463.0. "Billy Joel" by DEMON::DEMON::COURT (Everybody thought it was a dog.) Wed Jul 28 1993 17:57

    What!? No Billy Joel note?

Billy Joel's new album, River of Dreams (?) is due out in the next few
weeks. I picked up a copy of the first single yesterday "from the
forthcoming album." It's a very catchy tune.

Anybody here heard it? Any information on the new album, or any
comments on his career or his music up until now?

One thing I've always noticed about Mr. Joel is the range of styles he adopts.
Don't know whether it's intentional or not, but to my ears he seems to compose
in the trademark styles of other artists or groups quite often (and
effectively!). I can think of some which are recognizably similar to the
Four Seasons and Springsteen, for instance.

In songs of BJ's which have a more unique style, I hear quite a range of
approaches, nothing which I'd tend to call "the Billy Joel sound." (This is, to
me, a Good Thing.) It'd be interesting to chat with him about how he writes.

Interesting topic: Vocal or recording styles that Billy Joel
    has impersonated:

    Four Seasons (Uptown Girl)
    Ray Charles (Baby Grand)
    Ronnettes (Say Goodbye to Hollywood)
    The Tymes (The Longest Time)
Bruce Springsteen (A Matter of Trust)

I think "Laura" from "The Nylon Curtain" borrows heavily from the
    Beatles.

    re: .7

Having heard two cuts from the new album, I'd say there's a 50% chance
that it will be a step up from "Storm Front" (which I thought was a
small step up from "The Bridge"). The song "River of Dreams" has
been on my mind for days, but the other song, "No Man's Land," is
another rocker a la "That's Not Her Style." Interesting vocals, but
    nothing too memorable.

What do people think of earlier albums?

    My favorites:

The Nylon Curtain, 52nd Street, Turnstiles, Songs in the Attic

    Solid efforts:

The Stranger, Glass Houses, An Innocent Man, Piano Man

    Good enough:

The Bridge, Storm Front, Greatest Hits

    Disappointments:

Kohlept (sp?), Cold Spring Harbor, Streetlife Serenade

I just thought that I'll have my pennies worth.....

Here in sunny Blighty, BJ didn't mean much except Uptown girl ( which I
still think is a pretty run-of-the-mill pop record),until I heard his
    Greatest Hits LP.
He is one of the few performers who,to my ears, can pull off a great
range of sounds so damn well.. From the Piano man through to Big shot
through to storm front, all great songs..
This is one of my most played cd's and I'm sure
the start of a BJ collection.... Could everything else be up to this
    standard..

    I don't really like Billy Joel's performance style - can't say why,
though - he's easily got all of Barry Manilow's MOR charisma...

But, he was interviewed on CBS This Morning and it came out that BJ
wrote a song that Barf Brooks has had some success with: Shameless!
Billy said he wanted to write a Jimi-Hendrix-style love song...

I see that Billy Joel had the b*lls to price his new CD at $17.99.
    That's $17.99 for 10 songs, folks. This even eclipses Sting's $16.99
list price. I presume that Christie Brinkley is included in the price.

I've already seen it on sale for $13.99, but I'll wait until Target
puts it on sale for $11.99.

I guess Billy's so pissed that his manager stole $30 million from him
that he's decided to steal it back from us.

Hearkening back to the "Is it real or is it Billy?" theme (i.e., BJ's knack for
imitating styles), just heard "You May Be Right" the other night, and it sure did
sound a lot like ol' Mick and the Stones!

Thinking *strongly* about working that one up- it feels sooooooo right...

You may be right,

But it just may be a loo-oonatic you're lookin' for!

Is $17.99 the list price, or is that the inflated price at one of the
mall chain stores? Does Billy Joel determine the list, or does the
    record company decide that?

FWIW, I got it on sale at Rockit Records in Nashua (NH) for $11.99.
(It may have even been $10.99 - not sure.)

Also FWIW, the first four and last four songs are excellent. Overall,
I think it's better - at least on the first couple of listens - than
his two previous efforts. I may post a more complete review in the

Donald Fagen's latest came out at $17.99 also. In a moment of

I saw Billy Joel at the Garden on Tuesday night. As always, it was a
great show, but unfortunately, the acoustics from the loges were
terrible. Here's a set list, from memory. The order's not perfect or
even particularly close, and I may have left out a song or two.

First three, for sure: A Matter of Trust, No Man's Land, Allentown
      Lullabye
      The River of Dreams
      Pressure
      Downeaster Alexa
      I Go to Extremes

      Shameless
      Prelude/Angry Young Man
      Shades of Grey
      Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
      Good Night Saigon
      My Life
      We Didn't Start the Fire
Last two, before encores: You May Be Right, Only the Good Die Young
Encores: Storm Front, Big Shot, Piano Man

I'd be interested in hearing what he plays at other shows. He said
that it was the beginning of the tour, and that some songs would stay
and others would go, depending on the crowd's reaction.

I'm not much of a fan, but Billy's recent statements about the state of
the music biz, in particular his complaints about promoters driving up
ticket prices, rings home with me. Billy has said he thinks promoters
should look at the economy and cut price as he doesn't feel comfortable
asking fans to shell out so much dough to come see him. He argued that
after years of working with certain promoters (and making them lots of
money) the promoters should be willing to work with him to reduce
prices. I guess the million dollar question is whether the current
tour's tix are any cheaper than any of the other big tours coming
    through town.

I heard he also reserves some front row seats then has his road crew
pick people at random in the worst seats and give them the front row
    tickets!

Also, yesterday I saw a CD reissue (on EMI) of the long-deleted United
Artists album by the Hassles, Billy's band from the 60s. Don't know if
this is out of print already, as it was a used copy.

I think what Billy was getting at are these out-of-state ticket
scalpers that will sell you a ticket to a show that has not gone on
sale yet for 3X the face value.....and yes the scapler outside the
venue is no better....(I feel a rat hole forming here)....but He is
right, this is his show, he will only see money from the face value
sale, so if you pay more then to him you just got ripped off ! what he
said on ET was great ! "I rather play to an empty house then have
scaplers fill the house" (somthing like that)

more big acts should make these types of statements IMO.....

The only difference between the first two concerts that I can see is
that he replaced "Storm Front" with "Seen the Lights..on Broadway".

He also sang "All about Soul" from his new album that he said would be
the next single. It was not on your list in .32 but you might have just
    omitted it.

Some interesting notes about Friday nite's concert:

The show was chosen as the one to use footage for an upcoming PBS
documentary. Billy was really hamming it up with the camera men!

And he also said that a song from the concert would be used on MTV as a
"live" version soon to be released, but didn't say which song. I would
guess it would have to be one of the new songs that he performed,
either "Shades of Grey", "Lullabye" or "All About Soul".

First off let me state my BJ concert experience as reference.
Paradise Club, RDS Dublin Ireland, Centrum, Twice at the Garden (now 3).

His stage layout and dynamics, lighting and sound was the best I've seen of his.
He seemed more relaxed than previous concerts, but also less energetic.
Maybe he's just starting to show his age. I remember the 1st Garden concert
back around 1978 when he was running all over the stage and speakers.

He had 2 grand pianos on circular lifts. One at the front center and one
at the back of the stage. He had 2 360 rotating electric keyboards on both
sides of the stage. He played around 3-5 songs on the side and back pianos
to the "back" crowd. I've always seen him make a point to play directly
at the people at the rear and side of the stage (i.e. cheaper seats).
The 2 grand pianos also rotated 360 degrees via a slow motor so front
stage folks saw him at all angles.

He really set a dynamic tone during his 1st 3 songs which he kept up for
over an hour. Then he did "Shameless" and it was like the balloon broke.
It seemed like everyone decided to go to the rest room at the same time.
He played another lame song and then burst back into it with "Saigon".
Great lighting and sound affects for the helicopter. Who needs to go
to "Miss Saigon" anyways.
The song that disappointed me the most was "Downeast Alexa". I love the
violin arrangement on this recording and the way it was performed at
the Centrum a few years ago. Last night the violin piece was replaced by the
guitar and it really ruined the song for me.

His jokes and adlibbing were great. He explained that since he's written over
200 songs that he has to keep some cheap sheets in case he forgets some
cords or words. He then did a great Dylan impression.
Also when he had the accordian on for "Downeast Alexa" he spoofed some
polka tunes. He said he'd save that south and western swings of the tour.

He still has his original drummer, Liberty Diveto. Bass, lead guitar
and keyboards were new. On percussion and just about everything else and
loaded with a great voice is the same girl that toured with him for the
stormfront tour. Energy just pours from her. On horns is the same guy
with dark curly hair that he's had since his Russian tour.
This guy also plays about everything on the stage and can really
crank out the sax solos.

It was by far the best concert I've seen of his. I'd give it a 9.3 out of 10.
I of course wanted a little bit more and I was expecting 3 song encore.
He played around 2 hours 15 minutes. His Piano man was great with his
harmonica solos. The whole place sang the song for him.

This concert memory might get me back to the piano.

Cheers,
Paul

PS. If you have "Songs in the Attic" (maybe his best album, all live!)
listen to "She's got a way about her". It was recorded in Boston
at the Paradise Club. I swear at the end you can hear me cheering
something like "way to go Billy!!!". Really.

I think the discussion will pick up again in a month when Billy Joel
returns to the Boston area (The Centrum in Worcester). He has 3 shows
    planned in early November.

I especially like "New York State of Mind" also and wished he had
played it. I'm sure it gets added to his show when he hits his home
state! The crowd must go wild when he plays that one for them.

I'm probably in the minority but I still think "Storm Front" has more
good cuts than "River of Dreams". I may need more time on this though.

As the last reply stated, Billy Joel special on PBS (Channel 2 Boston)
tonight at 9pm. I believe the show is called "Billy Joel, Shades of
Gray". The leader showed some recording sessions and him with the
    family on their boat.

I plan on taping this on the same tape I have his HBO Russion tour,
"A Matter of Trust". If you haven't seen the Russian tour video
you are really missing something. It is a combination of great
planned and spontaneous musical sessions and fantastic footage of
various locals thorough the old Solviet Union.

BTW, I heard he played on the first CBS Letterman show. Did anyone see
this and can tell me what song he played and how it sounded?

According to the paper, this is not a concert show but more of
a song writers show. It shows him at Berklee speaking to the
students. He also tells how he wrote certain tunes, where
"We didn't start the fire" was a country tune, for example.

Also, where one newer tune was taken from a previous one.

The article said that people tuning in to see concert footage
will be disappointed - limited clips. Musicians tuning in will
see a how-to on writing pop songs.

    	Tom

btw, the article is in todays McPaper - USA Today.

463.57PBS show reviewPROXY::GREENAWAYThu Oct 14 1993 19:1136

I saw the 1 Hr special last night and it was excellent. After reading
Reply .55 I thought it would be very drab.

The show basicly covered a little bit of his background, but mainly the
making of the album "River of Dreams". They showed either snippets
or entire cuts of each song on the album. I was surprised to find
out that he recorded the album with a whole different group of
musicians. The good thing is that his core band is doing his tour.
The show portrayed him as very settled in his middle age.
There were also other insights into other older songs.
    Some special spots:

    - Speaking in front of some Berklee students about song writing.
At one point he turned around and started playing "Summer Highlands
      Fall" on a baby grand.

    - "Only the Good Die Young" was first written as a raegae song.
But when Billy told his drummer, Liberty Devito about it. He
refused to play raegae, so Billy Rocked it up.

    - He played a classical version of "For the Longest Time"

    - We didn't start the fire was written in Kentucky and started out
      as a country tune.

If I remember it, I'll check my WGBH magazine to see if there is a repeat
showing. PBS of New Hampshire may be repeating this as well.

The show got me thinking...is there any way I could get to see him
again at the Worcester Centrum? Hm..

    Cheers,
    Paul

What's with this "Shades of Gray" tune.

    Jack-Bruce/Cream/EC-on-Disreali-Gears/Sweet-Wine or what? I've often
thought of BJ is a musical chameleon, but this is ridiculous. The first
time that I heard it I thought that Jack Bruce had a new album out.
There's even a break before the last verse where it sounds like they're
going to go out just like "Sunshine of Your Love".

Given that courts have ruled that imitating someone's unique sound can
be an infringement on copyright (wasn't it Santana that cried foul when
a TV ad used a guitar track with a definitive Santana sound?), I'd say
Joel is flirting with a law suit here. And he knows all about law suits.
All the plaintiff need do is play "Sunshine of Your Love", "Sweet Wine"
and "SWALBR" (or whatever it is), for the jury. Case closed.

I read the account of her helicopter crash in People and I noticed that
she said that when the crash was happening, and she was being thrown
around, that all she could think of was that she couldn't die and leave
her daughter. She said she was being bounced and thrown around and all
she kept thinking was "Alexis, Alexis, Alexis!" or whatever the
daughter's name is (something like Alexis). It struck me that she
didn't mention anything about thinking about her husband when she
thought she might be going to die, only her daughter, so it didn't
surprise me to hear that they were splitting up.

Anyone ever hear his work with Attila/The Hassles?

Well, neither had I until I happened to find "Rollin' Home" in
    	the bargain bin at Strawberries.

VERY 70's-sounding ... lots of keyboards and some guitar. And
the keys are very good, IMO ... somewhere between a Jon Lord and
a Keith Emerson, although lacks some of the precision of Emerson.
Wonder if Billy played the keyboards? This CD has no credits.

    	A rockin' album, for sure.

After another listen, this is a VERY rockin' album. Some good
guitar AND keys work, especially on "California Flash" and
    	"Amplifier Fire", among others.

The 1st 9 are sung by Billy Joel, then some other guy takes over
for the last 4 or 5.

db, if you ever see this album, pick it up. If you like 70's
