388.0. "Looking for a good wedding music..." by ISTWI1::YEGEN () Tue Mar 30 1993 11:32

My brother will have a wedding next month in a big hall. He wants that
a music should be played while he and the bride enters the hall.
The music should start before they enter into the hall and should be in
a slow rythm and not loud and the volume should get higher after they
enter into the hall maybe a chorus should start to sing.

A good example of that kind of music might be Carmina Bruno or Reach
Out performed by London Philarmonic Orchs., but of them are usually
played during the weddings over here in Turkey. So we are lokking
    something different.

I would appreciate any other suggestion,

    Best regards,

I often play at weddings and one recent request which really seemed
very nice was for me to play "Pacabel's Canon" on classical guitar.

    Merhaba, Tansu-bey!

There is a song called appropriately "The Wedding Song" that is sung at
a lot of weddings here in the States...the only problem I can see is in
the first couple of verses, which refer to Christian beliefs. ( I guess
it depends on how much English is understood. The rest of the song is
wonderful, with lyrics telling how a women leaves her mother and man
leaves his home, becoming one together. Hey, even without lyrics, the
song is nice enough to play at a Turkish wedding, since everything else
    is so simple and beautiful.

RE .6: I think I have lyrics and sheet music for "The Wedding Song"
somewhere at home, for anyone interested. If memory serves, it was
originally sung (and written by?) Paul Stukey (I'm sure I've flubbed
spelling his last name), of Peter, Paul and Mary.

I sort of guessed that! I'd been meaning to send you a note when I saw
you name...it just sort of "looked Turkce". I spent a year near Gemlik
(Sahintepesi) over 20 years ago, but I still have fond memories of the
people there. By the way, when I would go to a party or other
gathering where I was a stranger, everyone would sing a song that went:
    " Doktor, doktor, geevannah....geevannah(sounded like that)...what does
    it mean? Cok mersi!

    P.S.

I was medic in the Air Force; hence, the name "doktor". Ciao!

    Chuck,

I heard Carmina Burana on Ford Taurus commercial. Brilliant idea.
Now I like my Ford Taurus even better.

    >That is my very favorite piece of classical music....ever!

Ditto. Some people are writing music like that and I am trying to
write system implementation plans. How inferior can you feel.

About the greeting you were getting in parties:

Doktor Civanim, Doktor Doktor Civanim ...
("c" is pronounced like "g" in English, so it would be something like
    givanim, like you guessed)

Civan means brutally handsome man. So I guess they liked you, huh ?

That is a very popular song about a lady in love with her awfully
good looking (also, young, strong, honest, brave etc) doctor.

And, of course I have seen Celik Palas.

I never thought I'd buy another Bach. And the fact that I did is all
	your fault Dave ;-)

I have heard about Pachelbel's Kanon before and when I read your note
about it, I was compelled to purchase it. Of course it comes with Bach
	and Handel, an inevitable combination.

The CD I bought is sort of like Greatest Hits of Baroque and I don't
even like Baroque music. But the Kanon is really nice.

	I shop, Therefore I am !

ps: Although I am not a Bach fan, I still like Magnificat because of
the choral work and I think Magnificat would make good wedding
music. But of course nothing can beat Carl Orff's Carmina Burana,
	wedding or not !

Thanks for the info, Lale. As I inferred, I've waited YEARS (!) for
the answer. Not only did they obviously like me, they were INCREDIBLY
ACCURATE!!!! I was lucky enough to meet a couple of teenagers while
there only 24 hours, so they taught me the Turkish alphabet and how to
count....I tried to explain how my name might be spelled in Turkiye,
but they just laughed...my guess is that it meant something "dirty"!

I got married in August, and we did things "different". We were married
on a boat, the Tahoe Queen, at Lake Tahoe. Karen walked down the
"aisle", and we walked back down the "aisle" to "Peaches & Diesel" by
Eric Clapton...a nice instrumental. Our big reception was back here in
Mass 3 weeks later (wth my band The Shakerz as entertainment) and our
first dance song was "Oh My Love" by John Lennon.

"Jesu" is a common wedding march.

Actually, I played at a friends wedding last spring and did both "Jesu"
and an arrangement of "Pachabel's Canon" (also on your list) I came up
    with for classical guitar.

While I was organist at our church, those two (Jesu/Canon) were always my
favorite wedding pieces. Never did either for "the walk," but *always* for
prelude. I'd sprinkle the "fillers" among those and other wondrous pieces.

Those were also the two which people at the wedding always seemed to remember and
ask about afterwards. Great classical music for people who don't (at least think
they don't) like classical music...as well as for those who do.

I think the weirdest thing I ever played for the post-wedding march
was the Rossini seguing into "Take Me Out to the Ball Game".

The bride heard me practicing the Rossini (the traditional song that
is played after the wedding) but I was sorta in a goofy mood and
segued into "Ball Game". To my utter surprise (and dismay) she
said "I want you to do that at the wedding."

At the time I thought nothing of it, but as the ceremony was taking
place I was thinking "everyone in that audience is going to look at me
and think I've gone crazy when i play this" so I ALMOST started making
up a little sign that says "this is what Heather and Bob wanted me
to play, it's not my fault, I'm not crazy!".

I was hoping that someone could help me. I am the vocalist at a
Catholic wedding on June 4 and the person who was to help me with the
songs has not been very cooperative. What I need is for someone to
give me a list of songs that can be done at the ceremony. The can not
be popular, they have to be songs that are permitted in the Catholic.
(I know there's a word for that, but I can't think of it!) Anyway, a
list of songs and where in the ceremony they are done would be a great
help. I need then to order the music and get working with the organist
on them. I appreciate any help you can give me. If you would like to
call, I am at DTN 225-6801.

    Thanks!!!!

How about telling us what style you prefer? In the relatively modern
tradition, two wonderful pieces are Noel Paul Stookey's "Wedding Song"
(though I think it sounds pretty lame on anything but guitar) and "The
Gift of Love," which puts verse based on Paul's Gospel to the tune of
the folk tune "There Is A Ship." (some call it "The Water is Wide.")

As far as where in the service the songs go, my experience is that the
folks getting married should decide, or the priest/minister if they
    have no preference.

    Hi, Cheryl:

There are many many hymns that can be sung at a Catholic ceremony. Best
thing to do is meet with the bride and groom to select which hymns you
    should sing.

Most churches have a Music Book in the pews. That has all the songs
that are commonly sung at that church. Some music books have hundreds
of hymns. You might want to call the church and ask to borrow a copy.
This will give you some idea of what to suggest at least.

Secular (is that the right word?) songs are not permitted. The wedding
song by Paul Stookey is lovely, but I don't think it's allowed. Of
    course, I could be wrong.

Alot of the Catholic weddings I've been to use "Ave Maria" before
ceremony. That's the only hymn that comes to mind.

    Good luck! Kath

    Hi again:

I have asked this in the Wedding file also. Can anyone recommend a
good band for my sister's Wedding in November? She is looking for a
band that is FUN, is versatile playing all sorts of music like Line
dance music, waltzes, polkas, Top 40 and Rock, but doesn't cost a
fortune (as in over $1,200). And, it has to be a band, not a DJ.
Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.
