121.0. "Tell us about some old LOCAL bands" by SOURCE::ZAPPIA (Adult Oriented Noise) Wed Jan 22 1992 15:28

All this talk about Human Sexual Response, Zulus, Berlin Airlift,
the implied Mission of Burma reference, Charlie Faren - Balloon,
Farrenheit, etc. and the topic on "New Bands" got me to thinking
more and more about "Old Bands".

Tell us about bands that are now defuncted either by choice or
because they didn't receieve the attention you think they deserved.

OK. There are probably too many to list but let's start with a couple
off the top of my head. Traffic, and Cream. Two tremendously talented
bands (with very few members) who are now (more or less by choice I
believe) defunct. On a slightly (ok, wildly) different tangent there
is Blood, Sweat, & Tears. If you're into that kind of sound, easily
one of the most talented and unified sounding bands I can think of (I
think pretty much all of the members came from Julliard). I guess
that's a start. Maybe folks might want to input or just start listing
    others.

Not really what I was looking for but that's okay. I thought it
would be worth noting the bands that never even approached the
level that the bands you mentioned did. Barely out of the basement
types and or local favorites who just went south eevn though they
had a pretty steady following and sounded good to you. No offence to
    	you southereners!

My choice for most under-rated, now broken-up band: Gentle Giant.

I'm also probably one of the few who would admit to pining for a Led
Zeppeling reuinion. But then again, they were certainly *never*
under-rated, and many would claim they were grossly over-rated.
None-the-less, I still enjoy their music quite a bit and wouldn't mind
    hearing more of it...

On a somewhat tangential note, not very many of the "old" bands that
have staged reunions are of much interest to me. Yes and Pink Floyd (I
like them even without Waters) are about all I can think of off the top
    of my head.

There was a band called Linn County with horns and B3 that had an album
out in the late '60's.. great polyrhythms, uncommon time signatures..
they did a great cover of James Brown's "Think" ("about the right
things"). I went to see them at Detroit's Grande Ballroom in 1969,
great show.. the second band was Jimmy Page's new group, Led Zeppelin
(Zep I had just been released). I heard Zep as a Jeff Beck ripoff, and
I was tired, so I went home.

Another group was California's Clear Light, on Elektra. Very good
songwriting, included Tom Paxton's "Mr. Blue" ("we've got our eyes on
you.. think of it as SENSE and not surrender"). 1967 or early 1968.

    Detroit's MC-5. What can I say ?

The Amboy Dukes, Ted Nugent's breakthrough band.

    Iggy and the Stooges..

To get back on the subject of "local" (by which I guess .0 meant
Boston, mebbe it's time to rename the title?):

    The Dark

Don't know too much about them other than their song "Judy" (about Judy
Grunwald, later of Salem 66) was a gem. Quirky pop with a capital Q.
I heard that Reeves Gabrels of Tin Machine was in this band.

    The Real Kids

Where is John Felice these days? This band and its alter ego the Taxi
Boys played some incredible rock and roll, full of energy and hooks.
The song "I Can't Talk To That Girl" nearly melted down my turntable.

    Rubber Rodeo

A Roxy Music soundalike band from RI dressed up as cowboys and doing
covers of "Jolene" and "Wichita Lineman"? Then they signed to PolyGram
who made them fire their bassist, use a machine instead of the
drummer, etc. Leader Bob Holmes is now fronting Boo Radley I think.

    DMZ

Any band that could spawn the Lyres, the Odds, Barrence Whitfield and
the Savages and who knows how many other garage bands should go down in
    history.

    November Group

A female synth pop duo that made some local noise, signed to A&M then
    immediately sank without a trace.

    Girls Night Out

Started as a one-gig goof on the girl groups of the sixties, this band
became a major draw and a victim of its own success, as most of the
members had other things they wanted to do more. Since the band
folded, saxophonists Cercie Miller and Myanna have both been fronting
    jazz bands.

For a Boston band, how about Private Lightning? They were around in
the late 70s and early 80s. We used to see them around here and out at
UMass. The violinist was pretty cool, with the tinsel(?) attached to
the end of her bow. THe lead singer (Adam Sherman, I think) later
joined the Souls, who played around town for a few years with minor
    success.

Every once in a while I'll play the Private Lightning album; real good
stuff bringing back alot of memories.

121.11A couple more...CFSCTC::DRURYBIll Drury - ASDSEE EngineeringWed Jan 22 1992 20:2711
Two more that I can think of are Face to Face and The Drive. The only
time I saw Face to Face was after they had released their last album and
they were playing at the Rat. Not sure why they were still playing the
small clubs after they had gotten some recognition, but maybe it was a
sign that they were on the way out. Great lead singer. The Drive won a
MTV basement tapes contest a bunch of years back and had a couple of songs
on BCN and FNX but I haven't heard of them since. Real good funky band they
did a great version of "Thank you for lettin' me be myself".

Private Lightning ... wow, I totally forgot about them.

How about:

The Proletariat? I have one of their albums, "Indifference."
I've heard that they have another album called "Soma Holiday,"
but haven't been able to find it. Great band - intelligent
	lyrics, weird murky punk sound.

The Slickee Boys? I saw them once at Spit in Boston ...
	haven't heard of 'em since.

121.14From another era...ATIS01::ASHFORTHThu Jan 23 1992 12:1216
Back around the late 60's/early 70's I frequented a club called Brandy's, on
Commonwealth Ave in Boston (Brighton, actually). They had a lot of good bands of
both rock and blues persuasions. It was a real "sawdust on the floor" sort of
casual place, with pinball in back and a small dance floor out front- but I
digress! On to the bands...

One band (which I believe is still around) was "Room Full of Blues." A nice
surprise one night was James Montgomery showing up all of a sudden and sitting
in on harp.

Another which had good original material and a Poco/Loggins&Messina sort of style
was "Wheatstraw." I still recall one original called "Step Outside."

Ah, nostalgia...

let's see... some local bands that i remember and had hoped to see
    more of were:

    	Incredible Two Man Band
    	Duke and the Drivers
    	Fate
    	Maze (later the Dots)

the only ones i know anything about in the "where are they now" arena
is the last one... from what i understand, the old keyboard player is
a tv news reporter (ch 56 mebbe?) and the guitarist, Robert Holmes,
went on to play with 'Til Tuesday and his current project is Ultra
    Blue...

    re: .11

The "great lead singer" in Face to Face was Laurie Sargeant. She's
still playing around Boston and nearby 'burbs with her own band now.
More of a bluesy, country, rootsy feel than the hard rock of Face to
Face (who I never really cared for). Anyway, she does have a great
voice and this band is probably my current local favorite. Check 'em
out. They just knock me out in a way only a few other local bands ever
    did.

Speaking of which ... my favorite local bands of all time (that I
went back to see over and over) would have to be Orchestra Luna (from
way back when), Mission of Burma, and a little-known, off-the-wall
band called the Girls (friends of HSR). Great stuff.

Some of the 'Boston' local bands that I used to love to see
are as follows. No particular order.

    	Atlantics

    	Human Sexual Response

    	Berlin Airlift

    	Mission of Burma

Roomful of Blues - I know, they're out of RI and are still around.

All were great alternatives to the disco scene which was prevalent
    during their heydays.

Append to -1 (Face to Face):

Face to Face split into 2 bands; The Laurie Sargent band and
the Immortals (which I believe is Angelo's band).

Face to Face used to pack 'em in at "Franklin's" in Shirley, Mass.
Franklin's used to get a ton of Boston acts Face to Face, Stompers,
Down Avenue (who got signed and then dropped before releasing their
album), Ball and Pivot, Jon Butcher, Digney Fignus (remember him?
    "Girl with the Curious Hand"?).

-Gentle Giant....truly amazing and not at all fully appreciated.

-Greenslade...Dave Greenslade's solo group after Coliseum split up.
Dave Lawton's vocals still occasionally sound like fingernails on a
blackboard, but some of the writing was beautiful, and well played.

    -Amazing Blondel...

-Blodwyn Pig...I realize they were probably pretty popular in Britain,
but they should have been more widely recognized over here. Just a
great, talented, fun-to-listen-to band. "Dear Jill" is still one of my
favorite tunes, and the liner notes to 'Ahead Rings Out' still crack me
    up.

-Hampton Grease Band...Released one album on Capitol, back in '70 called
'Music to Eat'. A pretty frenetic 5-piece that would evolve tunes into
long, jazzy, harmonically advanced jams (kind of like Ornette Coleman
meets the Grateful Dead), and then would launch into a hyperkinetic
version of 'Rock Around the Clock'.

-If....great combination of jazzers playing rock and rockers playing
jazz. Dennis Elliott of Foreigner was originally from here, I think.

    -The Bonzos....enough said.

When I first started going to clubs to hear local Boston bands, tow of
my favorites were "Rick Berlin: The Movie" and "The Great Divide."

Rick Berlin: The Movie was Rick Berlin's band after "Berlin Airlift."
About two years ago, I had dinner at Doherty's (?) in Dorchester
and was very surprised to be served by Rick Berlin: The Waiter.

I don't know what became of The Great Divide. After they broke up, I
did see two members of the band play - one on guitar, one on one of
those big violin-like things that you play standing up while the
instrument rests on the floor - at the Plough and Stars in
    Cambridge.

I also used to see "New Man" and "The Drive" quite often.

That was then. This is now.

My current favorite local band is the Laurie Sargent band.

Looks like a lot of people, including me, missed the "Local" in the
notes title. That's because the note title is too long! It should just
say "Local Bands" or "Now-defunct Local Bands". Don't write a book in
the title, and don't worry about forming complete sentences. This isn't
    a writing contest, it's a notes file...

It's a good idea to use short titles, and then to clarify the purpose
    of your note in .0.

As already said Luna and Berlin Airlift.

There used to be a band called the Spores that I thought was good but
don't know much about em. Anybody remember anything about them?

Animated String Section (A.S.S) and The Incredible Two Man Band.

Up around Nashua - a band called Soap, Aces and Eights, Branch Brother Band
Crossfire etc.

known as The Jets and at least one of the members was from Manchester,

Others I've seen or listened to:

The Rhythm Method - did some killer Clash and Elvis Costello covers

Humans - Met Dini at Spit during my wife's and my first date. He used

As Jim mentioned, "That's When I Reach For My Revolver"
was their most popular song on Boston stations. "Academy
Fight Song", an earlier single, got some airplay too.
The Mission of Burma CD from Ryko contains all of the Vs.
LP, the Signals, Calls, and Marches EP (with Revolver),
Academy Fight Song, and a couple songs from their live
LP, The Horrible Truth About Burma. This is the famous
over-80 minute CD, still the longest in my collection.

Perhaps this will be totally uncool (the band sure was
at the time), but I liked Midnight Traveler from the
same time period. They never released any vinyl as far
as I know, though. Much more mainstream and country-
flavored rock than the new-wavers and garage bands
listed here.

Private Lightning, ah yes... their first big local hit
was "Song of the Kite". There was another one that got
a lot of airplay. They had a real nice texture. Unfortunately,
    when they finally got a record deal, it sounded way overproduced;
ruined the unique character of their sound imo. I'd love to find
some of the early demo tapes that they made their name on.

I remember the first BCN rumble finals; Someone and the Somebodies
beat out the Dark. Both were off the wall, quirky, fun bands.
I kinda liked the Dark better myself. Someone and the Somebodies
had a minor local hit with a demented cover of "Working in a Coal Mine"

What, nobody's mentioned my favorite forgotten Boston band yet?
The Rings. Two killer albums, great songs, great hooks, great
players, tight catchy power pop with a soul. Why these guys never
made it big has always been a mystery to me.

Ah, so all these years I've been under the mistaken illusion that
'81 was the first year of the Rumble. Oh well.

Amazing list, did you really do that from memory!?

It may be unfair, and sure there are bands that try to beat the system,
but I like the Rumble policy of no repeat entries. One shot, that's
all you get. Some incredible lineups in there, some really great bands

How bout Robert Ellis Oral (apologies on spelling his name...and I think

Hey Jim, your note in .43 reminded me of a band I used to go see all
the time when I was in college: the Hi-Beams.

I first heard them when 'BCN rebroadcast the sets of the 1982 Rumble
finalists. I really liked what I heard. A week or so later, they were
booked to play a show at my school, WPI.

After that, they played around Worcester quite a bit. I caught them
mostly at the Clark University Pub, where I hung out constantly with
    my girlfriend.

Actually, the Pub was a great place to catch Boston acts. That's where
I first discovered Robin Lane, the November Group, and Wild Kingdom.

It wasn't until a year or so later (after my girlfriend transfered to
Wheaton College) that we figured out that traveling to Boston was the
best way to catch Boston bands.

And the rest (along with my girlfriend) is history...

This prompted me to dig out some 'ole Beat magazines, pretty
interesting to see some of the club listings and many of the
	now sadly defuncted clubs.

Judging my the activity here, the next time I'm in one of the
used/new record stores I'm not going to see all those local
records just taking up space, right?

Angry Young Bees, that's it, all I could recall was something Bees.

Plan 9 didn't they get back recently for a reunion or am I thinking
of the Prime Movers? An interesting article in the Phoenix a little
way back said one of these bands was years ahead of the now somewhat
	dated Manchester (England) sound.

Treat Her Right - didn't they sign with a major label?

	Salem 66 - I can't say much more than I already have in RADIO_RADIO
about this band. I clearly like them and miss this band. Their
live sound could have always been better but I always enjoyed seeing
them. A band called Hair Corpse incidentally from New York where
Salem 66 tended to do better in the clubs then in their home town
area of Boston sounds a bit influenced and I use that word loosely,
in the vocal style of Judy and Beth. I only heard one track
by hair Corpse so please no cards and letters. The band among
others can be heard on a free cassette tape that's available
from Galt Records. The address can be found in RAD_RAD, title
free tapes or something like that.

Anyone recall New England, the drummer whose names escapes me right
now has done some producing of local bands around town - was anyone
at the show somewhere a top one of the buildings at Haymarket in
	Boston circa '79?

I wasn't at this show or party or whatever but I recall walking by and
hearing their song that had somewhat of a lot of airplay. I forget
the title "never want to loose/leave you" was one of the lines.

A lot of these I can't even recall their sound but worth mentioning
	I guess...

	Blockyard

Eight Ball or something Eight Point?

Yea, the Swingin' Erudites as already mentioned.

	The recently defuncted Slaves.

The Real Kids influenced Bristols who are an active band but
	just thought I'd mention them.

Trace of Red? what became of them?

A band I can't recall their name at all but the line "night of
the living..." as well as some of the other songs I liked
a lot but never again saw or found who this band was. I recall
them at TT's about 3-5 years ago. Gee, that narrows it now, huh?
	{lost to the alcove in my mind}

As already mentioned Jon Butcher - I heard from a close friend of
his that he is planning on moving back to Boston....

The Fools who are hardly defuncted, they've been playing around
town for years, literally. Likewise the Stompers.

Foster and Tully ? I recall a friend who played drums with
them. Only saw them once at Mass Art but they didn't last long.

Mere Mortal, the guitarists from Planet Street (the song
General Hospital) I think the Mortals only did a one-off gig at
Jacks which I loved but again never saw a word about him or
	this band.

	The Dawgs

	The Lines

	Christmas

Scruffy the Cat - one member's brother new bass player in Titanics
replacing the former Peter Dayton bass player I think.

Til' Tuesday always enjoyed them back away.

Likewise Robin Lane both with band and acoustic - she's still
around the clubs. Edible Rex I think sometime soon.

Who ever mentioned Busted Stages, one member now with Mindgrinder,
the record "Bands that Could be God" you probably already have or
should have.. Some that I recall Salem 66, Womb to Tomb,
Moving Targets, Wrecking Crew (memory errors).

The Turbines, drummer Fred Nazzaro now with/back with the Titanics.

	Yea on Peter Dayton.

The Outlets (David Alex Barton his current project)

More of the ones already mentioned, Face to Face, Balloon...

I'll come back to this but it really bugs me to not be able
	to recall more of this...

A bit of my faith was restored by the crowd that attended the
Poster Children (Champagne, IL) and Sweredriver (England's
	Thames Valley scene {insert your favorite smiley thing here}
	show last night.

As someone mentioned in note 45 in RAD_RAD the club, TT's
would have been much wiser to have had two separate shows.
Clearly Sweredriver would draw well having not made it
over last summer, a domestic record release, etc. and Poster
Children have a good following and getting better all the time
especially considering they've played in the Boston area 3 or 4 times
in relatively short time. The club was quite crowded but as long
as it's not hot I don't mind but it does make it difficult to
jockey for stage position. Anyhow the Fire martial (?) said that
80 people had to leave in order for the show to start which it finally
did. Poster Children by this time had already played. Surprisingly
enough the required number of people took advantage of the refund
(great if you already saw the first band and wanted to leave anyhow)
which is what I friend of mine had done. After Poster Children
finished we moved out of the center stage floor area to the less
crowed bar area and not long after I heard someone saying I'm sorry but
if your standing in this area you're going to have to take the
refund and leave if you don't have an advance ticket. So I quickly
moved to mingle back into the crowd and at last enjoyed the show.

At the height of the crowd there literary was no path to walk in or out
of the club through the main isle. Only once was I regrettable turned
away for a show here, Jane's Addiction 2 years or so ago.

	To be continued in RADIO_RADIO

And lastly Hiding in Public deserve mention who although are not
formerly defuncted I think their Dave Sharp produced project
would have had done better if not for the rather lack luster
promotion, etc. A fun bad to see live and I look forward to
them being back in the clubs. It's True the guitarist could move
about more but last I heard he's working it. The guitarist and
lead singer both were in a more WZBC modern rockish type band
prior to H.I,P. I'd say alternative but that description no longer
makes any sense, if it ever did. There's only two kinds of
music good and bad. There's many marketing descriptions of music,
too many adjectives for me to list via my 2400 baud terminal.

Does anyone remember a Boston band named The Specimens? I saw them a
few times in the late 70's, early 80's at places like the Rat,

Oh yeah! They were from Maine, led by Rick Pinette (who I believe is still
around in the Rick Pinette Band). They had a couple "hit" songs, "Set The
Night On Fire" and "King Of The Hill", and released two albums on Mecury.

I used to see them a lot at the Main Act in Lynn, MA. Good solid pop/rock

Mick Spiros from ITMB has recently (within the last two weeks) joined
a band called Upper U.S. They will be performing at the Stadium Club in
Framingham on Sunday night, Feb. 23rd, at a benefit for the Gulf War
Vets. Also performing will be the Bobby Watson Band, Back Pages and
another band whose name I don't recall, but will find out.

Upper US is a new band who plays all originals. I heard them rehearse

Steve was the bass player, Eric was the keyboardist, Adam the singer, Patty
Van Ness was the violinist, and Paul Van Ness was the guitiarist. I forget

I used to work on their road crew back in 1980. They were all very nice

Ah yes, "Physical Speed" was the title of the other
big song I remember from Private Lightning. Thanks
to Alan Starr for jogging my memory; great tune.

That tune was a big disappointment to me when I finally
heard the album. There was a great demo version that had
been getting steady play on BCN. In contrast, the album
cut had lots of heavy guitars added to the mix; sounded
overproduced and generic, burying the band's uniqueness
imo. Silly stuff too, like changing the line "I turn on
my AM radio" to "I turn on my FM radio", I assume because
FM stations wouldn't play something that mentioned (gasp!)
AM radio. Yeah, it's a little thing, but the original line
evoked a specific image. I suppose these things were
considered good career moves at the time.

There were several local compilations that I have, and was just listening to
this morning (this note reminded me of some of them!).

There were two WCOZ albums, called 'The Best of The Boston Beat' (which was
the name of their local music show, hosted by Leslie Parementer). The
first had The Fools ("She Looks Alright In The Dark"), The Stompers "This Is
Rock And Roll"), Luna ("Hollywood"), and more I can't think of (maybe Johanna
Wilde was one of them? And I think Willie Alexander too...).

The only one I remember offhand from the second one was The Smith Brothers,
and a song called "America". Balloon's "Politcal Vertigo" might have been
on this one too.

Then there was the 'Live At The Metro' album, with two songs each from
the New Models, the Lines, Private Lightning, Stompers, and two other bands.

And not to forget the 'Live At The Rat' album - I haven't listened to that
one in quite a while, I forget most of the bands on there. But I think
Tom Dickie and the Deires was on there (remember "Downtown Talk"? Great song!)

I, too, am a big fan of ITMB - The Incredible Two Man Band. I was
the Sound Engineer/Road Manager for 4 years, from 1976-1979. In that
time, we put out 2 albums, "On My Way" (1976), and "ITMB II" (1978).
The group also had an 8 track tape from the mid-seventies. It was
pretty similar to "On My Way", except for a few changes. I have all
three as part of my collection, as well as a dozen or so live tapes
from clubs (remember the good old days when rock bands played clubs?).

I've been keeping contact with Mick Spiros on and off, and Bobby
Lichtenfels as well. Last time we spoke, Bob had been working at
Hewlett-Packard and hadn't pulled the old Zickos clear drum set out
of the cob webs but twice in 12 years since he stopped playing. One
of the best rock drummers of all time too, very similar to John
Bonham of Led Zeppelin. Bob was the only one to come close to Bonzo.

And of course Mick is similarly compared to Keith Emerson, for his
virtuosity on the keyboards, but it didn't stop there. He played
bass pedals, trumpet, acoustic guitar, drums, and sang. When he
played drums, Bobby played keyboards, only they switched without
the audience knowing. Surely a far cry from today's rock bands.

I'm looking forward to seeing Mick and UPPER U.S. in Framingham on
Feb 23rd. It's been a while. He always joked about having a band
with that name (you know....uppa you a**) you had to be there, I guess.

I could talk about this forever, so I'll stop here. If anyone's
interested in more, reply, and I'll write on.

The Stompers have return back to their original line-up after losing
they keyboard players and the bassist. I believe that they are still
    playing around Boston.

the Fools have completely surrendered any control of their talent

set up their sound and lights, and they had such an attitude that I
have avoided them since then. Of course, this was when their record
had just gotten big, and perhaps time has mellowed them.

The Stompers were probably the BEST club band this side of
the country. The energy they show and the audience participation
is unbelievable. I've been following (not lately though) these
guys for YEARS now. The times up at the Cinema were the best.
Now that they have their original members, I'll have to check them
    	out.

As far as saying they have attitudes, I can agree with Sal Baglio
maybe, but as far as Steve Gilligan (bass) and Dave Freidman (keys),
they are probably the two nicest people I've ever met that are in a
well-known popular band. As a matter of fact, when Steve and Dave
left the band I was pissed and stopped going to see them.

What became/is happening with the Wishniaks from the Philadelphia area?

They and about one or two other bands, Dr. Bombay possibly, on the

Although the nostalgic references here is fine as well as interesting
I was really hoping to hear more about your local favorites who have
yet to reach even their proper level of obscurity, as well as bands
currently with a strong local following or even without one that you
fell deserve more attention than they now get.

For one example, along the lines of an extract from the April Rolling
Stone as listed by some notable people, Butch Vig, etc.

	Firstly the less unknown:

Poster Children - Champaign, IL - recently at New Music
						  Seminar in New York.

Live - coming to Brandeis University as part of 'FNX show.

Levellers - fairly well known in UK (I think)

	And then:

		Hitting Birth - Portland, Oregon
		Galen Herod - Phoenix
Daisy - Athens - Michael Stipe produced.
Chris Mars - former Replacements drummer
		Maggie's Dream - NY
		Opal Fox Quartet
Disposal Heroes of Hiphoprisy - San Francisco.

Noting location only as a point of reference....

I've never been much for random purchasing of music or for stopping
into clubs unknowing of the band who's playing because there's simply
too much music I know I enjoy but sometimes they both	can turn out
	to be good.

One such case, was stopping into TT's (Cambridge, MA) a while back
and seeing Wide Spread Panic who I enjoyed a lot, a very interesting
	blend of original material.

I haven't listened to the tape I picked up that night so I can't
really say too much about their sound but even If I did we know
	how descriptions can be!

I think they're from the Philadelphia area...please tell us more.

Hey Jim, they are from Athens, GA and record on Capricorn. T. Lavitz
(ex and maybe every decade or so Dregs keyboardist) plays with them. They
have 2 disks out. Hard to describe them; a blend of a lot of different
influences (some dead styled jams, rem plus alot more).

The first disk is hard to find (although I live in NH and that may explain
that).

enjoy,

Capricorn will reissue the first Widespread Panic disc soon (it was
supposed to be February but I haven't seen it), with a few additional
tracks left off their newer disc.

This question might have made as much or more sense under the
"Whatever happened..." note but I once asked under the same title
in another conference and never got a response...

Does anyone know whatever became of the guitarist from Planet Street,
a Boston area band circa 1985? The band had at least one song that
got some attention, both in airplay and /legal actions entitled
"General Hospital". The guitarist was also in a short-lived (as far
as I know) band called Mere Mortals. I also recall him performing as
a street musician in Harvard Square in Cambridge.

Was Midnight Traveler the band that did the dynamite near letter
perfect cover of "Green Grass & High Tides" by The Outlaws ? If so I
tested one of my first 35mm cameras on them on the steps of BU.
While we're on the subject, New Models, Face To Face & even 'Til
Tuesday are (were) vastly underrated. New Models guitarist, 'Casey' was
with a band called Shake The Faith for a while, but they're now gone as
well, I think. Aimee Mann from 'Til... has a group (called Aimee Mann)
which includes ex 'Tues. drummer Mike Hausmann & they have new vinyl on
    the way March '93.
Does anyone know what happened to the Modes ? Did they ever record?
I think they were from Malden or Medford area around 1984-1986. Solid
    songs & great harmonies.
How about Circus, & Manitoba (Leominster area), The Rings (Limbo Race),
The Outlets (one album then oblivion), The Lifters, & about 10,000
    others ? -Paul

New England put out 2 albums, the self titled debut containing the
"hits", "Don't Ever Want To Lose You" & "Nothing To Fear". Their
drummer, Hirsch Gardner works (as a drum instructor & studio guy) for
Daddy's Junky Music, I think. Todd Rundgren produced their first album.

On NPR's Freshair yesterday I heard a review of a new album out by a
Boston band called Morphine. The album is called "Cure for Pain". The
reviewer described them asa 3-piece band consisting of baritone sax,
2-string bass and drums. Throughout the review parts of different tracks
were played. These guys have a really cool sound. The bari and the bass
work out some very compelling riffs. The sound is quite original. I was
    truly impressed.

    Anyone heard these guys?

121.136MorphineTECRUS::ROSTFuzzbox VoodooTue Jan 25 1994 16:1021
Where ya been Ron, these guys have been a round for a few years now,
their first album "Good" came out in 91 or 92 on Accurate/Distortion
    (wotta great label name).

The bassist/composer/singer is Mark Sandman who was also in Treat Her
Right. He uses only two strings on the bass (tuned in fifths for power
chords) and a *bottleneck*. The saxophonist (name escapes me now) has
ties with the Boston modern jazz scene (I think he had been
Either/Orchestra). They switched drummers just before recording the
new album for Ryko; Billy Conway of Treat Her Right had been the
original drummer, he left but since came back.

Anyway, these guys used to play free every Tuesday night in Cambridge
in 91 and 92. When they are in town, Sandman sometimes plays at the
Plough and Stars in Camnbridge under the name "Mark Sandman Supergroup"
which is Mark and whomever else he happens to invite down.

These guys are highly recommended to those who are looking for
something a little different in their rock diet.

somewhere in this note i think there is mention of a band that used to
play in the Framingham, MA. area in the 70's...they were called the
"Incredible Two Man Band"...or ITMB for short....i noticed in the paper
that ITMB will be playing this weekend at the the El Morocco in
Worcester and wondered if the band I remembered as ITMB is the same one
in the advertisement.....did anyone else see this and/or does anyone
know if this is the band that i think it is??...i remember them being
great (course the entire 70's are a little hazy but...)and would love to
go check them out to see if my memory serves......any info.........../k

Has anyone heard of Agona Hardison? I guess she sold out the
House of Blues in Cambridge a couple of weeks ago. The Globe
had an article and a picture of her announcing her CD release.

I guess she's an R&B type artist, similar to Bonnie Raitt.

I happened to speak with her about 2 years ago at Acton Music
and she mentioned beginning to record so I guess it's finally
    	out. She's from Stow, btw.

I was there. The music (to me) seemed bland with all the songs kinda
blending into one another. Great voice and stage presence but the HoB's
oversold the show and it was quite crowded.
Paul Geary (of extreme fame) is handling her to some extent.
