234.0. "Roy Orbison, A Legend in Time" by CUPMK::FRASCINELLA (In the beginning was the Word...) Wed May 27 1992 14:24

I'd like to start this topic in continuing memory of the Big O.

Has anyone heard of any recent releases from Roy Orbison? After he
died in 1988, I remember his widow saying in an interview that there
were lots of recordings that he had never released.

There was a Travelling Wilburys Vol. 3. Can anyone comment on it? I'm
only interested in any Orbison cuts it might contain.

    Yours,

    Michael F.

I once had the pleasure of meeting Roy Orbison and having dinner with
him (I knew his manager). He was such a nice man, such a gentleman
and very soft spoken which is surprising since he has such a powerful
singing voice. I had a chance to see him in concert twice, free
tickets and front row seats. I have nice souvenirs too, an
autographed album, backstage passes and of course pictures.

I am also interested if anyone has heard of any new releases.

never met him, never saw/heard him live, but i've been a fan since 1961
or so. He has always been described as a very pleasant gentlman, but
it's that voice that gets to me.

The voice IS spectacular live too! I saw him the year before he died and
was impressed that his recordings were no gimmick. He could sing! The age
spread of his audience was a tribute to his ability.

234.4Big O Band keeps the music aliveCUPMK::FRASCINELLAIn the beginning was the Word...Tue Jun 02 1992 03:3520
There was a tribute to Roy Orbison recently in Manchester, NH. It seems
there is some local talent that does impersonations. They call
themselves the Big O band. The main event was Roy Small, who looked
remarkably like Orbison, complete with black outfit, haircut, and
sunglasses. He came on stage once and went through many
of the songs from the early 60s. He came back later and sang tunes
from the Wilburys album and from Mystery Girl.

Another singer was Darlene Buchanon who sang Patsy Cline songs (a
marvelous female vocalist who died too young). Both were terrific. My
only regret was that the band tended to drown out the singers at times.
Why do bands seem to equate volume with quality?

The audience was interesting to note. There were people in their 20s
all the way into their 60s. It was really remarkable what a broad age
appeal Roy Orbison continues to have.

    Yours,

Still recall/regrettably missing his show at the Channel a few days
	prior...

I wonder where the Japanese mag. Big O gets their name from.
