429.0. "Is it time for a DECjam?" by DREGS::BLICKSTEIN (My other PC is a Mac) Fri May 21 1993 13:53

With all the depressing things that have gone on recently, I wonder
if it's not time to do something to compensate.

I'd like to see if interest can be revived in the old "DECjams".

We haven't had one in years, so for the benfit of those not familiar
with DECjams, it's a structured jam featuring several bands of (mostly)
DEC employees. Each band does one set (about 30 minutes) of material.

Basically, you rent a place, rent a PA (or use one of the bands) and
just do it. These were GREAT fun in the past, both for the
non-players in the audience, and the musicians actually playing.

What's more is that it's a chance to associate more than just a
node-name and and account name to a fellow noter, but a face and
    actual music.

We started doing these in 1987 and there was generally one a year
up until about 91 or so.

The first priority after determining that there's interest, both in
terms of being enough bands and enough people interested in attending,
is to find a person who is willing and able to basically put it
together (and I am NOT volunteering at this time for that).

Respond here. I really hope this gets rolling.

    Dave,

Turquoise would love to be there. If you can find someone to pay for the
transportation and accomodation ;-) Or you can just use your power to
arrange the DECjet for us. It flies, every weekday, from Bedford to
Ottawa at 5 pm and from Ottawa to Bedford at 6:45 pm. It can transport
8 people at a time so 2 trips would be sufficient, we are only 14
    people ;-)

Perhaps the DECjam has died a natural death.

I must say that when the attendance died down after the first few,
I was dissapointed; if musicians can't count on other musicians
to be supportive, who can we count on.

When this issue was raised before, many noters gave the "But Saturday
is the day I give the dog his flea bath" excuse. They couldn't bother
making an effort to support a fellow musician.

Anyway, I have video tapes of most of the jams and I still watch 'em.

I had forgotten about that, but yeah, I know remember it was JUST
    like that.

And we were talking about something MONTHS in advance - like people
couldn't adapt their plans three months in advance to give the dog

It hit me as a distinct "not interested" back then.

Methinks the jams suffered from over-exposure.

The first one was an unqualified success, the one at Worcester Center
was pretty cool, but after that they all just seemed to run together
    into obscurity.

Since the one in Hudson in 87, there's been another in Hudson (91? the
last one, anyway), one at Marlboro Fish and Game (90? 89?)...did I miss
    one?

My take on it: It became too much of an "event", what with the
complicated process of trying to arrange for audio and video taping,
etc. It's not the same as going to Lollapalooza, after all. It's a
chance to match faces to names and hear people play instead of reading
    about it.

Oh yeah, the other reason there's been less interest: $$$$ It's pay to
play, with the bands pitching in for the sound system and site rentals.
The organizers try to do it on the cheap (like try to find a sound crew
of DECcies who'll do it for free or substantial discount) but once it
gets to be about $10 a band member to play, it starts being less
attractive...we are talking about less than an hour in the spotlight,
    after all.

If people really wanna jam, it's easier to have a half dozen folks show
up at the local blues jam, plus it's free. besides blues is what's
    happening these days 8^)

I wouldn't mind doing another (even organizing it, db) but only if
there's sufficient interest. Considering past history, I'd guess that
if we started organizing now, we could maybe make it happen in late
    August.

The big problem with the jams was cost$$. I was told that more than
once the organizer had to kick some extra dinero to be able to cover
    the total cost.

429.18The "twist" can be doing something a bit "creative"DREGS::BLICKSTEINDOS BootWed Jun 09 1993 20:2636
    > A new "twist" must be found..

    I agree.

I think part of the problem for the disinterest is it used to be that
DECjams were an opportunity to play for people who often didn't get
such opportunities. I get the impression that these days people
have lots of such opportunities (including me).

And thus, the "twist" for me these days is to be able to do something
DIFFERENT from playing with my regular band. I did a DECjam with
Lourdes and Stevie Klosterman as a one-shot thing and it was really
GREAT because I love Lourdes's stuff but can't imagine any other
circumstance where I would have the chance/opportunity/time to play
    with her.

And I did one with Deceptive Resolution (Buck, Kev McD, Joe Jas,
ShawnH and Mike Santos) and that was tres cool because we got to do
the music that I love the most (progressive rock) which is something
you couldn't get away with in most clubs as well as something I would
never get to do with my regular band.

And even if you can't/won't play outside your regular gigs...
I'm thinking of trying to get the boys (and girl) of my regular
band to do a DECjam but do stuff we don't normally get to do, or at
least stuff you'd never expect to hear at a DECjam. I.E. something
that would be fun and different for the band.

So what's the point: perhaps the "twist" should be that people should
look at a DECjam as an opportunity to play with folks they haven't
played with before, do music they don't normally get to do, and without
any of the hassles of agents, club managers, coming up with 4 sets of
stuff (only need one and you can toss 30-40 minutes of stuff together
    pretty quick), etc. etc.

I'm new to this game, but I agree that a "new twist" is what's needed
    from the sounds of it.
Here's an idea that is probably *different* from what anybody had in
mind for DECjam, but I'm curious what people think. My guess is that
there are a *ton* of musicians that could do these things, but most
don't have the time, interest, etc.

How about putting out a "DEC compilation album" ?

I'll pause for the lauhgter to subside...

OK, I'm not gonna wait any more.

If people who play/sing/write songs got together at various times &
places to do recordings of their own stuff, cover tunes, with mostly
DECies or "DEC bands" as performers & got it all on decent tape, we
could then put out an album that people who couldn't make the rigorous
schedule (or non-musicians if there are any left) could actually
    purchase & listen to.
Presumably the proceeds from the album would cover all expenses.
This is obviously a more ambitious project than getting together to
play a set, but it could be HUGE.

429.21Good Idea, But...TECRUS::ROSTI need air freshener under the drumsThu Jun 10 1993 13:5634
    Re: .19

Noters in the COMMUSIC and GUITAR notesfiles have done cassettes over
the years (14 in all, the fifth GUITAR tape just came out). These are
NOT pro quality releases! There is no restriction on what is submitted
(the only limitations are space is awarded on a first come-first served
basis, and the total length of a submission must be 15 minutes or
less), so it ranges from badly recorded to radio-ready, with the
playing also being all over the map. These tapes are made available
for the cost of a blank tape from the (volunteer) compilers.

As compiler for two COMMUSIC tapes, I can tell you that interest does
come from all over the company (I have sent a few copies to Europe for
instance) and many of those requesting copies are read-only types. The
number of tapes shipped out is small; other than copies to the
submittors, I think I've shipped out less than two dozen copies total
of the two tapes. I have no idea how many more copies were distributed
by those people making dubs for friends, but it's still a small
    audience!

These tapes were not intended to be for sale. The quality of the
recordings and issues of copyrights, etc. prevented that.
Manufacturing and distributing an album of this nature is certainly
possible but not cheap, and the potential for *losing* money is great.
By comparison, there is no money invested in the COMMUSIC and GUITAR
tapes...the compiler has to spend a few bucks for a tape to master to,
that's the only expense. I have been involved in recording and
releasing a few *real* albums, the guitarist in my band owns the record
company we record for. I have a reasonable understanding of what goes
into getting an album made and if we can't get a jam going I doubt
we're ever going to see an album happen! Sorry if I'm sounding
    pessimistic...

While I love the idea, and have stuff I would love to see on it, given
what I know of what's involved in production (time, effort and costs)
I have to agree with Brian.

I'd do it, but I'll bet you'd end up asking contributors for a sum of
money to finance it that would be more than most would be willing to
    pay.

You also need one person (you?) who is willing to manage the effort and
I'd guess that's about 40 hours time (believe it or not).

db - who "produced" 3 of the COMMUSIC tapes
429.23Set up at someone's house?USABLE::GOODMichael GoodThu Jun 10 1993 16:2219
I know that I would love to use a DECjam to try out some rock singing
as opposed to the classical singing I do during most of the year, and
since my regular gigs are over for the summer this is a great chance to
do it. But given the intensity of my non-summer schedule, I don't want
to make it any big deal.

So something like the jam at Rik's from long ago could be a lot of fun.
(I tried singing then, but I'm better now.) Maybe 1 or 2 bands could
set up at someone's house, and other folks could come by to sit on
and jam on some of the tunes. The bands would get to play with folks,
folks would get to play with the bands, and the logistics would be
pretty simple (as long as we can find someone with an appropriate house
willing to have us that's convenient for the interested bands). The
"house bands" could post typical set lists so that the "guest artists"
could know what to brush up on, but there would be no need to stick
    just to those lists.

I'd like the chance to sing a few tunes with db wilfred, for instance,
and I know several of the tunes in their repertoire already...
429.24DVN unplugged ?SUBSYS::GODINThu Jun 10 1993 17:4310
A (or several) "house jam" sounds doable. What I'm imagining would
require a little more space than my basement rehearsal area though. I
think the ideal setting would be outdoors in someone's backyard, but
the location would have to be remote enough so that none of the natives
would complain. That would solve the problem of having to pay for
space, if that is a problem. What kind of audience attendance did the
previous DECjam's draw ? When are the (edited) video tapes going to
appear on DVN ? If the AXP's catch on with the new DEC Sound, maybe we
could all just sample it in & post it on the network ;-)

Hell it did! There were probably 500 people there towards the end of
it (in fact, that estimate came from a cop I talked to), but the thing
is most of those people were MIT students, not DECies.

At the time, that was definitely the biggest crowd I had ever played
to with a band (i.e. not counting classical piano recitals/concerts).

    > The 3rd, FallJam at the Hudson Elks was marginal.

Actually, I think it was probably almost as big as the 1st, but being
that it was in such a larger hall it may have seemed that way.

The two DECjams at "Texas" in Woosta were probably about 200 people,
and then I remember the one at FaG's in MR being perhaps a tad more
    like 250.

Only thing is, who knows what it would be like today. I'd guess much
less due to the layoffs and general disinterest.

429.33DEC JAM 93 ????ELWOOD::CAPOZZOHe who hits first winsFri Jun 11 1993 13:2129
OK, heres my go at a DEC JAM '93'. I don't know if you remember but I
along with Megel organized the Dec Jam at Worcester Center. I thought
it was a great jam, it gave people a chance to be on a real stage with
full lights and sound who don't normally play in this type of setting.
The crowd at the time was great (around 200 people). So I have a
proposal, I will organize a Jam of the same type if we think we can
draw a crowd and if there is a intrest to do so. So write back to this
note a lets see what kind of intrest and support there is at Dec these
days. I know its hard to get up for a Dec funtion these days with all
the lay offs but what the hell.

If we get the responce here is what I recommend.....

o 5 bands (first come first to play when its a go)
o A Sunday starting at 6:00 ending at 10:00 (time is
                  debatable)
o Place is Sir Morgans Cove Green St Worcester.
o Cost $0000000 (No cost to anyone)
o Full lights and sound.(soundman included, we do our own
                  lights)
                o Over 21 only

So let me know, if it looks like we can draw the intrest and the
crowd then by all means lets do it. But if it looks like 20 people
will show up then lets have a jam at a sit in blues club.

Depends - Citadel I think is very much in the spirit of what I
    mentioned.

Also, the plan I suggested with db wilfred is to do something
entirely different from what we normally do which is also included
    in what I mentioned.

One thing I think would be cool for db wilfred is to do each song
with a different "guest". Like Mike Good on one tune, and TomD
on another (hey, wanna do a Larry Carlton tune with us?)

Anyway, the thing is, I don't think we'd be interested in doing it
if it was just "yet another gig" for us. My interest in it is really
the opportunity to do something "special".

With NO slam directed at Dave or Ellen (who were great to work with),
if nobody remembers our performance that night, then time has healed
    the wounds.

I'm sure len agrees it was the singular WORST performance the DTs (ha!)

Hi kids!

Man, it's been a zillion years since I've tiptoed into Music
notes....

(I'm with Edd, Tom, Mike, Rick, Len,, (Ron//Sue,,,) Hi boyths!!)

I would like to cast my opinion in for a September date as well..

Summer is gonna be tuff to get enough disciplined work together,
we all wait for this time of year to go places and do things,
getting together is gonna be hard....

This is my first DECJam,, golly, I'm so excited...

Alan Starr and myself have hooked up and talked about doing some
Foghat tunes, maybe even a tribute show Alan has suggested. We need
a bass player and a drummer though. If there's a guitarist who is
willing to split the set, I'd be willing to do some bass too.

Don't be bashful! I ain't no wizard, just looking for a good time!

Lorna, I guess I should thank you for "conditioning" Fred for me.

See, Fred and I are in a band that practices at my house. I have
a very beloved cat which I would never let outside for fear of harm
coming to him or him just getting lost.

Problem is, this cat is very good at "escaping" and I absolutely panic
when he gets out. And the usual circumstance where he gets out is when
people are over, particularly musicians who open and close doors a lot
    while moving equipment.

But I must say that in the nearly 4 years I've been in a band with
Fred, I have no recollection of him ever letting the cat escape.

I now realize that I owe it all to you and Rik. ;={()>

This is to inform everyone of the status of the 1993 DEC JAM.

Where: Sir Morgans Cove, Green ST., Worcester Mass.

              When : Sunday September 26th, from 6 to 11pm.

Volunteers : This is the list of volunteers to date.(more welcome)

Tom Tomg : Video & Still Photography

Sound & Lighting: Will be provided by the club. Its a mega P.A and
light show. There may be a small fee involved
depending on the attendance the day of the show.
I will look into this one.

Format: Five (digital) bands, solo acts welcome. Each band
will play a 40min set with solo acts used for
extra time fill. There will be a house drum kit
that I will supply, I'm still looking for a bass
cab we can use (any takers).

As far as bands go I would really prefer to keep
this a old time dec jam, what I mean by this is
I would like to see bands put together with
other deccies for a one time deal. This will
keep it from being a band showcase and leave it
up to you to bring people together to have some
fun. For example, myself along with 3 other
noters have formed a band just for this one day,
we all have other full time bands that could play,
but that would be to easy and boring. So lets
get back to the roots of the dec jam and have
                      some fun with it.

First five bands who reply to me with this concept are in,
     band number 1 just replied.

                Alan Starr Vocals, Guitar
                Andy Foster Vocals, Guitar
                Dave Hickernell Vocals, Bass

Thanks to everyone for the overwhelming interest in playing
and participating in the DECJAM 93. So far I have had more than enough
bands offer to play, I wish there was a way that all could jam but we
only have so many hours to pull this off. Below is a list of the bands
who have replied, the names of the people in the bands and the order of
which they replied. I will try to extend the number to six bands and
keep the remaining bands on the list encase of a cancellation. Again
thanks to all for making this easy.

Also to protect myself as well as others I would like to add a
disclaimer. This is not a Digital Equipment Corp function or will Digital
be funding it. This is a private party run by the noters and will be a
night club gig like any other gig you would play in. I am not responsible
for your actions before during and after the event. And like always when
drinking use your head, let some drive who doesn't drink.

I would like to put out a request that would make this a even
greater event. Anyone think they could draft Charlie Farren a fellow
noter to MC the Jam, or maybe play a couple of tunes???????????

Well if your band is on the list that Megal updated you are in, we will
go with seven bands. If any changes happen to your status please
let me know ASAP so I can fill your slot with another band. Still
haven't heard from Charlie Farren, sure would be the icing on the cake

       26 days and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok people lets get this thing off and running. I haven't heard much
as of late, we need to spark up the interest and make this Jam happen.
I should be receiving fliers that you can post at work and anywhere else
you want to. This is a good time to start telling friends and relatives.
It looks like there will be seven bands starting at around 6:00PM,
please try and limit your sets to 30mins, with a 15min stage change
between bands, this will take us until 11:00PM. I will be providing the
Drum kit, this will be a five piece kit, drummers are welcome to bring
their own cymbals however they will be provided (go easy on them). Andy
Foster will supply a house bass rig, for the rest, your on your own but try
to keep it simple for fast set changes. Alan Starr is working on some
DECJAM '93' tee shirts with the DECJAM 93 logo on the front and the
bands names on the back, all shirts will be one color and one size
(Xlarge), not sure on the price (Alan will post a note, right Alan??)

I don't no about the rest of you but our band White Noise is ready and
very psyched!!!!!

Below is the time slots, send me mail if you would like on a
possible time, if this gets to confusing I will pull band names out of a
hat.

I've played in a couple of DECjams and been to several more. My
recollection (and you other veterans feel free to correct me on this)
is that if someone isn't strictly enforcing time slots things will get
out of hand quickly. Even at the jams where this was done, there was
still unavoidable slippage. It's like one of those basic laws of physics
or something; sets always want to run over.

    Just something to think about

I talked with the Cove and we can play as long as we need to, but I
would like to keep things flowing so I would not mind if your sets went
an extra five mins or so but don't over do it (PLEASE). I also would
like a volenter to put together a program, we could list the event,
the day and the bands with their names of members and maybe the set
    lists, (ANY TAKERS)???

Also I would like to ask one last time for each band to send me a list
with the band name, members, Dec employes or not, and set lists so we
can enter the info in the program. Please do this ASAP. Please check
    all spelling of names.

We have flyers thanks to Jim Carroll, I will be sending them out to
the band reps this week, if anyone else wants to post some up drop me
a line with your name and mail stop and I will send them to you.

Just about *anything* can be put into this program - some suggestions
off the top of my head are:

    - Give us a little bio on the band and/or members
    - State future dates you'll be playing together
    - State if you are looking for a band or for a new member of your current
      band
    - Any other personal information...

Given the fact that it will probably be one of the bulkier pieces of
gear on the stage, I would be willing to donate my Leslie 145 for the
use of any other keyboardists that use an organ. I have the the 147
pre-amp with standard 1/4" jack input, foot switch for speed control.
I could also donate my Yamaha 4115H for keyboard monitor (synths), but
I suspect that someone else may have something a little cleaner in
    sound (and smaller!).

    	o Roland RD-330 88 weighted-key Digital Piano and two-channel MIDI
controller. It has 3 piano sounds, 2 elec. piano
    		sounds, vibraphone, clav, harpsichord

o Ensoniq SQ-80 SYnthesizer - main sounds I use it for are
organ, strings, solo moog, wind, but if you need something
in particular, I may be able to provide

o Roland U-220 Sample player - has lots of vocal samples,
orchestral instruments, a drum/percussion kit, etc.

o Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus Stereo Amplifier - 120 watts.
I'm willing to go through someone else's amp as long
as it is clean and produces good sounds. The JC-120
does have the advantage of having a killer chorus effect.

o Kawai 8 channel line mixer with two effects sends, a stereo XLR
PA feed and line outs to the JC-120. If you have
all your sounds in a rack mount, you might want to just
bring your rack, stack it on top of mine, and plug
in thru mine. That will definitely minimize set change
time, PA-dude headaches cause we can get it all setup
before the 1st band comes on.

re: t-shirts

I'm making up about 50 t-shirts for this event, keeping it as simple as
possible. They'll be on good quality white t-shirts, all extra-large;
it's gonna have some sort of music-oriented logo on the front, and on the
back will be a listing of the bands along with date/location info. Price
will be approximtely $7.00/each (they're being sold at cost, there's no
profit involved here).

No need to make reservations or orders, I'll just sell them at the show
to whoever wants them. (I assume most band members will want one each, so
that's going to probably cover at least half of them. Hopefully others will
be interested also (so I don't take a bath on them 8^).

Hi Lorna,

Basically, I really didn't want to get into the t-shirt business. I wanted
to keep it as simple as possible, rather than taking orders and collecting
money up front and all that stuff. For the majority, extra large are fine
since either it will fit or be over-sized, which most people don't mind
(hey, just think of MC Hammer! 8^).

Sorry, I knew when I made that decision it wouldn't be perfect for everyone,
but it still seemed the best overall...

entertainment guy) who may come down and do a story - she did say they
will at least put a notice in about it.

Things are really happening now folks!!!

The word is spreading about the jam and fast, thanks to all the help
I have been getting. Now its up to you, band members as well as people
who are planning on attending, we need your support. We have about
30 people just in bands if each of you brings 5 people with them thats
150 people, now we have a crowd. I feel the more people we have the
more fun it will be for you on stage, there is nothing better than
playing to a full house. Remember admission is FREE so what better
thing to do on a Sunday at 6:00. Also there is free parking across the
    street from the Cove.

Again Thank you all who are helping and lets keep the fire burning.

We've got not one but TWO members rushing back (independently) from
    NYC for this gig.

We may not only be doing it without violins, but also without drums!

And my keyboards are flaking out big-time: my SQ-80 synth is in the
shop with a flakey keyboard problem, but fortunately our bass player
just happened to have a spare of the same model.

And now, my weighted keyboard has an important key that is sticking.
An annoyance, but I am still able to play the things I need to play
so long as I don't let the stuck key mess my head up too much.

We're rapidly heading towards a "Citadel unplugged and a ca pella"
    set. ;-)

I just keep reminding myself of those immortal words from that old
movie "Westworld": "Just remember, nothing can go wrong, go wrong,
go wrong, go wrong, go wrong,..."

Let me be the first to thank everyone that helped pull off a fun
DECjam; Mike for his masterful job as organizer and M.C., Joyce for the
programs and PR, Alan for the great shirts, and fellow DECjammers for
the "house" drum kit and bass rig.

Oh yes, and it could not have been the "Ken Steinhardt Band" that was
there, as THE SPELLING on the T-shirts is different(!).

    I don't know about y'all, but I had fun.

White Noise and Citadel particularly smoked, I suggest catching the
various projects that these people play in if this was any indication.

And yes, late tonight when I get back from briefing Gartner Group and
Meta Group on the upcoming Digital announcements, I'll post the lyrics
to "VAXman" and "Alpha", by popular demand.

What a great time! For me the highlights were VAXine, Citadel, the
two women singers, putting names with faces, performing and, of
course, scalping a couple of tickets to Lale and db. %^) Seriously,
"VAXman" and "Alpha" were a howl, Citadel was effing *awesome*, and
all the bands were very enjoyable.

As a bass player, I was struck by the variety of bass guitars being
played - I thought everyone except me played a Fender! Alembic, Guild,
Gibson, Fender... and what was that work of art Joe Jas was playing?
    Sounded good, whatever it is.

Thanks to Mike Capozzo for organizing the whole thing, Alan Starr for
the tee shirts, Tom Gallo for the video, Dave B. for the concept, and
Dave, Ken, Andy and Rob for lending their gear. And of course, to Buck
for lending Andy his amp, and again for not showing him how to crank it.

For those who want copies of some (or all) of the video I shot
at this year's DECjam, listen up. ;^)

I shot the entire set for each band, except for the last band,
where I got the entire set except for the last couple of songs.

Those people who want copies, send me a mail message at
        ahlem::tomg.

To limit the amount of copying I need to do. I would prefer
to make a single copy of each band's set and have the individual
bands make their own copies of the VHS copy. However, if you
really want a first generation copy from the original Hi8 source,
I can probably accommodate your request.

For others, I can make tapes on an as needed basis.

Now the important part. I expect it will be about $5 per tape
copy. This price covers the cost of the blank VHS (used for
the copies) and 8mm (used to make the original recording) tapes.
You can pay me in advance, or when you receive your tape,
        whatever you prefer.

One last important note. My VHS deck is in the shop. It will
be a few weeks until I can produce the copies.

I had a *great* time playing this year and would like to thank
everyone who helped put it together for '93! Db for the idea of
it all in .0, Mike C. for the organizational work and patient_with_us
MC'ing, Alan Starr for the keepsakes and the folks who so kindly provided
the gear (It's a *lot* easier leaving the bass amp at home) to play
    on, with and through.

I had to miss the last three bands which was unfortunate for
me! I'm sure I'll catch the performances on video, as I believe
Jeff, our stage left guitarist, also was taping last night. From what
    I read, I'm in for a treat!!

Since there's a couple people in "Twisted Reality" who cannot
write here, I'm sure Steve and Shawn wish to say thank-you also to
the folks who's efforts made this happen and that they too appreciated
muchly the chance to get to play.

    	Till next year then,

I know this has all been said already, but I really want to thank
everyone who organized and performed at the jam. This was an
outstanding evening of entertainment for those of us who didn't play,
but got to pose as an audience (and, wasn't that Mary Hart doing
interviews at the end of the evening, it'll be on ET tonight, right?).

The depth of talent hanging around in these notesfiles is awesome. I
enjoyed all of the bands, all terrific! The highlight of the evening
for me was hearing two astounding versions of one of my all-time
favorite songs, Mustang Sally (Dave, your vocals were great!).

I am looking forward to DECjam 94.

Hello All. I was just recently introduced to this conference, and
decided to attend DECJAM '93. It was wonderful!!!!! I had a great

Well worth it, and making plans to attend next years session also.

429.205Great stuff!!USPMLO::DESROCHERSTue Sep 28 1993 13:2520

I was there and I was very, very impressed with every band!!
The level of musicianship was outstanding. The improvement
of folks that have played before was really noticeable.

The sound system was excellent too - everything came out nice
and clear. The drums kicked and the bass was really punchy
and tight for all the bands.

What struck me most was the song selection. These weren't
piece-of-cake, anyone-can-play-it tunes. These were very
	advanced, technical tunes!!

And it was good to see those that I knew and also meet some
	new folks!

Really terrific!! Congrats to all the bands...

	Tom
429.206Man, these things are ALWAYS so much funDREGS::BLICKSTEINDOS BootTue Sep 28 1993 13:5947
I had a great time. Every band sounded great... "pro" as they say.

This may have been the best DECjam I've been too. I also thought
that the song selections were just killer. Every time I thought
I might go out for a breath of fresh air, it seemed that the band
kicked into an old favorite of mine ("WHITE PUNKS ON DOPE!!!!!")

Can't even count the number of times I turned to someone and said
    "We gotta do that tune!".

One suggestion I'd like to make for future jams. DECjams are NOT
really just a chance to play and see other people play. It's a chance
to meet people you note with.

In that regard, I'd like to suggest that we cut the canned music in
between sets and thus, make it easier (and encourage) people to talk
    and what not.

Thanks to Mike Cappozzo for allowing me to "propose" this without
actually helping (much) on the organization.

BIG thanks to the two sound guys. So often you deal with sound guys
who seem like they always got up on the wrong side of the bed. These
guys were nice, helpful, etc. When I mentioned that we could use
triggered drum samples instead of mic'ed drums (after they had already
mic'ed the drums), I kinda expected a "SHit... don't bother me."
What I got was more like "Hmmm... sounds cool, let's give it a try".

And IMHO, the drum sound was DAMN good all evening - and (at the risk
of pissing Rob off), I can tell you that it wasn't the kit because I've
been the engineer on many recording sessions with that kit and IMHO,
it's not a great sounding kit acoustically.

Big thanks to the members of Citadel - I feel very fortunate to be
playing in a band that does the kind of music that dominates my
listening and record collection. I also appreciate the application of
their talents and enthusiasm to this despite busy individual schedules
and committments to other projects. Brian commuted from Worcestor to
my place in Hudson, NH where we rehearsed. I found out on the long
drive home, just how much dedication that takes!

Big thanks to Lale for driving down. It was great to finally meet you.
I wish we had more time to speak with each other and no, I'm not
talking about debating about scalping. Next time you're down here,
I'm definitely going to be there for the "Meet Lale" dinner.

429.208The drums: were they live or PCM-based Memorex? ;-)DREGS::BLICKSTEINDOS BootTue Sep 28 1993 14:1837
    > The drums kicked

I thought I'd mention for people's interest that except for the first
and second set, most of the drum sound was coming from samples and
not the acoustic kit. Basically everything but the cymbals and
half the snare (i.e. snare was mix of live and sampled).

Don't know if anyone noticed that one of Rob's tom's sounded like a
woodblock, even though Rob didn't have a woodblock. ;-)

Rob and I MIDI'd his kit and used a Roland TD-7 for the "brain" and
    the samples.

I also thought that the drums were great - it was the first time we
had really used the MIDI stuff live to any real extent. There were
    problems:

o Converting the kit from a 5-piece (which everybody but Rob used)
to an 8 piece (which Rob uses) in 15 minutes
o Having never used this stuff for anything but recording, we found
out there were "false" and "double triggering" problems that
only occur when you play at stage volume.

But by and large, it worked out pretty well and those problems are
    solvable.

Anyway, thought you folks might be interested to know "the easy way"
to get great live drum sound. ;-)

    	db

p.s. By the way, another advantage to sampled drums is that your
    	 sound guy will love you.

"OK, let's see, we'll need two mics for the basses, 4 for the
toms, 1 for the snare, a few stands, run a snake to the board....
what? You mean all I have to do is plug this into the board?"

dave, make that a 9 piece :'). definately a killer sound though! as
far as the acoustic sound goes, the sound guy can do alot. i also do
not like the sound of them on tape, but they sounded great at the show
    we did at Ralph's.

Wow. What a night ! Great music plus meeting those I have been having
hot discussions with.

Each band and each musician exceeded the expectations. Digital not
only has excellent people, products and services but it also has
excellent musicians. No wonder we have a product named DECadmire ;-)

White Noise people; that was the best Mustang Sally I ever listened
to.

Dave Hickernell, you look so young. Did you get carded at the door ?
The "stiff" remark you made earlier in mail, well, it was true ;-) But
we discussed it in this conference before, bass players can't dance.

Dave Blickstein, what a charming man. Nothing like the image he is
trying to give in the scalping topic ;-) Big smile, positive attitude,
great musician. I was not prepared at all when I met db. Alan and
I were walking towards the club when this down to earth, young fellow
yelled "Alan Starr, he exists !". And Alan said "guess who this is". I
couldn't have guessed.

Alan you are terrific on stage. Or am I biased ? Thank you very much
for helping us with the trunk problem. Thanks to you too Randy. I did
not get a chance to meet you, but my husband said that you were a real
nice person. We locked the keys to the apartment in the trunk and if
it wouldn't be for the two of you, we would have had to go to a hotel.
Thanks a lot for all the effort.

Joyce, it was very nice meeting you. The program was neat but there
was a shortage of it. Could you please send me one ? Do you still
remember my mail stop ? OTO-7/1. Are those natural curls ?

Lorna, we couldn't talk about men, it was too loud. But we will have a
lot of time to do so in a couple of weeks when we see eachother again.
It is "food, shelter and antique rings".

Tom Desrochers, how did you know I was me ? Thanks for introducing
yourself. Everybody looked much younger than I expected. Beautiful
people.

Slash k, you are nowhere near the b.b. you introduced yourself as ;-)
There is a VAMPIRE notes file ??

Andy, I did notice the fashion statement you were trying to make with
those shoes but don't think that you are the first or the only. I do
that sometimes too, when I feel particularly good ;-) But why did you
keep on stomping on Dave Hickernell's toes ?

It was nice meeting you Lance, Citadel's lead vocals. The only person
who looked just like I pictured was Brian Markey. Lance, Brian fills
the stage, you should get a bit aggressive ;-) Dave Blickstein is a
lot of fun to watch too. Dave, I am very pleased to meet you too. I
travel to New England quite often, we will meet again and get a chance
to talk. I second that suggestion about the music in between bands.
The noters would have more opportunity to talk.

I loved all the bands. It was a fun night. Great organization Mike.
Thanks db for coming up with this idea. Looking forward to DECjam 94.
Maybe next time I will be in one of the bands too.

It was a wonderful time, thanks to all. Definitely worth the trip.

Good idea about no music between sets - or if there is music turning
the volume down. I had a great time bouncing around meeting and
chatting with everyone but it would have been easier between sets with
    little or no music.

It seemed to me that the owner really liked the whole setup and enjoyed
himself so maybe DECjam 94 could be held at Sir Morgan's again?

i think the tubes did 'white punks on dope'.
429.229Yes, and YesMSBCS::STEINHARDTWed Sep 29 1993 20:5137
Of course the Tubes did WPOD, but yes, there was a version of WDOP out
a bunch of years ago, but I don't remember who did it.

As for taking things on the road, the inspiration for songs like VAXman
came from a now defunct underground Digital band that I used to be part
of which was called FUBAR. We used to play at district sales meetings
in the field, performing intentionally-recognizable music with
exclusively Digital-specific lyrics, with particular focus toward field
oriented issues (sales, software services, field service). Our objective
was to insult everyone (especially our competition, occasionally our
senior management), and to make the personnel people very nervous.
We eventually got to the point where we had two full sets of material.

We would intentionally play with only at most two days of practice, so
that we would not be confused with a serious project...

    The band was:

Dave Metz, guitar (Sales Executive, Minneapolis)
Scott Dicks, bass (ex-DECie today, a former Account Group
    				   Manager)
John Crouch, drums (ex-DECie today, a former Sales Rep
    				    from Des Moines)
    		Ken Steinhardt, keyboards (still here)

We used to encourage guest participation. One of the more memorable ones
was by a Sales Manager who had rewritten the lyrics to Smoke On The
Water to be a roast on the AS/400, and proceeded to scream out the
vocals with extreme body language to a terrorized Digital audience.
It was killer, you had to be there...afterwards we started calling
    him "Sid" (Vicious).

Digital could stand some more of this.

   Hey Lale,

Your right! My fashion statement in footwear was not new (think I first
mixed shoes in '76)! I admit I saw somebody do it, I forget where!

The reason I kept jumping on Dave's feet; it's the only way I could
make him move on stage %^) I was going to 'check' him, but he didn't
have straplocks on his guitar strap ;^)

Tom Gallo, I didn't recognize ya! I think you used to teach at
Bedford, no?! I sat next to ya the whole night saying "Gee that
guy looks familiar!" I do want a tape, although I have a feeling
there's more 'mistakes' on the tape that what I did live 8^o

Greg House, you're flyin' out next year pal!

Thanks to all the bass players that used my amp...for not blowing
it up (I need it for the Wedgewood friday ;^).

Alan may get mad at me for telling this story but I have no choise,
    I just have to tell:

We arrived to the club. Alan introduced us to db outside the club.
We all went in. Some time later, someone asked Alan who db was.
At the time Mike Capozzo was on stage announcing a band. Alan,
pointing at Mike, said "right there, on stage". I said "Alan, db is
not on stage right now". Alan, while still pointing at Mike, said
"yes he is, he is the one talking".

    me: Alan, that's not db
Alan: Remember, I just introduced him to you outside, that's the one,
talking on stage, right there, that's db

This went on for a couple of minutes. Alan was being really persistant.
He keeps on showing Mike who is still at the mic talking.
I finally located db down on the floor amongst the audience and said
"Look Alan, the real db is right there". Alan turned around, looked
at the place I was pointing at. Saw the real db. He turned back to us
    and said "*DUH*".

(no, he had not had any drinks yet, I was together with
    him all day long)

    Andy,

> The reason I kept jumping on Dave's feet; it's the only way I could
> make him move on stage %^)

It didn't work that well ;-)
I analyzed this problem a bit. I came up with this theory: Very tall
people like Dave cannot move as comfortably as us, the normal human
beings. There is a girl in our dance troup, she is 13 and she is very
very tall. She dances with absolutely no grace. It is more like waving
her long limbs around than dancing.

Dave, I hope you don't mind my picking on you. You were fantastic
Sunday night. It is just that, it's so much fun talking about that
night, now that it's over :-(

Probably because my feet are so big.

I guess you've never seen Tommy Tune. Or Michael Jordan.

Nice theory, but I'm afraid it's more a case of "Help, I'm white and
    I can't get down!"  I've never been able to dance or move rhythmically;
I consider myself lucky to be able to pluck strings more or less in
    rhythm.

   >Dave, I hope you don't mind my picking on you.

Not at all, as long as you pick on Droid, too.

More photos are coming (of bands following white noise).

Downed a couple o' frosties and watched the DECjam vid last night, cool! Tom
did a nice job, the audio is even decent (the vocals were a little low but
that's a trademark of The Cove not Tom). Being that tapes never lie, I'm
not gonna sing much lead next time (esp not on Aerosmith toons %^). Guess
I should practice on guitar about 200% more too (tho watching Buck makes
me want to quit (%^o 8^).

Can't wait to show my brother what he looks like wearing a mustache and
playing bass (Joe Jasnieski, ya really look like him)!

A message from Tom Gallo...

*********************************************************************

I'm sorry to report that I don't have any photographs of
any bands after White Noise. It's not that they didn't turn
out, rather I just did shoot any. ;-(.

Many apologies to those expecting photos.

Those of you still expecting photographs (that is *before*
Citadel), could you please send me a mail message with your
photo requests. In the confusion surrounding getting the video
completed, I lost track of who wanted what photographs.

        Sorry for the confusion. ;^)

    re: Metropolis "same band"

Well, it's not exactly the same band - we have a permanent bass player
    now.

    re: Metropolis "from DT song?"

No, we won't be doing that song, although we've kicked around on it
a bit in practices. Perhaps sometime in the future.

Also, depending on whom you ask, the band's name comes from the famous
silent movie "Metropolis", not the DT tune.
