257.1Unless I die or somethin', I'll see him16BITS::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Thu Jun 25 1992 01:3720
I can't believe I'm actually gonna get to see him this year!!!

I bought tickets for the Friday 8/28 Great Woods concert the day they went
on sale this past winter.

Then several weeks later I saw that he was actually going to be appearing
in NASHUA, of all places, earlier in the week.

Last night I heard he extended his Great Woods stint backwards a day to
have a Wednesday concert as well, and that they had begun selling tickets.
(Anyone know whether or not Thu thru Sat were already sold out?)

What gives? Why is he all of a sudden becoming more public? Or is it just
my perception?

Anyway - I'm looking forward to it.

Now if I can just find a date . . .

257.2JT Disney Special was greatLEDS::BURATIlet's play step on antsWed Jul 01 1992 17:516
    His hour-long special on the Disney channel was superb. A master
    craftsman of a songwriter and singer and accompanying guitarist.
    Excellent backup band, too. They could and should print and package the
    musical segments. I can't believe the songs could be better performed in
    a recording studio. If you like JT and you have an opportunity to see
    this special again, don't miss it.

Having it on tape, I agree with you.

257.4BinocularsKALI::FORSBERGLENaC Product DevelopmentThu Aug 27 1992 17:2112
    Unless you'll be sitting fairly close to the stage (in Section 1,
    2, or 3), bring binoculars. They rent 'em there for $8 a pair.

    Last night's show was excellent, IMHO. I'd never seen JT before
    except on Public Television or on the Disney Channel special. If
    you like what you've seen and heard on TV, you won't be
    disappointed.

    I think that the (semi-) open arena made it even nicer but I
    don't think he could give a bad show anywhere.

257.5JT in NashuaSMURF::LONGOMark Longo, USSGThu Aug 27 1992 18:4462
	I saw JT in Nashua last Sunday and thought he was very good. I would
rate the show an 8 on a scale of 10. He had a nine (9) piece band with him
(including 4 backup singers). The band is composed of essentially the same
personnel heard on the "New Moon Shine" ablum. Not too suprisingly, the overall
sound was quite close to that on "New Moon Shine".

	He did about 6 tunes from New Moon Shine and the rest of the material
spanned his long career. He played material from at least 10 of his albums.
I didn't keep a set list but I've attached the song titles I remember him
playing along with the albums they're from. One of the nice things about
James Taylor is that he has created such a large body of consistently excellent
work over his career. He has a LOT of excellent material to draw from. When
you see him live, you never know what he'll play next. As soon as one song
ended I found myself anxiously anticipating the next.

	Still, I would have liked to see him do more of his recent stuff. I
saw him in '88 on the "Never Die Young" tour and he only did about 4 from that
record and then a lot of the older stuff. He got some of the best response
from the old stuff so I guess he aims to please.

	Also, if you've never seen him in live, he has a very charming and
dry wit. At the Nashua show he was funnier than I've seen him in the past.
Combined with excellent weather, the outdoor setting was pleasant and went
well with his style of presentation.

Was there an opening act for JT at Great Woods?

Jim
257.7Thursday night/ Kate ?ALLVAX::ABBERTONFri Aug 28 1992 14:5914

    There's no opening act. JT comes on around 7:45. (and plays till 10:30
    or so (including 20mins intermission)

    I saw Thursday's show. It was very like the past few replies. During
    the encore numbers, a woman (Kate?) came on and did the Shoop Shoop
    Song. Does anybody know who she is?

    Great show (I wish Livingston Taylor had been there as well, he usually
    sings a few with JT at these (NE) area concerts. I heard that he was
    there on Wednesday night. LT must have been otherwise occupied last
    night) and a nice crowd.

257.8Liv in NashuaSMURF::LONGOMark Longo, USSGFri Aug 28 1992 15:448
	Liv Taylor did "City Lights" w/ JT during the encore in Nashua. This is
a Liv tune from his album "Life Is Good". The album version features JT. I
have seen them do this tune in encores at JT shows before. Not surprisingly,
this was the band's loosest tune, but it was nice to see Liv and JT on stage
together both playing acoustic guitars and sharing a mic.

257.9Concern for the environmentKALI::FORSBERGLENaC Product DevelopmentFri Aug 28 1992 17:0513
    I believe that last Sunday's Globe article on JT said that he draws
    more listeners to Great Woods than any other performer. Did I read
    that correctly?

    Even being a fan, I find this pretty amazing. I got to see him only
    because the Wednesday show was added to the schedule. I wonder how
    many more fans there are in the area who were disappointed.

    BTW, JT is now affiliated with the Natural Resources Defense Council
    (NRDC). During Wednesday's intermission, they were passing out
    "dangerous environmental propaganda" as he put it.

That is JT's sister. A true family affair!

257.11Those of you going tonight will not be disappointed16BITS::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Sat Aug 29 1992 06:1618
Just got back from the Friday concert. Best entertainment I've ever attended
in my life. It was worth waiting for ten times over.

Liv dropped by to do a duet with James on the second of 3 or 4 curtain calls
(but the song was new to me). JT wound up with a solo of Sweet Baby James,
which was a perfect finish as far as I was concerned (I woulda been ripped
if he hadn't sung it at all, but he probably knew he couldn't play the
Boston area without it :^).

The crew working the lights for this concert were absolute artists in my
opinion. I was duly impressed.

For the miserable week this has been, I couldn't think of a better way to
end it.

-Jack

PS. Sam - he ended the first set with "Fire and Rain". :^)

    My wife and I went to see JT at the Orpheum on Monday night. Great
    show, but I'm prejudiced. He was real casual, pausing between songs
    and talking a bit with the audience. It was more like watching him jam
    than a concert.

I've heard that James did an album with Ricky Skaggs. Is that true? If so,
how is it?

I don't think they did a whole album (although I could be wrong), but
they *did* record a song (and make a video) together. It was a religious
Christmas song whose name escapes me.

re: .-1, Erik

I'm hoping against hope that he will have a late announcement, but in checking
with Great Woods in Mansfield a few weeks ago, there's nothing currently
scheduled, and they seem to be pretty well booked. I don't know of anyplace
else in the East-Central New England area big enough to attract him for
a several night stand, which I expect he requires to come into the area.
(E.G. I don't think he would have done Nashua last year if he hadn't been
able to piggy-back it with Great Woods.)
