I am not too familiar with the SAMPLES but like base noter I heard
them play a song on the radio and thought at first it was Sting. (I had
to catch the song on the radio afew times to catch the name of the band
since I had just assumed it was Sting.)
I picked up the CD afew weeks ago called 'the Samples' and I like all
the songs on the album. I guess according to the cover they have 3 other
albums out: Underwater People, No Room, The Last Drag (plus the one I
mentioned just called The Samples.)
They are a nice 'mellow sounding' band. From what I have heard of
their music I have to give them a "thumbs up".

| Just picked up the Last Drag CD a few weeks ago, I like
most of it alot and the rest is listenable.
A few of the tunes to me are obvious fills but even they
aren't 'dawgs' either.
I like best from 'Last Drag'
EVERY TIME (the BIG hit, telecasters all over the place)
Still Water
Smile for the Camera
The Streets in the Rain
When the Day is Done
They're different, and even though I also thought the lead vocal
was kind-a "Sting" like a first, I don't hear it now that
I'm more used to hearing the SAMPLES as opposed to first hearing
them and thinking,, "Sting...????"
The band has a nice smooth sound, and their material is
unique, sort of like REM has "they're" own unmistakable
sound.... in comparison to Sting, they're not quite as
presumptious in there writting as he is
They have been 'around though.. First CD was released in '89
and they have released something almost every year since.
Released work so far..
The Samples (1st May 89)
Underwater People (2nd, November 91)
No Room (3rd, April 92)
Last Drag (4th and most recent, Sept 93)
Looks like they're due for a new one...

| Yeah, I also grabbed a copy of "Last Drag" to satisfy my curiosity.
Very nice, unique, etc (ditto all the stuff Ray said) but I did notice
a certain sameness creep in after awhile; there are several tunes that
overlap in my mind.
One of the earlier CDs has some live tracks on it; I've heard this band
kicks a little more live, might be interesting to check out.
Packaging was very interesting. As I stated earlier, the cardboard outer
sleeves all have track listings for all four CDs on em. This outer sleeve
peels away and becomes a postcard to get on the Samples mailing list.
Underneath is a fully cardboard package job, and one of the nicest
examples of this idea I've seen. The CD sits in a paper sleeve that sits
in a slot. The package itself folds out in several directions and
features some nice painted artwork reproduction. The sum effect is the
closest I've seen a CD come to the old album jacket vibe; I'd like to
see more CD packaging like this.

| I haven't been back in Music for a while,,,
but more Rick's opinion on the Cd Packaging...
Looks like it's all recycled material... Earth-kind and
all that stuff... NO PLASTIC at all...
I too would welcome more packaging like this..
takes up no more storage space than the standard
jewel boxes we're used to...
