    Two from US prehistory:

There is something exhilerating in the sound of bullets whizzing
    	by.

G Washington, after his first combat action, vs French &
    		Indians.

He has not heard very many of them.

King George, on hearing his (then) subject's comment.

(I may not have them quite right... & don't ask WHICH King George...)

    	regards

525.28Who said?POWDML::HAMILTON_KMon Mar 10 1997 14:379
Can anyone give the proper wording and name of person who said:

    "I didn't complain when they came for ... because I wasn't

When they came for me there was no one left to complain"

    Thanks,
    Karen

I am 99% sure it was a Lutheran pastor in Germany, under Hitler.

Apologize for not knowing the name. Moller, or Niemoller, or close
    to that. Roughly:

When they came for the Jews, i did not complain, because I was not
    a Jew.

When they came for the Gypsies, i did not complain, because i was
    not a gypsy.

When the came for the Catholics, i did not complain because i was
    not a Catholic.

When they came for me, no one complained, because there was no one
    left.

    Thanks so much!

A friend had heard this on TV last week and couldn't remember the name.
You gave me the name, and the Net filled in some of the blanks.

He was Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1892-1984, and wrote this in 1945.

"First they came for the Communists, but I didn't speak up, because I
    wasn't a Communist.
Then the came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a
    Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was
    a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by then there was no one left to speak up
    for me."

    Thanks again.
