Conference mvblab::sable

    Hi there,
    
    I've looked through this conference and searched my memory for
    recollections about this issue, but I wanted to ask for opinions.
    
    The original Sable had an embedded 8-bit SCSI controller embedded on
    the I/O module, and this was cabled to the internal CD-ROM and internal
    8-bit shelf via a 50-pin ribbon cable.  The shelf only had the 50-pin
    berg connectors on the back of it.  
    
    Then at some point the internal shelf was ECO'd to add support for
    16-bit, and with it the two 68-pin connectors were added to the shelf.
    
    I have a customer who has an older Sable but tells me it is the new
    style shelf.  But when he cables the internal ribbon cable from the
    built-in SCSI to the shelf via the 50-pin berg connector, he cannot see
    wide drives installed in the shelf.  Am I going crazy here, I thought
    this was the default configuration from the factory? Or is there a new
    cable or something like that required?

    Does this customer have the 16 bit terminator on the backplane. I don'
    have the part number but you can find it in this notes file.

    My guess is that it *is* the 16-bit version, since the system has a
    16-bit shelf.  However, I will ask the customer to find out if there
    are no other more obvious suggestions.  I just wonder how they could
    have a 16-bit shelf but have the 8-bit terminator in it, is there a
    likely scenario that would see such a combination?

    He could have an "old" narrow drive in there which grounded the upper
    bits..The revision of the flexprint inside the Storageworks drive
    box needs to be rev C or later.
    
    The only drives I knew of that we had seen the older flex in were
    RZ25L,RZ26, and very early RZ28s..
