402.0. "Bruce Hornsby" by REGENT::WOODWARD (I'll put this moment...here) Fri Apr 09 1993 12:16

Last night, I caught a couple of new songs from Bruce
Hornsby on WBOS. I was thrilled to hear he has a new
album! It's called "Harbor Lights." This album is his
first without "the range." Instead he has help from
other artists, such as Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Garcia, and
Phil Collins (?). The two songs I heard from the album
    sound great.

I've been a fan of BH and the Range since their first
album. Bruce plays the piano like no one else.
I've been able to catch their concerts in Boston (at
the Orpheum a long time ago), Denver, and Great Woods.

I'm anxious to pick up his new album (which was recorded
    at his home).

Not surprising to see Jerry Garcia on his album. He toured with the

together; at different times, too... 8^) I love his music/style.

402.6Harbor Lights Is Great!REGENT::WOODWARDI'll put this moment...hereFri Apr 23 1993 15:2027
I listened to Bruce Hornsby's "Harbor Lights" last
night and all I can say is WoW! This is one
exciting piece of work, probably the most creative
and energetic stuff that he's ever done. It's
jazzy, with lots of horns, guitar, and piano.
Bruce is accompanied by jazz greats like Pat
Metheny and Branford Marsalis. The combination of
         these talents is amazing.

In past albums, jazz didn't play a major role,
even though Bruce often said that the likes of
Keith Jarrett influenced him. This album allows
Bruce to do what he does best. He is a wonder at
the piano, as evidenced in his song "What a Time."

"Harbor Lights" does include a couple songs that
sound like his past work. "The Tide will Rise"
with Bonnie Raitt, is probably going to be one of
         his more commercially popular songs.

Bruce made the right decision is taking a different
	 approach with his latest work.

    agree!

i forgot what tape was in the car and had to look
at the box. it was so jazzy. i couldn't figure out
who it was without looking. there is some of the ore
usual hornsby stuff, but the jazzy stuff knocked me
    out.

I just got Harbor Lights (for Father's Day) and it is exceedingly good.
Very very good. In fact, it's a great album. All but maybe 2 tracks are
as good if not better than the title track.

This album is significantly different from his other work in that he
explores areas of jazz and R&B that seem to have influenced his previous
work but have not been brought to the forefront until now. It's a
piano-bass-drums trio with guest artists like Pat Metheny, Branford
    Marsallis and Jerry Garcia.

The songwriting is a very fused style bringing to mind what Becker and
Fagen often did in their Steely Dan work, building a song out of a few
jazz turnarounds. Strong hooks. It's obvious that he had a great time
writing, producing and recording this one in his brand new home studio.

The solo breaks are nicely improvised, sometimes stretched out, gems. In
his piano playing one hears the influence of McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett
and Bill Evens, though I would have wondered about this last one had he
not mentioned it in the liner notes. Hornsby is much more musically
astute than his previous albums with the Range would indicate and this
album seems intended for musicians as much as anyone else.

The problem I have right now is that I can't stop playing it. I
    recommend it.

On last night's TV tribute to "the Great" Atheletes, He did
Lennon's "Imagine" in tribute to the late Arthur Ashe. I
found it amazingly humorous that this song that preaches
Socialism was performed while many politicians, including
    	President Clinton, listened teary-eyed...

"Imagine there's no countries" "Imagine no possessions"...

Back to Bruce - kinda thought that performance was a bit lame.
But his new stuff does sound great!

     FWIW,

Bruce H. was on cable last night..don't know the channel. Format was
him on grand and synth, drummer, bass, additional keyboard player..with
added horns/backup singers on the vocal numbers. What struck me was
that when I first came across him while channel-fiddling, I didn;t know
who he was. Here's this guy burning up the ivory in a very hip, very
competent manner, displaying serious improvisional skills. Wow. He's
GOOD, I thought. Then comes the singing. Good there, as well.

I could be persuaded to buy his (new?) album if this is the stuff he's
into. He's the best (ie, skilled, trained, etc) performer I've seen in
a while. It's no wonder he *thoroughly* enjoys playing. 3 thumbs up!

    Rick,

The show is called Center Stage and it's on every Monday night from 9:00 to
10:00 on WGBH (Boston). I also caught Hornsby and as you, I thought here
is one talented piano player, great stuff. I picked up his new CD Last
night and the CD is alot like his one hour concert. It has a very Jazzy
feel thru-out, with guests, Bonnie Rait, Brandford Marsalis and others.
    I's buy it again.

I met Bruce Hornsby 3 years ago, in April 91 when he was playing at the
Earth Day concert in Foxboro MA. I volunteered at the concert and was
able to catch Bruce & Jackson Browne doing their warm up (I was sittin'
in the first row). When BH was done, one of the other volunteers
called him down to the edge of the stage and he just gabbed with us.
He talked about coming from Virginia, and how his Grandmother looked
at his hands one day and said "Honey, you were born to play the piano".
So, his Grandmother or Grandfather (I can't remember which one) had
taught him how to play the piano at a very young age (3 maybe?).

He also mentioned that he & Jerry Garcia are very good friends, and BH
likes to jam with them whenever he gets the chance. He is often seen
at GD concerts playing with the band.

All-round nice guy that Bruce Hornsby & a great entertainer.

Bruce has a new CD out, called "Hot House" I haven't heard the whole
thing yet, but what I've heard I like alot. It's done in the same style
as "Harbor Lights"... lots of jazzy tunes and lots of talented
performers accompanying him. I think he's found his niche.

I have the CD... it's quite nice. Very groove oriented. Although
it takes no chances, whatsoever; it's a very "safe" record, and
for that reason, ultimately unremarkable. Pretty much like the
    rest of Bruce's records...

Wonder if "Hot House" is a reference to the Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie
  classic of '45...

I think from the same session as "Groovin' High" and "Dizzy Atmosphere", 2
titles Steely Dan fans will recognize... (What a turning point that was
  for music.) - Jay

Nope, that's the reference I was thinking of. I simply assume every
Steely Dan fan knows Pretzel Logic backwards and forwards. 8)
[I guess as a Bird/Diz fan, and knowing something of Fagen's background,
the reference didn't seem so oblique to me...] - Jay
