698.0. "Dave Matthews Band (DMB)" by AWATS::WESTERVELT () Thu Feb 02 1995 17:07

Just started hearing about the Dave Matthews Band. Globe had
an article today about them, and they're playing the Orpheum
in a sold out show Saturday night. What are these guys like?
    Anybody heard 'em?

I get the impression they span a variety of styles, and fans
are into taping them, but after that I know zilch.

Was just listening to their latest @Newbury's. Dominant instrumentation
seems to be acoustic guitar, sax, and violin. They remind me a little
of Counting Crows, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone more familiar
with them gagged on that comparison. I hear they jam out quite a bit
    live; tamer on record.

    Oh yeah, I liked it!

I just picked up the CD "Under the table and dreaming" and have listened
to it twice. I basically like the music. As already mentioned it's real
hard to categorize; although, to my ear, their roots (not routes) seem to
be in southern R+B (kind of reminds of some Muscle Shoals stuff, and
Mathews' voice reminds me of Eddie Vedder, only nicer. The real strong
part of the instrumentation is the sax, flute, and violin, very melodic
lead lines. I would not consider this CD to be a real rocker, but I do
enjoy listening to it, and there are a couple of upbeat songs.

I'd give it a B+, your mileage may vary.

These guys were on Letterman last Friday night and I thought
they sounded great. Guy's got an interesting voice. Very
    melodic music.
