740.0. "Tired Tunes, Put Them To Bed" by TECWT2::BOUDREAU () Mon Oct 23 1995 18:30

There's already a "Bashing" and an "I just don't get it topic, so this
might be overkill. But some songs start out good, even great, and then
get played to the point of suicide. I'll admit most of those I list, I never
liked.

In the car, with the radio playing, in any place where I have my
hair cut, even in the dentist's office, where they no longer play muzak, but
those radio stations that play Whitney Houston tunes, there are some songs
that I can't get away from.

These tunes are tired:

"Boys of Summer" - Don't know who does it - This was tired ten years ago when it
first came out.

"Peaceful Easy Feeling" - Eagles - Enough, sleep with her - eternally - in the
desert.

"Running Against the Wind" - Bob Segar - take a water break and a nap.

"Turn the Page(?)" - Bob Segar - the one about touring and playing
star again. Take a stand and let those guys kick your asses.

"I'm On fire(?)" - Springsteen, he wakes up all sweaty. He was having a
nightamare about a song that he's heard at least once a day for 12 years.

"Layla" the accoustic, I mean UNplugged version. Eric goes back to roots he
never had. Fooof!

Some day these songs have got to go the route of Stairway to Heaven,
Dream On, and Hey Jude. But when?

Any come to mind?

This is exactly why I hardly ever listen to the radio ... if I

And "The Boys of Summer" is by Don Henley, from The Eagles.

I'm not wild about the Unplugged (tm) Layla, but I *really* hate the original
one, especially the end part! A bunch of senseless guitar noodling that goes
nowhere!

Yes, that's the part I'm talking about, but really most of the "noodling"
is being done by too many guitars. Keyboard wise, I think there's only
one piano in that section. I might be wrong, though. It's been quite a
few years since I last listened to it.

Gee, the piano part is the ONLY thing I liked about the original.

And it's absence is one more reason why I hated the "Lamela" unplugged
    version.

However... having said that... it's a great piano riff, but it goes on
    for WAY too long.

Yes, I'll add in my $.02 about the ending of Layla; I agree totally
with Hal about too many guitars. The really high register playing
really grates on my ears. There's certainly no statements being
made by the players during the whole extended ending.

I was around back then; I had the Derek & The Dominoes album. Gave it

Duane A. were imho much more "listenable to" in their own ventures
outside of Derek & The Dominoes. Too much excess on the D&TD album.

I knew I forgot one, one of the sleepiest, too.

Live music is a whole other world of tired tunes. I think the king

I hear that and it's time to leave. I'll go to the nearest Polish American

song just sucked to begin with, then got played to death.

I just read a blurb in today's paper, taken from the wire services, that
Kenny G's house caught fire and it took 50 firefighters and a lot of something
else to kill the fire. Then the story explained that he's a New Age
saxaphonist.

The only so-called new age I've ever liked is George Winston. I'm not sure
what Kenny G's "Songbird" sounds like.

Since I play in a wedding/cover band, I can list a number of them that
I would never like to hear again:

1. Unchained Melody. I want to puke when we play this song.

2. Mustang Sally. Steve's right. It's overdone.

3. Old Time Rock 'n' Roll. Segar. Enough said.

4. Taking Care of Business. Ditto.

5. What I like About You. Yuck!

6. Get Down Tonight. KC and the Sunshine Band. Left over disco crap.

7. and the absolute worst: The Electric Slide or Electric Boogie.

I've always been amazed at every wedding and every party
we've played, how many people (women especially) know how
to dance the Electric Slide.

The Manfred Mann version omits about 2/3's of the words.

That was Bruce's "stream of consciousness" phase of bizarre (but
    in a good way) lyrics.

About the best thing I can say about Manfred Mann's version of the

For an interesting change of pace, check out Jackson Browne's version
on his "For Everyman" album. A very nice version with a more laid-back
attitude and wonderful pedal steel work by Sneaky Pete Kleinow and guitar
work by David Lindley. I much prefer it to the Eagles version, although
I admit that that might be because I've heard the Eagles' version 60
gazillion times. :-)

They must have been the only ones that noticed that serious music had
fallen over! :-)

Seriously, though, I'm curious as to what you meant by that statement.
I never thought the Eagles sounded like the southern rock bands, at least
not like what *I* think of as southern rock. Perhaps you meant country
rock bands, which I don't think of as southern rock. For example, I
personally don't consider Lynnrd Skynrd (sp?) or Molly Hatchet to be
country rock, but I do consider them southern rock. I would consider
country rock to be more along the lines of the Flying Burrito Brothers
or Commander Cody, among others.

Could you give some examples of Eagles work that fall before and after
this demarcation? And perhaps some examples of southern rock bands whose
coattails they were riding?

Blood Sweat and Tears covered it (and I'm sure they weren't the

Re: the Eagles and Southern Rock

No, there's no way I'd confuse them with any of the bands normally
associated with "Southern Rock" (Lynryrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchett, the
Outlaws, etc.). They're more in the mould of country rock bands like
the Flying Burrito Bros. (though, IMO, the Eagles don't deserve to be
mentioned in the same breath...too poppy by half!).

One of my fave moments from any live album is Southside Johnny & the
Asbury Jukes' "Reach Up and Touch the Sky" when Johnny announces that
they're going to do a relaxed, West Coast-style show ("get your
headphones on"!), and the guitarist plays of "Take It Easy". Johnny
cuts him short ("Forget it!") and the band go into one of their own
    songs!
