261.0. "A Flock Of Seagulls?" by MR4DEC::SOTO () Wed Jul 01 1992 19:37

Hi. My name is Annie and just added this notesfile to the book. Was
searching and didn't seem to find anything on "A Flock of Seagulls".
I know that they had 2 albums; don't know if they had anymore.

But, was wondering what ever happend to this band...

    Would really like to know.

261.2Where did they run to?MR4DEC::SOTOWed Jul 01 1992 20:178
.1 They ran, they ran so far away! :*)

hahahaha...yes, in fact they did, didn't they!

I heard that Enya (sp) has a similar sound...I don't know...I have not
heard her yet but I gather she is pretty mysterious.

In '83 I saw them open for The Police along with The Fixx. The Fixx
was fine, The Police were hot, and Flock Of Seagulls was (IMHO)
possibly the worst excuse for live talent that I've ever seen. The
entire crowd in the area around us kept calling them Flock Of Seagull
Sh*t by their third song. Although I've never been a fan of theirs,
they sure sound a lot better on vinyl and the airwaves than they did
that day live. What was wrong?: Boring material, boring presentation,
repetitive, unimaginative, simple material, meaningless lyrics,
"fashion over substance", off-key vocals, out of tune guitar, and those
were just the positive attributes. I distinctly remember a lot of
requests from the crowd to either have The Fixx come back out, or to
encourage The Police to come out early.

Maybe just a bad day, I don't know.....

    Cheers,
    Ken

Yes, I was at that show. Sullivan Stadium or was it Shaffer then?
eMpTyV was there for the event and their people seemed a little
perturbed at the crowds reaction to FoS.

    Re: .3

Do you think they broke up after this wonderfully exciting event??
What a big shame to come here and be recognized as a "Flop" of
    Seagulls.

But, they DO sound pretty good on CD's!!

If you in the Boston area, you might be able to see them.

I have seen the twice in the past 3 years (once at the Paradise and
    once at the now-defunct Channel).

They are still touring and last time I saw them I got to talk to Mike
Score (the "leader/vocalist) and he said there was a new album coming out,
but I have yet to see it. (the new material was a return to their early
    sound).

Keep checking the papers, they'll be back...

Do you think they are worth seeing? By what I have heard already...not
too good. What was your impression? Do you have a clue as to the
timeframe they will be in Boston?

I also saw the show in Foxboro. I thought FoS were pretty bogus.
The mix for their band had so much low end in it that I felt I was
going to get sick. I mean like I was going to throwup or something.
As it turned out I was not the only person who felt this way as
the review of the concert in The Globe mentioned the same thing.

Also they had some really dumb computer graphics on the Big screen
as I remember. The Police however sounded fantastic. Nice and
clear and loud but not to loud. I remember seeing FoS sitting back
stage while the Police were on. They looked pretty sheepish like
they knew they didn't do a very good show. I felt kind of embarassed
for them cause I'm sure they didn't expect things to go down like
    that.

Saw them open for the Go-Gos. What a waste! The Go-Gos were sheer poetry
    by comparison.

I dug their third album out of a cut-out bin at Tower Records about 6
months ago. Actually, it was just the one brother (the one with the
seagull hair) and a Fairlight Synthesizer, still going under the Band's
original name. Some really gooey love songs piled high with squeeky
synthesizers and the usual 1991 over-production techniques.

But it made a good blank tape for $.99

Hey, I just couldn't help it!

Helen, who has gotten them a little airplay by this time!
