what do ya think of Jackson Browne ?

Paul McCartney has a high opinion of him and so am I.

    Let's talk about his records.

Personally, I think he peaked on his second album (For Everyman) and has
gone slowly downhill since. Of course, I'm an old coot and I'm supposed
to think things like that. :-)

Seriously, I do think that For Everyman is one of the finer albums I've
ever heard. I'd love to know who produced it, but no credit was given.
Wonderful guitar playing by David Lindley and pedal steel by Sneaky Pete
Kleinow. Guest vocals from Bonnie Raitt and David Crosby. All in all,
a fine piece of work.

I'd give Jackson the benefit of the doubt and say his third LP, "Late
For The Sky" was still pretty good. I think the overall songwriting
might have been better on "For Everyman" but I like the ensemble sound
on LFTS more. I saw him live between the two LPs and really liked the
show. I remember feeling "The Pretender" was a big letdown.

Of course, for me the big downfall for JB was letting go of David
Lindley. After the third LP, the only one I like is "Running On
Empty", and that's the only other one prominently featuring D.L.

The only time I saw him was when Orleans was warming him up.
Orleans should not be judged by "Dance With Me". They are
one cranking band - great dual guitars too!! So they close
with "Let There be Music", running around the stage, great
    	harmonies, etc...

Then JB comes out on a stool with an acoustic!!

While I like his music, he was blown off the stage that time.

This isn't a slagging note, btw - he just picked the wrong
band to open for him. Orleans his very UP and he's, er...
    	not UP.

I used to listen to his music a lot, but after Running on Empty, (and
    the subsequent radio jam-the-music-down-your-throat-approach) I didn't
listen as much as before...I like his early stuff too, "Saturate Before
Using", "Late for The Sky" "For Everyman" and "The Pretender" I think
    were his best albums.

I always liked the line "I'm gonna find myself a girl who can show me
what laughter means, and we'll fill in the missing colors in each others
paint by number dreams" at a time when I was just getting into
songwriting, I thought that was a great line...still do actually.

I met Jackson at the Marriot in Worcester, July 1983, he was very cool,
hung out with a bunch of folks for a while, got his autograph, asked
him a few questions, he was very giving of his time.

I've seen him twice in concert, the 1st time was at Tanglewood, August
of 1978, and the folks sitting on the lawn decided to storm the shed.
well, JB didn't particularly like that move, and asked folks to sit
down, played a song, and when the insanity continued, he basically read
the riot act "I'm not gonna play anymore, until everybody F#$*&N sits
DOWN !!!" well, as folks sat down, he waited, then continued....I always
    liked that about him

plus, he co-authored Take It Easy, ok, overplayed, but a classic anyway
521.6Tender is the nightHGRD01::QAThu Oct 21 1993 03:2014

Another hit of his is "Tender is the night".

I can't recall the name of the album where this track is from
but the other songs from the same album are good as well.
But I can recall the album cover was a man on a boat facing
    a full moon.

I always think "Running on empty" album was his prime, don't
know his early stuff were that good (am I missing something ?)

Jackson Browne's new I'm Alive is due from Elektra on October 26,
and insiders are saying it's his best effort in years. Old mate David
Lindley appears on a couple of tracks, and other special guests include
Don Henley, David Crosby, drummer Jim Keltner, Mike Campbell and
Benmont tench of the Heartbreakers, Valerie Carter, X-pensive Wino
Waddy Wachtel and Jennifer Warnes. Scott Thurston, who co-produced
Browne's last album, World in Motion, co-produced this disc as well.
Said to be a return to Browne's sensitive singer/songwriter roots - as
opposed to his political leanings of recent years - I'm Alive consists
of "I'm Alive," "My Problem Is You," "Everywhere I Go," "I'll Do
Anything," "Miles Away," "Too Many Angles," "Take This Rain," "Two Of Me,
Two Of You," "Sky Blue and Black," and "All Good Things." Those who have
heard the album are raving about "Sky Blue and Black," a six-minute opus
that some feel will become a signiture tune like "The Pretender" or
    "Fountain Of Sorrow".

For Everyman is still one of my favorites, even after all these years.
I really liked the "now-you-see-him, now-you-don't" album cover.
After playing hard rock all night, I often pop in this tape for the
ride home from the gig (I can't stand listening to R'n'R after playing
it all night... need something completely different). Every song on
this album hits home in some way (I couldn't possibly pick a favorite).
Saturate Before Using, Late for the Sky, The Pretender and Running
on Empty are also "EXCELLENT". After ROE, he got too "politically
aware" for my tastes. I have heard that this new album is very
reminiscent of his early stuff (although, I'm sure it'll cost a bit
more than the $4.50 I spent on Saturate in 1974??... still has the
price sticker on the shrink wrap...)

I was there at that Tanglewood concert in '78, great show, terrible
security. I also saw him around the same time at the Boston Garden.
    Excellent concert, terrible venue.

I've heard he faced some setbacks in his personal life.
Another prove that when your unhappy you are the most creative?

My wife wants to have 'For a dancer' played at her funeral (although
she' not planning to go yet...).
It's a great song from a great album.

    >>>I've heard he faced some setbacks in his personal life

Yeah, his wife committed suicide shortly after the birth of
their son. He had previoulsy written a song about her called
"Ready or Not" ("...my baby's feeling funny in the morning, she's
having trouble getting into her jeans"). After her death, I saw
him do a show where someone was screaming for that song. He stopped
between songs, singled the "screamer" out and made it very clear that
he would never again perform that particular song.

The death of his wife occured almost twenty years ago. The Pretender
album was his response (more or less) He had been living with actress
Daryl Hannah up until a couple of years ago.

i heard it alleged that he beat her up but it
was never proven. i don't think he was charged
with anything. it was noted in the legitimate press
that she accused him but i never saw anything about it
    after that.

do you hate him because of his music or because
    of his 'alleged' wife-beating?

I still like Jackson Browne. The Darryl Hanna incident didn't change
my mind about him. The way I see it I have no idea what really
happened anyway. First, she claimed he beat her up, but she never
actually pressed charges, so who knows what went on. The last album I
liked was Lives In The Balance, though.

Also, from what I read, she didn't leave him *because* he beat her up.
She left him because she wanted to date John F. Kennedy, Jr., and when
she went back to get her stuff out of Jackson Browne's house, she
claimed they got into a fight and he beat her up.

I seem to recall pictures of Darryl with bruises, but I may have seen
those in a check-out line... Lots of women fail to press charges when
they're more than entitled to, though, so I don't think that proves
anything one way or the other.

I like a lot of his early songs - they really expanded the variety of
music I was experiencing at that time. I haven't got as much out of
    his later efforts.

I liked Lives in the Balance too, but like so many albums that have topical songs
on them, it doesn't hold up as well as some of his ither work. It is certainly an
angry album. I think that might account for the fact that many people didn't like
it as well. The songs are, as you might expect, very well crafted, and the
arrangments quite good. I also like Running on Empty, and other of the earlier
albums a lot.

The little item reported earlier about his new album sounds good. I'll look
forware to picking it up.

JB played the first of 3 dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London last
night and was brilliant. Best of the 3 times we've seen him. The band
played without a support act doing an hour, followed by a 15 min
intermission, then another hour and about 20 minutes of encores. If
they hadn't put the lights up after the second encore we'd still be
    there.

Very eclectic choice of songs. We checked the CD collection when we got
home and reckon he has about 90 songs to choose from plus odds and
ends, and he played 27 of them. From memory:

I'm Alive All but Everywhere I Go & All Good Things
World in Motion World in Motion (a la Pop Staples, very gospelly)
    			 I am a Patriot
Lives in the Balance In the Shape of a Heart
    Lawyers in Love Nothing
    Hold Out Boulevard
    			 That Girl Could Sing
Runnin on Empty Runnin on Empty (brilliant)
    			 Rosie
    			 Load Out/Stay
    The Pretender The Pretender
    			 Linda Paloma
Late for the Sky Late for the Sky
    			 For a Dancer (both marvellous)
For Everyman For Everyman (stand out of the night)
Take it Easy/Lady of the Well
    Jackson Browne Doctor my Eyes

Others: Somebody's Baby (at the request of a call from the
    					  audience)
One I can't remember the title but it starts:
"I was sittin' by the highway..."

He said he would do Song for Adam on the third night after persistent
    calls from the audience.

Brilliant - catch him in the US if you can, he's back on form.
