778.0. "OSMS V3.4 - WORM with a FILES-11 format" by TAVIS::MERON () Mon Feb 10 1997 18:56

Our customer has a huge VAX-VMScluster V6.2, which will gradually be migrated
to an Alpha-VMScluster. He wants to add a StorageWorks optical library (RW555),
and will use the OSMS V3.4 software (for VAX and Alpha):

I read the OSMS V3.4 SPD, and I have some questions :

 1) Can both the 2.3GB and the 2.6GB media be initialized as WORM or rewritable?
 2) Can I have an example of how to set the media to be WORM or rewritable.
 3) Can the WORM media be initialized to have the FILES-11 format (Alpha & VAX)?

Many thank
Meron.

P.S - Who is the OSMS product manager ?

    1. No. The media is physically different for WORM and R/W.

    2. Buy WORM media = WORM, buy R/W media = R/W.

    3. WORM media is not supported on Alpha OpenVMS, at least not yet.

DIR/TIT=prod will get you the current product manager.

    1.	If you notice the part numbers for the media specified at the
end of the release notes you will see they end in -01 or -02.
This means the media is ( R/W or WORM ) and (its is 512/bytes
per sector). This means that the capacity it 2.3GB maximum.

    2.	The hardware determines which type of media is un use. OSMS
does not maintain the media type information for the user. This
means that once the media is placed in the jukebox the user
must "know" if JBAxxx is a R/W disk or WORM disk. There is no
setting the media to WORM or rewritable.

    3.	The WORM media cannot be "initialized" to have the FILES-11
format but a full rewritable disk can be copied to a WORM disk
to create a WORM disk that has FILES-11 data. This can be
    	done on Alpha and VAX.

Do a DIR/TITLE=PROD to find product people information.
