366.0. "John Hiatt" by WBC::DEADY ("...that's as green as it gets...") Sun Feb 07 1993 18:35

There is a song performed by Country/Western singer Suzy Bogguss
entitled "Drive South" on her latest CD. The song was written by John
Hiatt, and I have heard it performed by at least one other group, a
"modern rock" group. The song sounds like a Little Feat or Lowell
George type product. I have searched my albums, CD's and tapes and
cannot find John Hiatt mentioned anywhere, yet the name sounds so
    familiar.

Does the name John Hiatt sound familiar to anyone else? What
band/bands was he in, or was he strictly a writer?

    		help..
    			thanks in advance,

    Fred,

John Hiatt is one of my favorite songwriters/performers. "Drive South"
is the opening track on his "Slow Turning" album, which is one of his
best albums. Although Suzzy does a nice job covering it, Hiatt's own
recording is head and shoulders above it (in my opinion). Bonnie Raitt's
"(Are you ready for this) Thing Called Love" is another Hiatt tune from
    his "Bring The Family" record.

I highly recommend "Slow Turning". If you like that one then I suggest
you check out "Bring The Family", "Stolen Moments" and "Little Village"
which is Hiatt, Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe (his band on Bring
    The Family).

When I saw him onhis Slow Turning tour he gave a performance that was
absolutely riviting. He was the opening act for Robert Cray and the
crowd was relaxed and mellow when Hiatt hit the stage. By the end of his
first tune (Memphis In The Meantime from Bring The Family) the crowd was
on it's feet and SCREEMING. Although I didn't even know who he was
before this show, I was no exception. It was the most amazing thing I've
ever experienced at a concert. I've never seen anybody take a room from
dead cold to hysteria in the course of one 6 minute tune.

RUN, don't walk and pick up Slow Turning as well as the CD prior to
that (I forgot the name) both are EXCELLENT. He voice takes some
getting used too but both CD's are way up there on my favorite lists!
He's music is influenced by many tpyes of styles ie; Country, Blues
    etc...

    Ron & Bart,

Thanks for the quick replies. I am not surprised by John Hiatt's
writing of "Thing Called Love", I am very impressed by his ability to
produce great lyrics. The songs mentioned previously all have a smooth,
flowing sound to them. I will look for Hiatt's "Slow Turning" CD.

Kelly Willis also does a nice version of this tune. In fact I like it
    better than the Hiatt version.

YES, Kelly Willis has a GREAT voice. Her emotion and range are
very moving, I'm very suprised she is not more popular. Her rendition
of "Not Afraid of the Dark" on her Bang, Bang album gives me goose bumps!
She did open for Dwight Yoakam last year, what a great pair. I am glad
that country music is becoming stronger, a lot of credit must to to cable
TV and TNN (The Nashville Network) specifically.

That's a darn good question, Fred. Dunno.

Varies from store to store -- rock, pop, folk.

Same for a lot of other singer/songwriters straddling pop & folk
traditions; not to mention those straddling various combinations of the
above, plus country, bluegrass, blues, R&B, ...

I like what the Schwann catalogs do -- if it's not classical, jazz, or a
special interest category (children's, Christmas, electronic, musicals),
it goes into a catch-all pop listing that embraces all pop & folk
permutations (even marching band music), & all nationalities.
Kind of captures the true condition (& richness) of music in the 20th C.

A new John Hiatt album is on its way to you neighborhood record store. I
missed a track by this |<---->| much this morning on the radio called
Perfectly Good Guitar. DJ said its from his forthcoming album.

I also read recently that Rhino is issuing a collection of Hiatt
covers by various artists. That might already be out.

I did get a listen to the track "Perfectly Good Guitar". Actually, from
the chorus, it's "(Smashing a) Perfectly Good Guitar".

It's got power chords in it, al la Neil Young and crazy Horse.

Last weekend it was expected to be available in the Dutch shops on
    August 24.
I'll get my copy next weekend. It got a very good review in a Dutch
    music magazine.

Hiatt's performance in CT last night was broadcast live on WHCN
Hartford. The mix was very good and I captured it on tape. Show ran
about 140 minutes. His band, the Guilty Dogs, feaures at least some of
the same players on Perfectly Good Guitar, most noteably guitarist Mike
Ward whose playing I find rather tedious after a spell.

Hiatt's voice sounded a bit strained for a while but in the second half
seemed to get stronger and even out. There were a few tunes he had
trouble with, but all-in-all he was in good form. Some of the older
tunes like "Memphis in the Meantime" have been given a new treatment.
After hearing him do it with the Goners back in '89 or so, I'd say it's
not particularly for the better. The Goners opened the show with that
tune and brought the house down (on the first tune of the set!). So
that's how good *they* were. He opened with a nice version of "Drive
South", which was fairly true to the original Slow Turning arrangement.

From the sound of the crowd, it sounded like everyone was having a real
swell time. So get your tickets today!

Saw his Berklee Performance Center show in Boston Sunday night (hi
Bart!) and enjoyed it immensely. This guy clearly loves live
performances. Only complaint (read: very minor) is that the mix
favored Ward's lead which was overpowering at times. Hyatt is a great
rhythm guitarist and I missed this in the mix.

Highlight for me was "Blue Telescope", "Buffalo River Home" and "Slow
    Turning".

He dedicated "Permanent Hurt" to John Bobbitt.

Ward's guitar is overbearing in the mix I got off the radio and he tends
to way overplay on every song. Too bad. Now *I* would be a good pick for
Hiatt's band. Say, what if Ward got clubbed in the knee...nah. He is
suited for tunes like "Paper Thin" and "Something Wild" but not tunes
like "Child of the Wild Blue Yonder".

Mercifully, Ward was subdued during "Blue Telescope" and "Buffalo River
Home," which were both very nicely done.

Missed Hiatt on the Conin O'Brien show last week, but if you're a Hiatt
fan there's a sweet little treat from Bring the Family awaiting you in
the middle of the film True Lies.
