807.0. "RW531 says "I NEED CODE" " by STP01::STPKPK::stp01::kepke () Thu Mar 13 1997 07:36

	Hi,

An RW531-ZC on the first power-on said "I LOAD FILE". After about
one hour time another message appeared: "I NEED CODE". This message
appeared any time now after powering-on (sometimes "NEED CODE I"). The box
doesn't react on any control button. There are no control lights (green or
yellow).

On the console (AS4100):

>>>sh dev
.....
jkb600.6.0.3.1 JKb600 HP DOWNLOAD 5.05

I guess the Half-capacity Autochanger controller PCA is faulty. In
accordance with Service Manual for RW531 DEC p/n is 29-32788-01 and HP p/n
should be 5063-2727. On the board I could see the following number only:
C1150-67961.

	My questions:

1. "I NEED CODE" - does it mean that Autochang. controller PCA is faulty?

2. Is p/n 29-32788-01 the right p/n for ordering?

	Many thanks in advance.

	Michael Kepke

    Please IPMT this issue.
Although probably not an engineering issue, we (support personnel)
are "wrestling" Corporate Logistics, trying to convince them of this
    exact issue with MANY boards.
Optical Engineering, upon recieving the IPMT, would probably move it
to the appropriate group for resolution and followup.

The DIGITAL part number is correct.

In the UK and Europe, we have had many occasions where logistics at
the local level have attempted to satisfy requests for parts not in
(their) stock by purchasing what they think are equivalent parts from
    local HP sources.

    	These parts are **NOT** equivalent.

The DIGITAL RWxxx series of jukeboxes are HP devices with DIGITAL
re-engineered code installed on the A/C controller PCA.

This code is installed by HP in the US, and shipped only to a
limited number of DIGITAL logistics distribution points throughout the
    world.

Local logistics departments **MUST** order or replenish their stock
from these sources in order to ensure that the right (or any) code is
    present on the modules.

It is possible to download code to the jukebox, but this capability
is not currently available in DIGITAL's MCS field operation.

    	How did this situation arise?

Was the jukebox shipped in this state?

Was the A/C controller module a replacement for a fault condition?

Did the situation arise as the result of "error" when manipulating
    front-panel functions? (Clear RAM?)

> Was the jukebox shipped in this state?

It was a completely new box. It's IDs are: RW531-ZC A01,
MODEL C1153A, OPTION 728ABA, SERIAL 3431A00567, S5003451

> Was the A/C controller module a replacement for a fault condition?

The A/C controller module is "native" for the box. I took it out just
for inspecting. There are the following numbers on it: 612 5X800DW,
C 1150-67961, 847422565. There were a lot of fingers' prints on the bottom
layer of the board , I didn't see such a dirty board in new boxes before.

> Did the situation arise as the result of "error" when manipulating

"I NEED CODE" appears on powering-on immediately. The box doesn't react
on any buttons. There were no others messages between the first message "I LOAD
FILE" (~ 1 hour) and then "I NEED CODE".

I have ordered a board from Nijmegen.

	Regards.

	Michael.

I never thought I'd say this, I'm usually chirping in with "IPMT this"!, but
do NOT IPMT this. This is not an Engineering issue, and we cannot fix this.
We have tried to influence and help the people who can, but they simply aren't
taking charge.

The correct person in MCS Logistics to contact concerning this is Dennis King.
STOWOA::KING_D. Please copy Luis Fernandez. (He is Donna's Manager.)
STOWOA::FERNANDEZ And the Optical Product Manager, Donna Reusch.
CSSE::REUSCH.

You can downline load the code on an RW531, all you need is a PC with and
Adaptec board in it, or a Laptop with a SCSI PCMCIA card. The code for an
RW531/RW532 can be found at:

     http://whatsa.shr.dec.com/~specs/optical/RW/RW5XX/FIRMWARE/dld.zip

Unzip this using PKUNZIP, and read the Readme file for instructions. In the
near future we plan to have the code for all released Jukeboxes on-line. I
have gotten permission from HP to distribute it.

    Thank you Rob.

Just wanted to post an update I got from the HP QBR yesterday. (That's
Quarterly Business Review for most of us.)

MCS Logistics was present and acknowledged and addressed all current
spares issues. They claim they have worked out all HP spare module code
    problems with HP.

    Re: .3

It sounds like this machine was shipped in a "non-working" state.

Was the machine supplied by DEC or a VAR?

Although it won't fix the customer any quicker, it might help to
protect DEC's name if the source of the problem was identified.

If the machine was supplied by a VAR, how is it that DEC are accepting
responsibility for fixing it? Or is this on a chargeable basis to the
    VAR?

If the machine was supplied by DEC then the history before it's
arrival on site needs to be investigated.

It may be that somebody "borrowed" the A/C controller to fix another
problem while the unit was passing through a depot.

    			Curious!!

807.10Another culprit??KERNEL::CLARKSTRUGGLING AGAINST GRAVITY...Fri Mar 21 1997 15:5022
    Hi Y'all...
I'm beginning to think there may be a problem elsewhere in the
    organisation.

I've just had a call fom an engineer who was called in to assist
with a customer installation of an RW531 which had fouled up.

When he arrived on site...guess what? "I NEED CODE" on juke's front
    panel!

This is a new machine just shipped direct to site.

Are HP shipping juke's directly to DIGITAL customer's??

If so, it looks like some are not being configured to the DEC code
    spec.

We've blamed logistics, we've blamed engineering, what's the
department called that deals with Juke shipping? (Just for a change!!)
