505.0. "The Good Rats" by DREGS::BLICKSTEIN (DOS Boot) Fri Oct 01 1993 21:41

Turns out that we had a number of Good Rats fans that contributed to a
Good Rats note in the last version of the MUSIC conference, so I
    thought I'd start another.

The "news" about the Good Rats is that "Rats To Riches" is supposedly
now out on CD and I know for sure that "Tasty" is out because I have a
    copy.

For those of you who are wondering who the Good Rats are, you could
describe them as the best band from the tri-state (NY/NJ/CT) area
never to have really made it.

They were EXTREMELY popular in the clubs, playing mainly sold out and
    packed shows wherever they played.

The recorded a number of albums:

"The Good Rats" (almost impossible to find)
    	"Tasty"
    	"Rat City in Blues"
    	"From Rats to Riches"
    	"The Good Rats - Live"
"Great American Music" (not sure of this title)

(I may have missed an album in this list.)

"Tasty" is widely regarded as their masterpiece. It's one of the few
albums I cast the term "superlative" upon, but "Ratcity" and "Rats
to Riches" are also great albums and the live album is a great
introduction to the band, as well as capturing them in their best
environment (live, as opposed to the studio).

The classic lineup thru the live album was:

Peppi Marchello - lead vocals and main songwriter
Mickey Marchello - lead & rhythm guitar, vocals
John Gatto - lead & rhythm guitar
Lenny Kotke - bass and vocals
    	Joe Franco - drums

Franco is IMHO was one of the worlds most underrated drummers at the
time. I actually waited til the END of his drum solo to go to the
    bathroom.

The cover art to 'Rat City in Blue' was priceless. Are they still
    together, BTW ?

No, but I did meet Joe Franco at a drum clinic a year or so ago and he
said that they do hold a reunion concert pretty close to every year
    in the NY area.

I'd definitely love to see one of those, but I have no way of knowing
    when they take place.
