780.0. "Lowest software support for RWZ53" by GEM::SHERGOLD (A FOOL'S living PARADISE) Wed Feb 12 1997 12:43

Due to a lack of supplies of the RWZ52 our logistics is supplying the
RWZ53 as a spare. This however is being done without any consultaion
with the Support Centre and we are reaping the consequences. Can
someone confirm the minimum support level of UNIX, VMS, NT and OSDS on
both UNIX and VMS. My belief is VMS must be at least V6.2-1H3, UNIX
must be V3.2C, NT must be V4.0 and OSDS 3.4.

The issue to us is that we should not be doing this upgrade if it means
a large inconvenience to the customer in forcing him to upgrade his
software when he doesn't want to. If we can find out ahead of time what
the software is we can then find out if upgrading would be difficult
and therefore insist on the local branch finding an RWZ52.

    Cheers
    	Keith Shergold

Very close on the ones I know about.

VMS requires V6.2 and OSDS/OSMS V3.4 (both VAX and Alpha).
    UNIX requires V3.2C and OSDS/OSMS V1.5.

I don't currently have any information on support of the RWZ53
    for NT.

780.2LEFTY::CWILLIAMSCD or not CD, that's the questionWed Feb 12 1997 13:3521
The RWZ53 is -not- an appropriate replacement for an RWZ52.

THe '52 can read -and- write the single density media, while the '53
    can only read it.

The '52 is a full high 5.25" drive, the '53 is a half high 5.25, and
will not fit properly in many '52 slots.

You cannot mix 52's and 53's in a jukebox, so the 53 cannot be used as
a spare there. Also, ucode upgrades are needed in older JB's to handle
the new drive, which are only available via yet-to-be-announced upgrade
    kits ($$).

Then there is the whole SW support issue mentioned above.

If there is a supply issue, this needs to be dealt with by solving the
supply issue, not using RWZ53's in place of RWZ52's. Engineering
    cannot support this replacement....

Cheers, guys you have settled most of the questions and the answers do
not help MCS to much. I guess they need to get heavy with logistics.

One more question in this area; can the 29-31453-01 (JUKEBOX spare) be
installed into an RWZ52 tabletop box to repair the basic optical unit if
it is just this that is failing or do we definitely have to supply an
RWZ52-DA? If this is possible then it may help to eleviate the larger
    problem.

Well, the JB spare is missing the front panel... but it would "work".

Note that this is not supported, though... The -DA is the FRU, and the
warranties are void if the drive is swapped out seperately, last I
    looked.

I'm chasing this issue (Logistics stating that an RWZ52-DA is
replaced by an RWZ53-DA) with Corporate GSO planners.
