373.0. "Mardi Gras/Carnival" by SOLANA::BROWN_RO (I Wants To Get Funked Up.) Fri Feb 19 1993 20:26

Seeing that Fat Tuesday is once again upon us, and that the
world's largest party has already commenced, I was wondering if MUSIC
noters have any favorite songs that relate to the holiday celebrated
as Mardi Gras in the francophile countries, and called Carnival
in others? Or, simply favorite party songs?

The three biggest parties I know of are the Carnival in Rio, Mardi
Gras in New Orleans, and Carnival in Trinidad. Samba in Rio,
Blues/R&B/Zydeco/Cajun in New Orleans, and Soca/Calypso/Steel Pan in
Trinidad are the music styles I know of.

Has anyone attended this or any other interesting celebrations?

    Any favorite artists or songs?

I went to Mardi Gras once many many years ago. Biggest hangover of my
    life.

My husband is from Germany which celebrates "Karneval" (the origins of
which mean "meat eating" since it was the last day you could eat meat).
On the Thursday before Lent is "Old Wives Festival Day". The women
dress up like old women and take over the town hall and such. They
also carry around scissors which they use to cut off the tie of any
unlucky man they happen to come across. Karneval involves quaffing
enormous quantities of beer and partying 24 hours a day until
Wednesday. The music changes from year to year and usually involves a
lot of brass bands with oompa-oompa music :-)

This is also how it is celebrated in the Swiss German part of
Switzerland except for Basle which, for some odd reason, celebrate it
    one week later !

My band Gator Bait, which does cajun/zydeco/New Orleans stuff, did a
Mardi Gras party on a double bill with a Brazilian band last year.
Wow! We got smoked 8^) 8^) Anyway, it was a wild event. One thing
is for sure, Mardi Gras and carnival songs are made for only one
    thing: dancing!
