    Anybody caught the Murphy Brown show with Barry Manilow himself ?
    It was hilarious. Murphy can't stand Barry Manilow and her son
    loves him and Frank invites Barry over for the little guy's
    first birthday party. Murphy, going over the CDs, not knowing Barry 
    is listening to her, "Barry Manilow Live, now here is a nightmare".
    
    When I was a teenager my dad once brought home a Barry Manilow
    vinyl (hey, be gentle, I didn't buy it myself) and it had this
    song on it:

    finding it hard to do anything

    Before anyone writes him off completely they should listen to the
    "Paradise Cafe, 3:00 AM" album, which proves he is capable of far
    more than the schlock he's noted for...

    I agree with Edd. Paradise Cafe and another similar album make
    good late night background music.
    
    And although the listing of hits in .1 was fairly exhaustive,
    one should also include "Mandy", "I write the songs", "Copacabana"
    and "One voice" among the songs-you-wish-you'd-forgotten.
    
    Lale, however, still seems in need of a minor lobotomy. ;^)

    Whenever he appears on one of the talk shows (usually The Tonight
    Show), I always make a point of catching him. His stage sound is
    *mint*. I don't think I'd be able to hack one of his live shows though.
    Check Tower Records for hit list. He's been around fora long time.
    Didn't he used to do music for TV/radio commercials ?

    I believe the famed McDonald's "You deserve a break today" jingle is
    Barry's.
    
    His shining moment for me is his contributions to the first two Bette
    Midler LPs.

    Barry Manilow did write the McDonalds jingle and many others (sorry
    don't know the others)  He was also the opening act for Joan Rivers for
    a few years in the 70s
    
    I think he gets a bad rap, I'm not sure why.  I do know "Weekend In New
    England" brings back memories of a fabulous time in my life :^))

    Simple, most of his stuff is "schlock".
    That doesn't mean that he can't sing, or play, or write. He just
    chooses to do that style & the musical elitists bash away. Try
    listening to him & pretending you don't understand a word of English.

    I agree with Brian. Manilow's arranging and playing on the first Midler solo
    releases is excellent, and contributed to Bette's earlier campy musical
    persona significantly. Hey, it's not together unreasonable that given 
    another turn early on, he could have had Paul Shaffer's career.
    
    The man can write and he can certainly play.  Although I can't stand him 
    myself, 'Paradise Cafe' is an eye-opener.

    There is nothing wrong with Barry.  Mom loves him, Dad loves him, I
    love him.  Now I don't have any of his stuff but that is cause I do
    have company over every now and then and how do you think that would
    look?
    
    I did catch that MB with Barry.  I died!  It was soo funny.  I have a
    friend who loves him.  I will have to get her in here to sing his
    praises.

    That Murphy episode was really good. I thought it was cool that he
    acknowledged the mass dislike towards him and the bad reputation.
    He played along. He had fun with it. It was neat.

    barry is touring this summer and will be at the minnesota state fair in
    late august/early september.
    
    i did see him once back in the early 80's. the show was ok.  but
    reminded me of a vegas lounge act.

    	At Great Woods, a young lady got up and sang a tune at the
    	piano with him. According to reviews, she sang well and knew
    	the tune cold.  After the song, he presented her with a video
    	cassette of what just happened.

    I've been reading these notes and I just HAVE to ask......did Barry
    write/sing the PEPSI commercial in the late 60's, i.e. YOU GOT A LOT
    TO LIVE....AND PEPSI'S GOT A LOT TO GI...IVE!  It sounds like his
    style and as far as I know, he's never told anyone which cola company
    he wrote for.  
    
    I think his bad rap comes from the fact that he admitted early in his
    career that he didn't write many of his songs, but rather rearranged
    songs written by others.  I don't care for his "schlock", but I don't
    care for Anne Murray's either.

bottom lesiure suit...  Hooooo-laaaaaaaa!  8^)

Actually, there are a few times I've seen him on the talk shows,
doing solo stuff...... as much as his albums disenchant me, he
never leaves a dry eye in the house..  schlock ????  Maybe,,,  but 
the boy has charisma.  

hell,, he sings a shlock-load better than I ever will,
and has more fun money in his jeans pocket then any of us 
will  see in a life time..

like Uncle Pete always said..

    I think he got that bell bottom leisure suite from Elvis.  Now THERE
    was a man who had the worst taste in clothes.
    
    I have to admit that when I was around 20 and had no taste in music
    I liked BM.  But as I got older my taste definitely improved.  I do
    have a few of his albums but I haven't played them in about 15 
    years.  
    
    If anyone would like these albums I would be more than happy to give
    them to someone who would enjoy and appreciate them.

    I read an interview of Barry Manilow a couple of years ago, and he told
    the interviewer that he was at a party once and Bob Dylan walked up
    to him and said, "You changed my life."   Manilow said he was "touched"
    by that.  If the story is true, I think Dylan has a far better sense of
    humor than he's usually given credit for.  (meaner, too)
