699.0. "Patrick Moraz" by MPGS::MARKEY (Llamas are larger than frogs) Thu Feb 02 1995 19:09

This note is for discussing the upcoming Patrick Moraz show.

The price is $50 per person.

The show will be held in the B (barn) studio of Longview
Farm Recording Studios on Stoddard Road in North Brookfield
Massachusetts. The sound stage that Moraz will be performing
on was originally constructed for, and to the specifications
of, the Rolling Stones; for the rehearsal of their 1981
world tour. It has hosted many well-known recording clients
    before and since.

The show is being held in early April, 1994.

The show is most definitely non-profit. At this point, I hope
it is also non-loss, but that is a big hope.

There will be two sets of solo-piano music, lasting no less
than a total of 90 minutes. Material will mainly focus on
the new Patrick Moraz album: "Windows of Time".

There will be an opening act, and wine and cheese will be
    served.

No more than 100 tickets will be sold. This is the intersection
of the anticipated costs and the revenues. No refunds will
be given. If the show does not happen on the specified date,
    it will be rescheduled.

No smoking will be allowed on the sound stage. There will
be a policeman on duty, and because of insurance regulations,
no one who is visibly intoxicated or under the influence
of drugs will be admitted (sorry, I had to say that).

The seating will be very intimate, with the seats arranged
around the piano on the sound stage. There will be no
(or very minimal) sound reinforcement used for the Patrick
Moraz part of the show. The opening act, which uses
amplification, will be in a separate area of the studio.

There will be an opportunity to meet Patrick Moraz. He
will be selling merchandise at the show (I have no
involvement with this at all.) You can get merchandise
    autographed.

There is a likelihood that Patrick will use the extensive
audio and video recording facilities of Longview during
    his stay there.

The $800 advance to Patrick Moraz has been paid, out
of my pocket. The check was mailed on Saturday, Jan
28 and I received word today that it has been received
by Gary Davis (Patrick Moraz's manager).

The tickets will be handled a little differently than
they are at most shows. Each person will receive a voucher
stating that they purchased some number of tickets.
That voucher will be checked against a list of names
the night of the show. You will then be admitted once
you show ID. This allows us to prevent unauthorized
people from entering the show, without worrying about
the cost of printing counterfeit-proof tickets.

I will be traveling for a bit on the west coast. As soon
as I return, I'll post the date of the show, as well as
the address to which you should send money for tickets.
The sooner I sell 100 tickets, the sooner I breathe
again... I'm definitely _way_ out on a limb so your
    support is appreciated.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, the Patrick Moraz show scheduled
for Sunday, April 2 has been canceled.

The death blow to my efforts came this morning when I lost access to
the venue where the concert was to be held (Longview Farm Recording
Studios). As you may be aware, I had previously tried to locate the
concert at another venue, and was unable to find a suitable
alternative. Thus, I see no reason to start another round of "move
the concert" at this point, as many of those who purchased tickets
indicated that their reason for doing so was the location; those
ticket sales may be lost anyway if the location changes and there's
not enough time to try and make it up and make a financial go of
this whole mess.

As for Longview, I am extremely disappointed, but understand their
position entirely. When it became clear that renting and moving a
piano into the barn was not financially feasible (given the number
of ticket sales), the only alternative was to hold the concert in
the smaller "A" studio where there is already a Steinway concert
grand piano.

When I was a teenager, there was a certain British rock group who
were my idols. I bought all their records, drooled about going
to their concerts (I as too young to actually go), ate up every
piece of paraphernalia related to the group I could find, etc.
Well, in one of life's strange twists of fate, it turns out that
the guitarist of this band is currently recording in the "A"
room at Longview. He's been there for nine weeks working on a
new album, and announced yesterday his intention to stay for
at least 4 more weeks. All of his equipment is in the "A" studio,
so even if he took the 2nd off, they would still have to move
out a lot of stuff. Simultaneously, another well-known band
has booked a residential "lock-out" of the barn, extending over
the same period. They are paying the full "label rate", roughly
twice what I had negotiated for the day of April 2nd. Put
yourself in Longview's shoes... you get to choose between a
guy who's paying half rate for one day, or a group that's paying
full rate for 10 or 12 days. I think it's pretty obvious who
would (and did) win.

So, I will be returning people's checks. They have not been
cashed. No charge card orders have been sent in, and all credit
card information I have will be destroyed. I'm going to try
to get tickets to one of the shows in Sterling, and that will
be my Patrick Moraz fix. I apologize for the way this turned
out and I want to express my sincere thanks to all those who
purchased tickets and otherwise offered their help.

I've yet to speak with Patrick Moraz's manager. I suppose it's
possible that we could schedule a new date at the end of the tour,
although I can tell you now that it will not be at Longview
Farm if it does happen. That's not because I'm mad at them, I just
don't see a point of risking the same thing happening again.
If you're available on Friday March 31, or Saturday April 1,
I know shows are being held in Sterling MA; I will track
down more information on those shows and post a follow up.

Again, thank you for your patience and please accept my apologies
for not being able to carry this to its conclusion.

Brian, Ive been following this note with interest - I'm in the UK so
attending was out of the question - it seems you've made great efforts
to get this thing organised, not just for yourself but for others too.
I'm sorry to hear it hasn't worked out, and I for one will certainly
    learn from your experiences.

I hope you haven't lost too much on this....

    Graham,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Still, in the back
of my mind, and despite the facts indicating otherwise,
I still feel like somehow I buggered this all up...

If only I had chosen a better venue to start with, etc. etc...

Actually, in retrospect, I think the real "giant killer" in
all of this was the lack of time between when the date
was announced and when the date was to occur... most
concerts are _booked_ from four to six months in advance.
Most of the venues I tried said "we would have been
interested if we had more than a month to plan..." The
responsibility for this lies mostly with Moraz's manager,
    Gary Davis.

It's certainly made me very reluctant to ever consider
doing something like this again. It's not so much the
money as the time that I put into it for naught...

699.5MPGS::MARKEYThe bottom end of Liquid SanctuaryMon Apr 03 1995 18:3679
What a weekend! It all started Friday night, when I attended the
performance of Patrick Moraz at Will Sherwood's house (thanks
Will !). I can't really add anything to what Rick Calcagni
said over in the Yes note, the performance was simply marvelous.
It also turned into an adventure of sorts... I have a habit
of getting hopelessly lost while driving sometimes, particularly
it seems, when I'm driving a "VIP" to some destination. I got
lost with Peter Gabriel, and now I've gotten lost with Patrick
Moraz. Oh no, not just lost. I got "it's after 2:00AM, there's
nothing open, I'm not even sure what state I'm in anymore,
I'm almost out of gas, and I have no effin' idea where I'm
going" lost. The 10 minute drive from Will Sherwood's house
to Patrick's hotel took an hour and a half. Yep, shoot me now,
I have all the sense of direction of a blind man in a fun
house. Probably less.

But all was well. I got a chance to talk to Patrick at great
length. A very interesting man, to say the least. Of course,
I also had to go with Patrick to his hotel room to explain
to his lovely girlfriend Phyllis that it wasn't Patrick's
fault we got there at 2:30AN... talk about hanging one's head
in shame! She was very nice though. Patrick opened up a bit,
told me who he likes to work with and who he doesn't like
to work with, and why.

I don't feel right about publishing his comments here, but some
of the things he said really took me by surprise. I will tell
you that the rumored Steve Morse/Billy Cobham/Stanley Clarke/
Patrick Moraz group will not happen. At least not with Patrick.
However, he indicated that he might do another album along
the lines of his project with Bill Bruford (Music for Piano
and Drums), but this time with Billy Cobham. The other thing
that's probably safe to tell you about is the picture Patrick
showed me of the Moraz lineup of Yes. I've seen pictures
of Yes before, but I would have to say that the closeups
in this 8x10 showed, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Yes
were _the_ ugliest rock band of all time! :-)

The real delight of the weekend, however, was yesterday. As
you may know, this was the day of the canceled Longview
concert. I felt rather bad about canceling the show, so
I offered Patrick the use of my studio for the day. Much
to my delight, he took me up on the offer.

Patrick arrived at the studio around 2:30 yesterday afternoon.
He walked in, spotted my Kurzweil electric grand piano,
and went to town. He did the most amazing improvised jam.
After this little impromptu concert, we headed for the
control room. Patrick decided the time would best be spent
editing the DAT tapes he's been making at all of his
dates on the tour. We spent 13 hours editing tape yesterday,
crashed at the studio, and then got up this morning after
a couple hours sleep and got back to work. The result is
that I have over 5 hours of performances that now have to be
digitally edited and processed, which Patrick will then
further condense for a series of live CDs.

In addition, I'll probably be going to Denver later this
month to do some location recording, which will be added
to the stack of other things I'm editing for Patrick's
live CD. He also left me a master of another unreleased
tape of electronic music he did in the late 70s that
he wants me to work my digital editing magic on and
remaster. He hinted that if the remaster sounds good, he
might release that on CD as well.

He's a very intense, very likable man. His girlfriend/
road manager is a sweetheart as well. Nice people, I
look forward to working with them, and a nice album
credit or two won't break my heart either.

I woke up this morning to the sound of Patrick playing
the Kurzweil again. He hasn't left the studio yet, he's
got my engineer Joe doing something else (making cassettes
for him I think). I hope Joe can shoo him out of there
in time to make his concert in Vermont tonight...

699.6Mind Boggling!!MPGS::MARKEYThe bottom end of Liquid SanctuaryWed Apr 05 1995 14:5634
Whoa! That's all I can say... Whoa! Another late night
of editing in the studio yesterday/this morning, but
man oh man was it worth it!!!

That mystery tape I mentioned in .5, that I thought Patrick
told me was "electronic music", sounds more like prepared
piano pieces in which Patrick uses the piano as a stringed
instrument. It's really hard to describe, but it's a mix
of Koto and Sitar sounds produced (I'm pretty sure) on
a grand piano, by plucking the strings and using mallets.
He even gets the detuned sitar "bend" sound, I would guess
by using a tuning hammer on the string as he plucks it.
The compositions make reference to the Japanese Koto
style and the Indian Sitar style. 5 (or 6, I'm not sure)
compositions, totaling 45 minutes. I also suspect that
something like an e-bow was used on the piano strings.

Absolutely, unfailingly, mesmerizingly fantastic. I really
hope he releases this on CD.

I'm still working on the digital master. I have some
EQ to do and a bit of editing on one piece that got
chopped at the end. But other than that, I have managed
to produce what I think is a great sounding digital
master from a very weak analog recording, most likely
    produced "at home".

Prepare to have your mind blown if this makes it to
CD... what a great concept, played to perfection by
the master. Moraz is, in my opinion, the greatest
keyboard player in the world today.

A review written by a friend of mine (Dan Barrett) of that VT concert:

A bunch of us went to see Patrick Moraz play last night in Brattleboro,
VT, on very short notice (or else I would have invited you). I don't
know if you know about his recent tour, but it is "intimate" -- anybody
can hire him for $800 to play anywhere at all.

He played in a church on a beautiful Steinway grand with no
amplification, invited the audience (a few dozen people) to gather
around the piano, and even jammed with two of the audience members who
had brought their instruments just in case. He also played the church
pipe organ at the end. Nearly the entire concert was improvisation,
and he played for almost 4 hours!

As a concert, it was a really unique experience. I got a bit tired of
his style about halfway through, but he certainly has impressive chops.
If you get a chance to catch him on tour (he's playing all over the
    place), he's worth seeing.
699.8MPGS::MARKEYThe bottom end of Liquid SanctuaryWed Apr 12 1995 16:1935
I got a call from Patrick last night. He was in Nashville.

The tape mentioned in .5 is not prepared piano, it is an
instrument called a Santor (or something like that). It's
a variation on a hammered dulcimer. If anyone knows anything
more about this instrument, please let me know.

The original recording was made at Patrick's studio in
    Switzerland in 1978.

Patrick was very pleased to hear that I cleaned the recording
up and have a digital master ready to go. He had never
considered releasing it before, but I think he may end
    up doing so now.

He's also sending me more tape from the tour. Patrick said
he was very happy with my earlier work, and was impressed
with my studio, and wants me to do all the editing for the
forthcoming live album. Lots 'a work...

But what I'm really psyched about is where this is leading.
Patrick has some projects coming up over the next year
that I would really like to be involved with, and he seemed
not only open to the idea, but actually pleased that I
would express interest. One of these, is the role/project
    _to die for_.

By the way, the tape from the Vermont show mentioned in .7
is one of Patrick's favorites, and it's part of the tapes
that are on their way to me for editing. I would not be
surprised if at least part of that tape makes it to the
    live CD(s).

Well, I'm glad to here that some good came out of your earlier
disappointments! Sounds like you're getting a better deal out of it than
just hosting a concert. Good luck, and keep us informed!
BTW- has anybody been able to find his new album? I've looked all over
and have only found that it is listed as classical.

Well, it's official, so I guess I can "spill the beans"...

I've been named "producer" for two upcoming Patrick Moraz
albums: a live compilation from the current tour and the
"Santor" tapes (discussed previously in this chain).

I am also the coproducer of Patrick's upcoming album
with Billy Cobham, to be recorded this summer in Rhode
Island. I may end up being the sole producer, depending
on the status of the other guy (Mike Fairchild) who's
    involved with the project...

My first job is to "shop" the project to a label,
so if you know of anyone who might be interested,
    please let me know.

    My Dear Friends,

As you may know, I Patrick Moraz, recently completed my first "Coming
Home America Tour" better known as "CHAT I".

The challenge I set for myself at the time was to bring my music,
especially from my latest CD "Windows of Time", as close as possible to
you, the Fans, and to do so very simply.

Well, I am happy to tell you that "CHAT I" was very successful. We
played 40 dates to audiences of all sizes, small ones to large ones,
and we all had a fantastic time! I was very pleased to see the great
reviews here on the Internet as well as in the mass media. We made
many new friends and were able to re-aquaint with old ones. This was
a real joy, and apart from the Music, proved to be the best part of
    the Tour.

In the last three months, we have received many new inquiries about
another "Coming Home America Tour" or "CHAT II". Now I would like to
take this time to announce that WE ARE GOING TO DO IT AGAIN!

What we are offering is the opportunity for you to book either a
private or public performance in your area at a place of your choice.
During "CHAT I" we played in a variety of places including churches,
halls, colleges, private and country clubs and also in private homes.
The same will be true for this tour. You provide the place and the
piano and I will come to play.

During "CHAT II" I will play not only selections of "Windows of Time"
but material from my solo albums as well as improvisations and new
compositions I have currently been working on. There will also be many
new surprises and innovations on this Tour.

For those of you who were involved in "CHAT I", you probably already
know our operational costs proved to be higher the anticipated.
Therefore our price structure has to change a bit this time around.
For a private gathering of you friends, I will charge a flat fee. For
public concerts, those where tickets are sold, a different financial
arrangement will be available. You can get all the information on pricing,
as well as securing a piano for the performance, if need be, by
contacting Phyllis Weitzel, my Director of Business Affairs, at either
one of the numbers which appear at the end of this announcement.

As before, anyone who feels they don't have all the resources (space,
access to pianos, etc) for a concert, call anyway, we'll put you in
    contact with
people in your area to help you pool resources. We are also working on
several sponsorship ideas for this upcoming tour, and you can receive
information about that when you call. We will also help you publicize
your show through your local media.

The trust and love you have demonstrated to me and for the music I
play, clearly reinforces my determination to bring my art closer to
you and your friends. This a why it gives me great pleasure to extend
to you the opportunity to book your "CHAT II" concerts and recitals
    now.

Please make note of our contact numbers:

Thanking you for your continued support, I am looking forward to
meeting you as well as seeing all our friends again soon. Until
then I wish you all the very best and remain,

Last night, I witnesses the latest version of Partick's
"Chat Tour." The location was Manchester Connecticut,
at an old playhouse. The piano was a 9' Steinway. The
show was sold out; I only heard about the show and obtained
    tickets last weekend.

It was a great show. Patrick was much more relaxed than
on the last tour, and played great. He did material
from "Windows of Time", "Music For Piano and Drums",
"Story of I", "Flags", the Yes "Relayer" record and
    a tribute to Thelonius Monk.

After the show, most of the people left after getting
Patrick to sign CDs or albums, but a few stragglers
remained. Among them was my friend Charles Carpenter.
I told Patrick that Charles was a real player, so Patrick
asked him to perform. For a crowd of about 20 people,
Charles played a nice acoustic piano version of his
composition "Mouse Is A Miracle", which is, in my opinion,
one of the most brilliant electronic compositions ever
written. Patrick was blown away, as was everyone who
remained in the theatre. Then Patrick and Charlie
sat down at the piano and Charlie showed Patrick how
he did the ostinato part of "Mouse" with his left hand.
Then Charles asked Patrick to demonstrate the left hand of
"Talisman" (in which Patrick borrows from Duke Ellington's
"Caravan") and the two had an absolutely BRILLIANT jam
session on it. Charles then retired to a seat and
Patrick went on to put a DAT tape on the house PA system
and played for another hour, jamming with the material
he had on the tape! He even SANG and was clearly in a
rock 'n' roll mood as he kept bringing out his originals
    (which remind me of Asia).

I was down there last night to "do business" with Patrick,
but by the time it was over, everyone was bushed. So,
I need to hook up in the next few days (unfortunately,
the tour is taking him progressively south from here,
so I may not have any option but to jump on a plane.)
The bottom line is that we're still working on putting
together a record with Patrick, Billy Cobham and Jeff
Berlin. Right now we're talking a tentative recording
schedule of december, but Cobham is the sticking point
as he's out on the road with... oh gosh, I can't remember.
John McGlaughlin comes to mind, but I don't think that's
    it...

Also, most of Patrick's current catalog (except Story
of I, which rights don't revert on for another 5 years),
and at least one new album that I have produced for him,
will soon be appearing on my new record label. Details
    soon...

    Ciao,
