658.0. "The REGGAE Topic" by VAOP28::Rice (It can't happen here) Thu Jul 14 1994 23:19

Are there any reggae addicts out there other than myself?

The first artist I'd like to mention is Toots Hibbert, the
vocalist of Toots and the Maytals. Toots is unique - he
sings like Otis Redding re-incarnated - and he is still
going strong. I saw him here in Vancouver (May '93) and he
was *awesome*, one of the best shows I've ever seen. He has
been recording since the early 60's.

I am interested in 2 things:

- is he touring? If anyone sees a listing for him, please post it.
- he made an album in the mid-60's that I don't have, and which is
unavailable. It's called SLATYAM STOOT (backwards name....clever,
eh ;). I am desperate for a copy - I believe it was on Trojan, but
coulda been Mango. Is it by any chance available in the States?
If anyone knows how I can get it I will be very grateful.

ROOTS!

Steel Pulse has long been one of my favorite bands.

At least once a month (generally more), Bob Marley's "Legacy" CD ends
up getting some playtime. I also like Burning Spear and Jimmie Cliff
    ("The Harder They Fall" soundtrack).

In response to .0, I've never seen the album you mentioned. Prior to
the release of "Funky Kingston" in the early seventies, Toots material
was unreleased here in the US. Most of the 60s stuff I've seen over
the years from the Maytals is shoddily packaged quasi-bootleg stuff, so
it's possible the album is available in the US in some form, possibly
under a different title. I'd think the UK would be a more likely source.

The MA based Heartbeat label just issued a box of 60s Wailers material,
perhaps a Maytals box will come soon.

Have you heard "Toots in Memphis"? It makes the soul connection pretty
    obvious.

I'm a big Toots & the Maytals fan myself...

Hope all you reggae fans are aware of the "Tougher than Tough" 4-CD boxed
set. A wonderful sampling of both prominent and obscure musicians. Discs
2 & 3 are particularly outstanding. It's hard to imagine there will ever
be a reggae collection to surpass this. Somewhere, I have an online cut
  listing... - Jay

It was his first Trojan release, In The Dark was second, Funky Kingston
third. In the Dark is *amazing*, and it is available now on CD. One of my
all-time favorite pieces of music.

True, but I am now listening to a Maytals 1966-1970 CD that I love. You
can hear the scratches of the grooves, the quality is like 45's, but
the music cuts through anything. What vocals! IMO this is the greatest
male vocalist since Otis. He transcends the genre. I got goosebumps
in the car this morning listening to BAM BAM.

You bet. Get on board the Memphis Train! And a Knock on Wood that rivals
Eddie Floyd. But In the Dark is better ;)

A word about his band. They are the unknown rhythm section of reggae.
The Barret bros (Wailers) and Sly/Robbie got the visibility. Toot's
band was the house band for Leslie Kong (Tuff Gong) and they wrote the
book. Ethiopians, Pioneers, Desmond Dekker, Ken Booth, etc.

It is a great, great set - but missing a few gems (like Message to Rudy). I
have a 4 album collection called The Trojan Story and a one-album collection
with all the Kong stuff. A combination of the 3 would be perfect.

Never, and I look thru reggae racks regularly.

Back to Toots - he is on tour. He will play Vancouver on August 12.
If he plays in your area I encourage you to see him even if you
are not a reggae fan. He is a wonderful performer and his music
transcends reggae, for my money the best act you can see in a small
venue.

Burning Spear remains one of the best. Eek A Mouse had also an
excellent album "Wa Doo Dem", I think. Clint Eastwood And General
Saint, Steel Pulse, The Wailers, Black Uhuru have had all their great
moments. Alpha Blondy is also interesting.

Culture play Soul Rebel? I think yes but I'm not sure.
What is the chord for Sun is shinning by Lee perry?
In the topic 666 I ask if someone know LKJ (Linton Kwesi Johnson)
and if someone know his lyrics, because I'm French and I have a bad
english, I can't understand it.. (he sing in english, in jamaicain, or
    both?)
I like LKJ, his voice and music.
