I dont know how you can really say that... look at bad company, they
have alot of material that sounds the same lately, and take u2
they are the worst right about now. I have gigged out I know how hard it
is to do other peoples stuff ...more or less write own. Without going down
a rat hole of anything its hard to write your own stuff, and bring out
things that you want to tell people about.. Along those lines I think
Charlie has done a hell of a job.. Music is a hard job.

I will gladly defend Chaz here, whether he's around or not.

I don't believe that *anyone* deliberately tries to write "formula"
music. Most of what I hear people call "formula" is what defined the
    formula in the first place.

In the case of Farrenhiet, Charlie wears his influences on his sleeve,
no doubt about it. On the other hand, I see some very eclectic elements
in those influences: jazz, blues, R&B. No formula, just grade-A Charlie
    Farren.

I can't imagine what I could gain by "brown-nosing" Charlie and I think
most people would say the same. Hwoever, I think that being somewhat
"respectful" is in order. We've bashed our share of artists in here,
and, except for one other person who I once showed the conference to,
we've had fairly limited brushes with "fame". I think most people
enjoy knowing that a band they really like can take a voyeristic peep
at their tributes. So what? And if you don't like Farrenheit, what
would be the point of bashing them in here? Charlie is what he is, and
we get the music that Charlie gives us. In the final analysis, we have
nothing to do with whatever music that is. As fans, all we can do is
reinforce the fact that regardless of the slings and arrows of
outrageous musical fortune that may come Charlie's way, that we're
    behind him.

    RE: .22

I think you're attempting to bait Charlie "out of hiding". Like anyone,
he has the right to participate in this conference at whatever level he
desires. I think it is unfair use "bashing", however mild, as bait.

I have liked Farrenheit before a) I could remember the name of the
group, and b) before I knew that Charlie was even a DECcie. I just
heard them and liked the sound...the harmonies, the TUNES.

I just feel bad that I FINALLY get everything down pat, and FINALLY get
a copy of FARRENHEIT (which, if I'm not careful, I just might play to
    death)...and "Farrenheit" is no more.

    RE: ELF -

When an employee receives the involuntary termination package, they
remain as employees for 9 weeks following notification. This is
because of legal reasons, however in actuality, they are no longer
working at DEC, and have no access to computer resources in DEC.
ELF will still reflect these folks as employees for a couple of
months after they've basically been gone.

When my wife took the buyout, it took about 3 1/2 months before her
name finally disappeared from ELF. Another friend who got the tap
in August stayed listed in ELF until December.

I don't put much faith in ELF. I know of someone who was fired, not

I was at the show Friday night. Pretty raucus Farrenheit show. I was
stage right near the PA and whooooo boy... Holmsey's leslie sound is
still ringing in my ears!!!! Excellent show though... Kinda missed the
extended Charlie Farren "acoustic" set, but what do you want for a
class-A band relegated to a disco with a "best butt" competition?

At one point Charlie asked me between songs if I knew "Wendy" of
Wendy-O music noter's fame. I said no, I had never had the pleasure,
and looked over in the direction he was pointing. After the show, I
walked over to the person I thought Chaz was pointing to and asked her
if she was Wendy. She said "no" and looked at me like I owed her serious
money... So I guess I *still* haven't had the pleasure. Oh well, great
    show anyway.

it was from the snare or what) Too loud to tell what it was :*)

One suggestion for any future shows; or any band who have "acoustic"
arrangements that they play during a show:

Make sure your drummer loosens the snares !

During "Impossible World", the snare drum was buzzing away very loudly in
    the background.

As for the current Farrenheit line-up, well there's Charlie Farren, of
course, on guitar and vocals, Dave Heit on bass, Robert Holmes on
guitar (former 'Til Tuesday), Robin Farren on backing vocals and Mike
(mumble mumble) on drums. I don't remember his name, but he sure is a
great drummer. More of an in-your-face rock drummer than Muzz, but
definitely a great player. Muzz was more sublte, the new guy is like a
pile driver, but he was great for a band that seems to be showing more
of it's rock personality these days.

I'm not sure I'm supposed to do this, but here goes...

Farrenheit is apparently dead... although I'm sure the right offer
    would resurrect them.

But, Charlie Farren is back and I mean back with a vengence babies. I
was invited to one of his new "band's" test performances at an
out-of-the-way pub near his home ground. I was blown away. I have no
question this new group will be signed.

Basically, what we're talking about is Charlie's updated "90s" sound,
which is more-or-less acoustic. The new band consists of Charlie on
acoustic (but amplified) guitar and lead vox, sis Robin on backing
vocals (this lady really can sing hombres), a keyboard player who also
sings, a bass player (more on him later) and the one-and-only Muzz on
drums. Muzz is perfect for this group - he's a finesse drummer and
Farrenheit was heading in a direction that seemed a bit racous for his
style. The bass player uses a very unusual rig which consists of a
Hohner Steinberger L2 clone and a Yamaha MIDI keyboard controller. The
bass and keyboard are strapped together in a special metal harness. The
guy is a great player. Very tasty. And he has a nice baritone voice
    too.

This is a great looking group, by the way. Very Mtv friendly. I say
that not because it matters to me, but because I think it will work in
their favor when it comes to the record companies and public
    perception.

The music? Lots, and I mean LOTS of new stuff. Some of the Farrenheit
stuff has survived as well (Fool In Love, Lost in Loveland, and Dirty
Old Town, among others). About the only song that doesn't make it in
the new set is "Lost In Loveland". It's a great song, but it loses
something in the translation without that ballsy guitar.

I'll post more later, but in the meantime keep a look out for the
    Charlie...

The bass player is named Phil mumble...mumble... (obviously, I didn't

sort of ja rastah meets corn-rows style (Kinda like the guy from Silli
Manilli, except this guy has TALENT and I mean LOTS of it!!!!).

I figured the description might help people figure out who he is...
I've been out of the "scene" for a while putting together a new thang,
so I don't know if the guy's been gigging much locally or not.

    He's definitely a hot player.

If this is the guy I used to see playing *solo* bass in Park Street Under

have a band and a sound built around him.

One point that I forgot to mention in the reply about Charlie Farren's
    new band...

Charlie is now using his voice to full potential. He's one of the best
singers in rock (ever) in my opinion (I know he doesn't listen here
anymore, so I'm not kissing his ass when I say this). Farrenheit, on
record, used his voice pretty well. Live? Not so well (my opinion, of
course). When you're playing clubs and you're singing through a double-
bin PA cab on either side of the stage, with Chaz using 6 4x12 cabs
for the guitar, Robert Holmes playing through one of every form of
amplifier (including a Leslie) ever built and Dave Heit playing through
6 or 8 2X15 cabs, a voice can get, shall we say, a bit lost in the mix.

I was amazed when we recorded the "Alpha Chip" video for DEC and I got
to solo Charlie's voice through the monitors when I mixed a version he
sang. Let me tell you, I was floored. I cannot describe the sensation
to you. The vocals he did were all *first take*, three layers, in
incredible harmony. Bing. Bang. Boom. Amazing...

Is the bass player's name Phil Madison? We did a gig recently with a

Brian is not exagerating regarding Charlie's vocals. In my personal,
subjective opinion, the vocals that he did with no effort for this
track go way beyond what he shows on disk with Farrenheit, and
certainly with JPP. This implies to me that the new material, on which
I assume he DOES have the time to put in some effort, should be awfully
    hot.

And it was 3.5 takes to do 3 tracks, but Brian was too busy being blown
away at the console to count proerly...

Just in case anyone was wondering, this new line-up is not a big
departure from the sound of the original solo/acoustic thing. The
keyboards and bass are not very prominent; they just add some fullness.

Robin passed out photocopies of the set list, there were 24
songs!...and only one that I may not have cared to hear again, and
    again...

I agree with the previous comment on the look of the band...of course
in this case, the looks are definitely subservient to the talent!

A quick review: Charlie Farren at Ovations, 10/17/92

Charlie was supposed to be the third act of the evening, just prior to
Aimee Mann, but Aimee cancelled. The first band (I forgot their name)
was fine, playing all originals with a style that I would describe as
Aretha Franklin meets Van Halen. Young, but with potential. The
second act was a 60's throwback band, three piece (bass, drums,
acoustic guitar) that lost the audience quickly, and went downhill from
there. They obviously sensed this in ending their set early, to no
    objections...

Charlie played solo, and acoustic. This crowd has his from the start,
and he went through a mix of Farrenheit material (Fool In Love,
Impossible World, Goofy Boy, Staying Together) and new material that
fit the acoustic style extremely well. A particular high point was
"Heart Thunder". Charlie's acoustic style was very reminiscent of
James Taylor, but both my wife and I agreed that Charlie showed more
energy, passion, and a sense of innocence that made the performance
    outstanding.

He was clearly enjoying the overwhelming positive response from the
crowd, despite having stated at the outset that he was a bit nervous
about playing solo and acoustic on a Saturday night in a rock club...

By his own assessment, he played nothing but "love songs" because
    "that's all there really is".

Although Aimee Mann was supposed to headline, it was very obvious that
this crowd was here to see Charlie rather than Aimee, as there was more of
a response for Charlie to keep playing near the end of his set than there
was when it was announced that Aimee would not be playing.

The final band was obviously a last minute replacement, and after two
mediocre cover songs (the "challenging" two-chord filler song "Can't
Always Get What You Want" by the 'Stones, and the "thrilling rocker"
Rocket Man by Elton John) we headed out.

    Cheers,
    Ken

re -1: << New cuts? Interview? On air banter?>>

    Yes, yes, & yes.

Harvey Warfield talked with Charlie and Muzz between two "musical
interludes". The first interlude included the ill-fated cut that
never did make it into the movie "The Living Daylights", and another studio
cut (from parts unknown by me) with Charlie singing lead. After some
update on the new band <Farren>, including comment on the obligatory current
lineup, upcoming gigs, and hotline number (see two notes back), Harvey
played two new <Farren> cuts, which both seriously cooked, titled
"Raise the Roof" and "Shaking the Chains" respectively. Both new songs
were very hot, particularly "Raise the Roof" (the intro seemed to
knock Harvey out of his chair!), and mark not as much a return to Rock,
as much as an evolution to a newer Rock. In any case, I liked what I
    heard.

I caught the show Friday night at Pavillion. The new material is very
strong, ranging from rock to funk to electric versions of some of the
acoustic set material. There were even two covers; one of the Motown
classic "Can't Get Next To You" that had a TOTALLY different, funkier
feel, and a very different version of "Gimmee Some Lovin'". The new
band sounded great. Philip Bynoe is an amazing Bass player, Robin
Farren sang solid backup (but she should get the courage to do even
    more), and Muzz is Muzz.

I finally got the chance to catch Charlie Farren's new group -=FARREN=-
at the Pavillion.

For openers, they had a band called "John Kite" which included
ex Farrenhite bassist plus 2 guitar players, drums & a female vocalist. They
did a sort of "neo-punk art-rock" (I hate labels) set which was punchy &
melodic & both singers reminded my of Patti Smith (on a good day). They
sounded similar to "The Leslie Spit Treeo" too, but no one's ever heard
of them. I found them very listenable & not at all what I'd expected for an
opening act in a club ... all originals, quasi-punk (I hate labels) except the
people could actually play. I'd definitely like to see them again.

By now everyone reading this must know Charlie's current line up, but
just in case: Charlie Farren, guitars & vocals; Robin (his sister) vocals;
John Muzzi (ex Farrenhite), drums; Phil Bynoe, bass, bass synth & vocals.

This band really kicks... Muzz's drumming (on a HUGE kit including one
of every kind of cymbal ever made & a bunch of "those tubular things") is as
crisp & sharp as ever & he was consistently energetic & creative throughout
both sets 'til closing time. Charlie, playing both guitar & guitar synth
through an array of (mostly) Rockman stuff, punched out innovative power chord
scales & confident high energy "blues derived" solos reminescent of "big arena"
players. Phil is a tremendous musician that handled a 5-stringed bass with a
guitar-shaped synth keyboard stapled to it with ease & precision. The vocals
were loaded with feeling texture & greatly enhanced by the the ability of
Robin & Charlie to sound nearly indistinguishable at times. The whole band
sounded very tight & together.

They all had a solid command of the stage (not to mention Charlie's
expert handling of his head band) & seemed to overflow with enthusiasm so often
that it felt like a stadium concert in a nightclub. The reportoire included a
couple old R&B favorites (I Can't Get Next To You & something else), a variety
of well written, well arranged new rock tunes, & some new solo acoustic stuff
that Charlie played in between sets which once again showcased his musical
depth & dynamite voice.

I expect this band to produce a really solid debut album in a few months
time (weather permitting), followed by a tour. If you can get a chance to see
them, do so. You won't be disappointed. They epitomize all the best of local
rock bands. Their "basement" tape is available also & it's a lot like their
live show. They have managed to put together a very refreshing combination of
songwriting, singing, playing & performing that stands out from the hundreds of
others competing for top promotion. The "right" record contract is all that's
needed now to make them a household word coast to coast.

See them if you can, or at least get the tape !

Speaking of Farrenheit CDs... the new tape, "Greasetown", has been
circulating at gigs. It contains some really cool new material that
Farren fans might be familiar with, including: Greasetown, Fashion,
Dirty Old Town, Love Street, and the awesome Animal Dance. I believe
this material will also be available soon on CD. Highly recommended.

Also, Dave Hull (aka Dave Heit) and Reeves Gabrel (Tin Machine,
Rubber Rodeo, etc.) have a new CD out under the name "Modern Farmers".
I haven't heard it yet, but I did spot it at Newbury's. Unfortunately,
I already had a bank account depleting stack of CDs in hand when I
noticed it, but it's definitely on the list for the next trip.
Gabrel always reminded me of Adrian Belew, which I consider a good
thing, and of course Dave Hull is a monster.

And to round things out, the venerable Muzz, besides his awesome work
with Farren, has been working with a Beatle cover band which features
Brad Delp (ex-Boston) on vocals. From what Muzz says, these guys do
amazingly accurate reproductions of the Beatles material. I think the
unveiling is scheduled for October 7th, somewhere on the North Shore
(forget where). I will get more details and post a follow up.

That should keep all you Farren/Farrenheit fans busy for a while...

As a recovering Catholic I can tell you that the old Catholic Missals used
to have the left page in Latin and the right page in the English translation
(or maybe it was vice versa). The part of the mass that (in Latin) went:

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

was translated on the English page as:

Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault

60.169MPGS::MARKEYThe politics of dancingMon Nov 14 1994 14:4032
    I was there...

The band was excellent. The "debut" gig was at a club called
"Bleachers" in Salem Mass. Brad Delp sings and plays acoustic
guitar, John Muzzy (from Farrenheit) plays drums, Joe (don't
know his last name) from the Fools plays bass, I think one
of the guitar players/keyboard player is from the Fools as
    well...

They play pretty much the entire Beatles catalog. The thing
that struck me was how Delp could do switch between sounding
like McCartney and sounding like Lennon. The other guys in
the band held their own too with backing vocals.

There was no attempt to look like the Beatles, but they did
sound very close to the original recordings.

A significant part of the Boston music scene was on hand,
including members of Extreme, Peter Wolf's band, the Cars
    (Ben Orr was there), etc.

The show was video-taped, and I can find out if copies of the
tape are available. However, I doubt it. I think the tape was
just for the use of the band to see how they came off...

Beatlejuice has a gig scheduled at Disney World this month,
and is doing other shows in the New England area. I have heard
some discussion about "touring" but I don't know the status
of that. I'll be talking to John Muzzy next weekend, so I'll
ask and post further details if he says OK...

Received a Farren postcard in the mail last week. Looks like
Charlie just played at Red Square this past weekend.

I think the dates on the card are screwed up, it lists the dates
    	as friday & saturday, the 24th & 25th.

But this friday & saturday are the 25th & 26th. I would think that
they would take turkey day off for the holiday, so the 24th MUST
    	be a misprint.

They're playing in Framingham on saturday, I'm not too far away,
    	think I'll slink on down.

Love listening to him play his 2 radio hits, Fool in Love, and
Lost in Loveland. Fool in Love was the one WBCN used to play when
    	Farrenheit was released.

After getting the privilege of warming up for Charlie's band couple
of months back, and getting a chance to chat with Charlie and his
band members, I found out they really are very nice people. Charlie
is a very interesting person, I thank him for the opportunity to

I think Paul is doing a good job, considering all

I agree. Charlie has a lot of "arm chair" quarterbacks to
contend with who simply don't understand the dynamics of
    the music business.

I know these people well. I'm working with some of these
people (Charlie and Muzz) on my own project. They know
1000 time more than I do about the way thinks work in
the music business, and I can tell you that I know a
hell of a lot more about it than most of the "arm chair
quarterbacks" who like to comment on Charlie.

Charlie has connections most of us could only dream about.
But connections are just the tip of the iceberg. In music,
like all other business, you need to have a business plan,
and putting Charlie together with just the right record

I think Muzz is out in California this week for the NAAM
music industry conference, but usually he's in Woburn
    	monday-wednesday, after 3:00 pm.

    >> Brad Delp from Boston is the vocalist, the bass player and one of

The bass player is from the fools, the lead guitarist was formerly with
local beatles bands "Get Back" and "Liverpool." The rhythm
guitarist/keyboarist I don't know about (but he is not the
guitarist from the fools). Muzz of the fools plays drums.

    >> Other than the Beatles themselves, they are the best Beatle band
    >> of all time. I've heard all the Beatle bands and they are in a
    >> class by themselves. No one else is even close.

    Not even an "IMHO" here??

Well, IMHO, Beatlejuice is an excellent band. The lead guitarist is
quite good, Muzz is outstanding, and Brad does an excellent job with
the vocals. They are solid and professional in pretty much all the
tunes they perform. Some of what they do is really mind-blowing (e.g.,
their version of "Because," Brad belting out "Oh Darling," etc.).

As a Beatles clone band afficionado, I'd say their only weakness is that
they lack a little in the authenticity department. For example, Brad
sings all the lead vocals, both Lennon and McCartney. This is
certainly understandable... if Brad was in my band he'd sing all the
leads, too! But it is not very Beatle-ish as the Beatles had two
outstanding front men who handled the leads individually, in unison,
    and in harmony.

I'd agree that Beatlejuice is a clear cut above the average Beatles
band. I'd recommend them to any beatles fan. But I respectfully
disagree with the statement that there is nobody else close to them.
For example, have you heard 1964??

I heard "Help!" is an excellent band, too.

Have you heard that also, Mark?

Actually, Muzz is "formerly" of the Fools, he helps to wash
    	dishes for Farren now...

But I'm going to keep my mouth shut, since I've never seen
Beatlejuice. Anyone who works at Performance Music Center
can help out. I spoke with a salesperson named Jeff, who
stated that Muzz was doing all promotion/booking for the
    	Beatlejuice gig.

Although I have seen Farren, VERY good, I loved it...

I've heard of them, but my opinion is a touch biased.

What does NAMM stand for? (No really, I don't know...)
