Musician, Billboard, and Rolling Stone magazines have all given this album
*rave* reviews. I've only had one listen through, but I get the feeling
that I'm going to fully agree with that call. (Then again, I'm the guy who
thought Lindsey's 'Go Insane' album was one of the best albums released
in the 80's!)

I'm gonna give it a few more listenings before giving it a full review.
But for now, it gets a serious thumbs up!!!

alan

P.S. The title of the album comes from a Walt Whitman poem entitled "Out
     Of The Cradle (Endlessly Rocking)"

ABOUT FREAKING TIME!!! I've been waiting just about forever for this.
He's been working on this since even before "Tango In The Night".

They had a review on this album on NPR over the weekind. They say
that the folks at Warner Brothers jokingly called it "Out Of The Studio"
because he was forever remixing and redoing tracks.

Got it (of course), and although I didn't get a chance to REEEEEALLY
listen to it well, from a basic sit-and-listen...

    *sigh* :^)

Of course, I WILL play it again, and give it a better listen (oh, twist

Heard a "Rock Block" over the weekend on some radio station of Lindsey
during and post FM, and it reminded me how much he can sound like Buddy
Holly and Brian Wilson. I guess he could have picked worse role
    models.

Actually, the Buddy Holly thing may have gotten him his FM gig,
considering the Holly fetish they revealed on "Kiln House".

Almost forgot about this topic - thanks for the reminder KC!

I've been meaning to write a review of this for some time now, but just
haven't gotten around to it. In my opinion, 'Out Of The Cradle' is easily
the best of the three solo albums, and possibly even better than Lindsey's
work with Fleetwood Mac! Even most of the FM albums were flawed, with
syrypy songs from Christine McVie and mystical songs from Stevie Nicks.
Not that they were all that bad, but they only seemed to create one
cohesive album, 'Rumours'; the rest seemed a bit fragmented to me.

Lindsey now has the freedom to explore his pop vision, which he does to
glorious results here! While there are a lot of musical references
throughout the album, this is clearly one complete work from beginning
to end.

The instrumental introductions are nice little folky introductions done
with a nylon-string acoustic. It's a little reminicient of style he used
in " " off of 'Rumours'.

> Don't Look Down
This is a nice introduction to the album. Its very typical in that it's a
very pop-sounding song, but had its little quirks about it. For instance,
the chorus seems to borrow a little bit from Laurie Anderson's use of
sampled vocals (also reminds you a bit of the ending of "Big Love", with
the samples voices). Has a nice sorta light Latin feel in the background
percussion.

> Wrong
This is a weird choice for a single. To me, it's one of the weaker songs
on the album, not all that catchy really. But its still a nice song.

> Countdown
This is a *great* pop song! This is the one that should have been the first
single (and I imagine will be the next single, if anyone at Warner has any
brains! [which is doubtful 8^)]). Nice catchy, upbeat, tune. Cool solo
at the end - Lindsey can do more with one note than most guitarist do
with 64!

> All My Sorrows
My favorite song off the album so far, this is a *gorgeous* ballad! It
features some beautiful harmonies that remind of the Beach Boy's 'Pet
Sounds' era. Put this on and drift away.....

> Soul Drifter
Another nice pop song. This could also be the next single, wouldn't suprise
me at all.

> This Is The Time
A rocker! Reminds me a touch of "I'm So Afraid", with Buckingham just WAILING
on the guitar at the end! The beginning has a real nice use of dynamics,
jumping back and forth between hard rock and dreamy pop.

> You Do Or You Don't
This song sound more like Christine McVie than most of her own songs! For
people who like FM and want to hear more of that, this is the song for
them. Sounds like it would fit perfectly on the 'Mirage' album!

> Street Of Dreams
Another ballad, but not quite as intense as "All My Sorrows".

Ooops - gotta go! I'll have to finish this review some other time. But
overall, I would give this album a 9.5 out of 10! Reminds me a lot of
his earlier stuff, but better; some bits of FM thrown in; also reminds
me a bit of Robbie Robertson's solo work and Peter Gabriel's solo stuff,
in the way he mixes a wide variety of musical styles and experimentation
into a great pop formula!

Yeah, that's it! I had a mental block when writing that, and meant to go
back in and fill it in later!

BTW - another musical signpost that I noticed on the LB album - on "This Is
The Time", he steals the drum riff from Zeppelin's "Bonzo's Montreau"!

260.9How Mick Fleetwood Tapped Lindsey and StevieTYFYS::SLATERAs we see ourselves, so do we become.Tue Aug 04 1992 23:0717
    Re: .5

The "ticket" that got Lindsey Buckinham and Stevie Nicks invited into
Fleetwood Mac was their work on their 1973 album entitled, "Buckingham
Nicks" on which they both not only performed music, but appeared on the
cover "topless". Mick F. heard the album and became obscessed with the
idea that he had to get them into Fleetwood Mac. That was right around
the time that Bob Welch, their last lead guitarist before Lindsey,
left the group and started a semi-successful solo career.

By the way, that "BUCKINGHAM NICKS" album is a real keeper. Stevie
Nicks' work on that album was her best ever and the music they made
    together was incredible.

    Further info on BN...

Mick was looking for a studio to record the next FM album, and came
across the one that recorded BN. The (person in charge) put on BN to
show what the studio was capable of, and Mick wanted "that guitarist".
When approached, Lindsey said that it was a "package deal", and Stevie
    came along.

And yes...it IS a keeper... a couple great instrumentals, an ORIGINAL
version of "Crystal" (remade on the "Fleetwood Mac" album), and a few
other wonderful tracks ("Races Are Run", "Crying In The Night" "Don't
    Let Me Down Again" etc.)

BTW, I gave "Out Of The Cradle" another listen-to last night
(interrupted by phone calls, sadly). I noticed a bit of "Go Insane",
"Mirage", "Tango In The Night" and "Rumours", and some real ORIGINAL
stuff, too. I agree that this is the best of his 3 solos.

My favorite cut on the Buckingham Nicks album is "Long Distance

Waddy Watchell, famous studio lead guitarist, jammed with Lindsey on
    several cuts on the album.

Yea, I really like the new album. He does alot of things with the
nylon string guitar. He used some tricks like speeding or lowering
the tape speed which created some neat effects. He used a different
approach on the album which was to record all the guitars mono with no
stereo spreads directly into the board. He used a telecaster through
a fuzzbox directly into the board for the leads. Of course this is
not important if the songs are crap.

If I like this album, would I like his first one? Someone told me
he did a version of the Beach Boys Farmers Daughter on it.

The Boston Globe gave a brief review of Lindsey's concert out in LA (Steve
Morse is out there for the Grammys). It basically *raved* about the show...
here a couple random quotes from the article:

"His show is not only fun, but spectacular"

"Buckingham fronted a searing 10-piece band... seven of the 10 musicians also
sang, providing euphoric, wall-of-sound harmonies evoking a celestial choir"

"His new willingness to share personal insights made this a deeply chathartic,
 transcendent evening"

According the article, besides playing a lot of his recent album, he also
played a bunch of Fleetwood Mac material, including "Big Love" (the acoustic
opener), "The Chain", "Never Going Back Again", and "Go Your Own Way".

Sounds AWESOME! I can't wait until the Boston show next month!!!

If you receive VH-1 via cable, sometime this month Lindsey
Buckingham is going to be featured "Center Stage". This is similar to
MTV's "Unplugged". I think k.d. lang will be the first show this
tuesday, March 2nd. at 8:00pm EST. Also this month, VH-1 will be
replaying Neil Young's "Center Stage" show, quite good.

Lindsey Buckingham was on the PBS show Center Stage this past Monday night,
basically performing the show that I saw at the Paradise (although he played
a lot longer than one hour at the Paradise!). The show was very good,
although I was a little surprised that the harmonies seemed a little rough
in a couple spots (they were perfect at the Paradise).

Songs included acoustic versions of "Big Love" and "Go Insane", and then
full-band versions of a bunch of songs from the new album, "Trouble" from
his first solo album, and Fleetwood Mac songs like "Go Your Own Way",
"Never Going Back Again" and "The Chain".

The highlight of both shows (both the Paradise and the Center Stage) was
his blistering version of "So Afraid".... Wow!

The only disappointmentof the Center Stage show was that they didn't include
"Tusk", which was another tour de force in the live show.
