333.0. "Michael Welch" by SMURF::LONGO (Mark Longo, USSG) Thu Dec 03 1992 15:13

Last night on the 11pm news on Boston station WCVB Ch 5 they did
a peice on a local blues guitarist named Michael Welch. They showed clips
of him playing at the openning of Dan Ackroyd's new blues club in Cambridge
and elsewhere (Johnny D's I think). He also sings in a beefy barrelhouse
style. He lives in Lexington. The human interest angle to the story is that
he's 13 years old.

	At first I thought: "I don't care if he's 13 or 113 years old. I only
care how good he his." Well, believe it or not, from the short clips I saw
he was *very* good. His guitar playing was fluid, yet rhythmically interesting
and his guitar tone was excellent and fit his style very well. His beefy vocals
were odd to here coming from a chubby 13 year old, but closing your eyes they
sounded world weary and substantial. He says that his vocals have radically
improved in the last 6 months since his voice changed(!!!).

Anyway, he sounded like a well styled blues musician that is far more
seasoned than his 5 years of playing and tender age should make possible. And
regardless of any age considerations, he's worth hearing.

The report says that record deals are in the offing but his parents say
no records till he graduates college, (yeah, sure Mom). Has anyone seen this
guy?

I haven't seen him myself but he and a 15-year kid from the area play
regularly at the blues jams at Johnny D's on Sundays. He was also
written up in th Globe. Wonder who his publicist is?

I saw some of the Blues Bros. footage with him and was quite impressed
with his playing. I think .0 did a good job of summing it up.

I've jammed with him at Johnny D's.

I think he's "advanced beyond his years", but that's different from
being the next Stevie Ray Vaughan, which is what I think this kid
    sorta wants to be.

He also struck me as a bit of a ham; he sorta "took center stage"
during the jam which is regarded as "inappropriate" at these things.
