I've listened to it twice and the last 3 tracks should be all over the radio
within the next few weeks (Tears in Heaven is already a largely played track
on the radio.WBCN,WBOS,WZLX,WAAF 4 very different formatted stations play it)

The stand out track is "Don't Know Which Way To Go". IMO

The 1st seven tracks are very nice (don't know how it relates to the movie, have
not seen it yet) bluesy to sweet melodies.

It must clearly be painful for him to do but the little bit I
heard it has to do with expectations and love for his son.
At this point in his career I don't think press agent pressures
would rule his life. I've always given him credit for packing
it in with the Yardbirds when "For Your Love" hit as it was
not what he was looking for. I still enjoy the song but in
restrospective the song was marked for the masses at the time
and had far less to do with Eric's blues appreciation (so the
stroy goes / one person's intreperation).

Clapton isn't really going to be "talking about his son's death" tonight.
He's appearing on MTV's show 'Unplugged', which is an hour-long show
that features artists playing acoustic instruments only.

Clapton will be performing a couple songs he wrote specifically about his
son's death (namely "Tears I Heaven" and "The Day The Circus Left Town"),
but there's no conversation about the event (as far as I know). Other songs
he'll be performing include "Running On Faith", "Before You Accuse Me",
"Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", and a very "different" version
of "Layla".

It sounded like Clapton wants to do this again. In the talk between
the songs he said he really liked playing acoustic because he could
change the tone and volume of his voice to get the right feeling for
    the song.

Also a bit he said about the death of his son: he felt that if he
hadn't written songs about his loss, he would not be sharing his grief
with his fans, who would probably want to shed a tear for him.

I hope he'll take a hint from Paul McCartney and put this out on cd.
There's obviously more to the show than what was broadcast (like a
couple of tunes that faded to commercials).

The circus song really got to me. I remember reading in a NYC
newspaper that the police report said his son ``jumped out of the
window in an attempt to immitate the circus performers''. Guess
the poor little tyke was tumbling around the house and fell out
of the window. He was such a cute little kid too, it was such
a shame for that accident to happen to him so young and all.

I think Eric is such a strong person, he will carry on somehow.

Running on Faith sounded really good too. And I don't understand
why the papers said Andy Fairweather-low wasn't any good. I
    though he was ok.

I have to agree with Pat in .51. The acoustic version was nice and fit
the show. In addition, I believe EC said that because Layla was so
riff oriented the original version would not fit an acoustic show. He
also said he wanted to set the song to a shuffle.

Taking into consideration the time that has elapsed since Layla was
released and the differences in Pattie's and EC's relationship I think
it would be very difficult if not impossible for Eric to reach the
emotional level Derick and the Dominoes displayed on Layla disc.

No, August 18th is the date for the show at Foxboro with Elton John.

I THINK YOUR BASIC POINT IS WELL-TAKEN and I am not arguing that EC
(and many many other musicians) benefit/benefitted from the able and
sometimes unrewarded assistance of others in writing, producing,

What strikes me is that by the time Layla was released, EC was already
a legend --- and then some --- for 3-5 years, depending on continent.
(I think a 'younger' audience associates EC with Layla. Some of us
    would associate earlier works.)

Re .68, .69:

Yes to both points. It's weird to see people like Eric achieve "legend" status as
a result of stuff that, in the ears of many, are *far* surpassed by earlier,
less universally applauded works.

"I Shot the Sheriff?" "You Look Wonderful Tonight?" Yecccch!

I associate EC's shift in focus with Rod Stewart's. In Eric's case, I find little
post-Cream stuff that I can tolerate, much less like (Layla is an exception). In
Rod's, the same holds for post-Beck work. Sure seems like a durned shame to me-
but then, a lot of listeners apparently *like* what they're doing now.

Guess I'll go back to my own planet...

Given the improvisatory nature of rock arrangements, I can only shake
my head.. this is news ?? An artist recruits top-of-the-line session
guys, renowned for *writing/improvising* their own parts, and they do
it, and have done it, and continue to do it.

Most rock musicians don't score/arrange their own material.. and the
    'score' often looks like

    Em | Bm-D# | Em | % | Am | % | C-Am | F-G | etc.

Does anyone whack Harrison for Clapton's considerable contribution to
"My Guitar Gently Weeps" ? Joe Cocker for depending on Leon Russell?
So Duane helped Eric get the right rhythm and tempo for what might have
been just a sketchy idea, and contributed a major chunk of the guitar
lines.. that's the game, the basic composition was still EC's but the
arrangement should've been credited to the band.

Personally I find the piano ending to Layla to be a note-for-note
ripoff of "More", from the cult film 'Mondo Cane'.. try it - next time
you hear the end of Layla, sing "..Longer than Always is a Long, Long
Time, and far beyond forever, you'll be mine.."

    **Sigh**

I did not "whack" Clapton. And I did not mention any of this as
a "revelation" or even news, really.

Sure, Clapton gave Harrison quite a boost on "While My Guitar
Gently Weeps." However, George's membership in the Beatles
is what made him a "household" word, not "While...Weeps."

Once again, my point is, the pretty piano part helped Clapton
gain a larger, middle-of-the-road audience than he would have
gained had the song been just the rock portion.

And, in fact, in some markets it was released without the piano
coda. History shows that it had a much greater "shelf life"
        with the coda.

Sure, the contributions of session musicians is not new or unusual.
However, if you play an instrument, you know there's a big
difference between contributing to an existing chord progression
or writing the progression. That piano ending was more than a lick
or two, it was a composition in its self. Perhaps it was a stolen
composition, I don't know. But it gave Clapton a bigger boost than
"Lay Down Sally" or "White Room" were ever going to, at least
in terms of general WIDESPREAD recognition.

In actuality, Eric doesn't write that much of his material at all, so "Layla"
is not an exception, its more the rule. While Eric certainly does write
some stuff, a lot of his material comes either from outside writers-for-hire
(Jerry Lynn Williams in particular is a favorite) or old classic blues songs
("Before You Accuse Me", "Crossroads", "Have You Ever Loved A Woman", "Nobody
Knows You When You're Down And Out", etc, etc.).

Its not like we're talking about EC as a great songwriter (even though I think
he has written some great songs, which is not the same thing). For the most
part, he's best know for his guitar playing, and for being a strong interpretor
of other people's material. IMO, his songwriting is somewhere down the ladder
of his accomplishments anyways.....

I'm really confused... I can't recall any really serious heavy hits
(or great works) that EC is known for THAT HE WROTE. Most of it was
written by obscure bluesmen (not obscure to blues fans), and by the
team of Jack Bruce and Pete Brown and sometimes Felix Pappalardi.

And everyone knows he's not a piano player!

I am not trying to join in the bashing. I understood your original
point. If you think of all of the personalities in show business that
have profited from the work of others, it occurs to me that, of all
performers, Eric Clapton is reputed to be one of the most humble and
one of the least self-serving, especially when you consider just how
talented he is, and for how long he has been world-class famous, and
    the tragedies and addictions, etc.

Saying that the piano coda to "Layla" --- someone else's solo in
someone else's arrangement --- is what EC famous is like saying...
    well, it's been said before.

Two obvious songs that EC write - "Wonderful Tonight" (arguably his biggest

don't get confused over chart success being a measure of quality music.
Lennon/McCartney wrote most of their hits in the name of that next

wrote some fine music. Tin Pan Alley was really more a mind-set than

I have a John Fogerty (sp?..but you know him, the guy who used to
play with CCR) songbook that says JF wrote ``Before You Accuse Me''.
This is the same song Eric does, and Eric credits it to the correct
    writer.

You never know who gets credited correctly because sometimes they put
one name on the album and one on the songbook (thinking it was a JF
ARRANGEMENT, for example). this would give reason to sue.

It's such a mess. But one thing I DO know is that Eric has always
been giving credit to people when they deserve it. he's done entire
interviews where he talks about blues musicians instead of coming out
and saying ``Have you heard MY latest song....''

Also, I think his songwriting is pretty good. Although he's changed

When I saw the 2nd part of his unplugged I understood why they had cut
Rollin' and a Tumblin' from the first part. Although I thoroughly
enjoyed it, I had a good laugh. It's a tricky vamp when played properly.
During his solo, the band was having a hell of a time with the time.
Then the percussionist flipped the beat on the tamborine for a measure
or two and really spun everyones head around. Clapton laughed, gave
him a look like "I told you not to dare do that!" and promptly exited
the solo to bring everyone back into the pattern. Having been mezmerized
by that rythm on many occasions, I howled.

    Great stuff on that Unplugged.

I've only been to Grate Woods once this year, but at Buffett they had large

of the lawn a better viewing location than the extreme back of the pavillion.

Well, yes and no. If it's raining, under the ``hood'' you are dry.
And, if you have pavilion seats and it's a nice nite, you can always
get up and walk around and stand on the lawn for a time. There's
nothing stopping you from going backwards (ie from seats to lawn)
but you can't go fowards (and steal seats).

I've haven't been there this year yet, and the Clapton show will
be my one and only venture into the great woods. I really think
that place has a tin roof, and I'd had lawn seats many times, I

change in the set list from (.93) the opening show in Dallas on

    RE: .55

It is "Tears in Heaven" which is on the ERIC CLAPTON UNPLUGGED
album/CD. Eric wrote this song as a way to deal with the
death of his 5 year old son - who fell out of a Manhattan
    apartment window. So tragic!

I saw the entire "unplugged" video - on MTV - which not only
showed the taping but an interview with Eric as well. He said
he couldn't believe that song was such a hit - as he wrote/sang
it to help him grieve over the loss of his son.

The entire "unplugged" CD is fabulous. Made a tape of it for
my car stereo - and play it all the time. A couple of his
songs "Layla" and "Alberta" - and another one about 'san

Clapton co-wrote it with Will Jennings, who has written a number of
truly great tunes with and for the likes of Steve Winwood, Roy Orbison,
and Don Henley to name a few. His tune "In The Real World" that Orbison
recorded on the "Mystery Girl" LP just before his death is simply

Did anyone see "Rocumentary" last night on MTV? It was a fabulous
spot interviewing Eric Clapton and going back to his early days of
    recording.

I was mesmarized by him - and loved his sense of humor, genuine
sense of humility and extraordinary talent. The moderator(s)
asked him what he thought of the "Beano" album - the first album
he recorded (when he was 20) and he said that although he's been
told many times that it is his "best" - he seemed to think it
    was all hype.

The pictures of him playing with John Lennon, BB King, Steve
Winwood and others ... was fabulous to say the least!

Also - he briefly discussed the song "Layla". Apparantly he fell
madly in love with - and the band was totally consumed with this
love affair - Patti Harrison - the wife of George Harrison of the
Beatles. Apparantly Patti and George had temporarily split up and
after/during the affair she went back to George. Nothing was said
about what happened - and or where Patti is today.

George, Patti and Eric actually recorded "Bye Bye Love" together during
this period. I believe this was also about the time that Eric played
guitar on George's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

130.165ICS::ANDERSON_MWed Oct 28 1992 14:3317
    Wow, he married her?

His new (slower) rendition of "Layla" is so beautiful. I'll have to
watch it more closely - see if he still gets emotional over the whole
    thing.

Funny you mentioned he married her - as I asked my daughter last
night (while we were watching the program) if he had ever married and
she didn't know. We were aware, however, that he was not married to
the woman with whom he had his son...who died. Was Patti his "only"
wife and does he have any other children?

He looks remarkably good for someone who abused drugs and alcohol -
I wasn't aware that he had a severe heroin addiction.

I guess this should go in the "I Just Don't Get It" note; Clapton is
one of my favorite artistes and Layla is right up there as a song, but,
as a former/retread folkie and acoustic blues fan, I don't see what the
big deal is with "playing the 45 of Layla at 33.3 rpm"..... it's a
    snooze, I agree.

Half the music I listen to is "unplugged", so no big deal. This
version doesn't compete in the world market unless you're detoxing from
    metal. ;7)

If you want to hear what Layla SHOULD sound like in slo-mo, check out
John Fahey's version on his "Rain Forests... and Other Things" CD that
came out probably 10 years ago. (Fahey is credited as being Leo
Kottke's mentor.) It is an instrumental.

In an article in Rolling Stone earlier this past year, Clapton said
that he and George are both still friends with Patti, even though
neither is married to her anymore. I think that's sort of neat. I
remember seeing a picture of her taken at his son's funeral.
(Unfortunately, judging by the photo it didn't look as though she had
weathered the years quite as gracefully as he has. But, maybe it was
just a bad picture. She was a model when George first met her, on the
set of A Hard Day's Night, I think.)

Someone told me an anecdote about Eric Clapton a little while ago, that
I didn't especially like, though. A roommate of my daughter's
boyfriend, had managed to get backstage passes for a concert that
included both Elton John and Clapton sometime in the past year. This
particular kid played the guitar and had idolized Clapton for a long
time, but he got backstage just in time to hear Clapton curtly refuse
to give any autographs or talk to any fans, and walk out the door
without a backward glance. Elton John, on the other hand, signed
autographs and chatted with fans for a long time. The kid was really
dissapointed. I, also, compare that with the fact that my daughter and
her boyfriend managed to chat with Bono 8 different times outside the
Four Seasons Hotel this past Aug., plus getting several autographs and
photos of Bono & The Edge. They considered themselves pretty lucky
compared to the kid who wanted Clapton's autograph!

I've been an EC fan for a long time. Even met him in '67. I listened to
a lot of his work. Now that doesn't make my opinion any more valid than
anyone else's but from my perspective I would say that having recently
gone back and listened to the Mayall Bluesbreakers LP after several
decades, his guitar work on this album is if not his best then equal to
anything he's done since. And as far as I'm concerned, there ain't but a
few things that approach it. I don't blame him for not wanting to
acknowledge that though. Who wants to admit that their best is behind
    them?

Also, I have never been able to listen to the original Layla through to
the end as I find it to be one of the most irritating recordings he's
    done.

...I'm a bit disappointed about the autograph story because when I
watched the "Rocumentary" spot on MTV he alluded to the fact that
when he was young he had "heros" in the music industry - which
    helped to shape his career.

Not bragging - just setting up this story. I have two brothers,
one is a professional drummer in Branson, Missouri and the other
one played in numerous bands and taught guitar lessons for years.
His son, Zachary (age 5) is extremely talented and can play
the drums, the guitar and is now attempting to learn the
saxaphone. His idol is Eric Clapton. He literally stands in
front of the VCR - imitating Eric - to the point that his watch
has to be on the same wrist as Erics' ... he knows all the words to his
songs and even moves his body the way Eric does. When asked - he says
he wants to grow up like Eric - and will perform anywhere, anytime and
    in front of anyone!

I wrote to Eric and told him about my nephew and how he is Zachary's
hero (mentor) and would he be kind enough to send me an autographed
photo ... that it would be a thrill of a lifetime for Zach.

	another 2 cents:

I find the alter-version of Layla to be an interesting reinterpretation
of the tune. I thought it was cool for Clapton to take his 21-year-old and
now somewhat shopworn anthem in a new direction. Not merely a slowed-down
retread of the original, the melody has been changed in addition to the
rhythm to create the whole new feel. If I had never heard the original, I'd
still have liked this new version.

If he wrote it for Patti, why did he call it Layla, does anyone know ?
I hope this question brings more Eric/George/Patti stories, I enjoyed
this note a lot the past week.

In North America it is a rare name, but where I come from Layla (Leyla)
is a very common/traditional/popular girl's name. I am curious to know
why he picked that name, (especially for a song which was meant for
"Patti") because Layla (Leyla) is very close to my name and when I was
a teenager I had a very close friend named Leyla and because our names
were very similar and because we were hanging around together all the
time, people would confuse our names and call me Leyla and call her
Lale, which used to drive us crazy.

By the way, another vote for the unplugged version, I just love that
    song.

I got to thinking about the pro's/con's for the original and unplugged
    version of "layla".

Perhaps the original cut evoked more passion, fire and intensity
because he was madly in love with her. In his interview (on
Rockumentary) he said that not only was HE in love with her ... but
the entire band got caught up in the entire affair. They all loved
performing the song and emotions ran very high.

Eric's new version is much slower, deliberate, mellow - perhaps he
sings the song with warm memories of their relationship - as
opposed to the the passion he once felt for her.

    Just an observation.

Let it Grow, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and Promises are also

I had Time Pieces Vol I at one time, but now have all of EC's stuff

    Rita Mae
    Catch Me if You Can
    Blues Power

Some of my more obscure favorites:

Watch out for Lucy (Backless)
Next time you see her (Ocean Blvd)
Tangled in love (Behind the sun)
Black Summer Rain (No reason to cry)
Presence of the Lord (Blind Faith)
Heaven is One step away (Crossroads)

He did the music to the Lethal Weapon movies (at least the first two), along
with David Sanborn. I think the movie you're mentioning was a British
production, maybe for TV only. I don't know if it's released in the U.S.
or not (and I'm not sure of the title either).

Personally, I'd rate Timepieces Vol 2 at the bottom.

I also liked "Just One Night" as much as if not more than "24
Nights" Both are tops.

My order would be: 1. 24 Nights
                      Just One night
                   2. Rainbow Concert
                   3. Timepieces

Your mileage may vary....

Incidentally, I found a EC track called "Fight" (w/ the Bee Gees singing
backup) on the Olympic Album from 4 years ago that is a really
great cut.

In the MTV "Rockumentary", I believe they use some material from
a British TV production called "Edge Of Darkness", if my memory serves
me right. I have an import 12" EP of the instrumental music from that
show... it's just Clapton with Michael Kamen. It was the first of his
    instrumental soundtrack work I'd heard.

Some of my all-time favorite Clapton guitar work is on the Roger
Waters' "Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking" CD. David Sanborn also played
great on that album-- that may have been the first time they worked
together, I'm not sure. The two of them are definately the best thing
    about that album.

I just don't get Unplugged. I've been an Eric Clapton fan for many years
but that album does absolutely nothing for me.

If anyone other than Clapton had recorded a lounge lizard version of
Layla, they would be the laughing stock of the industry.

As far as Tears in Heaven, I must have heard it six or seven times on
the radio before I realized who and what I was listening to. I thought
it was just another innocuous, here-today-gone-tomorrow pop song.

Are my brain cells fossilizing? Shudder.

Barry

regarding the repeated characterization of the Unplugged Layla as a
    lounge lizard version:

To me, this statement implies the taking the original version and
dramatically "toning it down", which I would argue is definitely not the
case. The Unplugged version is a completely new and original treament of
the song and thank god for that. I have no feelings for the original
version other than I never cared to listen to it all the way through. To
me it's becomes tedeous immediately following the intro (like two bars
into the first verse). I've also always felt that it marked the start of
    Clapton's long slide downhill.

I think the new version is very listenable although I wouldn't buy an
album for it. Comparing it to the first version is folly, apples and
    oranges.

Anyway, for my money, if you want Clapton at his best, listen to Fresh
Cream and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers Featuring Eric Clapton. There's a
lot to be said for what an artist produces during those hungry years.

I bought "Unplugged" and have almost worn it out. I had "Tears in Heaven" on
"Rush" but bought "Unplugged" for "Layla" which I first heard on a transatlantic
flight and simply had to have. Now I can listen to both on the same album.

I think this album is what has really awakened me to Clapton whom I never thought
much of before. I love the way the unplugged albums let you really listen to
the artist.

I hope he wins a truck load of Grammies.

I've heard him get that tone out of Blackie, on "Forever Man" for

anything else. Also, that live track he did for the Dylan tribute was
more along that line as was his guitar sound on the track he did for the
Curtis Mayfield album. I think it's more a matter of him putting that

    Experience at local (Worcester Ticketmaster).

Two women at front of line, go in at 9:55. Stay in for about 10
minutes. Next person in line, can only get tickets for 'B' seats, next
10-12 people get crappy seats. Show sold out at 10:12 AM, 12 minutes
    after opening.

Now, this is the kicker. Two women are selling tickets outside the
record store but inside mall, for $100 a piece! First three sections,
and they have a stack of 25 tickets in their hand. No-one at this
ticketmaster was able to get better than 3rd tier seats, most were
    shut out all together.

This is obviously criminal behavior, but who can stand against
Ticketmaster and their crooked outlets? (Mall security was called
and pursued, but only about the solicitation inside the mall.

I tried the phone route for a change a pace and the same old sad
story!! I finaly get through at 10:20 (a world record for me) and I'm
thinking that I should be able to get at least 2 tickets but they were
all gone!! Something has to be done about how tickets are distributed.

I suggest that no ticket agency outside of 50 miles from the arena
should be able to sell tickets. That would prevent all the
ticketMUGGERS in NY, NJ, Maine etc.. from selling seats to local
    shows!!!!!

Well, back to the album. I picked it up and not only is it not a
disappointment, it's much better than I excpected. Anyone who thought
that EC had lost it should be pleasantly surprised to hear the abandon
that he plays with on this release. He certainly surprises the hell out
of me on numerous occassions. And anyone that think this is just an
album of 12-bars will also be surprisd.

Glad you got it. Tore Down is a killer; Groanin' the Blues is

Heard "Five Long Years" on the radio yesterday; as Ron suggests, what
I've been hearing exceeds expectations (and mine were high to begin with).
This particular track sounded rawer than what we've come to expect from Eric.
I gotta have this disc; soon.

Fred, if you want to do tunes from the new Clapton album I think we
    can work out an agreement:

All of Clapton's tunes are "the blues tune" or "the I-IV-V tune". Only
    the lyrics change.

If it would make you happy to sing the lyrics from the new songs over
those tunes instead of the lyrics Clapton used on earlier albums feel
    free.

Heck, I probably won't even notice.

    Even more ;-)'s.

Saw Clapton on Monday night and Jerry Portnoy was AMAZING. Our
seats 5th row just left of center stage. The entire show from
opening act Jimmy Vaughn through the 2 encores that Eric did was
excellent. They had hung large screens from the rafters on both
sides of the stage and had camera men doing close-ups on Eric and
Jerry most of the time. Vaughn came out on the 2nd encore and did
a great rendition of "Sweet Home Chicago". The entire night was a
tribute to the blues greats with the screens flashing pictures of
Bessie Smith, Elmore James, Ray Charles, and Sam and Dave as Clapton
was playing their classics.

Great versions of "Ain't nobody's business", "Crossroads",
"Cross-Cut Saw", and "Have you ever loved a woman".

Fifth time I've seen Clapton and this rates as one of the best ever.

Does anyone know of an E-Mail address where you can subscribe to some
type of on-line magazine for information on Clapton? I belong to one
for Springsteen and it is great. Once subscribed, you get daily info
on tour dates, ticket sales, up and coming releases, frequently asked
question ect. All you have to do is to send a command request to the
E-Mail address (in the case of the Springsteen one it is "subscribe")
and then an auto reply will send you all the info on what stuff you can
ask questions on ect. I was told that there is a similar one for Clapton.
It would be great if there was, especially since his blues tour went so
well that he is planning a tour again. Any one out there heard of it?
