Well, as the self-designated "Freedom Rocker" or "Vice-president
of the 70s Preservation Society, I feel compelled to remember
the "old" Bad Company.
I have vague memories of 1974-75...crappy music on
the radio...Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting...Disco Was King,
Elton John was mega...wondering how the hell "The Night
Chicago Died" ever made it to the airwaves..
In a time of great musical hopelessness, came a faint voice,
"One, Two, One, Two, Three... BOOM-DACK
...and that glorious first power chord of "Can't Get Enough" sliced
through the crap like a hot knife, no, like a LASER, through butter.
Salvation! It was great. I didn't have a driver's license at this
time, but neighbor did, and he had approximately two 8-tracks to
listen to in his mom's car, and the Bad Co. album was one of the
two (Aerosmith "Get Your Wings" was the other) and we spent most
Friday and Saturday nights cruising around ingraining those two
albums into our skulls.
It is still one of my favorites today, primarily, I suppose, because of
Paul Roger's voice. I liked Mick Ralph's playing, but my interest
in Bad Co. led me back to Free, and I thought Paul Kossoff was
a great player. Free and Kossoff, in turn, led me even further back
to *real* blues, and I remain glad about that.
Bad Company peaked for me very early...like after the second album.
I thought the lyrics and syn-drum of "Rock and Roll Fantasy" were just
stupid. "Number 9 cloud?" That was about as forced a rhyme as I had
since, well, since Bachman-Turner Overdrive had rhymed the word
"mellow" with "fellow" in "Taking Care of Business."
Rogers went on to the Firm and solo stuff, but I never got excited
about his work again. When I think about it, "All Right Now" is probably
still his best vocal performance...perfect attitude, great delivery.!
A *lot* different than, say, "Give me silver, blue, and gold, the color
of the sky, I'm told."
Who told you that, Paul? Certainly not your art or English teachers!
I'd love to hear him sing someone else's [well-written] stuff but
I don't imagine his (reportedly) large ego will ever let that happen.
The debut Bad Company album is sold at the Nice Price and is worth
owning...

| The album "BAD CO." is still, to this day, one of my favs. However, I
saw these guys circa 1977-78 at the Boston Garden and they were
absolutely **TERRIBLE**. I've seen garage bands do Bad Co tunes better
than Bad Co did them. This was probably THE most disappointing concert
I've ever been to ... (but I still love that album!!)
As for the "new" Bad Co.... Love 'em!!!!
(my band does "How About That"... killer tune, great vocals)
