    as he had a rilly long day.

Hey now, I've got to say that I thought the security at the Garden was great.
From what I could see, they seemed to have good attitudes and lots of patience.

    Yes, although we did get thrown out of our legitimate floor seats
    Sunday night on the grounds that our mail order tickets were
    counterfeit. It seems that the Garden double-sold a bunch of seats and
    either decided that all the mail order tix for those seats would be "no
    good" or that security could decide arbitrarily which tickets to honor.
    
    In the event we were lucky enough to find seats just off the floor
    which actually were better seats, but maybe everyone should be aware
    that this kind of thing has been happening. I also don't think GDTS
    would be too crazy about hearing their tickets aren't being honored.

    Well... my friends scored floor tickets for Fri/Sat,. but Fri nites
    were "non existent" seats. Apparently, the Gahdin planned for a sound
    board of yay size,. and the dead's sound/light board was yay bigger,...
    instant vanishing seats. So ther are siomething like 30 people on the
    floor each night how have legitimate tickest,. but no seats.
    
    Security is pretty cool about it,.. and I actually got a laugh out of
    them while trying to find my non existent seat. First guy tells me "Go
    way over there",.. so I go all the way and I ask the guy over there and
    he says "Go way over there" pointing me beack pretty much where I came
    from,.. so 1/2 way back I stop and ask the guiy in the middle saying
    "Where should I go" and he looks at my ticket,.. frowns,.. and says
    "It doesn't matter,.. just keep going!" :-) :-)

    Last night (tuesday?) both John and I got thoroughly examined.  They
    took away my juices boxes (I hate when that happens) put let me keep
    the daypack.  Then they asked John to show them what he had in his
    cigarette package !  Eeeeek.  good thing the guards felt pressured
    because they didn't look very deep.
    
    so - bring your packs - go with the luck of the draw.
    
    

    one of the guys in line near me was not allowed to enter with his
    pipe...  "please turn that in to the officer and we will allow you
    in"...  wow...  what a concept...  check in your paraphenalia with the
    police and pick it up after the show! :^)

	I was WAVED on through, Guntis was patted down the sides...
	I had a plastic bottle of water, they wouldn't let me take
	the water in, so I drank it, passed it around, and then
	they let me take the bottle in, no hassle.
	I commented to the folks around me on walking in that it
	is very nice to be treated like a human being...good vibes

 I had a usher type tap me on the shoulder Sunday night and suggest that I
extinguish the smoking materials..fortunately he waited til it was about out
anyway :^)



I thought the whole scene outside of the place after Sunday's show was quite
intense...could have been the condition of the brain at the time, however they
seemed to be awful pushy and intent on hurrying people along..couple times I
just wanted to tell them to just hold on a minute and let me get my bearings
but they didn't wanna listen..

    During the MSG run, the cops were trying to keep things moving on the
    sidewalk.  Basically, you could walk around in circles and that was
    okay as long as you didn't just stand in place.  Whatever.  Anyway,

 This is what I came out of the show to hear on Sunday night, and in the 
altered state I was in it kinda freaked me out...I asked Lisa if we were still
in the USA when we got out there..real strange at that time...

Dave Clark said last night that tonight's show will be the Dead's 2000th show
and the the first couple of rows were reserved for the band's friends and
family.  I hadn't seen that in here so I figured I'd put it in.  Sorry if it's
old news.

	The one that really takes the cake was: "We've been doing this for 6
nights now and people are still having troubles with the rules.  I know they

bottles.  No liquid containers of any kind..."

	after a show, and depending upon one's state of mind, this guy can
be extremely amusing!!!!

    A really wonderful run o' six.  I loved it all .. and now I have the

I hear ya carol!  I'm just not ready for work yet... things are still a little
wishy-washy in the old brain still...... I too question why I am where I am
and dream about ways to change it..... someday, someday...

    Yup.  I got the happy scatchy throat too.  The distance between me and
    the world around me is extremly far right now.   I even refused to go
    to the cafetaria today for lunch because I'm so outta it I wouldn't

About 1/3 of the people I know have colds and attribute it to going to the shows
About 1/3 of the people I know have colds and didn't even go to the shows

	The PA guy was funny with the rules, but to me, the funniest rule
	was the one on the light-board sign which would periodically
	read:

		     "Please Observe No Smoking Regulations."

If I smoked, I definitely would have observed no smoking regulations.  :-)

This is the first time in 3 tours that I am not sick.

re: the PA guy

I had fun listening to him!  I was also happy about having a liove announcer
rather than a tape loop.  I liked the "if you are walking towards the stadium,
you are going the wrong way".  That was the only memorable line I remember.

I'm sure many of you noticed a guy sitting in a booth in the lobby.  The booth
was cut out of the wall, with a panoramic photograph of the ice rink on the
wall (made you feel like you were actually in the arena), and the guy was
watching a black and white TV set.  I asked him if he was the PA guy, and he
said he was in charge of the house lights.  He just waits for a cue, then drops
the lights.  He didn't even have a window to monitor the arena!  And the booth
was the size of an outhouse.  I asked if he liked the music and he said no, but
he commented on how the Dead indirectly paid his salary, and then we rapped for
a while about how popular they are, etc.

I never get sick from going to a few grateful dead showz.

Between school, play and work I am always running at full speed
anyhow! So my body must be used to it and it doesn't revolt.

EDDIE BACKSTAGE AT THE 9/18/91 MSG DEADSHOW

This could be long and boring.... forgive me.  I was pretty excited about the
whole affair, so even the most boring little details turned me on.  

The story starts with a little background.   My 26yo brother, Allan Zuckerman, 
is a Professional Clown by trade.  His business largely entails summer corporate
picnics and various kid's birthday parties.  He specializes in juggling,
magic, balloon art, and general other kid's entertainment. He's been doing this 
quite a number of years and has developed an awesome reputation in the business.
He is also progressing towards a career in stand up comedy and acting.  Anyway,
all this leads up to my brother occasionally being hired to entertain the 
Grateful Dead's kids backstage whenever they're in the NY area.   He's been
backstage for 2 or 3 Giants Stadium shows, the 9/9/91 MSG show, and most
recently, the 9/18/91 show.   For the Dead's gigs, he does his "babysitting"
as he calls it, without the clown makeup.  "Babysitting" isn't too far from an
accurate description.  As you know, there's a fairly large family behind
Grateful Dead Productions.  Besides the few band member's toddlers, some of the
crew have children as well.  Apparently, there's usually about 7-10 kids who
are in need of some sort of (non-musical) entertainment during the show.  It all
depends...sometimes, no kids show at all so my brother may sit in the room
alone, get paid, and leave!

It's kinda funny that *I'm* the big Deadhead in my family.  *I'm* the one
touring around since 1981.  *I'm* the one spending about 25% of my annual salary
on Grateful Dead Tourism.......and my younger brother gets *PAID* to work
BACKSTAGE at the Deadshow!!!!!  ;-)   The only reason why I'm not jealous
is that he usually ends up missing half the show because he's scheduled to
work from 7:00 to about 10:00pm.  It's usually more important for me to be up 
in the stands, hangin' out with the tour buddies, indulging in too much of
everything, dancing and generally enjoying my musical vacation.

Well, the last show of the MSG run rolls around, and quite honestly, I was
running a bit on the tired side.  This was my 7th of the 9 MSG shows.   It
just wasn't that important to me to sit in the Blarney Stone again
(although I certainly enjoyed meeting all the NETheads).   Frankly, all the
other illicit entertainment didn't seem as inviting as it did the first few
nights of the tour. ;-)  I decided early in the day that I was gonna take it
easy for this show, especially since I planned on going to work the next day
*gack!*.

So anyway, I'm hanging out at Mom's house with my brother, and he's
yip-yappin' on the phone for a while.  He hangs up, and proudly announces that
he may be able to get me backstage for that evening's show, but it's a long
shot.  "Cool!" I thought, but I made sure my brother knew that I wouldn't be
majorly bummed if it didn't work out. 

We proceeded to NYC early afternoon.  I drove us to the Hoboken PATH station.
We putzed around in Greenwich Village a bit, and headed over to the Blarney
Stone. (I had some last minute Boston logistics to hammer out).  I refrained
from pre-show partying.   My fear was that I'd be backstage, and looked
upon as YAFSTZ (Yet another fucking spaced tour zombie).  [My sincere
apologies to any YAFSTZ's I may have offended with my last comment %-) ].
At this point in the tour, sobriety was a new and unique drug in itself ;-)

At 6:00 pm, my brother and I left the Blarney Stone and headed to the MSG
employee entrance.  We were met by a security dude who couldn't find my
brother's name on the list, but with a little name dropping, my brother
convinced him to let us up to the 5th floor arena level area.  We walked down
a few corridors to the "Metropolitan Operations booth".  I happened to notice
a few paper signs on the various doors along this hallway such as "Mickey", 
"Phil", "Bobby", etc.  We got to speak to my brother's connection and she told
us to just hang out for a while.  Apparently, our backstage passes had been sent
mistakenly to the "Will Call" booth downstairs.  I was pretty psyched, because
this was the point where I would've been told to hit the road!  At that
moment, I knew I was *in*!

I have to take a moment here to describe this corridor a bit better because
it's layout plays a major part in this story.

The numbers loosely coorespond to rooms.  The room entitled "Dead's Kids"
was near room 3.  The rooms in the area of 5-8 & 14-17 were the personal
rooms of each band member.  Room 18 was the Metropolitain Event operations
room.  Rooms 10-13 were apparently for Candice Brightman and the rest of the
Lighting crew, Dan Healy & Company, Security, and a few other associated rooms
for various functions.  The asterik is the "intersection" that I will be
referring to periodically throughout the duration of this story. 

With the exception of a few people running around with necklaces of dozens
of backstage laminates, there was really nothing happening then. (@6:15pm).
[BTW, there are three types of backstage passes, the first is a laminated
badge for crew members.  This badge is for all areas.  The second backstage
pass is for the actual stage & surrounding area.  This apparently is only for
temporary workers such as riggers & electricians, etc. It says "BACKSTAGE" on it
in very large letters.  The third type, which I got, was for guests, and allowed
me into the backstage band area. This sticker was fairly colorful.  There are
new passes (of each type) issued for every show.  Somebody even counterfiets
these, I've heard!]

My brother and I headed over to the "Dead's Kids" room.  There was a security
guy stationed in front of the room.  If there is one thing that was SERIOUSLY
attended to was the security of this particular room...as in DEADHEADS: DON'T
FUCK WITH OUR KIDS sort of feeling....   Anyway, the security dude recognized
my brother from the Tuesday show [My brother brought his blue bird on Tuesday
-you know, the type they have doing tricks at places like Universal Studios or
Busch Gardens...it's a 3 foot long MACAW (sp?) that hopefully will talk someday.
BTW, The bird's name is "STAIN"...my brother enjoys saying, "Come Stain, Come 
Stain...."   At that show, My brother snapped a picture of his bird on Phil's 
shoulder!]   So we immediately make friends with the security dude, and he let 
us in.  

This room is typical of any Playschool type room.  Toys scattered everywhere.
Bongo's, inflateable guitars, coloring books, dolls, all sorts of stuff.  I
had to laugh because all this crap is on a rug.....Yup, you guessed it, one of
the old persian rugs that used to be onstage!   There was also a cooler full of
juices.  Not your average juices...obscure "all-Natural" juices that came out
of a health food store.  Damned good, lemme tell ya ;-)  The night before, an
arts & crafts person was there to entertain the kids...there were watercolor
paintings everywhere. (kinda looked like Garcia's work to me ;-)

Of particular interest to me was a flyer on the table.  This explained why the
backstage area was somewhat dead.  The flyer (obviously composed on an Apple
MacDraw program):

Impressive menu, I thought.  I can only assume that the band members eat with
the crew?   I thought I noticed some cannolli on Jerry's beard later that
evening. ;-)

About 6:45, my brother and I are hanging around at the intersection of the
back stage hallway and the short hallway that leads to the floor seating.
(This short hallway is where the hockey players come out).  We're bullshiting
now with an usher and a bouncer who were permanently stationed at that spot
for the 9 shows.  They too, remember my brother because of his bird.  My
brother explained that Jerry Garcia's wife insisted that my brother "*NOT*
bring that viscious bird ever again!".   Then, Dan Healy walks by and disappears
into room 11.  I didn't even recognize him with his wet, slicked back hair.
Other stories we heard was that Jerry doesn't hang in the backstage area...he
remains onstage in the little black cubby-holes.  The ushers also seemed to be
quite amused at some of the drug-bust stories that were circulating.  My
brother was sort of impressed because I seemed to be familiar with people
backstage....(He's still trying to figure out which one's Weir, etc. etc.)!??
The bouncer is amazed that I planned on seeing 10 shows this tour.  He had 
trouble comprehending that this was what I do with my vacation!

We're still hanging at the intersection, and I notice that Bob Weir has
arrived and is busy running around between rooms.  5 minutes later, Billy
appears momentarily, and vanishes into a room.  I just watch!  Several minutes
later, Jill Lesh (Phil's wife) comes walking down the hall, carrying Brian
Lesh (Phil's youngest boy-1 year old).  Phil follows talking with friends.
About 10 mins. later, Weir walks towards us and produces a white baseball from
his pocket.  He tosses the ball to the Usher, shakes his hand, and gives him a
hearty "thank you".  As it turned out, earlier in the week, the usher, a devout
baseball fan, asked Weir if he'd get the band members to sign his ball.  What
struck me as pretty cool was that Multi-Millionaire, Super-Rockstar Bob Weir
would take time out to do this nice chore for the usher.  I could imagine 
somebody like Axhole Rose would've told the usher to drink shit!

At this point, I just watch everybody vanish into their rooms.  Next thing I
know, this dude with black frizzy hair (Kinda looks like a heavy Gerry
Gladu ;-) comes up to me and takes particluar interest in my shirt.  I'm wearing
a white Tshirt with a large "Meadowlands" mail order ticket on the front.  This
guy inspects my "ticket" closely, and I'm beginning to wonder why he's so
interested.  "This wouldn't happen to have been *your* seat now, was it?" I
joked with him.   "Nah, I just wanted to see which one it was....I'm from the
ticket office!".   I say, "You wouldn't happen to be 'Steve'...."  My
tour-burnt brain decides to crap out on me once again....I *know* his name,
but I drew a blank....   He says, "Yup, I'm Steve" and he shows me his stack
of backstage laminates.  "Oh yeh, Steve MARCUS!!  I know you!!!  What's up!
Howyadoing, etc. etc."  I thanked him for the superb job that GDTS is doing
and how much I appreciated not having to deal with the ticketoutlet bullshit.
We talked and goofed around a bit, and he said his goodbyes and scampered away. 
There were a bunch of other people milling around backstage at this point, none
of which I recognized by their appearance.  These people were dressed like any 
other deadheads-jeans, sneakers, T-shirts....  You could tell that they were 
connected though, just by their stack of backstage laminated badges...  Hey, 
maybe I even met David Gans (Howdy Dave!), and I didn't even know it ;-).

All of a sudden, a Metropolitain representative shows up with our backstage
passes, and a complimentary tickets to the evening's show!  I thanked her, but
I was quick to mention that I already had a ticket for the show!  She told me
to hold onto it anyway, so I did....  Included with my ticket was an envelope
that said something along the lines of "We've been cool with the free tickets,
you be cool with donations to the REX foundation.."  I forget the exact
wording.

My brother heads to the "Dead's kids" room.  I hear music!  I enter the arena
and Phil's onstage noodling around with his equipment, and either a drum tech
or Mickey himself is beating away at the drums.  (I couldn't tell who the
drummer was from my position).   About 150 ushers are now gathered in a huge
huddle mid-arena.  The chief usher is lecturing them.  This was hilarious,
actually.   It was a big pep talk complete with "Go Team, FIGHT"  and other
macho bullshit.  They were "going to win *BIG* tonight!!!"... I went back into
the backstage area shaking my head.  At 7:00, the doors opened and all the
tapers were making a mad dash towards the taper section.

I continue hanging out with the bouncer at the intersection.  Candice
Brightman walked by and I said "Hi, love the lights, etc. etc.).  Weir walked
by obviously intent on doing something.   I tried not to be too forward about
my desire to chat with the bandmembers.   That's just what they need...YAFSTZ
jumping at them! I just stood against the wall as if that was where I was
supposed to be.

Phil comes strolling by, I caught eyes with him, and I just *had* to blurt
out something...  "Hey Phil! I'm just *Loving* the shows..."  to which he
replied, "Hey Thanks!, I really appreciate that!" and he continued walking by 
towards the Dead's kids room.   By then, more children had arrived, my
brother was starting his act, and it was clearly time to get to my seats.  I
really had no interest in sitting in the free seat I had been given with my
backstage pass.  I already had tickets sitting with a friend.  I enjoyed the
first set.  As it turned out, the seat they had given me wasn't all that much
better....section 49.   

At the break, I went immediately back to the backstage area to the kids room.
Not 3 minutes after the Dead stopped playing, Phil showed up to this room too.
My brother was hard at work with 7 kids sitting around him in a semicircle.
Brian Lesh & his older brother Graham were amongst the kids.  They were
covered in balloon hats & paper hats, and other "clown droppings" as my
brother refers to it.  Phil's standing in the hallway still, talking to a
buddy that had just shown up....about one foot away from me.  All of a sudden,
Phil starts shouting to Dennis McNally at the end of the Hallway to get Phil's
buddy a ticket for the show...

Well, first of all, I found this kinda funny...Phil searching for a Dead
ticket!  He even had his finger in the air (The universally known Deadhead
ticketless sign).  I said, "Yo PHIL, I've got an extra ticket for ya!"   "Oh
really!", he says.    "YUP, care of GDP!"   I pull out my wallet and produce
the ticket that had been given to me earlier.   Phil grabs it, shakes my hand
heartily and says, "Hey man, THANKS ALOT, That's real nice of you, What's your
Name?!!"   I said, "No Problem, I'm EDDIE Zuckerman".  I then quickly explained 
that "I'm hanging out backstage trying to catch a glimpse of my favorite 
bassist" and I further explain where the extra ticket came from and how I
ended up backstage in the first place.  Big Smiles from Phil, relief from 
Dennis McNally who now doesn't have to deal with this last minute request, 
a happy Phil's friend, and an even more psyched EDDIE who finally met one of 
his favorite musician of all time AND ironically gave him a ticket to his own
show!  

We both go into the room, and Phil starts fumbling with a hand held VCR camera 
to try to film his kids for a few minutes.  It was all pretty hectic.  Graham is
busy bopping some little girl on the head with the inflateable guitar and Phil
scolds him a little bit.  In the mean time, all the mom's are kicking back on
the couches telling European Deadtour stories.  I'm just watching this all go
down.
  
Between other reports from my brother, and what I could tell, Phil's life
revolves around his family in a big way.  Not that this surprises me, but I
was somewhat impressed that he tracked the family down quickly after the lights 
went up for the break!!!!   He's a real family man.  My brother says the same of
Mickey Hart and his son Taro. (My brother met Mickey several times before on
previous occasions at the kids room).

About 20 minutes into the break, everybody leaves the kid's room.  From what I
could gather, the moms and kids were going back to the hotel.   I guess it was
bedtime.   I passed Bill Graham in the hallway.  It was time to go back and
catch the second set.   The hallway that was near the band member's private
rooms was blocked and guarded from the rest of the backstage area.  I broke
past the crowd of frantic Deadheads all trying to get backstage without
passes.  No wonder why there's security everywhere backstage!

All in all, the feeling I got from what I saw back there was that of complete
professionalism.  This was a different world back there.  People had real jobs
and real responsibilities.   The backstage area did not come across to me as
just a big drug pit, which is how I assumed it would be several years ago.
They seemed to cling to their regular schedules.   Eating at a specific
time every day, kids to bed at their regular bedtime, etc.   There was a show
to run!  It was all very corporate!

So that's about it.   I was pretty thrilled to finally get backstage to at
least one concert in my life, and extra thrilled to do it at a Deadshow.
Further bonus was actually speaking to my personal favorite member of the
Grateful Dead, even though it was only for a minute.  I walked out of there
feeling like a 16 year old girl backstage at a New Kid's on the Block show or
something ;-)

    and the crew does a double take when they walk by - I look like Steve
    Marcus! I've always thought that I looked like someone they knew! Now
    I know who it is. Hmmm... maybe I ought to put on a few pounds. ;-)

    Thanks for the posting ..interesting stuff..
    this past sunday the globe had an article regarding the challenge that
    faced the guy who runs the garden (boston) in putting on the Dead showz
    and how it was very important for the future of this garden and
    hopefully a new one.  Several of his comments were around the Dead's
    oraganizational professonalism etc...and how at shows end some
    even walked off with brief cases etc.."like ready to catch a Delta
    shuttle"....I remember the first time I saw Garcia with a brief
    case, we larfed thinking now WHAT could he have in there??? Illicits
    and a change of t-shirts??? There was also an interview in one
    of last weeks globe with Garcia (conducted by Steve Morse) where
    he states that he sticks to his cubby hole (with vcr and stereo)
    because there are too many "geeks" back-stage.  He also mentioned
    the much needed hiatus the band is gonna take real soon ..for
    about six months.

I saw Jerry walking out of the Keystone in Palo Alto a few years ago
with a briefcase, and it occurred to me that hey!! if everybody else
carries a briefcase to go to work, why shouldn't Jerry??  8-)

    I saw Jerry with BC in hand after Wed. shows.....kinda looked like any
    Engineer from Dec to me ! :') must say it looked funny but hey I carry
    a BC too and god do I look funny !! :') whats more funny is whats in it
    the BC, Tapes lunch pictures of the Kid but no work related items....
    Jerry must have just about the same kinda stuff and maybe sheet music
    of Paul McCartney's "That Would be Something" :')

	Reminds me of the scene Chris & I were checking out before the
Wednesday BG show.  We were hanging in the balcony up behind Vince and we could
clearly see PhilAndWife finishing up a candle lite dinner in the back stage
area where Phil always hangs out. While he was puttering around after dinner,
getting ready for the show to start, he went over to a desk (obviously his) and
reached into an open briefcase (obviously his). What he pulled out of his brief
case, was, yup, you guessed it, Earplugs (can't imagine what else he'd shove
into his ears right before a show).  :-)

    Were the earplugs for him? Maybe they were for Graham.
    I've heard that sometimes Phil pulls out more than just
    earplugs from his BAG.

    I noticed at MSG that Bruce Hornsby wears cotton in his ears.  Maybe
    this is a growing trend in rock 'n roll?

RE: Ear protection

Many members of rock bands have been having serious hearing problems due to 
years of being so close to loud sounds systems.  I'm not surprised to hear that 
musician are wearing ear protection these days, especially as they get 
older/wiser.

    Nothin' trendy about it.  Musicians have been wearing ear protection
    for years ... some of 'em anyway.  Hearing problems have been common
    among rock musicians since the invention of the amplifier.

I think the problem is that one band member (like Jerry, for example) wants the 
sound up high on stage, and other band members prefer it not so loud, so they
use earplugs to compensate so everybody is happy.

    Pete Townsend of the Who was/is on a save your ears crusade. I saw him
    on MTV long time ago talking about how scary it is to not be able to
    hear those highs like he used to. I know I'm more concerned about it
    than I used to be, and I caution my kids about their blasters all the
    time (fortunately they've grown outa the headphone stage).

Yes, I was going to mention Pete Townshend.  Just talk to Pete if you want to
know about hearing problems.

Apparently, Pete constantly hears high-pitched a noise, ALL THE TIME.  It
never goes away.  It is supposed to be quite annoying!

Some folks who listen to walkmans with the volume are not doing their hearing
any good.  Those little head phones may not seem loud when you're listening
to them away from your ears, but once you're plugged in, IT IS LOUD!

    Deafness isn't fun. My father has been deaf (not totally, but he needs
    a hearing aid) since he was in his early 20's. It's heriditary but
    fortunately I got my grandfather's good hearing instead of my
    grandmother's bad. So after living with it for so long I know that good
    hearing is a blessing, and I won't abuse my ears if I can help it.
    Fortunately my father recently had an operation that helped restore his
    hearing. He still needs a hearing aid but he can hear a little without
    it (a first in my lifetime) and he's been able to hear many things that
    he couldn't before.
    
    That high-pitched noise Pete T. mentioned is tintinnitus. It can be
    very annoying. People that have it often have trouble sleeping, they
    usually need a white noise generator to make it go away. I've heard
    demos of what it sounds like, and how normal sounds can be distorted
    with this condition, it's not something I'd like to live with.
    
    I often express my opinions to my girlfriend about loud music, she
    likes it loud at home and in her car, and says that she's not worried
    because she has "perfect hearing". I hope she can still claim that in

    I used to CRANK up my Koss headphones in high school quite a bit. 
    Aerosmith & Led Zeppelin just seem to have a greater impact that way.
    But it was too loud......I like to listen to headphones at a much
    softer level now.  Clarity is more important than volume now, the sound
    is clearer to me at lower volumes.....even Led Zeppelin :^)

I have tinnitus.  I got it from a combination of:

	- serious model car and airplane hobby as a teenager.
	- loud, powerful, clean-sounding sound system in my previous car
	  (I had a 40w/channel amp, 9 band Eq, 4 Radio Shack Minimus-7 
	   speakers, 2 per channel, and my beloved Nak TD-500 deck...ahhh....)
	- too many Max Creek shows, espcially down at Jonathan Swifts.
	- too many DEAD shows (50-ish?)

Its worse in my right ear, I have a dominant tone around 9Khz, but sometimes
I get another lower tone.  The left ear rings too.

I'm very careful and selective now about what I expose my ears to. 
I wear earplugs in my car when I drive on the highway (even if I don't play 
the stereo).   The ringing is a major reason why I don't go to Dead shows
anymore, and far less Slipknot shows than I used to.

    Actually, it may be my external tk50 tape drive.  They make a high
    noise also.  Why?  Especially when you flip up the handle to load a
    tape.

Is anyone who has heard this familiar with Dylan's song "Corina Corina"?
Would you say the 2 Corina's are musically or lyrically related or not ? 

Note that Dylan's "Corina Corina" is actually based on something like an old 
Scottish folk song, I believe (I'll check my Dylan books).

ALBANY PARKS OFF-LIMITS TO DEADHEAD CAMPERS
 
ALBANY - After two years of becoming known as a place where fans
of the Grateful Dead can camp out, Albany has scrapped its policy
of allowing the rock band's followers to sleep in city parks.
     The decision to pull up stakes on the camping policy was
announced Monday by Police Chief John Dale, who last week
confirmed that city officials were unsure of what to do after
realizing that Corning Preserve could not be used as it had been.
     With the city expecting about 35,000 Deadheads to follow the
band into town for its June 11-12 engagement, officials said the
park must be clear in order to set up for the Empire State
Regatta Saturday and Sunday, June 13-14.
     Various alternatives were raised for a site to camp,
including the Port of Albany, Lincoln Park and Rensselaer Lake,
but the city decided to comply with the wishes of the band and
its promoters, who have objected to the city's open-park policy
all along.
     Grateful Dead spokesman Dennis McNally said the group has
tried for several years to discourage what was becoming a
traveling city of fans, who were becoming increasingly less
welcome as they grew.  McNally said that with other cities
banning camping, Albany's policy only added an inconsistency to
what fans had come to expect.
     Many fans who received mail-order tickets had been advised
of the anticipated lack of in-city camping and were informed
about campgrounds as far south as Rhinebeck.  McNally
acknowledged that fans probably won't drive 50 miles down the
Thruway to camp, but he speculated that some will go north to the
Adirondacks.  "They'll figure it out," he said.
     Robert Kurkela ("The Big Guy" on Terrapin BBS), a former Albany
resident and a Deadhead who last year organized a recycling
effort at Corning Preserve, said the word that the preserve was
off-limits was already out on Deadhead computer bulletin boards,
including a notice that carried an article that appeared last
week in the Times Union, apparently typed in by a fan.
     The number of people who will show up expecting a place to
park their van overnight or set up a tent is unclear.  Typically,
thousands of people without tickets follow the band in hopes of
finding tickets after they arrive.
     This summer's tour, unlike the Dead's winter tour for the
last two years, includes not only small indoor venues like the
Knickerbocker Arena, where 16,000 seats are sold out both nights,
but stadiums capable of holding 60,000 people or more.  That
means that more people than usual in tow, Kurkela said.  He said
that with Albany's concert, coming just before an appearance at
the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J., and five days after an
engagement in Buffalo, the city's expectation that only 35,000
fans will show up is unrealistic.
     "There's going to be a lot more people on the summer tour
than they think," he said.  "I've heard estimates of 80,000."
     McNally, however, predicted that only a few thousand extra
fans might come into Albany without tickets.  "Because it's an
indoor show, the opportunity for the so-called miracle ticket
will be slimmer than usual," he said.  "They'll bypass Albany and
go to New York."
     Those fans who decide to camp in local parks, Dale said,
will be picked up on any number of violations, including lack of
a permit and violating park curfews.

At the end of this article I include a copy of Brian Davidson's year-old
account of trouble on I-95 in Virginia.  To it I'd like to add that for
the past several years the Frederick County, MD police have had major drug
checkpoints (many cruisers and officers) on I-270 after every DC-area
Grateful Dead show.  They stop you if you turn on your lights, open a
window, have a Dead sticker on your car, etc. etc.  Basically anything you
do short of looking middle-aged and conservative and driving with eyes to
the fore and both hands on the wheel gets you stopped.

Then they bring a drug dog to smell your car.  In the spring of '90 an
entirely sober nethead was stopped and had a bud in his pocket detected
by the dog.  His car was confiscated, and his two passengers were
deposited on I-270 at 2AM.  He went to jail.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!  You don't have to tell a police officer diddly.  Ever!
You can only get screwed by talking to the police.

The proper answer to every question is, in your most polite but also
deadly serious tone, "Officer, am I under arrest?"  If yes, you ask
to be allowed to contact an attorney.  If no, you ask to be allowed
to proceed.  Under no circumstances (short of having his gun barrel in
your mouth!) should you answer any question EVER!

Obey direct commands regarding where and in what positions you and your
belongings should be (remember: he has a gun!), but always make it clear
that you do not "permit" him to do anything.  If he asks you to step out
of your car, roll up the windows and lock the car.  Anything less can
be interpreted as "permission" to search.

Sadly, keeping your mouth shut and refusing permission to search are a
very poor substitute for 

    (a) travelling without drugs, or
    (b) cutting your hair and peeling off the Grateful Dead stickers on
        your car.

And (b) won't help you much on I-270 after a show -- a very high
percentage of all cars gets stopped.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that they need probable cause to search
you anymore.  Fourth amendment rights have eroded tremendously in the past
decade.

If you have reason to fear the police, please don't drive on I-270 after
the show this coming Saturday.  Your chances of getting through are *not*
good.  And avoid the Petersburg, VA toll booth like the plague day or
night.  If you check a map you'll find a fairly speedy bypass route.

At 11 am, myself and 2 of my friends were traveling up from Durham NC to
see the Dead in DC. At the toll booth in Petersburg we were approached
by a few VA state police officers who were asking people questions as
they paid their tolls.  When we pulled up, they asked us where we were
coming from and where we were going.  We told them we were going to DC and
when the trooper asked why, we told them we were visiting a friend and
attending a concert.  My friend Jim, who was driving was as polite and
helpful as possible.  When the trooper asked if we were going to the Dead
show, Jim replied "yes" and we were immediately told to pull the car over
to the side of the road.  

During the next 20 minutes, we had our car, pockets, luggage and any and
every container opened and checked.  The cop was rude and even though we
were very cooperative, he continued to be rude.  No other cars were being
checked besides us, so it was obvious that they didn't like the looks of
us. Jim has a beard and ear ring, Mike has a pony tail and I'm overweight.
The fact that we were doing nothing illegal or carrying nothing illegal did 
not ease us in knowing that we had been humiliated and our rights were 
violated. We also got the feeling that they just wanted to have a reason to
put cuffs on us and take us away if we gave them any crap.

The cop kept saying stuff to us like "you guys like the Grateful Dead, where
do you keep your drugs?" and "you better not have anything in here that
will cut me" (while he was going thru my toiletree bag).  After we had been
humiliated and our stuff messed up, the cop didn't apologize or thank us
for our politeness, but said "I'll see you boys on the way back". 

I guess this experience has made me realize what people in countries like
South Africa and in Eastern Europe go through  on a regular basis.  There
was nothing "American" about the behavior of the VA state police. I can only
hope that the people of VA realize this and do something about it before
more people are violated and this country begins to resemble the countries
of the world that we commonly criticize for their treatment of their
citizens.

    Yeah, / and I had a scary occurance while heading into the Albany show
    on Thursday...
    
    We were walking into the show from our car (parked on the street) and
    realized / didn't have his wallet.  We turned around and when we got
    back to the car and opened the trunk (his wallet was in his travel bag)
    we scarcely got done shutting the trunk before two officers came over
    and started really harassing us.
    
    It was fairly obvious that we were in town for the shows, and they
    seemed to think that we were scalpers.  They basically kept on asking
    to see the trunk, and out of principal (and perhaps stupidity) I asked
    them why they wanted to see it.  So before they asked a third time, I
    let in and opened it up for them.  They obviously found nothing but
    camp gear, a guitar, some drum equipment, and /'s clothes, and let us
    go on our way, but I could not help thinking...  I've never felt so out
    helpless when conversing with a law officer... they did not listen to a
    word we said and forced us into a surrender or escalate problem...
    
    Luckily I knew when to surrender, and luckily when we let them take
    over, they were reasonable after they saw the trunk had no extra
    tickets or other illegal items. 
    
    I've never in my life been in a situation (even this one was minor)
    where I felt I had no rights, but it is an eye-opening experience...

	more trouble, miss the show, win in the end but at what price...

    Auditorium, Los Angeles show), is out now (May).  Some strong Pigpen,
    and other good stuff -- with a great sound mix whipped up by Dan Healy
    and Don Pearson ... enjoy.

Be very careful when you vote this year - the supreme court will most likely
have another justice retire during the next presidential term.  vote for
bush, and you and I will live by an increasingly conservative law of the land
for the next 40 YEARS....

enough to make me vote for a complete idiot as long as that idiot
appoints someone liberal to the s.c... presidential terms are 4 years;
supreme court terms are a LIFETIME.

    
    think of it this way:
    
    if an asshole is voted in as president, we deal with him for 4 years,

    We've already had twelve years of this crap.  Reagan scared me silly,

    Perot scares me too.  It's a gut reaction, but little I've heard 
    about him has done anything to assuage that feeling.  I was tsorry
    to tsee Tsongas drop out.  Tsighhh.....  Clinton's becoming more
    appealing cause I won't vote for the other two!
    Blackmun will likely be the next to go.  The Senate Judicary Committee
    has told Bush it will not consider any candidate until after the 
    election so we still have hope.

Well hey, it looks like there's something current to talk
about! I thought the show was a blast. Jerry was somewhat 
restrained but played well throughout. The only tune I thought
he cut loose on was Breadbox, but man, it was nice to hear him
play. He's looking pretty good, weight looks to be about the
same as Phil's, haircut similar to Mickey's. Gotcha! :-)
He looked a little thinner, nothing mind-blowing, though.
He actually spoke to the crowd once: "How y'all doin'?"
which may be more than he's said in quite a while!
Hair was a little shorter, and he had no beard unless my
nonexistent ability to notice and remember these things
is playing tricks on me.

Opening band was Vince's Affordables, who played a short
but tasty set which included Long Long Way, and- get this-
Here Comes Sunshine and also the Golden Road to Unlimited
Devotion! What fun. I gotta wonder what's in store for the
December shows!

Ken Kesey hosted a costume contest which took place during
the Vince/Jerry I break and the Jerry I/Jerry II break. He
was in typical form, cracking jokes and being the big ol'
bear that he is. The two finalists were a butterfly with
incredible multicolored wings sporting a peace sign, and 
two people, a man and a woman, who were a plug and socket,
respectively. When the plug plugged into the socket they
lit a bunch of little lights which were on the two costumes.
It was obviously sexual, if I'm not getting the picture across.
Very cute, but the butterfly was beautiful, and easily won
with the most applause.

That's about it from me, I'm sure other views will be
checkin' in soon. A good time, welcome back Jer! Nice to
meet you, Joe D., and hey Lara, I found where red turns to
purple a couple times during the break but didn't see ya.
Oh, and I must dutifully report that Steve-too was splendidly
attired in a nethead t-shirt slightly altered to pay tribute
to the net's most reviled pranksters :-)

That could be, though he's never really smoked a lot during a performance.

    I just caught a picture in todays paper of Jerry - He has a stylin
    hair-do and nice trimed beard.  He does look a bit more energetic and
    bright.  It is tough to say weather he lost 40 plus pounds becuase of
    his closes and for as big as he is who knows.

Bill was definitely too far gone.  Jerry trimmed his beard, but there
definitely was a beard.  He may have lost 40 punds, but he was still
in his old black T-shirt, so it's hard to tell.  The T just kind of
hangs.  He didn't smoke a single cig on stage during the show.  First
set was slow.  He must've said "How y'all doing?" to check to see if
people's still awake ;-).  Second set was excellent though.  I'm looking
forward to the Tempe and Oakland shows if I can get tickets.  I sent out
my mail order today so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    I've never been to a Jerry show, but have had people tell me many fall
    asleep during a slow set...must be the adjustment, er misallignment

    I fell asleep once at a dead show at the War Memorial in Buffalo during
    the '73 fall tour.  It was probably a mixture of hitching across NY,
    lack of sleep, and something that went for $15.00 back then but you
    probably would be hard put to find it for 10 times that amount today.
    Oh yeah, and tickets at the door.  I think it was the horns during
    Weather Report Suite that lulled me into dreamland.  Very strange
    weekend.  Spent the next day trying to hook up with people from
    my high school since I spent the night at Buffalo State.  Nobody
    was enrolled there!  Found out later I was at the teacher college
    and not the University!   And ten years later (at the 10th high school
    reunion) I found some of these people had seen me at the show, though
    I never saw them.  And then there was the trip to Cornell, but that's
    another story....

	Jerry has a new guitar...	It's more or less the
   shape of the tiger or rosebud (with the dancing skeleton woman)
   but it is a dark bluish black, with tan along the edges and
   brown on the sides.  The color scheme makes the guitar look hollow,
   but I think it is a solid piece of wood.  The "logo" is the round
   part of a steal your face, a lightning bolt splitting a circle
   into a red part and a blue part.  It looks enameled, the lightning
   bolt looks like a pearl color.  The colors on the logo are subdued.

   And it sounds great!  And Jerry sure seems to love to noodle with
   it, we were treated before several songs to long tune up noodles.

More (subjective) info on David Murray, who sat in with the Dead last 
Wednesday night at MSG...

   As noted above, David Murray is an East Bay native. He currently lives in
   New York and is one of the most prolific musicians under the sun - he cut
   two albums last week. A founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet,
   Murray plays in settings ranging from duo to 21-piece big band, including
   everything in between. His octet is remarkable. He plays tenor sax and
   bass clarinet, the latter of which he trotted out during Dark Star the
   other night and treated the crowd and band to some of his virtuosic
   slap tone technique.
   
   As someone mentioned, many critics regard him as the best tenor player in
   the world. The idea of "best" anything is specious but he is unquestionably
   one of the most brilliant, dynamic players around. He often collaborates
   with Butch Morris, an equally brilliant composer, arranger and cornet
   player. The recent release "David Murray Big Band conducted by Butch Morris"
   is well worth investigating. Also recommended in the big band context are a
   pair of CDs - "Live at Sweet Basil, Vols. 1 & 2." Other recent releases
   include a "Special Quartet" featuring McCoy Tyner, Fred Hopkins & Elvin
   Jones and the above mentioned "Shakill's Warrior." Look for something called
   "Fast Life" - a just-released disc featuring guest tenor Branford Marsalis.
   Later this year, look for "Picasso Suite." Murray lacks nothing in output.
   With nearly 150 recordings under his belt, he has far more on disc than
   you'll likely find in any local store. Still, there's plenty to choose from.
   
   Murray's style is informed by sources from Coleman Hawkins to John Coltrane.
   But the result is inimitably his own. He is at once a beautiful balladeer
   and one of the most daring avant-gardists imaginable. The power and fervor
   with which he plays can be utterly daunting, be it a gospel-inflected blues
   flight or unbridled cacophony. All told, he's a bad m.f.
   
   He tours constantly, often in Europe and Japan. Today, he's off to Brazil.
   New Yorkers will often find him at the Village Vanguard, Sweet Basil, Fat
   Tuesdays or Licoln Center; he'll be playing the San Francisco Jazzfest on
   Halloween. He had a blast playing with the Dead and I believe the feeling
   was quite mutual.

Last night the break started at 8:45 and someone said the show started at
7:30 (I got in late) ... don't know what time the break ended but the show
ended at about 10:30.

    Impressions from last night in Providence.
    
    I like Providence.  It's sort of like a miniature version of 
    Boston.  Strong ethnic flavor, interesting architecture and 
    bustling.
    
    My crowd arrived there around 4:30, parked in a garage near 
    the CC, then walked around downtown for a while.  We went to 
    a place called "Challenger" for a cocktail then across the 
    street to "Christopher's".  I had said "Christie's" before 
    but I had them mixed up.  Christies is in Newport.
    
    Anyway, a few more cocktails and food.  Two different kinds 
    of crab cakes, steamed littleneck clams and raw oysters.  
    Good stuff!
    
    Started walking to the show around 7:00pm and the outside 
    scene was excellent.  As mentioned security was very loose, 
    inside and outside.  The cops(?) set up a sort of "amnesty 
    zone" where vendors hung out.  I couldn't believe the number 
    and openness of the Hippie Crack(tm) vendors.  At times the 
    whole area sounded like a steam plant with nitrous bottles 
    roaring and hissing away.  I was watching a couple of guys 
    suck that stuff in and for a minute it looked like their 
    heads were going to explode.
    
    I picked up a couple of stickers, one was a drawing of Jerry 
    and the other was the "Cat's Under the Stars" deal.  
    
    Getting inside was a breeze and our seats were not already 
    otherwise occupied!

    extra 1/2 hour for him to make it back.  Dozens of people 
    selling ice cold beers, etc...
    
    Good show, excellent time and a nice venue.

    	I had a good time last night, too.  Deane and I rode in together, got
    there around 6:30 or so.  We couldn't believe the amount of tanks,
    either!  All you heard was "SSsshhhhhhhhhhhhhoooshhhh" every ten
    seconds.  We walked into the fountain place (can't remember the name),
    saw MJ and met a couple of her friends.  
    
    	Here's where the story of my p_name comes in.  I was hungry so Deane 
    and I walked to the other side of the bar, where they had tables set up so 
    that you could sit down and eat.  All of the tables were full, except for 
    one which was slid next to another table.  We walked up to the table and I 
    asked the couple sitting next to it if it was OK that we sat there.  
    
    Man:  	"Well, there's only one chair."
    Me:  	"That's OK, we'll grab that extra one over there."
    Woman: 	"Well, we don't want you to sit here."  (Now, she sounded like
    she was kidding around so Deane and I laughed and we proceeded on
    getting a chair).
    Man:	"Yeah, you can't sit here." 
    (They still sounded like they were kidding around)
    Me and Deane: "Hahahaha, funny" 
    
    Then I started to sit down, and the man puts his hand on the chair and
    said, "NO, you aren't sitting here."
    
    Me: 	"Are you guys serious? Is somebody else sitting here or 
    	something?"
    Woman: 	"Nobody is sitting there.  We just do NOT want YOU to sit here!"
    Deane:  	"Are you guys from New York or something?"
    Woman: 	"Yes, we are."
    Deane:	"We're outta here..."	
    
    We left feeling really stupid because all along we thought these people
    were joking around.  There were friendly Deadheads all over the
    place yet these people were so bitter!  Weird.  Reading back, it sounds
    like a stupid story but I guess you had to be there.

As a New Yawker, I must take offense at this generalization.  I am sympathetic

	I danced my ass off!!!  There was so much room...almost too
	much!!! Things couldn't have been better for me.

	As for the mean people, well, they sucked! No doubt, I can safely 
	say people like them would make fine specimin's for laboratory
	experiments on rudity.

	My New York comment was uncalled for, but at the time, it just 
	belted out, strange enough, they said they were from New York....
	People like Phyllis, Adam, Lisa..and others, reaffirm the fact

  Ya got that one right JC!!!  I'll never forget my two week stay in Great
 Britian. We bumped into ONE rude person the entire time there.

Actually Dean, i don't recommend for you to go to ireland to find a mate! my
friends there say it is tough going!

we did encounter one fairly snobby guy running a B&B.  we elected not to stay
at his place - he was a bit high on himself.  other then that guy, literally
everyone was friendly - the police, store owners, B&B operators, etc.  people,
in some cases, literally go out of their way for you...  wait 'til i post
my england review and you'll see...

	dignified, respectful middle-age is over-rated.

    according to some of my friends at SQF (and some personal experince
    here to back it up) they often do well coming here and we ("we" being
    single american males) can do pretty well over there sometimes in large
    part because of accents...  of course, if they only want to hear you
    *talk* the phone is a lot cheaper than air fare... :^)  :^)  :^)
    
    it was kind of funny a couple of years ago taking a firend to the dead
    shows in albany...  he had a woman friend of his with him on a visit
    and she busted his chops CONSTANTLY!  according to her "he's not nearly
    as popular at home as he is here...  american women seem to love to
    hear him talk...  bloody shame he asn't got anything useful to say..."
    :^)  she also alluded to the fact that many of her friends had fallen
    for the same trap when american men had made thier acquaintance...

I'm sure there's a word or phrase for it - the allure of the exotic
foreigner.  I worked my way through (a couple) colleges in the hotel
and restaurant business on the Florida tourist coast...used to see
it constantly.  Europeans and Canadians (especially French Canadians).
Even fell for it once myself, much to my dismay.

It gets old, after awhile.  Save your money, Deane.

I think there is an element of truth to that. It is interesting to compare
Australia and the US from that regard. Both have existed as countries for about
the same time, but Australia adopted the social and political heirtage of the
UK (not that we had a choice) and the US made an effort to reject them. As a
result of the fresh start, the US does seem younger, brasher.

Lest anyone take this as an insult (and it isn't), you also shed a couple of
millenia's worth of excess baggage. In many ways urban Australians had no
real sense of national identity until the 70s; not too surprising when the
highest aspiration of your political leaders was to be invitied to an audience
with H.M. Queen.

    Phoenix....another succesfull journey into the heart of the dead dream.
    
    Trip and show report...
    We lit out Thursday morning under a clear Colorado blue sky with a
    glove box full of tapes and a head full of smiles. Made Holbrook Az
    that nite...ate at Jerrys there, (just had to, ya know) beers and good
    nite. Up and on the road early. Pulled into PHX around noon and found
    out that our rooms would not be ready until 3:30. Ate some of the best
    Mexican food I've ever had and then bought a bunch of beer and headed
    to the White Tanks National Park,  desert mts. I used to run around in
    20 years ago, called the tanks because of the unusual config of canyons
    and waterfalls that, when it does rain there, funnel all the water into
    natural storage areas or "tanks." There was no water in the lower
    areas and it was too hot (85) to hike a couple of hours into the mts to the
    actual springs and larger tanks. So we drank too many beers in the
    heat, the logical thing to do, and turned over rocks looking for
    scorpians and such. Found a shed ex-o-skeleton (<---dead related) 
    of a real small scorpian and chased a blue tailed lizard around, but no
    snakes,,,i was bummed. 
    Back to the hotel, check in and TO DE SHOW!
    
    3-4-94 DSP
    miss 1/2 step kicked in and we know it was gonna be a grate show! 
    LRR and Ramble on Rose were cool, but the ME and My Uncle, which we
    heard different versions of all the way down outa south colorado kicked
    ass, a so so Bird Song for me and a grate Promised Land. We wandered at
    set break and met some friends (Tom Lawlor among them) close to down
    front and set with them second set. Iko had me smilin and one of the
    best LLR ever followed. Crazy Fingers I really like and this was a good
    one, the jam was excellent, but they ended it a little wierd. Estimated
    Prophet...us singing "Arizona,..." instead of "california" was fantastic! 
    d/s, miricle, black peter are kind of a blur. Throwing Stones is a good
    tune for me...but the U. S. BLUES encore was freaking fantastic. Patty
    pulled into the middle of the aisle so I could see the U.S. Blues
    skeletons dancin on the screen and I lost it with laughter! 
    
    the parking lot sounds went "wa wa wa "
    total craziness back at the Motel 6 with all the heads after the show

    Met friends I went to high school with and backpacked with 20 years ago
    for MORE mexican food...weird, weird, weird...we;ve all come...
    and gone....a long way since then. They thought we were all crazy....
    then TO DE SHOW!!!
    
    Stranger opener was called by our dear friend hoot gibson, he woke up
    that morning singing it! Stagger Lee was a good one, another cowboy
    song, El PAso which we danced our asses off too, I love Loose Lucy,
    Broken Arrow and Eternity sounded the best I've ever heard them, and
    we hadn't heard a Bertha in a few years, so that made the end of the
    1st set for me. I had a little problem during set break that nite,
    suffice to saw the DSP security/medical teams and AZ uniformed cops were 
    real helpful and REAL nice considering the situation. But 
    the opening licks of China Cat pulled me back and that whole second set, 
    china-->rider way to gohome, ST. (<----lots of smiles there from me and 
    my "helpers" during the "I'm still walkin, so I must be able to dance." 
    part) he's gone (<--even more smiles here, related to me again) 
    d/s watchtower, Stella, Sat nite gets rave reviews from me, of
    course I was  raving lunitic during most of it!!! Hoot called fought
    the law, only the second time for me. good and clean.
    There was NO Nobody's fault that I heard. 
    
    behaved myself in the parking lot, back to the motel for steamed
    shrimp! and total craziiness...the hotel security gaurd, Barney Fife to
    some, Officer Opie to others, was a riot! We were laughin so hard, I
    lost my voice! "It must suck bein you, oppie!"
    
    3-6-94 DSP
    picked my sister from Tucson and her boyfriend up that morning MORE
    MExican food that was fantastic (we threatened to kidnapp the cook and
    bring her back to colo, the waitress said 'I'd miss my mama!")got tuned
    up and TO DE SHOW!! had to do the will call thing thru tixbast*rd so we
    went rather early and bought a sh*tload of t's and stickers, This was
    my sisters and her BF FIRST show...makes ya feel good when ya do that!
    HSF was being called everywhere, and sure enough...Spoonful, Jack-a-roe
    (I haven't heard too many Jack-a roes) masterpiece were good, but the
    first BEW Patty and I have heard in YEARS KICKED!!!!!!! "Tumbledown
    shack in Bigfoot county..." and I loved Let It Grow. 
    
    Second Set I had mixed feelings about, Easy Answers and Lazy River are
    sounding good, the Playin was short and sweet, no long jam, EYES!!!!!
    made the entire show along with the BEW for Patty and I...we coulda
    left right then and there completely satisfied. D/s, I called the Wheel
    on the first noodle of the song (glad we didn't leave!)
    Hoot recognized Last Time way before any of us, being the Stones fan he
    is...I must admit, IT ROCKED! Attics was slow and sweet! followed by
    that rockin GOOD LOVIN! I would have prefered a different encore, but
    Liberty is sounding better and better every time I hear it. did the
    song always say "leave me alone" after the "Freedom, Liberty.." part??
    
    The visuals were fantastic all nites, esp. during d/s, Us blues, and
    Last Time. 
    
    A rough drive Monday after dropping my sister off, cold rain and snow
    from Flagstaff to north of Alboturkey. Decided to crash in Bernillo and
    sleep in the next day to let the snow plows clear  passes around Santa
    Fe and Las Vegas N.Mex. Which was  good plan. Tuesday we hardly hit any
    snow on the road even though  it snowed the whole way. We drove 1600
    miles and I had to put the Donkey into 4wheel drive 15 miles from home.
    That last 15 miles though...10 cars in the ditch, most upside down, a
    bus crashed, 4x4s every where...could tell we were back in Colo!!!
    people drive like sh*t here...
    
    All in all the scene was pretty cool, lots of vending and very little
    GDM cops, but LOTS of narcs "sweeping" (as they called it) the parking
    lot and shows Friday and Sunday. A couple of them hung out with us
    Sunday at the show second set, but we were hip to them and didn't
    really do anything that would have made them pay attention to us
    anyway...they just were hanging out bein Az assholes. 
    
    We ate a ton of Mexican food, drank a ton of beer and danced like
    madmen!!! I've probably left out tons of details and said more than I
    should about others....my voice is still gone.....boy, being back to
    reality sure is tough!

    Wow RFB!! Thanx for taking me outta the office for a bit. I rilly
    enjoyed that! I just hope Opie was able to take the jeers in stride
    and roll with the punches :) I wonder if'n he's like a friend of mine
    here at work who's just one of the absolutely nicest people you'd ever
    want to meet, always going out of his way to help, never a bad thing to
    say about someone, and always able to look on the bright side of
    things. Take for instance when he had a spot of trouble while working
    on his truck out in the parking lot on Tuesday. It seems he forgot to
    reconnect the gas line to the fuel filter before trying to start it
    sending it up in flames :^O Yet when I expressed some sympathy for his
    misfortune he quipped about how he was able to "brighten the evening a
    bit"!

    andy...I'm more like yer friend than Officer Opie was! sorry to hear
    about his truck! I'd a "sat down and cried". I was always nice to Opie,
    even got jeered at for callin him sir, he was alright...just didn't
    understand us....can't really blame him...it WAS his own fault for bein
    so funny though! like when he spent 30 mins, tryin to get this one head
    to move his car, embedded in other cars, the head moved his car up and
    down about 15 times, grinding the gears, then parked it exactly where
    it had been before. allthe while, bout 6 heads had jumped the fence
    into the closed down swimmimg pool, played ball etc, and then when they
    were jumpimg out, Opie finally sees them and yells" Pools closed you
    can't be in there"! "jeez, they'd been there 30 mins opie"!from the
    balcony....funny stuff

	Well I'm almost caught back up at work so I'll add my review
	to rfb's.

	Hit the road Thursday morning about half and hour behind rfb and crew.
	This was our first long road trip with Travis, our six month old, and
	travelling with a baby can be quite a challenge since instead of
	resting when your not driving, you're entertaining instead :^)
	On the road twelve hours and landed in  Holbrook Az a couple hours
	behind rfb, couple of homebrews, fed and watered the family ;^),
	quick visit with rfb,patty,divide,hoot and to bed - well almost - 
	spent another hour or so entertaining the Trav-man, then to bed...

	Up early friday, drove from Holbrooke, through Show Low , the Apache
	Reservation with beautiful mountains views :^), thru Globe, and then
	through the desert in bloom with yellows, reds, purples, blues :^) :^),
	and on into Phoenix.  Arrived at the retirement community where
	we were staying at around 1pm, unpacked, and pomptly started coctail
	hour :^)   Left baby-care instructions with the retired couple - We
	stayed with a retired couple who are really close friends of Danielle's 
	Then off to the show!

	Arrived at the parking lot boogied over to the bx office to meet up
	with DC to trade tix. So TomLawlor and Rosanne on the way but had to
	run (wished we coulda stayed with ya Tom!). 
	
    	3-4-94 DSP
    	Psyched for the miss 1/2 step opener, LRR was standard, and I love
	Ramble on Rose - after a relatively slow start we really cut lose for 
	the Me&My->River, Bird Song always a pleasure, a rockin Promised 
	Land to finish off. 
	Second set started off grate with Iko (our daughter Natalie's fav Dead
	tune) -- LLR was nice but didn't seem to peak like I've heard it before,
	Crazy fingers was cool but like rfb said, it ended a little rough,
	Estimated cranked, but I got bummed when they left without an Eyes.
	INCREDIBLE DRUMS/SPACE, very psycadelic back drop behind the boysz

	Saturday:
	My morning with the Trav-man - got up took care of business, read
	the paper and chatted with the old man. Got a tour of the Retirement
	community - with multiple club houses, golf courses, swimmming pools,
	tennis courts, raquet ball courts, exercise rooms, pool tables, 
	card tables, ceramics shop, woodworking shop, metal-working shop, 
	painting room, 	restaurants/lounges, grand ball room -- like WOW!!!  
	this is the way I want to retire!!! An aftrernoon swim, coctail
	hour, with some fine marg's and home-made Mex-food.  and off to 
	the show again!

	(Tonight the night Danielle takes care of me and drives home 8^)
	couple o beers in the lot a little shopping and in the door!

    	Stranger opener was grate! Stagger Lee was nice. El Paso, what can I
	say - love them cowboy songs! My first Loose Lucy!!!  Broken Arrow and
	Eternity also my first which was nice, but got mixed feelings about 
	these - gonna havta listen to the tapes.  Bertha picked me back up 
	and got me rockin again!!!
	Second set opened with a real nice China-Rider, Way to go home was good
	(but was even better on the way home ;^) and St.ofC->Gone was grate!
	another outrageaous D/S show, love Watchtower!!! Stella was nice, 
	and Sat night was a rockin closer!!!	Encore of Fought the Law
	another first with so-so feelings...

	Sunday: 	
	My morning to sleep in :^) Grate breakfast - tour of the flea market
	(I'm bringing my truck down next time!) - coctail hour - off to the
	show by myself this time...  did some shopping in the lot, and chatted
	with some pretty cool heads while I looked fer someone I knew - 
	to no avail...

	Headed into the show just as they were starting H->S->F, danced my way
	to a good spot in the aisle and proceeded to cut loose!!!  Spoonful
	was really good, loved Jack-a-roe!, called masterpiece and got 
	a coupla "whoa, how'd you know" looks from my neighbors :^) Brwon-eyed
	women was grate, and Let It Grow sailed!!!! 
	Second set opened a little off to me with Easy Answers and Lazy Road...
	More new sonds I need to get used to...	 Got really psyched for Playin
	and then went nuts when they broke into Eyes!!!  I missed this so much
	Friday night - made my whole weekend to hear it!!! Started losing my 
	stamina and went to chill out at the concessions during D/S and 
	Wheel=nice, Last Time=another first, rocked!!, Attics=best I'd heard!,
	GOOD LOVIN!!!!! = nuf said!  Hot, Sweaty, Exhausted -- left during 
	Liberty...

	Monday:
	Long Way to go Home - 12 hours to Raton pass, hit cold rain and snow, 
	stayed in hotel for the	night.. pizza delivery...

	Tuesday:
	more cold rain and snow - slow ride home


	Travelling with baby was better than expected!
	Grate time with Danielle's friends the retired folks - cool people!!  
	Grate shows!!  Lotsa firsts!	
	Cool vending scene - new stickers and t-shirts!!!
	Lotsa partying 8^)  lotsa driving :^/

    	Did anyone else catch the St. Stephen teases throughout the 
    	Spring Tour????  After hearing some tapes, it appears that 
    	there were clearly 2 prominant teases during the Nassau 
    	expedition, especially at the beginning of Space on the night
    	Bruce H. was there.
    
    	This is pretty serious business  ;-)
    
    	Also, with Bobby taking a break from his own tour, perhaps that'll
    	give him a little more time for brushing up on some old stuff 
    	(Lost Sailor) and hopefully perfecting some of the new stuff....
    
    	If they actually play Highgate VT, anythings possible!

last night's show:

A 6 song first set....seems short.  any idea how long it was?  45 minutes?

And 2 new songs in 2 nights...

One report off rec.music.gdead had last nights 1st set at about 50 minutes.
Pretty short.  So far the only description I've seen of the new songs
is about Samba:

    When I was at RFK, on the field, there was a small gated off area
   with a sign that said "DEAF ZONE". There was a woman on a pedestal
   with a songbook and a light shining on her, and she was doing sign
   language to all the lyrics.....I never saw this at any other shows.

They were in Boston last fall, too.

I saw something that might be similar up in Highgate.  One of the repeater
stacks had a handlettered sign on it that said something like Hearing Impaired
Area.  I figured for those that were indeed hearing impaired, sitting right
by one of those stacks should work for you.

    I stood about 50 feet of off the right set of speakers
    on the stage for the whole show and I was definitely hearing
    impaired afterwards.  Highgate sound seemed louder than normal
    to me.  I thought the video screens were an excellent addition
    to the visuals, especially for the near-sighted like myself.
    They need to do something about that annoying time delay between
    sight and sound.

    Check out Micky Hart's Rolling Thunder album for the 
    studio *guitar* version, the original beat came to Mickey
    from a water pump, thus the name The Pump Man or The Pump Song.
    
    Is this common knowledge? 'cause its one of my favorite Dead

And you can hear Micky groaning about this.

This happened right after Mickey's dad ripped off the band of some serious
$$ and split.  Bobby's snide little remark may have been enough to send
Mickey into "retirement" for a few years.

    I recall an interview once on the Deadhead hour where someone explained
    the pump song was derived by the sound of this pump outside either
    Barlow's or Hunters house.....I have this on tape somewhere...

    I heard that interview too.  If ya listen to the album
    Rolling Thunder, the Pump Song begins with an outdoor
    recording of a water pump making its rythmic beat and then
    the instrumental intro fades in to begin the song.  Pretty
    cool album, but I haven't listened to it in about 7 yrs.
    ('cause its just that, an album, vinyl ya know)

There's at least one GDH where they go into the Pump Song deconstruction.
It was Mickey's barn I believe, and he used to hang out there really
stoned and this pump had a neat sound so he made a tape of it and 
handed it to Weir who built a song around it.  If you've ever heard
a hand pump you can still detect the basic "pump" sound in the 
song.

Mickey's dad managed or was in some managment position with the Dead
at one point and just basically took off with a load of cash that he
had access too.  Don't know if anything legal was ever done about it,
but Mickey was a tad upset and left.  From other sources that I can't
pin down at the moment, I believe that the song, "He's Gone" was 
written partially about this incident.  "Steal your face right off your head"
and "A knife in the back, and more of the same" are some lyrics that
come to mind that seem to relate.

... and whats really interesting about "He's Gone" is that somewhere
the "knife in the back" phrase turned into "pat on the back".

I'd love to see the "Every Time Played" list of He's Gones in Deadbase 
annotated with "knife" vs. "pat" listing.
