588.0. "Best Of 1993" by QRYCHE::STARR (Remember your mission!) Tue Jan 04 1994 14:53

This is the annual note for a "best of" reflection. I haven't finished
writing mine up yet, but I'll post Billboard's top albums/singles here so
people can remember what was popular (not that this necessarily equates
to being "good").

    That's it, I'm old.

I've not heard about 75% of those listed, and given what I think of
the ones I *do* recognize, I don't feel I'm missing anything.

Not a single song or album listed is in my collection. (Although, I
just oredered "The Bodyguard" and something by John Secada for a
friend. Really! They aren't for me!!)

Yeah, the real issue here is why old people don't buy enough music to
get the stuff they listen to on these lists. Top 40 radio is based on
the idea that noone over the age of 30 lives in the universe.

Now, if all us old fogies bought as many albums as I do each year, then
someone like Charlie Haden or John Prine would have the #1 spot 8^)

    Don't feel bad, guys....I'm not old (31) and I haven't heard of a whole
bunch of these songs. Most of the music that's out these days just
doesn't appeal to me. Ispend most of my time listening to Dire Straits
    and Pink Floyd....

songs).

Well, at 31 years old, I'm pretty familiar with 30 of the Top 100 singles. I
do better on the Albums, where I own 26 of the Top 100 and would recognize
probably 75% or so.

588.10PEAKS::YANDELLCan I use my hammer yet?Tue Jan 04 1994 20:258
It is not a matter of age. I turned 21 a couple of months ago and recognize
maybe 25-35 of the songs. It is a matter of music quality. With the top 40
today, many of the songs sound the same, and I have no interest in them. Even
MTV has been failing me in the last several years, now all they play is rap,
alternative, and the "Seattle" sound. (I'm from Seattle and don't like it).
It seems like nowadays anyone with no talent can put out a record. Classic
rock and roll will stick around forever. Take the comeback of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Queen rules.

...I'm going on 36 and still purchase "new" music on a regular basis...
and I find it hard to believe that "Core" by the Stone Temple Pilots
was'nt on the previous lists...it is IMHO one of the most solid,
rockin' releases of the last 10 years...the last release to stimulate

At 31, I recognise nearly 90% of the top 100 singles and have purchased
pretty close to half of the top 100 LPS, but you have to consider I do
mobil DJing. Typically, if I get three requests for a certain song
I'll buy the CD (or CDsingle if available)... There's nothing more
painful than buying a Billy Ray Cyrus/GNR disc, but ya gotta do wut ya

I recognize a lot of the names of artists and songs, but in many cases
have never actually heard the music. That's because I see them

I'm curious.... how come Neil Young - Harvest Moon is listed under
both the 1992 best' NOTE and the 1993 NOTE?

When did it actually come out?

Because the Billboard list sez what the top *sellers* were for 1993.
Alan shouldn't have titled this "best of".

Albums I liked that came out in 1993, and didn't make the Billboard Top
    100 were:

    1. Too Long In Exile - Van Morrison
    2. Wandering Spirit - Mick Jagger
    3. You Gotta Sin To Be Saved - Maria McKee
    4. Everybody's Doing It, So Why Can't We - The Cranberries
    5. Neil Young Unplugged
    6. Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration
    7. Hatful of Stars - Cindy Lauper

Of albums that were released in 1993, I think Zooropa, by U2, was
    probably my overall favorite, though.

I would say that "Achtung Baby" from U2 is on that list for the third year
running. It was released on the 25th of November 1991. It sold about 400,000
or more in the first week. Iam 33 and I have 10 from the top 100 list, I would
probably buy another ten off the list, but thats it. About 50% I never even heard
of, probably rap stuff etc.. which doesn't get much airplay over here in Europe.

  8. Ten - Pearl Jam
 21. Ten Summoner's Tales - Sting
 27. Automatic For The People - R.E.M.
 29. Zooropa - U2 70.
 55. Bigger, Better, Faster, More! - 4 Non Blondes
 60. Greatest Hits - Queen
 70. Diva - Annie Lennox
 81. Us - Peter Gabriel
 82. Achtung Baby - U2
 89. Songs Of Faith And Devotion - Depeche Mode

                                                                 -dave-

Finally getting around to posting my Top Ten for the year. It wasn't until
recently that I even picked up a couple of these, so I had been holding off
on posting anything. Anyways, better late than never....

Albums
------
1. Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
Just incredible, the best debut album I've heard in years! And it
was backed up with a killer live show. Even Billboard called this
the best debut hard rock album since Led Zeppelin I.

2. Bon Jovi - Keep The Faith
I know most people hate these guys, but I like 'em anyways. And this
was a very strong album, both musically and lyrically.

3. John Cougar Mellancamp - Human Wheels
Similar to the Bon Jovi album, this has some great lyrics. The music,
and particularly the vocals, are very understated. But it grows
	under your skin over time.

4. Pearl Jam - Vs.
Contining to fulfil the promise of the first album, the band once
again presents a knock-out punch of music.

5. Swinging Steaks - Southside Of The Sky
Local boys done good! Nice combination of country and rock that's
reminiscient of the 70's Eagles/PPL movement. And killer harmonies
	to boot!

6. REM - Automatic For The People
A very elegant record, with lovely string arrangements courtesy
of John Paul Jones (ex-Zeppelin bass player). It's interesting that
my two favorite REM albums are their softest (this one) and their
	hardest (Lifes Rich Pageant).

7. Robert Plant - Fate Of Nations
Robert continues to put out albums that just get better and better.
I could do without the remake of "If I Were A Carpenter", but "29
Palms" alone is worth the ten bucks.

8. Melissa Etheridge - Yes I Am
This is one of the two recent arrivals (along with the Jawhawks),
but it's already impressive even on the first couple listens. Can't
	wait for the live show!

9. The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
Tom Petty should pay these guys royalites for "Mary Jane's Last
Dance", which is a complete ripoff of the Jayhawks "Waiting For
The Sun". But I'll bet the Jayhawks get the last laugh; Tom's
slowly on his way out, but hopefully these guys have just begun.

10. Pete Townsend - Psychoderelict
The man is still creative after 30 years in the business, and that's
an incredible feat in itself. Not everything totally works here, but
some of the songwriting is among his best, and he gets extra points
for the concept. (And I *liked* the dialogue that interupted the
music; sort of like listening to a play...)

Still have to check out
-----------------------
Liz Phair - Exile in Guysville (sounds great from the reviews, but that
doesn't necessarily mean I'll like it)
Smashing Pumpkins - (only because I see it on everyone else's list!)
Counting Crows - lots of hype, "Mr. Jones" is just starting to break at
radio. Hopefully the rest of the album is as good.

Singles I Loved To Hear On The Radio
------------------------------------
"Creep" - Radiohead (there's a nice love song hidden under that grunge)
"Sex Type Thing" - Stone Temple Pilots (wall-of-sound guitars!)
"Hey Jealousy" - Gin Blossoms (lovely pop song with a killer hook)
"Got No Shame" - Brother Cane (Aerosmith meets Guns and Roses in a barroom)
"Living On The Edge" - Aerosmith (hated it at first, grew to love it)
"I Would Do Anything For Love" - Meatloaf (guilty pleasure)

Best Concerts Of The Year
-------------------------
Rage Against The Machine - Paradise
Lindsey Buckingham - Paradise
George Clinton - Orpheum Theatre
Sue Foley - Johnny D's
Pete Townsend - Great Woods
Bon Jovi - Great Woods
Joe Ely/Lucinda Williams - Paradise
Shawn Colvin - Orpheum Theatre

Biggest Concert Disappointment - Prince @ Worcester Auditorium (good, but
just not as great as it shoud have been)

Most Overrated Bands Of The Year - Nirvana (I just don't get it... doesn't
every single sound the same to you?)

Soul Asylum (doesn't this sound like
rehashed Tom Petty? decent enough, but
				   what's the big deal?)
