| Hi,
I do not have the exact knowledge you are seeking but I recently saw an
orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ferrari, at the UMASS Med. Sports Medicine Clinic.
I found out later that he is well known as an incredibly good diagnostician,
in fact what was said to me was that seeing him was better than having an MRI.
I can vouch for the diagnostic skills. In under 2 minutes he had found the
the exact problem I was having in my knee. He put his finger on the spot,
on the inside of the knee, twisted my foot and told me that I had a piece
of cartilage that moved when it should not. I signed up for arthroscopic (sp?)
surgery and will do some additional background checking. So far he has
given me confidence in his capabilities. Is anyone else familiar with
Dr. Ferrari?
I explained that I wanted to run and he was very clear on the need to not run
till after the operation and the exact nature of the rehabilitation. He
said that I would be able to start back running after around 6 weeks or so after
the operation. He also said that I could continue to ride my bicycles both
before and after the first week following the operation due to the nature of
the problem.
Perhaps UMASS Med. is too far for you anyway. Hopefully, others will have more
directly applicable experience for you from closer to your area.
Good luck! Let us know how it works out for you!

| Bob,
Did you have the operation? How is it turning out?
I had my knee surgery about 6 weeks ago. I have been doing my PT with
ankle weights and that appears to be coming along. When I me with the
Dr. a week after the operation he indicated then that I should not
expect to run till after another 8 weeks and after I had achieved
certain levels on the PT. He also said that I should start out
gradually, i.e. 1 mile at first, etc.
I have started biking a little and yesterday was my first day commuting
to work (20 mi each way). So far the recovery appears to be going
along according to schedule. I am getting impatient to be out there
running and hiking again.
So, I would recommend Dr. Ferrari for knees!
