34.0. "Prince" by PIPE::GOOD (Michael Good) Mon Nov 04 1991 17:52

Here's a note to discuss Prince's music. We were just starting a
discussion of the new album, "Diamonds and Pearls" in Music V3's note
366 as this new conference started. So I'll repost the 3 notes from
that discussion in .1 to get things going again.

-< Diamonds and Pearls - another great album! >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No review of Diamonds and Pearls yet? Well, I'll jump in...

In .187 Alan mentioned that Prince played Cream and Daddy Pop on
Arsenio's show, and hoped that the whole album is this good. Well, I
didn't hear Prince on Arsenio, but I have good news anyway. On the
album, Cream and Daddy Pop are pretty representative songs. most of
the album is at least that good; much is better, IMHO. Only a couple
songs strike me as album filler material, and even those are pretty
    pleasant.

I like this NPG sound that's very apparent on Daddy Pop and several
other songs on the album (like Gett Off, Jughead, and Push). Prince
and NPG have integrated Tony's raps into Prince's sound very nicely on
the album, making something that sounds new while still sounding like
Prince. Great dancing material, and it must be great to see on stage!

Then there are a couple of memorable slower songs, including the title
track and Insatiable. Prince also gets in a couple of topical
references to the Gulf War, most notably in Live 4 Love. But the
biggest surprise for me was a little swing tune called Strollin'. I
only have about a half dozen of Prince's albums, but I've never heard
him do anything like this! A nice change of pace and very catchy.

So Prince has done it again and released another great album! And
though it's as long a CD as Graffiti Bridge, it's back down to normal
CD prices - hooray! Highly recommended to Prince fans. I don't expect
it to convert any Prince-haters, though.

    RE: .196

I beg to differ on the quality of _Diamonds_and_Pearls_. I've followed
Prince since the early days of "Soft & Wet", D&P may sell a lot of
copies, but it will not go down as one of his best.

Prince is known as an innovator. This album does *ABSOLUTELY* nothing
innovative. The title track is just as drippy as the title song for
_Graffitti_Bridge_. "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" could be found on any
Steely Dan album. "Strollin" is simply a re-thread of "Still Waiting"
from his second album. *AND* most of the Raps are in the same league with
the Sugar Hill Gang... Oh, and let us not forget that "Insatiable" was
in a previous life "Scandalous" (Batman Soundtrack), "When 2 R in Love"
(LoveSexy & The Black Album), "Condition of the Heart" (Around the
World...), and/or "Do Me" (Controversy)... u get the picture

"Daddy Pop" and "Cream" are perhaps the best tracks. "Jughead" and
"Gett Off" and definitely in the groove... but none of them are "Bob
George" or "When Doves Cry" or "Little Red Corvette"

If you thought _Purple_Rain_ was Prince's first "really good album"
then you'll probably like D&P. Myself, I'm still trying to think of an
    appropriate name for the record...

    _Zircon_&_Beads_?
    _Diamonelles_&_Costume_Jewelry_?
    _Stones_&_Oyster_Irritant?

    later,

    douglas

ps: All this said... I like the album.

    Firstly ,
the covers of the CD and Cassette are great . I'm annoyed
that the hologram didn't go on the record as well. Side one is first
class stuff. "Thunder" is too long and if it was shorter would be single
material. The title track isn't great. "Willin'and Able" is the best
track on the l.p. "Strollin'"isn't far behind . It reminds me of "Slow
    Love" .
Side two isn't nearly as good really. "Live 4 Love" could
really do the business if it was shorter. If the man got rid of his
"JAMMIN'" tendancies the L.P. would be more coherent and sound less
    like just another funk workout.
Alltogether better than "Batman" and "Graffiti Bridge" but not
as good as "Lovesexy" . (7.5 out of 10)

BTW why didn't "GETT OFF " do the biz in the States like it
    did in the U.K.?

I just picked it up over the weekend and haven't gone thru the
whole CD twice yet. But I do like it more than G Bridge so
far. What took me TOTALLY by surprise was Jughead!! My total
exposure to rap is only the various hits that stay on my radio
as long as it takes me to hit the scan button. But this is one
killer tune - what a groove!! And the rapping is, to me, very
creative compared to what's on the radio.

I must say that his versions live on MTV and esp. Assenio were
far, far better than the CD tunes. Great band!!

Also, I hope he sticks with real drums from now on.

will come out so soon after Diamonds and Pearls . If it comes out it

Article 1518 of clari.news.music:
Subject: Prince writing ballet score
Date: 27 Feb 1992 15:56:10 GMT

IOWA CITY, Iowa (UPI) -- Rock star Prince says he was so inspired by a
performance of the Joffrey Ballet, he is writing a score for the
company's scheduled appearance in Iowa City, organizers said Thursday.
Prince told Artistic Director Gerald Arpino he would write music for
the internationally famous ballet company.
The Joffrey will perform ``Billboards'' seven times at Hancher
Auditorium in Iowa City over the course of five or six days. No dates
have been set for the ballet but the new score will be the centerpiece
of Hancher's 1992-93 season celebrating the auditorium's 20th
anniversary.
Auditorium Director Wallace Chappell said he hopes Prince's
involvement will introduce a new generation of Iowans to ballet.

DIAMONDS AND PEARLS ALBUM REVIEW

Prince opens his new album with Thunder. A strong musical piece
with sitar-sounding synthesizers ala Around The World In a Day.
Lyrically, this song has the same religious convictions of Eye No
(Lovesexy). This song will be the main theme used by the Joffrey
Ballet for their performances in Iowa City. The only slight let-
down is the plinky-plonky keyboards feigning a miserable "house"
riff. Fierce guitar works well in a duet with the synths.

Daddy Pop opens with a loud bang. Adjust your hi-fi level before
you let this ripper roll. By far the funkiest tune on the LP, it
rocks, rolls and challenges happy feet to keep still. Basically,
Prince claims himself as The Daddy of Pop (I.e. Nobody's better!)
An ode to Himself, it's pretty much like Baby I'm a Star (Purple
Rain) and kicks like Housequake (Sign "O" The Times). He quiets
critics stating he is not about to dry up of tunes - "I've got
grooves and grooves up on the shelf...".
FACT: Prince has an estimated 400 unreleased songs in his vault at
Paisley Park Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He owns the complex
and has to book time to record just like everyone else!

Diamonds and Pearls is the first ballad you'll find on the LP.
Very simple musically, it's almost kindergarten-like. This child-
like quality is found on the song Graffiti Bridge, only that the
instrumentation here is polished up to give it a more sophisticated
R & B feel, and thus greater adult appeal. Prince did well to
convert one of his most unliked songs according to a fans' poll
(Graffiti Bridge) to one which is cherished by most fans.
Sentiments on this song are plain, heartfelt, simple and sweet.
Rosie Gaines lends her lungs to good use.

Cream is steady rock and roll fodder. Not venturing much and not
getting anywhere much. Fair comparisons could be drawn with some
of Eurythmics' duller compositions. Pure rock and roll which just
goes on a boring merry-go-round. Not very inventive. This is
Prince holding back his genius. Musically compromising to
guarantee a hit. Success formula attained.

Strollin' brings to mind a song which you might get if you bring
George Benson and Al Jarreau together. Light-hearted, frivolous,
jazzy and non-plus. Prince does easy-listening. It is good that
this piece is included on the LP; just to show what a versatile
and multi-faceted musician he really is. Not many people
appreciate how talented this chappie is.

Yet another strong offering in the form of Latin-flavoured, swaying,
hip-swinging number. Rhythm guitar licks form the melody to this
track. Interesting interjections between vocals, guitar, drumming
and gospel backing provides the hook. Rap gets tuned in via radio
transmission. A totally-together masterpiece. Rumour has it that
Spike Lee directed a music video for this song, but it seems that
this may not be released as a single after all.

Heavy percussions and bass guitar form the backbone to this first
single release from the album. Gett Off. Prince raps/sings for
the first time on vinyl (Not counting the unreleased Dead On It
(Black Album)). Melody line is alternated between grinding guitar
(Prince) and serene flute (provided here by Eric Leeds, Prince's
ex-Saxophonist and Madhouse's main man). Eric is on a "break" to
further his own career and promote his debut album which Prince
contributed heavily. Gett Off - an unlikely dance track which
grows on you.

Lisa (Cosby Show) Bonet supposedly directed the video to Walk Don't
Walk, but alas, it will not be released as a single. Pity. It's a
song about believing in yourself and not having to "flow with the
tide", it's about being true to your own vision and sticking to it.
A feel-good-about-yourself song which raises self-esteem. Hopping
keyboards and sha-la-la choruses make this an easy sing-along song.
Off key car horns adds humour to this bouncy piece.

Jughead is straight rap without the sugar. A track that could be
written solely by the band members themselves. Tony M and Rosie G
runs the show as the main rappers. As suggested in the lyrics, it
tells you to "get stoopid". This really isn't a very cerebral song.
This not very impressive album filler may have been inspired by the
character in the Archie comics. The dialogue at the end between
Tony M and a supposed show-manager spins an interesting story -
perhaps it's a recount of Prince's personal experience of mis-
management by his ex-managers?

Prince dabbles in politics again since last attempts Ronnie, Talk 2
Russia (Controversy) and Sign "O" The Times (SOTT) in Money Don't
Matter 2 Night. His views on world politics is underdeveloped and
tends to be loosely based on unspecific events. There really isn't
any point in having politically ambiguous songs - nothing's achieved,
no message gets delivered. Here, he stretches a domestic scene to
one of innocent children dying from war. There's no connection
whatsoever.  Musically, much in the vein of the group Simply Red;
politically, it would be better handled by Midnight Oil or Public
Enemy.

Push stomps hard and is driven by an incessant beat. Backward violins
(probably samples off Clare Fischer) creates an elated mood. Falsetto
vocals gives this track its highly-strung adrenalin. Similar vocals
were applied to Lemon Crush (Batman). This is yet another self-esteem
booster with the positive message not to let anyone put you down and
keep "pushing until you get to higher ground". There's yet another
feel-good song which was given to Martika entitled Spirit (Martika's
Kitchen) also written around the same time. Tony M, Rosie Gaines and
Prince take turns rapping as they get cheered to do their thing on the
mic. Prince teases as he refuses to go on the mic before vocally
gliding in in an off-beat manner, then takes full control as he does a
stammering rap climbing up and down the scales. Truly amazing feat!

Prince croons his way through the next love/lust ballad, Insatiable.
Musically reminiscent of Scandalous and Crucial (not released), it is
full of mushy "I love you/I want you" bedroom antics. Gentle, bobbing
music with teasing lyrics paint a playpen scene; quivering falsettos
elevate you to new tonal peaks; carnal sensuality gets explored to
its limits. The word "Naughty" has given birth to a new dimension!

Live 4 Love. The album's final message is rather gloomy. This rigid
piece reeks of militarian dogma. Heavy indoctrination leaves me
reassessing some personal values. Steady drumming and repetitive
instrumentation makes this track predictable, bordering on being
boring; even some parts of the drumming sounds dated. Grinding
guitarworks is the only salvation on this one. Hendrix revisited.
There's too much anger here to close the album with. Not a good
ending piece.

If anyone wants to continue the "Prince Quote'o'the Day", why don't
they send E-mail to SNOFS1::CHO, that person can set up a @PRINCE

I kind of liked reading the quotes.

Quotes in personal names, quotes in "what are the lyrics too?", quotes
in "how does this song go?", quotes in lyric contests; quotes are everywhere..

Is it just me or does this conference seem to be a bit heavy handed?
It all goes along with if you don't like it then by all means
don't read it....maybe there are others that do? Unless of course you
are the moderator (yes I know) and then I guess it's your right to be
heavy handed.

oh well, I shouldn't start a rat hole....

This should be in the "Moderator" topic, but once down a rathole...

If you think THIS conference is heavy handed...you should see TV and
    MOVIES. ;^)

THIS conference is rawther easy-going and light, compared to others
    that I'm in.

I love quotes, too. I collect them. Lyrics, phrases, etc. But all I
could think was, this is supposed to be the "Prince" topic - to talk
ABOUT him and his music! A quote a day, and this topic will shoot up
to the thousands! That's why I suggested the mailing list. This way,
people who WANT Prince Quotes can get 'em, and it won't take up the
    entire conference.

    Anyway...ain't Prince great? ;^)

I have to confess that although I like Prince, all I have is the
soundtrack to "Purple Rain" and the 45 "When Doves Cry/God" ("God",
while in the movie, isn't on the soundtrack...but when I put the album
on cassette, I am adding it on).

Also, "Purple Rain" was the FIRST movie I'd ever bought outright.

Reveiw: Prince and the New Power Generation
live at the RDS Showjumping Arena, Dublin,Ireland
        Saturday June 13th 1990

'The greatest show on earth' -that's what the huge screen beside the stage
in the RDS declared before the show began, not even I took it seriously ....
This was'nt as I mentioned before Princes first concert of the European
Tour he has already played a string of dates in Germany, but it was jumpin!

What an incredible show it was! Easily superior to the' Nude tour ' concert
in Cork 2 years ago-Prince and the NPG were in fantastic form. The show
actually lived up 2 the slogan on the big screen,4 this I have 2 admit
(I've alway's been a fairly critical P fan),this was the best live
performance yours truly has ever witnessed in 9/10 years of concert going.

Jackson is playing here in Ireland next month but though his show will
undoubtedly be quite a spectacular,it could not compare to the Prince show
which was gyratingly funky and powerful from start to finish -4 on saturday
in the RDS Prince was untouchable.

Prince teased and delighted the crowd 2 a frenzy, the crowd were literally
begging 4 more when they first left the stage.Any doubts I've ever had
concerning Princes live performance were completely wiped out. What talent!
The 26,000 strong crowd were at his mercy and he made it look so easy
that I had 2 be jealous!

Here's a reveiw which appeared in The Irish Independent( a national newspaper)
on Mon June 15th.(accompanied with a large pic of P)

                     -----------------------------

Headline: MICHEAL JACKSON EAT YOUR HEART OUT...
          GIANT SHOW FROM LITTLE PRINCE

by Tony O'Brien

There are bands ,there are singers, there are groups, there are songwriters,
there are dancers, there are performers...and then there is Prince!

Phsically dwarfed by one of the most stunning stages ever seen in Dublin,
Prince Roger Nelson still managed to tower above it all at the RDS on Saturday
night and in the process throw down the gauntlet to Micheal Jackson.

Jackson and Prince both made their Irish debuts at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in recent
years but this was the first time either had performed in Dublin.Prince
came and conquered with a simply sensational show, leaving Micheal with a lot to
do at Lansdowne Road next month.

On a balmy summer evening the showjumping arena at the RDS on saturday proved
a surprisingly perfect setting for the antics of the Minneapolis Minstrel
, the heir to James Brown throne, whose singing, musicianship and dancing,(
usually all at the one time) was nothing short of mind-blowing.

......

There was a scare as Prince arrived on at 8.15 when the crush at the outer
safety barrier ringing the stage became very dangerous.Quick action
by security men, including promoter Peter Aitken and first aid staff,
eased the pressure as hundreds of frightened youngsters were hauled out of the
crowd.

American Curtis Stigers opened the show while Dubliner Andrew Strong
delivered his now predictable set,but the non appearance of Prince protege
Carmen Electra through illness meant that the Purple Royal arrived on stage
virtually on time according to the running order.

.....

From there it was an amazing aural and visual assualt in an all singing ,all
dancing show. The stage looked like a cross between a harem and a space
age temple ,dominated by Princes trade mark union of the sexes symbol.

New Power Generation set a shocking pace of funk ,with Rosie Gaines a
vocal power unto herself. There were scantily clad female dancers first
but the male dancers singers were something else again ,their choreography
remarkable.

But the star of it all, of course was Prince. He may stand only 5 foot tall
but he is a musical giant and a genius ,one of the few truly original and
adventurous artists operating in rock today.

                     -----------------------------

Pretty positive. The NPG it has 2 be said were really quite good, definitely
the best band that P has had 2 date.Great dancing and rapping(generally I
dislike rap but this sounded great and was fantastic 2 dance 2)from the guys.
The band could hold their own when P left the stage during Daddypop only 2
appear a few minutes later on the big screen rapping from the dressing room. The
screen was excellent 4 people down the back , it even showed a girl up the
front crying her eyes out during Purple Rain( melodramatic ? - no not really,
but U no P+girls,...).

The highlight of the show 4 me was when P broke into a quick rendition of
'A Love bizarre ',one of my fav unreleased P tracks which I was surprised and
delighted 2 hear on stage.Other highlights included Let's go crazy,Daddy pop,
Purple Rain,Sexy MF, Gett off and 1999 in the encore.I can't remember the order
of all thesongs but I'll post a full tracklist when I can .He played 4 over
2 1/2 hours, other songs played included Thunder, D+P ,Kiss ,Insatiable ,
Jughead,
Live 4 love ,Push ,Doctor Feelgood,Baby I'm a star ,Cream,
My name is Prince....etc

If P's popularity in the U.S is not as big as it is here in Europe,I think
all he has 2 do is 2 hit the road over there.

Dance Or Die!

What is it with "Sign 'O' the Times" as everyone's favorite album??
It's one of my least favorite Prince albums that I do know, well
behind 1999, Purple Rain, Black, and D&P. I mean, it's OK, I enjoy it,
and I can see it being someone's favorite album, but these unanimous
#1 or 2 ratings surprised me.

I think the reason for me is the diversity of the Cd...as well
with 1999..I can go from a fast song to a slow one and even some
    blues..

Plus the lyrics have something to do with it as well.

I agree with 34.61. SOTT is a "Grab Bag" of musical styles. I feel
(IMHO) that this displays the true diversity of Prince.

I think SOTT is the best album so far ,but that many of the other albums
contain better songs.SOTT ranks no.1 4 me because of the number of styles
P melts together, also the fact that this was P's first solo album in 5 years
gave the album a very distinctive sound.P also produced a lot of songs
around this time which were not released. Some later appeared on Graffiti
Bridge (We can funk,Can't stop...,Joy In Repitition)or became B-sides.
The 87 versions of the 3 songs above R much preferable 2 me(They appear
on the unreleased set 'Chocolate Box'.)

I placed DIRTY MIND second on the list because it was a very important album
in P's career -a huge change artistically from the previous Stevie
Wonderesque 'Prince'.Also I love the raw feel the album has due 2
being recorded on 16 track.

PARADE I think is his most underestimated album.I put it at no.3 because
of the fantastic Kiss, the funky Girls and boys, and the wonderful Sometimes
it snows...3 of his best songs I think.

The BLACK album speaks 4 itself and 1999 and PURPLE RAIN at 5+6 were
great achievements being commercial and critical successes.

I would have preferred LOVESEXY 2 B a more powerful/solid album, side 2
especially seems a bit of a mess.

Nothing really new with CONTROVERSY,but some great funk especially
the title track.

AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY comes in 4 a bit of a hammering with the dreary
America, and lack of anything approaching a killer track-highlights include
Poplife,Raspberry beret,Tamborine,..

D+P a bit 2 commercial 4 my liking but P really brings these songs 2 life
in concert especially the funky/rap numbers.

PRINCE made P a teen idol in 1979 ,with the smash hit 'I wanna be your lover'
.Some great crooning and guitar from P and on reflection it probably
deserved better than the no.11 spot.

FOR YOU - P's first album. He tries 2 do 2 much showing off here as a result
it ends up more of a showcase 4 his potential, nevertheless I tend 2 give
it a spin quite a lot.

I had high hopes 4 GRAFFITI BRIDGE after the commercial exploits of BATMAN
but I was dissapointed. This should not have been a double album in my
humble opinion ,there are some very good songs here but also some of the worst
P has committed 2 vinyl. It could have been a great single album- I hated
Thieves in the temple.Loved Joy in repition.

BATMAN -Partyman's a great track and I loved the video.P recorded this L.P
reputedly in 9 days from scratch. It's not bad ,quite entertaining really
but hardly vintage Prince when u consider what he is capable of.

Over the last few years I've veered towards listening 2 P's unreleased
material(whenever I could get my hands on some) more than the above album's.
It shows u a funkier side 2 P that he has'nt committed 2 vinyl yet
 (apart from the Black album).

That's correct the new album is labelled by the "union of the sexes
symbol" as seen on Princes motorbike on the Purple Rain album cover, and
the back of the Let's Go Crazy/Erotic City 12" single. If my memory
serves me correctly P is portrayed on the GB album cover wearing a
"union of the sexes" earring.Earrings like this were also on sale
during the "Nude Tour" as part of the official merchandise.Androgeny
would B a great name 4 the album, many critics have pointed out that
there is an androgynous side 2 P and his work.Whether u think there is
or is'nt ,such a title could only add 2 what the public veiw as the
mystique and controversy that surrounds P.

"Power played" is a radio term, it means that a record is also well

Hi Douglas,
I can find out exactly what happened 2 Dez 4 u , but off the top
of me head - I think he became disillusioned with P's way of running thing's
(general like) while they were touring + he left the band,+ joined some
rock combo.
There's a book called 'A poplife ' by Dave Hill,which I lent 2 a friend some
month's ago and still have'nt got back but as far as I remember
it contains the info on Dez and more besides.

34.80A bit about DEZ!ISEQ::MKEENANWed Jul 08 1992 08:0236

-On 2nd Aug 82 Dez Dickerson played a cocert at the 1st Avenue club in
Minneapolis,though still a member of P's band.While P was writing + recording
1999 on his own Dez had put a band together and recorded a 9 song demo tape.A
record contract was under consideration but nothing came of it.Dez said to the
local City Pages:-

'Prince is all for us doing our own music - I'm playing a synthesis of power pop
,hard rock + everything that's gone in one ear + out the other.'
                                                                (DEZ)
-Uncredited Dez played guitars + drums on the Vanity 6 L.P.
-Dez played a guiutar solo on Little Red Corvette.
_He went on to tour with P in Nov 82.

-July 83 Dez leaves the Revolution to form his own band the 'Modernaires'.

'I did'nt feel comfortable with myself anymore, because of that I bacame very
difficult to be around.I was pretty moody - later I realised that was just
a by product of not being very happy with what was happening and where we were
going + at the same time feeling there was'nt a whole lot I could do to
have any impact on it .I dealt with by being a jerk. I guess if I'd been
him I would probably have fired me.'
                                    (DEZ)

-Dez's departure was amicable + he and his band later performed in the Purple
Rain Film. An L.P by the Modernaireswas scheduled for release by Warner
Brothers but for some reason the record company decided not to release it.
Following the Modernaires Dez has continued working as a musician in
Minneapolis.
-He did'nt do a solo deal because he felt the record companies were only
interested in the Prince stereotype.
-Dez has recorded with various artists including Aretha Franklin + an
Atlanta band called Safe House.
-Dez's replacement was Wendy Melvoin.

    Stories about Prince...

One of the "Paparazzi" people was asked who was the hardest
person to get a picture of? The answer was Prince. This photographer
went on to tell the story about how he had got some inside info that
Prince was going to be in N.Y to see a play.

"Prince plays cat and mouse with the press" the guy adds. Anyways,
myself and 12 others showed up at the theater. At curtain time,a limo
flanked by two sedans pull up, but just sit idle for about 10 minutes.

Suddenly, the limo and the sedans drive off. The photographers were
stunned! But no one left. Then the three cars came around a corner and
pulled up again. The Limo's door opened! "It was chaos," My manager
said there he is shoot him, as everyone piled on top of one another to
    get a shot of Prince.

Ten bodyguards piled out of the limo pushing photographers away.
Here's the punch line as he says laughing.

They put Prince in the back sedan and snuck him in behind us. It
was brilliant. "We heard him laughing at us, this high, little laugh.

    	He skipped into the theater...

Ron ,
I also am a little irked by this ridiculous contract.Mainly
because big bucks = commercialism + I'd hate 2 C Princes music
going more commercial than D+P.Based on the last single 'Sexymf'
I think the new album may not B as commercial, indeed insider
reports suggest it's going 2 be his most experimental yet.Time
will tell!!!!

As regards the album being a complete stiff saleswise I
very much doubt this will happen,Prince has a hardcore following
(larger in Europe than in the States)that ensures any album he
releases will sell at least in the region of a million
copies.Personally I would hate 2 C any P album selling 2 much
since it would probably mean it was 2 commercial 4 my liking.I
beleive sales is not the top priority with P's albums (e.g ATWIAD
was released a mere 7/8 months after Purple Rain),though this
deal may change things ,again only time will tell.(New album
coming out in OCT!).

If the new album is a stiff saleswise and U get a kick out
of it ,that's fine ! But IMO sales DOES NOT EQUAL quality(e.g
Sign O the Times was one of P's smallest selling albums but is
regarded by many as his best 2date).

Once upon a time Prince was a potent performer............
I witnessed P live a few months ago in a 30,000 capacity
outdoors arena ...it was the most potent
,talented,enjoyable,mucical performance I've experienced.I think
there are very few (if any ) performers on the planet(at the
moment) capable of displaying the range of talent Prince did
that night.Far exceeding my expectations, 4 I had my doubts b4
the show whether P could cut it live anymore.

Below is a list of acts that I know prince has worked with. Who have I
    left out?

The Time The Family Shiela E.
Jill Jones Vanity 6 Apollonia 6
Elisa Fiorello	Dale Bozzio Jill Jones
    Ingrid Chavez	Mavis Staples Madhouse

There was also a singer who did a couple of country albums and then did

Sheena Easton and Prince eh? I still can't get my head round that
even after all these years. I think most Brits still marvel at this

Add to the list the Dutch 1st lady of saxophone Candy Dulfer. she was
featured in the video of Partyman ("If I want sax, I call Candy!")

And the equally Dutch group Lois Lane, who had a hit recently with
prince-produced "Qualified" overhere. Shortly after that a heavy dance mix
was made by 'Little' Louie Vega.

    Sorry, feeling patriotic today....;-)

Sidenote: Many artists feel it a 'privilege' to have worked with Prince.
But now I've seen the list, I'm beginning to wonder if there are other
artists who have had so many collegues join in? In other words: What's the
privilege of working with Prince? He's talented allright.....

That was kinda funny; I had 2 laugh!!

BUT...the "cleaned up" version of USMF that I have uses Sax/vocals to
    "cover over the obscenities"

_The Morning Papers_ (one I had not heard b4) is playing as I write this.
The local DJ stated it was off the "cleaned up" album.

    Correction to .109

I had stated that Sax/vocals were used to "cover up" the
"obscenities", but REALLY the name of the song was changed from
'U Sexy Mxxxxx Fxxxxx' to 'U Sexy Mutha', and sax is used to
    "complete" the phrase.

Yes! The new release is out.

It's interesting 2 note that the singles released seem to
imply that this is a "smutty" CD. (ie: Sexy MF)

BUT when you give it a spin, you find USMF quite misleading
to the style/type of music that's included.

I felt it was MUCH BETTER than D+P, and I loved D+P!

It really is a great mix! Some great jazz undertones!

No, it's not part of the Centrum, althought it's not far from there either.

Take Rt. 290 south from Rt. 495 to the Rt. 9 exit. Take a right at the
bottom of the ramp. At the fork just in front of you, go left. Then take
a right at the next set of lights (this is Rt. 9). The New Aud is a block
up on your right (you can't miss it). It's only a 1/4 mile from the Rt. 290,
not far at all.

I went last night - fyi, the balcony seats were all general admission, so
get there *early* if you have balcony seats!

Beats me. I was out of town this weekend, went down to the Orpheum
via the T last night, and found the show had been moved to somewhere in
Worcester. By the time I took the T back to my car, I would have been
lucky to make it to Worcester in time to hear any of the first set -
even if I knew where the auditorium was. So I got a refund instead.
If Prince wants to be an unprofessional prima donna I guess that's his
privilege but I couldn't be bothered chasing him around the state.

said she heard a rumor that the Prince concert was being move to Worc.

At least The New Aud is small and I don't think any of the balcony
    seats were bad.

In case anyone is wondering why the change of location here's what I
heard..... seems the Orpheum couldn't handle the stage set. Prince
wanted to cancel but his manager mentioned The New Aud in Worc. Now
why couldn't they have figured that out earlier????

That wouldn't surprise me. The stage and lighting set that Prince had was
enormous - seemed closer to the size of rig for the Centrum, not the Orpheum.
I think the Orpheum stage is deep, but not wide enough (Prince had a huge
lighting rig shaped in the title of his new album, and it was BIG).

I acquired the following semi-chronological mapping of cuts from the
Prince "Hits/ B Sides" triple CD, to figure out whether it's worth buying.

Looks pretty good, though I understand it uses singles mixes/edits on some
cuts (e.g., lots of guitar cut out of "When Doves Cry").

Every semi-fan is sure to find favorites missing. My list would include
Free (1999), Beautiful Ones & Computer Blue (PURPLE RAIN), Girls & Boys
(PARADE), The Cross (SIGN O' THE TIMES) -- and no cuts from BLACK ALBUM.

(From the latter I would guess Prince & Warners intend to release BLACK

Last night I ordered my tickets to "Billboards", performed by the
Joffery Ballet, which is coming to the Wang Center; opening January 18th
    and going until the 23rd.

I have tix for opening night, but I'm wondering if this is the first
of the tour, or if this is being performed in Iowa first. Anyone know?

The Prince fanzine "CONTROVERSY" has regrettably folded. The UK based
magazine which was officially acknowledged by Prince as a fanzine
printed its last Magazine in October. All Prince items and I'm sure
there's a few juicy ones will be put up for sale and open for
subscribers to buy. No official word on why it folded but rumour has
it that Paisley Park were a bit heavy handed and want to run there own
    fanzine thus shutting down "CONTROVERSY".

Has anyone heard the new KATE BUSH album which Prince wrote many tracks
The album is called "RED SHOES". The new Mavis Staples album and the
new George Clinton albums are out or due out soon, Prince wrote and
co wrote most songs on both albums.

Don't you agree that "PINK CASHMERE" which is on the greatest hits

The song you are refering to is "Another Lonely Christmas" and
is a B side song from his newest release. (FYI - It has two CD's of
the Hits and one CD of B sides, and it's called "The Hits, The B
sides") Some great songs are included; ones that I've been lucky
enough to have collected over the years! Now I have them on CD...

Oh yes.

But I can't understand this selling strategy.
First they release two CD's with hits, then
a package with the two CD's again, now bundled with
the B-sides hits.
Why do I have to buy the whole package if I just want
the B-sides hits ??

The way I understood it, you could buy either the hits or the B-sides
or both; whatever you prefer...IE: you already had the hits, but didn't
have the B-sides, which are harder to collect...

Maybe compulsive collectors want both. ;-) As I remember, the last
release; O+> came out two ways. The "regular" CD, and a "gold" addition
as well. (Which cost more money, hence; worth more to a collector.)

I agree (older stuff). He's bonkers now. And his material and
performance is pablum, pure cliche. Full of himself, indeed. He's full
of $#!+. I can't help but let it bother me when I see someone go from a
powerful innovator to first-class loony, for no good reason than trying
to be more commercially successful, i.e. remaking himself as a
mega-star. If he acts like a mega-star, the world will treat him like a
mega-star. This PR actually does work for the public that laps up all
that cult of personality junk. But for Mr. "o+" it came at the cost of
his professional integrity. Too bad. What a wimpy little piece of fluff
    he's become.

That's my interpretation. Take it or leave it.

34.158TECRUS::ROSTThe creator has a master planWed Jun 08 1994 19:197
I don't think Prince is trying to be more commercially successful at
all, I think he's just doing what the f*ck he wants because even his
albums that stiffed moved plenty of copies. Of course what the artist
wants to do may still be as stupid as what the record comapny would
    like him to do.

    							Brian
34.159LEDS::BURATIhuman crumple zoneWed Jun 08 1994 19:4012
Maybe you're right, Brian, but I've felt that beginning with Purple Rain
(the music to which I mostly enjoyed, btw) he was embarking on a well
organized campaign to make himself into a superstar, rather than letting
it happen on its own. He wasn't an enigma until he began acting the part
    of an enigma.

And I think he designs his material and his whole show to appeal to a
very broad audience. The music designed to be "accessable" by that
audience and the emphasis seems to be all on presentation. I read it
as going after $$$. I could be wrong, but it's what I think.

    Interesting point, Ron.

Have you read "Glory Days", the Springsteen bio? In there, there is a
lot of time spent talking about Bruce's path to recording the "Born In
The USA" album. Basically he and his manager were wrestling with
whether or not to try to make the jump to superstardom (we all know
what they decided!). The pros were money and reaching a wider
audience. The downside was the problems of being *too* famous.

What little I've read about Prince suggests that at some point ("Purple
Rain" probably) he had to make the same decision. How well he's
negotiated the minefield of superstardom depnds on your tastes (I too
prefer the older stuff, but I'm hardly a fan, I own no Prince records
other than one 45). Whereas I think Madonna thinks a *lot* about what
will sell before she does it, I don't think Prince does at all. He
reminds me more of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, two of his peers
who have had spotty track records after long periods of artistic
    growth.

But what do I know 8^)

Have some faith, folks. You are talking about a certifiable
genius after all ;). What strikes me about the last few notes
is how *offended* everyone sounds, such strong language, and
this is usually an indication that the artist is doing something
different enough to jerk you out of your programmed response
(good art, in other words). He may not be there yet, but he's
probably headed somewhere interesting.

BTW, I haven't seen the new stuff. But I'm a BIG fan (can you

Oh, sorry. I get this from my 17-year-old daughter on occasion - we'll be
watching a new Prince video and she'll go on about how *weird* and *ugly*
he is, totally ignoring the fact that the tune is great. And then there's
all the folks who find his music too challenging.

But it happens to me as well - a tune I can't "hear" the first few times
will become a favorite later on.

Bottom line for me: I consider Prince the only true innovator on the scene
for the last 5 or 10 years (Capt. Beefheart is hiding somewhere ;), and the
most prolific musician I can remember, and I take criticism of his music
with several grains of salt.

Hi all,

The Artist Formerly Known As Prince (AFKAP) has released a fantastic album
through his band the New Power Generation entitled Exodus. After legal problems
with Warner Brothers, he managed to wrangle out of the situation by appearing
under yet another pseudonym, Tora Tora.

Exodus is an excellent funk outing with somewhat distracting yet humourous
segues interwoven between songs. Highlights include "Get Wild" which was
featured in the film Pret-a-Porter (Made To Order), "Return Of The Bomb Squad",
Clintonesque "The Exodus has Begun", an angry "Count The Days" (probably in
relation to counting the days til his recording contract expires), "Cherry
Cherry" ( a whimsical ballad), "Big Fun" (reminiscent of Carmen Electra
material), a psychedelic "Hallucination Rain" and current single "The Good
Life".

It's my favourite album of the moment. Comparing to the somewhat disappointing
"Come" album, this sees AFKAP return to form. The funk is on the dollar and
the humour is witty.

I highly recommend this album to any funkateers!

Cheers,
Alex

I heard he showed up at a show last month, but just hung out at the
