If you go to the Flea Market on Route 85 just north of Atlanta you
can get great prices on tapes. The guy does not charge tax either.
I have been buying Maxell MRS-100 tapes for $1.85/tape when I buy at least
20, $2.00 in singles !! If you are going to be in Atlanta for the showz,
let me know and maybe we can work something out and I'll get 'em for you
in advance.

The MX90 and MX110 are more of a "low-end" metal tape. The shell is
similar to the XLII. There is a higher grade metal (don't know the
designation) that is more expensive than the XLII-S.

Specs and blurbs from the labels:

    	MX
    		Tape Selector:	IEC TYPE IV
    		Bias: METAL
    		EQ: 70us

"New Super Stabilized Pure (SSP) metal particles have
improved high-frequency output by 2.0dB. (Compared
with IEC TYPEIV reference tape E912BH)"

    	XLII-S
    		Tape Selector:	HIGH[CrO2](IEC TYPE II)
    		Bias: HIGH[CrO2]
    		EQ: 70us

"The use of Super-Energy, Fine Epitaxial magnetic particles
has improved MOL by 1.5dB at the low frequencies and by 5.5
dB at the high frequencies. The noise level is also
decreased by 2dB. (Compared with our HIGH[CrO2]-position
    		reference tape 211.)

Which is better? Beats the sh*t out of me! I definitely prefer the
heft and solidity of the shell of the XLII-S.

The Maxell MX-S tape has the same nice "shell" as the XLII-S, just as the
MX tape has the same shell as the more "pedestrian" XLII. Can't say that I
really notice any difference, but I do like the -S shells better -- they semm
sturdier, somehow.

FWIW - I've found that MX's saturate at a much higher recording level than
the MX-S's and I tend to prefer them over the MX-S' for that reason -
particularly since they come in C110's. In general though, I will use
whichever of the two is available at the time of any given live
recording situation. You just can't set the levels as high with MX-S's.

They've changed things around a bit there, and I had to

Ken,

They hassled you a bit at Home Entertainment Electronics? I need to order
some more metals very soon. Did they give you the $1.94 price per tape?
What did you have to say to them to get that price?

BTW, 1.94 per metal tape is next to impossible to beat. Occasionally I
go to the Minor Chord in Action. They sell the same tapes for over $4.00
a tape!

> They hassled you a bit at Home Entertainment Electronics? I need to order

Not hassled, but they didn't agree with the 1.94 price. The person I was
dealing with over the phone was new, so that might explain it. After getting
higher quotes I said thanks, and called other places. Then I called HED
back and said I've always paid 1.94 for mx90 and the person said ok, how many ?
;-) So I placed my order and they still were going to send them c.o.d.
even though I said no c.o.d. at least twice.

So it takes a little friendly talking to get the 1.94 price, and you've got
to double triple check on c.o.d. A friend of mine has had similar experiences
with them.

Next order, I'm gonna try Big Daddy Electronics. Supposedly very good prices.

Just thumbing through the April issue of Relix (hey! Slipknot got a
review!) and someone wrote a letter pointing out the lifetime guarantee
from Maxell and TDK. If you have any broken or worn out tapes, pack
them up in a box and mail them off (even without the cases) and they'll
replace them with equivalent tapes, no charge! The address for Maxell
is on the tape inserts, TDK is on the back of the label sheet.

Also a good way to get new tapes for those old worn-out car tapes of
    albums you never listen to.

I have a bunch of broken/stretched Maxells at home, think I'll send off
    for a free case!

I never thought of this before.

	SAX90 1.95
	MA110 2.38
	SA90 1.55

	MX100 2.98
        XLII90 1.52
        MX90 2.29
        XLII100 1.84
        MX60 1.59

They also list some prices for Sony, Casio and Yamaha (I didn't even know the
latter two made tapes).
Disclaimer says "not responsible for typos" so I guess I should say same.
And you need the AD but I'll bet a copy of my copy would do.

    Bob,

Just a quick note on those prices from E33rd. Make sure you check the
*New York Times* every Sunday as their prices fluctuate weekly! A week
ago their price on the XLIIS-100s was 2.45 each.

I'd also be leery about ordering those TDK MA110s. Over the last week
I've had three different decks eat these tapes. I'd send em
back to TDK but they'd probably send me replacement 110s, which I don't
    want...

Good news from our friends at Terrapin Tapes. I just spoke with Ken Hays and
he says he will give anyone from the net a 5% discount! He's not real familiar
with internet, The Well, and all that but just tell him you're from the inter-
net or the "dead-net", as he calls it:-) and he'll cut 5% from your total. It
ain't the biggest news in the world, but every little bit helps. As always he
says he'll beat anyone's price by 5% on NEW Maxells (this does not include a
lot of the places in NY City that sell older Maxells).

I have about 21 10.5" tapes. These are old tapes, purchased from 1971
through around 1976. They are all TDK or MAXELL and in as good shape
as possible given their age. They were played and recorded exclusively
on a Revox A77 (which bit the dust a few years ago...I could not
    stomach the estimated repair bill).

These tapes originally cost about $10.00 per reel.

I'd be interested in either selling these or trading for good quality
blank cassettes (MAXELL- XLIIS, MX, or MXS).

I believe that I still have the take-up reel and hubs around too.

Why? Maxell rated in about the same place they rated when CR did the same
report around three years ago.

Please take these ratings with a grain of salt. Chances are that their test's
for "dynamic range" are based on the tape's ability to reproduce the dynamic
range of a Madonna CD. Deadheads prefer Maxell probably because Deadshows
sounds better on them. This is my HO.

Maxell vs Brand X.

This is from a MAXELL user...ME!

I think Maxell is on the way down (not fast mind you!!). They keep changing
their tape housing and cheapening them each time. XLII of today is less
quality than the XLII of 80's (earlier).

The XLIIS seems to be holding out ok housing wise.

On the other hand - I do like the change in the outside clear plastic
with the rounded edges.

I've used Sony and TDK as well. The only thing to ever die on me was a MAXELL.
But that is probably meaningless as I only own a handful of tdk/sony tapes.

I'm planning to place an order with Terrapin Tapes in the very near
future. I called this morning and the price for Maxell XLII 90 is
    still $1.85 in a 10-pack. The price for XLIIS 90 is $2.15. (I wonder
if these packs include Max Points?)

He doesn't charge shipping if the order is more than 50 tapes, and
he is still offering the 5% discount for techno-weenies on the net.

you don't have to order in multiples of 10; you can order any combination of
any kinds of tapes that you desire (i usually get a mixture of chrome and metal
and a mixture of 90 and 100 min); the tapes that you receive are unopened,
still in the Maxell plastic wrapper; so yes, they include the Max Points

75.80Trade In Those MAX POINTS!TRETOP::SAMILJANFri Oct 15 1993 12:2916
For those of you who are collecting Max Points from Maxell tapes...

I spoke to the Maxell Awards Program people this morning. They
tell me that the Max Points program will continue beyond the
end of 1993, BUT they will be revamping the program. At the
start of 1994, it will take 750 points to get a CD (instead of
the current 500), and they will be issuing a list of CDs from
which to choose (about 2500 titles). There will be other changes,
    too.

I think I'll spend some time opening all my unused tapes this
weekend, and getting my points together to order a few CDs.
I'd hate to be sitting on some old Max Points and suddenly have
    them devalued by 50%.

Are there enough people in the file who'd be interested in doing a bulk
order for MX-90's? I don't see too much of a need for them right now, at
least for most dead tapes, but for taping records in good condition or
CD's, I can see the use. I'd be into a box of 10, but to distribute the
shipping charges I think a bulk order might be good.

They're always super prompt with shipping and usually throw in extra

my latest order came back with a cassette single from a band called
Stone Soup. So, I stuck it in the tape deck while driving this
weekend... and it got me pretty misty eyed! The song was called "Cloud
to Cloud," not exactly the best musical work I've ever heard, but it
was about Jerry. The lyrics went like this:

"I've been on your trail now for twenty years and four.
Can't bear to think of when you won't be there no more.
When you played we came around, followed you from town to town.
Up there you'll still draw a crowd, follow you from cloud to cloud"

It hardly seems like five years have passed since we started passing out
flyers in the parking lots on Spring Tour '91. "Blank tapes at Grateful
Prices" remember that! This month, Terrapin Tapes is celebrating our 5th
year in business. We've grown a lot, learned even more, and made a bunch of
friends during this most unusual trip.

Terrapin's growth and expansion has been made possible because of your
incredibly kind support and encouragement. We've spent the last 2 weeks
moving Terrapin Tapes out of my home and into a "real" office nestled in the
hills of Brookfield, CT. (about 10 minutes from Danbury) Our phone number
is still the same.

We'd like to thank everyone for your commitment to Terrapin over the years
by lowering our prices on the following Maxell tapes. These prices are good
through May 15.

XLII-90..........$1.45
XLII-100.......$1.85
XLIIS-90.......$1.90
XLIIS-100....$2.20

Shipping is still free if you order 50 tapes!

Many of you have been considering making the leap into the world of DAT.
We're selling a lot of DAT decks to first-time DAT tapers and we'd like to
extend our technical knowledge to those of you exploring your digital
options. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 677-8650.

After many requests from our west coast brothers and sisters, we're gonna be
open later. Our new ordering hours are Monday through Friday 9am to 8pm and
Saturday 10am to 5pm EST. Hope this is helpful to all.

Please help us to get the word around by posting this message wherever
appropriate. Letting non net-head friends in on this limited-time offer
would be most kind as well.

If you're ever in the Danbury, CT area come on
by and check out our new place.

Incredibly grateful,
