376.0. "Delbert McClinton" by OTOOA::ESKICIOGLU (My other piano is a Steinway) Mon Feb 22 1993 17:50

It is a wonderful thing to be in love and listen to Delbert McClinton.

Are there any Delbert fans out there ? I would love to hear some
comments on his work before "Never Been Rocked Enough". I know he
recently celebrated his 30th year in music, so it is a shame not to
know anything about some of his earlier stuff. I listened to an
interview with him on the radio a while ago and he was saying that he
was a total unknown until he won the grammy with Bonnie Rait last year
    for "Good Woman Good Man".

It took me some research to find the name of this artist singing
"it's like rolling a seven every time I roll the dice". I heard that
song on the radio last spring and it was spontaneous love. I kept on
asking everyone who the performer might be. Everytime it was on the
radio I was missing the announcement. One day I called the station
and sang that line over the phone to the dj and he gave me his name.
It is a fantastic album (never been rocked enough) and I love every
    song on it.

He was the guest star for Lynyrd Skynyrd last fall and I went to the
concert more for Delbert McClinton than for Lynyrd Skynyrd (although
they were great too). I was shocked to see his one leg in plaster when
he walked onto the stage, he had broken a bone in his foot or
something. It was such a dissappointment that he had to sing while
sitting. It was still worth it.

If anybody has got anything to say about him, I'd love to hear.

    Keep Smiling

    Lale,

There's a top 40 hit from around '63-'64 that goes

        Heyyyyyyyyy, heyeeeee baybeh
        I wanna know-whoa-whoa
        If you'll be my girl

That's Delbert playing the hamonica part.

If ya want a CD that'll make a Delbert fan for life outta ya,
buy "Live from Austin". Made from an Austin City Limits
performance some years ago, it's one of my all-time favorites.

Also of interest would be "Best of Delbert Mclinton"...got
some studio versions of some of the cuts on the abovementioned
    live album.....great stuff!

Gee, he wasn't an unknown when he had that top 40 hit about ten years
ago, whatever the heck it was...on the MSS/Capitol label. How about
those great sides for Capricorn and ABC, Delbert used to joke how
signing him was the kiss of death because every label he was on went
    out of business soon afterwards.

Ron, I won't be at ease until I find that song that goes
    "baybeh, I wanna know-whoa-whoa...".

In the concert he said that he taught John Lennon how to play the
harmonica. He said that John was hanging around him to learn that
stuff. (Off the topic, which John Lennon songs have harmonica in it ?)

You have given me enough reason to go out and buy "Victim of Life's
    Circumstances".

    today.

Another *great* cut from Del can be found on the Alligator
Houserockin' II CD...."The Choking Kind". (note that I don't
know if/what of his albums this may appear on). This cut
features Roy Buchanan on guitar; what more could you want? :-)

ref .1 Delbert is not local, he's from Texas (Ft Worth maybe ?)

ref .4 I agree "Live from Austin" is a must. I read one
review that said "if the world was fair, this would
be Delbert's Greatest Hits Collection LIVE"

ref .5 His big hit was "Giving It Up For Your Love"

I recommend *anything* he's recorded. All top shelf stuff in
    my opinion.

One neat story - Awhile back we were at Johnny D's in Somerville, Ma
seeing Delbert and I was talking to him at the set break. I had his
latest C.D. at the time and asked him to sign it for my son Matt. He
asked how old Matt was and I pointed to my wife's belly and said
about minus 3 months ! Delbert signed it to Matt, and said I was a
cocky $%&^# ! Matt arrived 3 months later (should have had Delbert
    *date* the autograph !!!)

Two years ago, I needed one more trip to put my frequent flyer
mileage over 100,000 miles (which I wanted to fly my wife and I round
trip, first class to Hawaii for our 15th aniversery). I decided to
go to Austin, Texas for the weekend. I decided this destination
because I'd never been there and I love the music that comes out of
that town. I went alone, didn't know anyone there. I ended up seeing
alot of great live music and had a terrific time.

When I arrived, I picked up a local paper to see who was playing in
town that weekend. One of the people I saw listed was Delbert, whom
I had seen alot on TV (TNN) and had one of his CD's. He was playing at
the famous blues club "Antone's", where people like Stevie Ray Vaughn
    have been regulars.

Antone's is a fairly small bar with a good sized stage. The show was
FABULOUS. The band was superb, they performed with their music, not
lights, dancers etc. They were a musician's band. Delbert was terrific
and probably lost several pounds during the show, just from the sweat
and effort he put into it. An unforgettable show. I expected to see
Delbert with a few local musicians, but he had a big tour bus parked
outside that was almost as big as the bar! I big, full band, horns and
    all.

I have alot of live recordings of him on Hi-Fi VCR, recorded mainly
from shows on TNN (The Nashville Network) which is where I became a
fan of his. It's strange how this guy is mainly known in country music
circles, even though he is primarily hard driving blues. Even though I
have seen him alot on a country music TV station, I have never heard
him on any radio station, country or otherwise (except for the rare
play of 'giving it up for your love' on an oldies station).

I have the "Live from Austin" CD, which brings back good memories,
but doesn't have the full impact of seeing him live. Do so if you can.

I'm glad Delbert gets the recognition he deserves, despite the fact
that he gets virtually no air play, due I'm sure to the fact that he
is not easily categorized into todays commercial orientated radio
    formats.

I was reading that there was a Delbert McClinton album scheduled for
release at the end of July.

Anybody to verify this and if so whether this is a new one or just a
    re-release...?

    Thanks, Tom.

I have an amazing photograph of Delbert McClinton with Beatles. It must
be from 1962. Left to right, Pete, John, Delbert, Bruce Channel, Paul
and George. They are all incredibly young of course, especially
Delbert, I didn't think he once was young too ;-)

Anyway, what is so hilarious about this photograph is, there is a
lady's foot (bottom of her high heel shoe) sticking out right between
the legs of Delbert McClinton. You can't see the lady in this photo but
her foot (in kicking position) parallel to the floor, crossing out
between Delbert's legs is awfully funny. In another photograph, we see
this lady, she has beehive hairdo and apparently she is with Bruce
Channel. Her identity not revealed in the book.

Back to Delbert and Beatles: The book says that Delbert played the
harmonica on Channel's hit "Hey! Baby." and John picked up a lot
of tips from him and used them to good effect on their first record
    "Love Me Do".
