227.0. "A "Hit" the second time around" by FORTSC::CHABAN (Make *PRODUCTS* not consortia!!) Mon May 18 1992 23:51

As a Todd Rundgren fan, I often have to explain what he is know for. Tunes
like "Hello, It's Me" and "I Saw The Light" are familiar to most folks, but
most seem to remember "Love Is The Answer" when I play it for them. I then
have to explain that Todd & Utopia did not do the "hit" (England Dan &
    John Ford Coley) version.

Anyone else think of another case of a "hit" being made on the cover version?

227.1What did I just say???REFINE::BARKERI like to do drawrings.Tue May 19 1992 13:036
Does the author of the song have to have recorded the song first? Or,
can person 'A' have written it, not recorded it, and then artist 'B'
recorded it, and artist 'C' made the hit? Am I making this to
    complicated??

Like, for instance, Laura Branigan had a hit with "How Am I Supposed To
Live Without You", but Michael Bolton (who wrote it in the first place)
had a MONSTER hit with the song years AFTER.

"Wind Beneath My Wings" was done by at LEAST 3 people before Bette
Midler had a hit with it (Melissa Manchester, Sheena Easton, Willie
    Nelson).

Santana's hit, "Black Magic Woman" was originally a Fleetwood Mac song.

    How's that for starters?

I think "Crazy", Patsy Cline/Willie Nelson falls into this catagory.

I believe he wrote it and gave it away, as he did with a large number
of songs, he then put out an inferior version of it and I think that
    was a hit aswell.

What about Marvin Gaye's Wherever I lay my hat.

This song put Paul Young into the big league with a UK no1.

Judy Collins had the hit with Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now".

Bette Midler had the hit with "From A Distance", which had at least
three other versions prior to hers.

Prelude had a hit single with Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush".

The Byrds had hits with Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Pete Seeger's
    "Turn Turn Turn".

Hendrix had a hit with Dylan's "ALL Along the Watchtower".

Joe Cocker had hits with Dave Mason's "Feeling Alright" and Billy
    Preston's "You Are So Beautiful".

    Etc. etc. etc.

Elvis did "Always on my mind" Then Willie did it as well...or is
    that reversed?

There's a bunch of tunes by the Beatles that other artist have had hits
    with.

Earth,Wind and Fire...Got to get you into my Life, is just one.

I lost $5.00 on this one:
Blinded by the Light - popularized by Manfred Mann, written by Bruce
    (gag) Springsteen.

And one of my favorites and for the life of me I can't remember the
    title:
originally done by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, redone (just as
good, maybe better, IMO) by Simply Red.

"If You Don't Know Me By Now".

I agree, the Simply Red version was quite nice, although it was almost an
exact duplicate of the original....

This maybe premature but I think Ann and Nancy Wilson (new band; Lust or
Love Mongers) do an excellent version of Led Zeppelin's Battle Of Evermore

I tuned in at the begining of the tune and I knew it wasn't LZ but I
also knew it sounded great - I was pleasantly surprised to hear who was
    performing it.

Well, to each her own. To me, it sounds too harsh. I'm more inclined
to think it was badly mixed than badly sung, but that's just my
opinion. I listen whenever it comes on the radio since I love the song
and no one ever plays the Led Zep version any more, but there are
    places when I wince.

You may also be expecting too much from a re-release - I tend to do it
too. I *know* how the original (or hit version) sounds and when I hear
a cover version there are times I cringe with - "Ohh I use to like that
part of the song" But I think all in all it sounds great - and yup,
to each their own and I found it refreshing to hear a Led Zep tune on
the radio that wasn't Stairway To Heaven.
