45.0. "The new New NEW *NEW* who/what and where are YOU note!" by LEDS::MRNGDU::YETTO (child of countless dreams) Wed Jan 09 1991 17:05

This file, which is a carryover from GRATEFUL_OLD which is a carryover from
GRATEFUL_V2 (which is probably a carryover from GRATEFUL_V1 right?) is full of
all sorts of wonderful people!! Everybody, whether we know you or not, please
take some time and write a bit about yourself in this note. Tell us whatever
you want ... some examples ; your name, hobbies, why you are here in this file,
do you belong to the Brussel Sprouts of America fan club with Jim, do you know
Ace personally, what feelings do you get from the Grateful Dead, where do you
work and what do you do there (besides note in GRATEFUL), and any other
interesting little tidbits you may care to share. Keep it clean please!

The keyword WHO_ARE_YOU has been added to this note.

OK, I'll start.....

    Hi, I'm Mary-Jo !

I have been "lerking" around this note for about a year or so
and decided it was time to say hello to all the grate people!

I have been a DEC employee for just under 4 years, currently
working at IND as a Cust Svc Rep on 3rd shift while pursuing
a BA at the University of Lowell.

I got on the bus in 1986 and plan on staying on forever!
I have been to about 6 shows and look forward to many many
    more!

I love this notesfile (and on 3rd shift have plenty of time
to read!) From what I have seen the people are super and I
hope to meet someone you one day!

    Hello to all!!!

Hi Mary Jo, and Lisa why no mention of David?? ;-) Yes you seem like

Feels odd to introduce yourself to those you have communicated with

Well, I'm from Marlboro. There are a few others in this file from that
illustrious town (the mayor calls it a *city*!).

Introduce yourself! We don't bite!

Come down to the Hitchin' Post Wednesday night to see the Candles! It's right
in town, and TreeMan may be there too (he's not from Marlboro, but he can come
anyway :-) )

Whelp, I thought I had better put a blurb about my self in the all new
and improved file. My name is Jerry Vauk. I am a lowly coop from the
University of Illinois. Go ILLINI - Save the Chief! I am on my third
and final :-( coop session. I work in Hudson and I write diagnostics
for the EVAX aka ALPHA project. But let's not talk shop. This coop
session I will be here until Aug 2 (my b-day) and then it is back to
the grind of school. I am living in Windsor Ridge in Westboro this
coop term. I like it a lot - we have a nice place there. I am living
with another coop, Jim Piket who is also from the corn state.

This year I am 21 so I am looking forward to going out and doing what I
wasn't supposed to do last year. I look forward to seeing Slipknot.
My first Dead show was in '85 at Alpine Valley. I used to see the boys
there every summer - it was grate. I would spend the week up there and
enjoy the outdoor afternoon shows - but Alpine has added its name to
    the list of lost venues.

As far as hobbies I of course love to collect tapes and I used to play
hockey. I say used to because I got an injury my senior year. I
dislocated my shoulder - yuck. I went to check this guy and well I
wanted him to really know that I was there so I was going kinda fast
and as ususal out of control. He saw me and slowed down just enough so
the force the hit was against the boards. My shoulder bone sliped out
and into my rib cage. I then had surgery on it later after it kept
slippin' out. I now have a metal screw in it but miraciously it feels
the same as my other shoulder.

It is good to be back - I shure missed the file. Grateful is not only
a great source of information but friendship as well.

    Happy Cheese-
    Jerry Vauk

Well, dudes and 'dettes, I'm movin' on. I'm taking a new job in
Pittsburgh (don't tell me that town ain't got no heart!) and outside of
DEC. I'll still be over on rec.music.gdead, I guess, but I wanted to
thank those of you whom I've read, replied to, and even MET (gosh!) for
being well-connected 'heads! 1991 holds all sorts of promise for me,
you, and the world (reGARDless of appearances) and will include my 10th
anniversary of getting on the bus (too bad no Pittsburgh show in May!).
I'll be on the Internet at travis@transarc.com -- send mail if you want
to link up with me at Pittsburgh, Maryland, Ohio shows (Hampton is in
range too! Have Deadmobile, will travel)... on the road, look for a

Now that's I'm at a new location, I might as well put something in about
myself.

I started at DEC as a co-op around this time in 1987, and was such until being
hired permanently in August, 1989. I got into the Dead as a result of finding
this notes file (now you all have something to be proud of! :-) ). From my
first day at DEC until this past Monday, I was a Software Engineer in Low End
Diagnostic Engineering (MLO 21, although, for the past 1.5 years, I was loaned
out to a group in Hudson, which, incidentally, was the cause of what I am about
to explain).

A few days before Thanksgiving last year (great timing), I was notified that I
was on transition. I had no intention of leaving the company, so I immediately
started looking for a job. I saw my situation as a great opportunity to find a
job more suited to my desires, and, luckily, I landed a job in Low End Networks
and Communications (LeNAC) as a Hardware Engineer. I am now back in the Mill
(MLO 3-5, pole 28A is actually *in* my cube!). I think I am safe from the
layoffs since I just got a job in a group that had a requisition for an
opening, so supposedly I am needed here.

One of the reasons why I love to work here is this file. If it wasn't for the
Grateful Dead, I wouldn't be in this file, and if it wasn't for this file, I
wouldn't be into the Dead! Figure that one out..

I guess this is our own little microcosmic, cyberkinetic, symbiotic fun
machine!

Dave has created a bunch of notesfiles, Adam... Dejavu and Grateful

Moderators: With the possible exception of the name "Pillar" (which is
a dead project), none of the information in this note is propriatary.
All projects discussed are announced, and all information about
cancelled projects has appeared in trade publications.

I'm John Hamby. I joined DEC in May 86, and found my way into
Grateful.note shortly thereafter. I was an irregular contributor to
Grateful until the middle of 1988, when the Prism program was
cancelled. Those of you who were not at DECwest at the time probably
can't understand what that meant to those of us who were working on it.

The project I was working on was a compiler for a new systems
programming language called Pillar that was to be used to implement the
Prism operating systems. The Pillar project survived Prism by a few
    months.

All of the senior talent in the Pillar team left Digital. I decided
that DEC wasn't going to get rid of me without a fight, so I decided to
spend all of my work time on my next project. Regrettably, this meant
deleting Grateful from my notebook. The company needed an ANSI C
compiler, so what was left of our team regrouped and set to work. As
nobody qualified for the job was left, I appointed myself compiler
architect and wrote most of the front end. This compiler has been
announced (as DEC C) and is available on RISC/ULTRIX. When a different
engineering team completes the VAX port it will be available on VAX/VMS
    and VAX/ULTRIX.

I'm presently implementing another compiler. It's not an announced
product yet, but it's the obvious follow-on to a C compiler.

All of the above is just to explain my extended absence, and to show
that not all of DECwest is floundering. (Though what Gordon said is
    largely true.)

I started collecting Dead tapes in 1977, had all the records by 1980,
and attended eleven concerts in 1981-1982. (I'm still hoping for a
decent-quality tape of 3/7/81.) At that point I felt like I had gotten
what I needed from Dead concerts, and felt fed up with some of the
all-too-well-known problems of the Dead scheme, so I gave up my seat on
the bus. I still love the Dead's music, and keep up with an occasional
infusion of tapes, but I'm not really a Deadhead anymore. (Change
that. I'm a Deadhead who doesn't go to concerts.)

Why am I back? Grateful is an interesting, fun, and supportive forum.
Deadheads don't think straight. It feels good to communicate with
people who have shared some of the life-shaping experiences the Dead
    can provide.

My musical interests continue to broaden--I'll listen to almost
anything in hopes of finding something in it. My favorite rock band
(The Dead don't count--to call their music "rock" is to exclude most of
what makes it interesting.) is probably The Saints--their albums "All
Fools Day" and "Prodigal Son" are worth a listen. I still haven't
gotten to the bottom of Thelonious Monk, and I can barely get my mind
around Ornette Coleman. (Check out Coleman's "In All Languages".) I
enjoy Cecil Taylor, but I'm still trying to figure his music out. Steve
Lacy is another favorite. In certain moods, I find the music of Charles
Ives entirely satisfying--the end of his second string quartet as
performed by the Julliard Quartet is transcendent.

Just in case anyone's wondering, I did eventually buy a CD player,
because too much of the music I wanted wasn't available on vinyl. I
got the cheapest one that wouldn't drive me out of the room (a NAD). I
resent the damn thing enormously, and feel no guilt about enjoying my
    records much more than CDs.

I worked on the Prism project, too! I'm happy to say I'm one of the
priviledged few who actually wrote code for that cpu! Even though it was only
run in simulation. Vectors are cool, especially for writing memory
diagnostics! I was a co-op then, and it wasn't cancelled til after I finished
that co-op, so I wasn't devastated or anything.

Good luck on future projects.

I can relate mon. I went through a product cancelation about 1 year ago.

Hello everybody! You may or may not know me. I have been very quiet
and very uninformed lately as far as notes conferences go. I don't
really think of myself as a "serious" Deadhead (maybe cuz I've never
done a whole tour) but I can't really deny it. I have been working
in Hudson, Massachusetts for almost 3 years as a CMOS chip designer.
You may have noticed my bright yellow CRX in
the parking lot (I guess I'm pretty eccentric) with the tiny "face"
on the back, the TOURS'R'US sticker on the driver side, and the smiley
sun on the passenger side. To make matters worse I play bass
guitar (5-string right now but I'm considering playing more 4-string
fretless) in a band that plays out occasionally. One third of our play
list is Grateful Dead or songs covered by them. Some day we might get
a keyboardist if we can find the right person. I live in Newton so
I tend to socialize around Boston rather than out here in the
boonies (Hudson, Marlborough, Maynard, etc). I've seen the Candles
more times than I probably should have (they all know my name and Helen
always expects to get a peck on the cheek). My hair is straight and
hangs about down to my nipples (keep it clean, eh Lisa ?) and if I
didn't have so many great partying friends I'd might be a lot
healthier. :-) Some people call me Skippy or Skip because of my often
energetic nature and my occasional similarity to a scratched record.

What more could anyone need to know ?

My name is Jeri and I saw my first show at Winterland around '79.
After a break of a couple of years, I got my husband to a show and we
were both hooked! We go to most of the Oakland, Shoreline and Cal Expo
shows, with a southern Cal trip now and then. Oh yeah, we made it to

We would like to start getting tapes of live shows, so I thought I

    extremely Grateful ;-) ;-)

This seems like a good place for this...

I just got off the phone with Howard Coffman. He asked me to say hello
to his friends in this file, to wish everyone well, and to let everyone
know that he is well.

Howard, as some of you may know, was laid off (oh, excuse me, I meant to
say "downsized") earlier this year. He is still without employment, although
he is hoping to land a job with an environmental company soon (he's got
on on the hook now, so to speak).

Out of work since April -- a sobering thought.

I have a friend who's been out of work since May 1990. Six and a half
years ago when I got laid off at Data General, it took me 16 months to
get back to work in my chosen profession (the interrim was spent
working as a landscaper, selling Christmas trees, and looking for a
    job).

I'm fortunate in that I still have a job, and hopefully will continue to do
so for a while..I have however sent resumes for a couple of jobs in other parts
of the country and never heard a response..I called the recruiters that posted
the jobs, said I was sending my resume, waited a few days and called to see
what's up...the response?? "Huh? I don't think I got your resume..when did you
send it?" I tell them when I sent it...their response? "Give me your dtn and
I'll call you back"....still waiting. I decided against relocating, but if
I were really looking for a job, I would hope for a little more support from
the recruiters...and I can't help but wonder what those folks about to lose
theirs are encountering from personnel..

This is my new, new, where the hell are you note: I've moved.

I'm still fumbling my way around ZKO - even got lost once. Now, where
is this place in Amherst that sells beer at grate prices? ;-)

Actually, the move really sucked. The closing on my house fell
through, and we're still battling it out with the lawyers, I got a
flu-from-hell just before Christmas that still keeps me up coughing and
I've constructed Mount Trashmore in my garage from all the crap I moved
from Tampa because I didn't have time to throw it out first. :-)

On the other hand, I'm REALLY excited to be up here. The product I'm
working on looks interesting (UCX), I really like New Hampshire (and so
do my kids), and I'm a short ride from the Whitehorse and my first
Slipknot show (coming up on the 18th)...

How can you get lost in ZKO? Each floor is a square and they all look
the same, and in 3 or 4 years you may have the pole numbering scheme
figured out. Even the building numbering scheme is a little weird (1
is between 2 and 3???), but at least floor numbers are the same from
    building to building.

The '74 Miami shows weren't my first (that was in Philly, '73) but they
were amoung the best. Yes, I'm still quite interested in them.
Someday I'll get a 2nd Nak and start reciprocating on these tape deals,
right now I only have one CR1A. I'm working on it, though.

The weird thing about ZKO is how they put floors UNDER the main
entrances. I mean, you walk into ZKO1-3, or into ZKO3-2, etc, and
then you walk DOWNSTAIRS to get to some parts of the facility. Also,
you can't see how HUGE the place is from the outside - you have to
wander around and get lost to do that! Fortunately I'm just warped
enough to get a kick out of this.

The most impressive item I've seen in my first week here is the
dedication to MLK on the second floor bridge between ZKO1 and ZKO3.
    Nice.

I'm definitely up for a lunch. Name the time and place, and I'll be
    there.

Yeah, one thing that impresses me about the ZKO1 and 2 entrances is how
well they've hidden the size of this place. If you like walks in the
woods (or skiing if we ever get snow) there's some nice paths out back.

What type of eats do you like Tim? Around here we have Chinese,
Indian, Thai, Mexican, Japanese, and plain old American.

welcome Tim! I'm in ZK1-3 (down by the back entrance to the cafe) if you're
in the neighborhood. Cheap beer in Amherst? I grew up (vs matured) in that
'burb and don't recall too many low ale prices. Certainly not Moulton's, the
store in the center of town. Perhaps the Homestead on Boston Post Rd. There's
always Shaws Supermaket in Milford, which is on 101A just before the White horse

Where in Amherst is Pavillion Rd, generally speaking?

It's a nice area - lots of rural properties with horses, etc. I have a

The place in Northampton is called Big Y. Amazing selection of just
about everything. Their prices are a little random (Spaten Optimator
was real cheap, but I can get Lindeman's Lambic cheaper at the Iron
Horse!), if you want to dream about being rich take a look at the back
wall in the wine section. Ever seen a $1000 bottle of wine?

Around here, the best grocery store for beer is Purity on Spit Brook
Road. On 101A, Market Basket has a better selection than Shaws or
Alexanders. If you want a huge selection, there's the North End
    Superette in Manchester, mentioned before.

The state stores have a few beers - some Corsendonk (Belgian trappist
ale), Thomas Hardy's ale (really a barley wine), some Frank Jones
special brew, and some German ale in a pottery bottle.

Which would still qualify one as a "Touchead". :-)

I've been hanging out in rec.music.gdead for a number of years, so
some of these names look familiar ;-) Just recently started work

45.106hey there hi there ho thereTECRUS::FROMMWed Mar 18 1992 19:1735
Well, I'm not exactly totally new here (first day of work was July 29, 1991),
but it's taking me a while to fully find my way around the notes files. Just
saw this particular topic, so I thought I'd announce myself and say hi.

I graduated from Cornell this past spring (BSEE), spent the summer travelling
around the country (started out the vacation with a show at Buckeye Lake in
Ohio), and now I'm living in Newton, MA, and working in Hudson on Low Cost
Alpha. I enjoy hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and playing piano, and some
things I haven't done lately but would like to spend more time with are
windsurfing, canoeing, ice hockey, and rock climbing.

My first show was also right around the release of In The Dark, but I'm not
positive if the show I went to (Dylan and the Dead at JFK stadium in Philly in
the summer of '87) was before or after the album. I got interested in the Dead
before the album came out, though, in the Spring of '87. Since then I've been
to 25 shows (I think - I haven't counted in a while). Of the shows I've seen,
my favorite venue was Buckeye Lake; my least favorite venue was the Meadowlands
(WAY too much security presence). I've also seen what may be the last event
ever at JFK (the stadium has been unused since the Dead show in July '89, and
Philly is thinking of tearing it down to build a new arena to convince the
Sixers and Flyers not to leave Philly for Camden, NJ). Kind of a shame. There
aren't too many 100,000 plus stadiums in this country (JFK is one of the sites
where Live Aid was), and I think they ought to fix it up and have it as one
of the World Cup soccer sites. I too have an entire unripped ticket from my
first show. My most interesting acquisition of a ticket was while moving at
about 25 mph on the New York Thruway on the way to a show at Silver Stadium
in Rochester in July '88. The car I bought the ticket from was in the left
lane, and our car was to his left, half on the shoulder and half on the grass.
Well, enough said.

To summarize,

HI!

Hi,

I seem to think I know a lot about a lot of things.
If you've seen what I've posted in GRATEFUL, it's
a lot of off the wall rambling confusion, with an
occasional spark of creativity and/or insight, and
a dash of questionable quasi-facts -- all of which
make the NEXT UNSEEN key very useful.

One day, in 1986, I was hired by Digital. I didn't
know much about the company, but I believed:

1) If an engineer or scientist likes their PDP, they
really need a VAX( and therefore they'll need
   bigger and better VAXes).

2) It's okay for me not to know how the company's
CEO's name is spelled. Is it O-l-s-e-n, or O-l-s-o-n?
I can always ask a VP, VPs can spell (silly me).

3) Digital has an internal network that links most of
the employees together. 90,000+ employees? I knew
some deadheads who were into nets. There must be
a few deadheads in the 90,000+ Notes? Hmmm?

It was worth a look. One out of three is better than none.

    Six hours after I started
working for DEC, I was somewhat astounded to find
KRYSTAL::GRATEFUL. I went through about six weeks
of read only anxiety. Then I began to reply...

...Occasionally with good fortune, I'm able to listen.
Better yet, my eyes may open, my tongue and lips might
stop flapping -- or my fingers might refrain from typing
-- and I get a sense of your feelings and thoughts.

To me, that's precious. I'm only beginning to realize
how easy it isn't for me to get off my own trip and
make an effort to understand where any of one of you may
be coming from. That said, I'll tell you something I know:

This notes file is a very fine thing. It's full of caring,
intelligent and fun thoughts and feelings from people full of
that stuff.

I sincerely appreciate the myriad of ways that this
notes-file has brought some sort of sanity to my
perspective on the world we live in. When leaders
spoke of the focus of evil in the modern world, the
discussion here turned to peace.... uh etc.

I've made some friends here. That, I'll cherish forever.

The Grateful Dead is a band beyond description; the
band is good, but if you want to know what it's all
about, listen to the fans.

When I think of Digital, I'll think of you!

I'll be an ex-Dechead soon.

    Peace,

    KenB

Hi, I am Matt Wagner. I have been read-only for some years through
several versions GRATEFUL. I work in St. Louis, MO(where the Dead don't
go no mo) as a field repair engineer or customer service engineer or
Digita Services or whatever they are calling us this week. I just had
    my eight year anniv.

I am married with three doggies and have a home in Belleville, IL. I am
nicknamed, and will probably sign my replies as, `Oso'(Spanish for
bear). My wife Ashley gave this to me when she saw me hang upside down
from a tree; thought I looked like a bear. So when I listen to The
Dead, I guess I become a Dancin' Oso.

I am basicly a home, car , wherever I can Dead listener. I have not had
the fortune(or the funds) to tour since the Alpine Valley show on
6/28/86. This is just tooooo long. I plan to get back into the tour
for some regional shows if possible. I LOVE The Dead and have
influenced my wife to get in the act. She would like to go to a show to
see what its all about. I need to get familiar with the mail order
system. I know my brother could help. He was my main influence for
becoming a Deadhead. I attempt to regularly tape the Grateful Dead
Hour so I have some live stuff to listen to. I would probably
eventually like to get tapes from other Heads.

We love to camp and to ride about the countryside on my motorcycle. It
is a 1985 BMW K100RS. I have it set up for touring and would love to go
to Colorado or NE sometime to see a few shows. I think Telluride or Red
    Rocks would be a blast.

I could bore you longer but who needs it.

    Bye 4 now,

	Yep, that's the one.

"I begged and I pleaded, I asked him to stay,
And I managed to keep him inside for a day.
But the bears all barged in, and they took him away!
Now I can't understand it, he's dancing with pandas,
And the bears all demand at least one waltz a day!"

I don't think I'm familiar with that song...

Is it a dead tune? If not, who's tune is it? Is "Waltzing With Bears" the
name of the song?

Ignorant minds want to know...

Yes, the name of the song is "Waltzing with Bears". No, it wasn't
featured in "Hotel New Hampshire" (great movie, though). No, it's not a Dead
tune. It's been done by at least a couple of people, none of whom I can
remember at the moment. WEVO used to play it quite a bit when they had a folk
show.

    			I'M BACK!!!!

I started Monday at PCI Documentation in LJO1 after a year and a half
of being responsible for IRS Compliance for a bank -- yuck. I haven't
had much of a chance to catch up on my reading, as that's not why I'm
here. I probably won't get much of a chance to write, but I'm sure
I'll be popping in every now and then.

I've missed Grateful sooooo much. It's always here when I need some
cheering up. I can't believe that some of the people I met over the
file 5 years ago may not even be working for DEC anymore, but then, my
mom worked for them for 18 years. She took the package in May 1990.

I'm currently living in Acton at Nagog Woods, but am planning on moving
to Grand Junction, Colorado after Christmas. No kids, no husband, no
boyfriend, no pets, not a thing but me, my friends and my family . . .
thank goodness!! (I almost got married 2 years ago -- I'm still
breathing a sigh of relief that I called it off.)

No shows since '88. Worcester really, really bummed me out. I still
love the Dead though, probably always will.

Hi, I'm Jeff and I'm new to DEC from Babson college. Spent a month off
travelling after school the highlight of which was an awesome
masterpiece in buffalo with the Bobby we used to know and love. I've

Glad to see a dead culture at Digital, I was afraid it might be too

I've gotta first say that you are VERY fortunate to be coming into DEC
during times like these, even more fortunate than I was (and Scott
Wentzell too who came in at the same time during the summer of 1989).

Also, on your behalf, keep the positive mental attitude and spread it
amongst your co-workers... These are challenging times indeed, and
many people are coping with high levels of stress as a result. New
blood and new vigor is what we need to get through it all.

Enough of that though, I'm glad you're here. I'm glad you found
GRATEFUL so fast, and I welcome you to a very special place to come to
share info, meet new folks, join in on social events (see the camping

Welcome Rob and Jeff! Hmmm, Rob, you should really consider MSG shows.
Ithaca isn't all that far from NYC, and you should be able to find
rides easily enough. I saw my 2nd Dead show when I decided to hitch
from Albany to Buffalo during a long weekend. Of course, back then
you could show up and buy a ticket at the door for 10 or 15 bucks.
Sigh.... (actually ended up in Ithaca the day after the show,
    but that's another story ;-)

Have someone set you up with a place to crash
Crash in your car for a few hours and then drive back

5 hours is really no big deal. After the first 2 1/2 , it doesn't

Hey Rob,

Where there's a will, there's a way!

Here's how I arranged one of the deadshows I went to in college - tickets went
on sale, this one friend and I each got an extra tickets, it was real easy to
find people who wanted to go, all four of us pitched in on gas and a tickets
for the guy with the car. Off we went to the show (Albany to Rochester - I
think that was a four to five hour drive too)... Get an extra ticket, then if
you ask around, you won't find any trouble getting someone to go or finding a
ride to the shows... Remember - We Are Everywhere!

Get the tix and trust that things will work - they will...

always advertise in the college newspaper that I need a ride. I guess
it's worth a shot. Probably should talk to my parents about it first,

    Rob,
If you live in the Nashua area there are several places where you can
get Dead shirt: There's a T shirt shop at the Nashua Mall, as you come
into the mall entrance nearest Bradlees that has some Dead shirts. The
Latin Connection, a cart at the Pheasant Lane Mall has some Dead
shirts. Also, Headlines on Main St in Nashua has lots of Dead stuff as
    well as T shirts.

Rob,

The other option you can check out (we are ta;lking about MSG right?)
is the train. Very easy to get from Grand Central (even easier from
Penn! :-) don't know which you'd come in on) to Madison Square Garden,
and you'll have a blast on the train!! You may even find your shirt there....

Lisa

Yup, we're talkin' about MSG, Lisa. I suppose I could take the train.
But if I took one in, could I take one OUT? :) Hmmm...yeah, I'm sure I
could. But maybe bus would be easier. I'm sure they run one to MSG.
And there's a greyhound station a little ways away from Ithaca College.
So I might think of that option. I don't know where all the train
stations are, though! I'd have to go looking for one... Hmmm...

Thanks everyone for ALL the help!

selection of shirts. Buried Treasures is one, I think there's another
    but don't remember the name.

Headlines is probably the best of the 3 places in Nashua.

Occasionally at the flea market on 122 in Hollis there's been some
shirt dealers. Some sell homemade stuff, others have the commercial
stuff you could find at shows.

Or - just wait till the BG shows! Maybe the one you have now won't
    shrink until then.

Shaky Jake's in Worcester has a grate selection of Dead-type shirts.
There's one I saw there last time I was in the store that I thought was

of town when Mail Order started for the MSG shows...PLUS I'll be on my
way to college when Ticket Master sells. So...unless someone at Ithaca

Such poor manners I have!!!

Ya' know, I just realized I never introduced myself in here...

Isn't that just like me...just barge right in, uninvited (well, ok, so I was
welcome the whole time), acting like a complete Dave, stating my opinions,
making puns, meeting people from the file. Sheesh, am I rude...

Well, if y'all will forgive me, I'll continue with the social amenities...

Who: Dave Weiss
What: Hmmm. Suppose that depends on your prespective :-)
But DEC pays me to be a software engineer.
Why: Because that's what I was edumacated for...
Where: Nashua, NH. I both live and work in Nashua (ZKO).
How: Well, just under 25 years ago, this stork dropped a hairy package on
my parents doorstep in Fair Lawn, NJ. Then after several years of that,
that fuzzy dude ended up at CMU in Pittsburgh PA. 4 years later,
in a fit of insanity, some DECcie with a tie made me an offer, and I
      took it.

Hobbies: Life. I love it. There's just sooooooooo much fun to be had out
there! My cats, skiing, biking, karate, rollerblading, eating,
drinking, cooking, trying to tread as lightly as possible upon the
Earth, meeting new people, sharing times with old friends,
and just about anything new that seems like fun to me. And of course,
MUSIC! I'm not a musician, but music plays such an important role in
my life! I've got music on whenever there's a device available to
play it. I dunno, there's just something magical that happens inside
of me when I hear certain songs...

I've gotta admit, I don't consider The Grateful Dead my favorite band
(don't really have one), but I do consider them The World's Greatest
	Dance Band!

I'm really glad that I'm involved in this notes file! I've met some great
people (both face to face and electronically) and I can't wait to meet even more
(that's a hint you RON's... :-) and create more memories with the ones I already
know!

Great to meet you again, my friends!!!!

Following Dave's example I'll introduce myself tool I've been writing
for about a year, but I started reading this note when I worked in CSS
at NUO in the early 80's.

I started at DEC in 1980. I've been in Salem since Feb. '87. I'm an
    Environmental Health and Safety Specialist.

I feel as if I know you all. I'm also realising that although I've
written replies you can't know me very well since I hadn't told you
much about me. I have two grown sons (26 and 24 years old). My
younger son turned me on to the dead when he was about 14. IF I get to
Boston this will be my first show. I have several Dead CD's which I've
had for a while. But thanks to the generosity of this group I also
have a growing collection of tapes. Listening to the Dead is among my
favorite things, which also include my cat TED, walking, hiking,
reading (possibly my favorite) writing, watching movies and reading
    this note.
Now I feel that I'm really part of this group.

    Peace,

When I was in BXC, the site manager had really anal-retentive rules ... like
you couldn't put anything on the outside of your cube walls, you couldn't
have anything higher than the top of your cube walls (like a plant branch
hanging over the top of a wall was a no-no) ....

I think the place is kinda spooky. All straight lines and 90 degree
angles, very few colors ... had almost a barracks feel. I was glad to get

Have fun. :^)

MJ,

Grate - see you at SOS. I really wasn't trying to recruit
you specifically for help in the move - I just couldn't
resist the urge to put in just one more plug for help from
the general population. ;-)

Over the past 9 months since I moved to New England, I've
had the chance to meet a lot of the New England DECheads,
and I really enjoy meeting each new person enormously.
It's been a consistently uplifting experience for me.

Just talked to Rich Butze...he's now a VP of Operations at a publishing house
in Vermont! (though he couldn't tell me what a VP does all day)..anyway, he
said to say hello to everybody....HELLO EVERYBODY..and hopes we're all doing
well, which of course I couldn't answer for all of us, but I assured him that
many, if not most of us, are indeed doing well.

We're gonna get together here in the next couple weeks to do some pickin' and

    Hello everyone....

Some of you may remember me from the past couple of years. My name
is Mike Bourdess, and I'm a co-op student spending my third term with
the company. I used to be at FXO, but since that site no longer
    exists, I'm at MRO-1.

For those of you who don't know me, I'm a very outdoorsy-type
person. I enjoy camping and really like the mountain biking in this
part of the country. I go to school in Ohio, so try to make the best
of being so near the ocean and the mountains of Vermont and NH.\

Well, I guess that's it, just wanted to say "hello" and "I'm back" to
    everyone.

I don't want to be a bump on a log, and it looks like the replies to
this entry have sorta slowed down so here it goes:

I was first introduced to Grateful Notes as a temporary in Dascomb Rd.
about five years ago. (I also had the extreme pleasure of being
introduced to mail order by Jim Henderson who I thank for making life
much easier for me) After 8 months there I returned to school at the
University of New Hampshire and graduated in May of 1992. I recently
starte another temp. assignment in Salem that should carry me through
until I go back to grad school, so someday I can realize my hopes and
aspiritions of being a secondary level teacher. My last shows were in
the Boston Gaden, hopefully my sacrifice to the mail order god will pay
off in the form of Nassau tickets for the Spring shows. Anyways, since
I left DEC i have been looking forward to getting re-acquainted with
this file. The noters here truly embody what this band is all
about..Being kind to your fellow human and sharing the joy of their
    music.

Hey folks, just thought I'd say hi and introduce myself. My name is
Scott and working in the Field Test Group of Components and Peripherals
in MRO1. I will be a senior at Cornell in the fall where I'm majoring
in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering.

My musical tastes are very varied and I like a lot of alternative
stuff. I just got into the Dead last summer and hopefully will be
going to my first show August 4th at Giant Stadium, which I'm pretty
excited about. I recently got into Phish also, and I will be going to
my first Phish concert in July.

I find the easygoingness of the Dead scene to be a pleasant relief,
especially from all the pressures of Cornell. I'm amazed at some of
the stuff I read on these notes files when people say things like "This
notes file was my only joy at Digital" and "if it wasn't for this notes
    file, I don't know what I'd do".

I've heard that when the Dead played Cornell in '78 or so, it was a
great show. For some reason, I don't think they'll be back too soon.
    Bummer :(

if ya wanna go to 2 shows at venues that will probably be very laid back, i'd
suggest seeing the dead in highgate, vt (july 13), which has it's own planning
note in this file, and phish at sugarbush (july 16). i'm immensly looking
forward to both of those shows.

the infamous Cornell '77 show was in Barton Hall during Springfest weekend.
(i gather that Springfest used to be a bit of a more organized weekend
festival as opposed to the simple day of drunkenness that it has evolved
into). they also played there in '80 and '81, i believe. i got a kick out
of taking final exams in a room where a dead show happened.

yes, there are still tickets left, but i wouldn't let it go until the last
minute. call 800-53-SUGAR to charge by phone at the mountain and bypass
ticketbastards!

the ticket office referred me to two campgrounds. one isn't really a
campground - it's just a big field next to a texaco station a little bit from
the entrance to the sugarbush access road. i guess it could be kind of fun
staying there, but not exactly ideal, and they don't take reservations.

the only real campground that they referred me to is 30 minutes away. i'd
like to find something closer. i'm trying to get ahold of my friend in
burlington for suggestions. anyone got any?

or i might just bag the campground idea. jc's staying in some kind of inn or
b&b, i believe.

45.325mail order - what's the deal?HANNAH::SPIELMANThu Jun 09 1994 15:0917
Hey folks, I've got a question. I read through the mail order topic,
but I still didn't find it. What's the deal with mail order? If I'm
trying to get tickets for the August 4th show at Giant Stadium, should
I try mail order or take my chances on the phone when they go on sale
    on June 25?

I'm excited about my first show. If I get tickets to both, I will be
going to the Dead on Thu. and then Lollapalooza the next day. Quite a
change. How long are they're shows usually? Rich, I've heard Phish
plays for like 4 hrs.? (sorry for saying anything about Phish on
here, since I know that a lot of people would rather nothing about
Phish showed up on dead related conferences.)

The other day I was in the car with my dad who is 53. Ripple came on
WZLX and I asked him if he knew who it was. He had no idea and I told
him and he said "I thought the Grateful Dead was a heavy metal band."
I've heard this several times. Why do so many people think that?

>What's the deal with mail order?

ya gotta plan a bit in advance for mail order. too late for this summer tour.
and there's no mail order for highgate.

not trying to burst your bubble or anything, but a lot of people (myself
included) are of the opinion that the meadowlands is one of the worst places
to see a dead show. i went to brendan byrne for 3 shows in '89 and vowed that
i'd never return. i haven't. again, i strongly suggest highgate...

>Rich, I've heard Phish
> plays for like 4 hrs.?

well, that would be a little unusual. (although amy's farm did go from about
3 until 8:30). typically expect 2 90 minute sets with a 30 minute break.
although the first sets have been getting quite a bit shorter, so 60-70 minutes
wouldn't be all that unusual. of course, there are also sometimes second sets
that run more than 100 minutes. it's hard to say. and sugarbush is the last
show of the tour. so they might be tired and not do anything special, or they
might make it really special having returned to their home state. who knows?

> (sorry for saying anything about Phish on
> here, since I know that a lot of people would rather nothing about
> Phish showed up on dead related conferences.)

well, since there isn't (yet) a phish conference here, i guess it's
acceptable (and usually occurs in note 237). in fact, i'd say about 90% of
this notes file has usually nothing to do with the dead!

    Hey, Scott,

Welcome to Grateful and DEC. (I'll be leaving shortly myself.)

A few notes ago, you asked why people think the Dead are a heavy metal
band. First of all, these must be people who never heard the Dead.
While the Dead are (and have been) many things, I wouldn't say that
"heavy metal" is one of them. I think it has to do with the image
thing. First of all, the name "Grateful Dead" probably conjures up
some heavy metal-type images. And the skull/skeleton motif causes
some image problems for the uninitiated also.

    But we know better.

Hi, Scott, Rich- I wasn't around for '77, but my first Dead show was at
Barton Hall in I think late '79; though it may have been spring semester
'80, the calendar memory is pretty hazy from those years. You say you got
a kick out of taking finals where the Dead had played? I got a kick out
of seeing the Dead in the same place I wore an AFROTC uniform and

Tim,

Might as well get this out of the way quick...

Please set your right margin to 80 columns or less! Those of us without fancy
fonts can't see the end of your lines (even though I can't read German :-)).
Are you using a VT100 (with 84 column lines)? :-) :-)

FYI - DEC Notes V2.4 (and 2.5 I assume) does word wrapping at the window
border correctly. These lines were typed without any RETURNs entered and they
have wrapped ok.

What? You guy's can't stretch things on the fly? ;-) Of course now
I've stretched my window to the right and I'm not sure where 80 cols
is now, so forgive me if I drift off a bit. I'll try and stay away from
the border ;-) (cepting for Highgate!)

Yeah, I sort of dropped out of rmgd when I got here. Too much bandwidth
at the time, too little content, and too many flames. And Grateful
is pretty cool. I'll occassionaly drop in to lurk, but work and some
other newsgroups take up enough of my time ;-) I did get on the
DeadHeads mailing list where I'd see setlists and ticket announcements
and the like, but I haven't even gotten anything from that in a long while.
Don't worry about the connector. I've gotten another one long since.
Now I've just got to get my Nak fixed so I can dub again!! (And don't
be telling me to go DAT! That's pretty far down on the wish list at the
moment. Other toys would have to come first ;-)

Does Heidi have any plans for Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter? I seem to remember
seeing either a post by her, or her name linked with some conference about
that shortly after they first figured out it would do the collision thing.
(Sci.astro is another lurking area for me, though I must admit, my most
frequented group is rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon-5 these days ;-)

Later,

Hi Mike, We all see this note becasause we're all "next unseen" readers.

Give it a try:

Notes> set seen

Wait five minutes then hit KP , and you'll see the next note.

The KP Enter key will scroll you through all the replies in a note then go
to Next Unseen after the last note. KP , will skip the remaining replies in
a given topic.

You can also do things like:

Notes set seen/before=yesterday, and then start next unseening through all
the newest entries in the conference...

Enjoy!

So, I guess I should take the big plunge, come out the closet, give
up my life as a voyeur and introduce myself to this conference...
especially since I'm not a virgin (Grateful Dead virgin, that is) anymore.

I'm Kathy Gallup, better known as Kath or Kat in notes because I'm
too lazy to type my full name. I love the music scene, and have been
known to spend multiple days in a row out at shows -- but mainly in
dark, dingy clubs watching raw, real, and rough alternative acts. Last
night was my first time at a large concert in over two years -- yes,
I took the plunge and did a Dead show.

When I popped into this conference last week (it comes well-recommended,
I might add, as a fun place to note) I saw quite a few familiar names
that I've known from Digital in the past 8 years that I've been here.
Great to bump into you all again.

As for me, I can be found most days in MRO1, where I work in the
Knowledge-Based Solutions Group as a Senior Software Engineer -- mainly
working in wireless (cellular) fraud (no, not committing fraud, detecting
    it!) ;-)

45.396Guess I'd best introduce myselfCUPMK::VALLONETue Oct 04 1994 17:4228
Hey...

I just posted a note, so I figure I'd better "officially" introduce
myself. I'm mostly a read-only kind of guy, but I've communicated with
a few of my fellow DECheads... getting DEChead T-shirts (I have V2 and V3),
and following up on other topics.

I've been at DEC just over five years... Somedays it seems longer, some
days not. I work in MKO as a writer/documentation and publications
consultant... My group's charter is to work with DEC customers, but
lately that work has been gettin' scarcer and scarcer.

I gravitate to this conference mostly because it is a conference where
I can feel like I fit in...

I think I'm more into Reggae than I am into the Dead, but I guess I
qualify because I have been to a couple of shows, and I have a small
collection of tapes (non-commercial), and in my earlier years I used
to go on many, many "trips."

The thing I like most about GRATEFUL is reading (and now writing) about
things and not feeling likeI have to apologize, explain, or downplay my
lifestyle, interests, and past experiences. It really has been a long,
strange trip... But, boy-howdy, it sure has been fun.

Anyhow, perhaps you'll "see" me in here more often.

--Tom (who usually signs only --t or sometimes t-bone)
45.397oh, THAT busRICKS::CALCAGNIThere's no money to be made above the 5th fretTue Oct 04 1994 18:0323
Me too, ah rekon. Rick Calcagni here, yet another HLO'er! I'm sorta new
to this Dead stuff, so bear with me. It all started over the summer; I
met a new friend who got me listening and it's been slowly building to my
first show last Wednesday (and #2 last night). The rest, as they say, is
history. For some reason, I've missed the bus until now. What was I
thinking!? My only excuse is that while I've "heard" the Dead for
years (make that decades), I never really "listened" to the Dead before.
Right now they're taking up about 95% of my ear time.

I play bass in the Alternate Quartet (our CD "Rainforest Rhumboogie" is
available at finer music emporiums everywhere :-) and while we're not
really like the Dead, some of our stuff wouldn't sound too out of place
during Space. Plus I think we share a common attitude about how the
music should be organic and flow. And of course, I get zoned on Phil!

Many, many thanks for this notesfile. It's been a grate source for me
digging through old notes, picking up recommondations on recordings,
bits of trivia, etc. The mailorder info was invaluable, and more
than anything helped to get me off my duff and out to my first show.
Looking forward to reading from (and maybe even meeting) more of you.

Zk1 2 or 3?

Let's see: PeterT ZK3-2,
Jeff Strobel, Bob Hapgood ZK3-3
Debess ZK3-4
Bruce Laru ZK3-4??

From what Jollimore was saying the other day, he's one of those
Merrimack people who are making us change our phone numbers
and I think he said he'll be in ZK3-2.

And Carol Roberts, ZK1 in the library,
and Cathy Sloan, ZK1 or 2? I think 1 but that's a guess...

Am I forgetting any? Probably....
