    tom principato!
i used to see him at the speakeasy in cambridge
in the mid-70's. he was in a band that had a
harp player names pierre beauregard. can't
remember the name of that band. he was also
in a band called big screaming mcgrew, the mcgrew
    band, and various other variations.

I saw Tom in Atlanta the day before the Rodney King verdict. He said
he was living in Virginia in the DC area (Falls Church sorta rings
a bell, is that a town?). He has recorded several CDs under his own
name and has some pretty hot stuff. Also appeared on a recording with
    Danny Gatton.

"Music Box Dancer" is actually by Frank Mills.

Although it is rare for an instrumental to reach no. 1 in the chart,
    some do make it.

    - Love's theme by Barry White is a no.1 in the chart
    - Theme from Shaft by Isaac Hayes is also a no.1

Some other favorites of mine include :

    - Kari by Bob James and Earl Klugh
    - My sweet summer suite by Barry White
    - Satin Soul also by Barry White
    - Feel like making love by Bob James
    - "2001" by Eumir Deodato

No hold on just a second.

Perhaps you can argue about whether or not playing 32nd notes
    constitutes "self-indulgence".

But when some guy writes about "how he feels" isn't that really
"self-indulgence" in one of its most direct and obvious forms?

I.E. isn't the GOAL of lyric writing to indulge in one's self?

    Keeping in the Telstar vein:

Back in the pre-invasion early 60s I really enjoyed those top 40
instrumentals that were mostly played to fill in the odd minutes before
the newscast. These are the sounds that made me want to play *electric*
guitar. Some that come to mind are:

        Green Onions
        Apache (Jorgen Ingman?)
        Pipeline
        Walk Don't Run
        Rabel Rouser

    More up to date:

Jeff Beck does a beautiful slow piece on Guitar Shop but I can't think
    of it's name now.

    Re: 564.71

Shuggie Otis (the son of R & B giant Johnny Otis) made this blues album
called Kooper Session (with Al Kooper) around 1971 at age *14*. He later
had a minor hit with Strawberry Letter 23 (which the Spinners or some
similar group had a major hit with later in the disco era) on another
album called Freedom Flight. Then he disappeared musically for years.
I think I read he may have had personal/drug problems but don't know
for sure. He has appeared on some recent Johnny Otis Show albums and
performs in the live shows too I think, so I think he's back on the
scene somewhat. Considering how well he played on the Kooper Session
album at such a young age and played/sang on the Freedom Flight album
soon thereafter, it looks like one of those unrealized potential kind
    of things.

That's all I know. Nice to hear of someone else out there who even
    heard of this guy!

According to some funeral director's association in the UK, one of the
most requested song played at funerals is Glen Miller's "In the Mood".

Its popularity appears to have begun when Peter Sellers died leaving his
wish that it be played at his funeral. Every time I picture Peters
Sellers laid out in a funeral parlor with "In the Mood" playing I crack
    up.

Absolutely Johann Sebastian Bach. The most commonly used "scary" piece
of music in history (at least the Tocatta part). However, the only
thing scary about Bach was his talent. I am so convinced that Bach was
the single greatest musician that ever lived that I will not even
entertain the notion of discussing it.

To attribute one of Bach's most emotional organ works to the, as Monty
Python so aptly put it: "an old puff' who wrote tunes", is nothing
short of heresy!!! People have burned at the stake for less!!

Too bad. I would have been interested in knowing the criteria you used

Sorry. What I was saying is that a good chunk of the really
popular instrumentals come from the very early years of rock and roll.
That includes several that I entered as favorites. I'm confusing myself
on the point I'm trying to make. But it has something to do with
originality and that original concepts are derived of original artforms.
That's probably thinking it to death, though.

On the original topic, Chet Atkins and Les Paul trade licks on an
album called Guitar Monsters. They cover just the hot licks in:
Memphis, Apache, Maria Elena (SP?), Rebel Rouser, and a few more. It's
great, some of the bits are so simple, anyone could learn to play them
in a few minutes. Then some are so slick, you can't follow them.

"I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine" - writing credits go to
Ike Turner, I believe - although I've never heard a version by him.
There is an outstanding version on Ry Cooder's 'Bop Til You Drop',
and Duke Levine just covered it on 'Country Soul Guitar' - 2 very
    different, but equally good versions.

Can't believe no one mentioned "Song of the Wind" from Santana
'Caravanserai'. (Also can't figure out how to spell the name of the
    album....)

How about "Little Martha" from 'Eat a Peach'? Don't think I saw that
mentioned either - a little gem.

I hasten to point out that the above-mentioned licks occur on a
Shel Silverstein-penned tune entitled "I'm Your Biggest Fan". With
tongue firmly planted in cheek, Chet insists that he's "the biggest
Les Paul fan there are" and then recalls (and plays) tunes that Les
made famous...."Raunchy", "Apache" and "Memphis"....and all the while,
the other musicians are guffawing loudly and Les is trying to explain:
"...uh, Chester .... none of *those* were mine ....."

Then in the next verse, Les turns the tables and recalls tunes that
Chet made famous...."Marie Elena", "Rebel Rouser" and the famous
"Guitar Boogie-Woogie".....and Chet tries vainly to explain "Les...
I never played any of those ....uh, tunes!"

    Hilarious!

"Guitar Monsters" was the follow-up to the unexpected success of
"Chester & Lester." According to Les, Chet thought the "Chester
& Lester" session was only the rehersal, but Les thought it was
good enough, so they put out what they had. Neither expected much
response to the album, and were astounded when it won a Grammy...
