520.0. "The Velvet Underground / Lou Reed" by NRSTA2::PHISH::clark (Can you picture what will be?) Tue Oct 19 1993 12:37

I've always loved "Sweet Jane" so I figured I'd check this band out ...
bought "The Best Of" a short time ago. Great stuff. A band ahead of its
time IMO.

Whatever happened to Nico?

Nico died in a bicycle accident a few years ago.

After leaving the Velvets she recorded a series of solo LPs that
were, eh, odd, to say the least; many of these have John Cale providing
musical and production support. At least two are out on CD ("Chelsea
    Girl" and "Marble Index").

She may have been the first person to record a Jackson Browne song. He
worked briefly as her guitarist when he was just a teenager.

I am familiar with a few Lou Reed albums, but not familiar at all
with VU....anybody have an opinion as to what the best VU album is?

Oh, probably most people would side with most critics and say, "Velvet
Underground and Nico". (Of the original albums...)

(I have my own compilation tape of the stuff I think is most interesting...)

The Sunday 2/25 Globe had an article in the movie section
about a new flick called "Nico Icon". Said to be opening
in Boston tomorrow, I don't know where. It's a documentary
of Nico. Sounds pretty interesting. Interviews with the
likes of Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Jackson Browne,
Paul Morrissey.. (not Lou Reed). Some early VU clips too,
    apparently.
