Subject: Guns N' Roses cancels when Axl threatened with arrest
Date: 11 Apr 92 04:52:30 GMT

CHICAGO (UPI) -- The Los Angeles rock group Guns N' Roses abruptly
canceled a concert Friday night and left town just ahead of the sheriff
when it was learned lead singer Axl Rose would be arrested in connection
with a riot in St. Louis last July, a spokesman said.
Shortly before showtime at the 18,000-seat Rosemont Horizon Arena,
the promoter warned Guns N' Roses that officers from the Cook County
Sheriffs Department were going to arrest Rose and extradite him to St.
Louis on a $100,000 bench warrant on four misdemeanor charges stemming
from a riot last July at the Riverport Performing Arts Center.
Rather than go to jail, Rose left the sheriff's jurisdiction.
``It's unusual, to say the least, for anyone to be extradited over
misdemeanor charges,'' said a spokesman for GNR Management. ``It smacks
of celebrity persecution. We understood they planned to arrest Axl
imminently, thus preventing the show anyway. We apologize to the fans
for this and hope they will understand when they hear what we were up
against.''
The announcement was made at 7 p.m. Chicago time, just a half-hour
before the doors were to open. The GNR spokesman said fans dispersed
peacefully, and tickets will be refunded on Monday.
According to Geffen Records in Los Angeles, shows scheduled Monday
and Tuesday at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Mich., are
also canceled.
On July 2, rioting erupted in St. Louis after Rose leaped into the
audience and allegedly attacked a fan who was attempting to take a
photograph of the flamboyant rocker. The band walked off the stage, and
rioting fans trashed the band's equipment, forcing the cancelation of
the next two stops on the tour.
Six days later, the band was in Dallas for its first show since the
riot when the fan filed charges against Rose in St. Louis.
The next night, Rose interrupted a Dallas concert after a fan threw
an empty whiskey bottle on the stage and lectured the crowd about
responsibility and safety.
One day later, July 10, promoters of the St. Louis show filed suit
against the band, claiming its actions led to the riot, in which 75
people were injured. The band blamed poor security at the arena.
On July 30, Rose threw a tantrum and threatened to cancel a concert
at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., after a police officer issued a
ticket to the driver of the group's limousine. Police said the ticket
was taken back to prevent a riot.
The band's spokesman did not say where Rose and the other band
members went.

I initially thought that Axl that was responsible for the mess/riot...

I believe that security was responsible for the problem in St Louis. Axl may
have not shown the best judgement but the riot started due to lax security and
then the crowd trashed their equipment, so they had no choice but to leave.

There was an article on this in Rolling Stone last summer. It isn't a given
that Axl was at fault even though it may appear to be that way.

199.7GnR not hurting due to St. Louis' shortcomingsCAVLRY::BUCKNo coasters in hell!Fri Apr 24 1992 19:1411
The incident and occurances at St. Louis were in violation of GnR's
performance contract. That noted, tyhe band can't be cited for
"walking off stage", which sparked the riot. Also, if and when the
riot started, how come security couldn't keep crowd control??

FWIW, the buzz in the concert promotions biz is that GnR is still rocks
hottest ticket (sorry, they gross far more financially than even U2!
[all doubters, see the stats published weekly in Amusement Businezz
magazine!!]), and every house in the country is backing GnR on this
issue, citing "we'd book them in a second". Everyone, except St. Louis
    (of course).
199.8CAVLRY::BUCKNo coasters in hell!Fri Apr 24 1992 19:1712
and as a PS "fwiw" ... a friend of mine works concert security for all
the major rock shows in St. Louis, and she reports that far before the
GnR show in question, there have been many incidents at rocks shows in
St. Louis. In fact, before the riot, the city was seriously
considering a ban on the booking of these shows, as there are always a
few serious incidents which occur at each show. Warrant and Skid Row
concerts were cited by this security guards as "working nightmares".

Will be interesting to see what the future holds for rock shows in St.
    Louis, MO.

    Hi Buck,

Thanks for reminding me. I was trying to think of the name of that band
that I loathe so much. Warrent. Yeck!

But regarding GnR, is walking off the stage what the authorities are
considering started the ruckus? Or did Axl do something more
provocative. Wasn't there something about somebody taking a picture?

I think there were disruptive people in the front that security refused to
quiet down/remove. Axl asked several times for security to do something about
them and security did nothing. I believe that the people were causing a lot of
trouble and Axl didn't feel comfortable with them there.

Not hard to understand after seeing some of the people I've sat next to.

I think one reason Axl "can't sing" is that the band does a real live show
and doesn't use backing tapes. Sometimes his voice gets rough, but it is a
real performance. I still prefer to hear sour/wrong notes than a backing
tape.

Sorry, unfortunately I heard this tune again. To me it sounds like a bad
joke. How can anyone stand that guy's sing...er...vocal work. The rest
of the band sounds like your average dime-a-dozen garage band after they
smoked too much dope. It makes me think that I must be gettin' old. But
then I heard a hard-driving tune by The Black Crows right afterwards
that sounded real good to me.

How GnR can be so popular is truly beyond me. I mean the singing is bad,
the backup is mediocre, the lyrics are pathetic and the music -- at best
-- unimaginative. When I was 16 I had a band that sounded about like
    what I've heard from GnR.

To borrow a popular british term, these guys are posers, IMHO.

I dont consider myself a G'n'R fan, I have seen them twice, once they
were awful and once they were superb. Axl cant sing, but neither can
Dylan/Jagger/Springsteen, they all have their own style and their own
unique live performance which makes their shows. To say the backing
musicians are mediocre is, IMHO, wrong. Slash is amazing on the guitar,
and many artists have had him playing on their albums...Dylan for one.

The energy and commitment they put into their performance is almost
Unique at this time...very few artists put on a show which is not only
energetic but also fun. And have you actually listened to the lyrics on
'Appetite..' they are better than most artists could ever dream of
    writting.

I hate the G'n'R attitude to life and they are all dickheads, but their
live show and their music is to the 80/90s what the stones were to the
    60s

Boy this is an awful thought and I couldn't disagree more. GnR are a
bunch of deadbeats that never had an original musical thought in their
entire life. These guys really grate on me -- bad. The fact that some of
them are such #$!!&*%holes just makes it worse. I generally don't dump

prove me wrong...they always do!) :^)

I hate 'em. They are the ONLY group that I will TURN OFF if they come

would choose Madonna (and y'all KNOW how I feel about HER!).

And yes...I HAVE given them a fair shake...For the longest time I would
sit and listen to a GnR song when it came out, hoping that maybe the
first one was a bad fluke. I have not liked ONE song. Not even

I don't try to defend 'em. For some reason I like them and take a lot of flak
when I try to explain why.

The first time I saw them was at Great Woods before Aerosmith. They were okay
to good, but their show started to drag after 8-9 songs. Axl had one speech
trying to defend "Mr Brownstone" and how it was more anti-drug than anything.

Live they can be a bit raw, especially Axl, but I prefer raw to backing tapes.

Seeing them this winter in Worcester, I was amazed at the number of slow tempo
songs they did. Sort of remind me of Led Zep, how they started out with a very
hard first album, then began to explore other rhythms and acoustic melodies.

Of course no one likes LZ either...

Well, I haven't had the privilege of seeing G'n'R live, but, I do have
    a couple of their albums. So, for what it's worth, here's my opinion;
Guns and Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" was the first I purchased.
The song, "Welcome To the Jungle", turned my crank the first time I
heard it. It is a visceral, powerful piece of work.

I like several songs on this album. So, naturLLY, when "Use Your
Illusion" albums came out, I bought them, expecting good things. To
date, after several listenings, I've gotta confess I'm disappointed
with the quality of the songs offered. "November Rain" and a couple
others are pretty good, but the projects seem a bit overambitious.

Also, I'm inclined to believe that Axl and Slash may have been playing
the types of gaves with Izzy Stradlin that Keith and Mick played with
Brian Jones, and Izzy told them to take a hike. G'n'R will suffer
because of Stradlin's departure, I'm sure.

So, overall, I think there's a lot of potential there, but the promise
    has not yet been delivered.

    Your mileage may vary, etc.

i do think that being awakened at 6 a.m. is a pain, but
i don't think it's something to sue over.

..sorry if that sounded like a frontal attack on you willie....my
buttons got pushed from the first note talking about 'axl whining
again' and all that garbage...the guy may do some things that look
flaky to others and maybe some of them are but i think we all agree
that no one needs bottle s thrown at them on stage.....as for the bcn
thing he took a crack at bcn by saying something like the sambuca
throwing jerk must be a bcn listener..... bcn had been taking potshots
at them ALL day long though, at this point.....as well as waking them
up and in general being boorish pains..../k

I think there's a great leap from saying "must be a bcn listener"
and "blaming BCN for the bottle".

I don't like Axl either but it sounds to me like you're just not
    cutting him any breaks.

There is no doubt that Axl has done his share of whining. From the
GNR/Metallica tour loosing money to the sound engineer at every gig.
But for once he has a substantial reason. First of all, had I been hit
on the head with a bottle, I would have walked off that stage, my last
words being "Find who through the bottle and I'll play". That audience
would have split like the Red Sea, leaving the bottle-thrower all by
his lonesome. But he was VERY COOL about it. I have new respect for Axl
that I didn't have before. Any other performer would have left, and
speaking of Bob Dylan... he probably would have died on impact. There's
a big difference from whining about a soung engineer and whining about
Assault And Battery with a Deadly Weapon. Had the bottle hit Axl in
a myriad of other places, it could have been life threatning.

As for BCN. If they took something I said out of context and played it
WITHOUT my permission, to make their station seem 'funny' or what not,
you can bet yer bum I'd be talkin' to my laywer. Expecially something
    such as an obscenity.

I dunno about that. I've been to an awful lot of shows in my life, and this
is hardly the first time I've seen something get thrown onstage. Bands will
sometimes ignore it, and sometimes they'll say something, but I've never
seen anyone walk off before.

One time that Journey was playing, Neil Schon got hit in the head with a
bottle. He didn't even stop playing - just kept the song going, all the
while you could see blood dripping down the side of his face and head,
turning his shirt red.... *that* to me is professionalism - you don't let
one jerk in the crowd spoil it for 15,000 others.

Maybe not but there are some things a person shouldn't have to take. If the
jerk is out of order and injuring someone, he should be thrown out. I for one
wouldn't stand on the stage until my security was assured.

I once was marching in a band at a local festival. I was playing piccolo. I
went to take a deep breath (need a lot of air to play the piccolo, especially
when marching) just when someone threw an enormous handfull of confetti right in
my mouth. Almost asphixiated me. Why do you think sousaphone players have
nets over the bell of their horns? Not just to make them pretty!

I don't believe musicians who are there to entertain us deserve this kind of
abuse. I'm not a great fan of Axl Rose but his gyrations certainly don't
deserve a bottle on the head.

I was at a Led Zeppelin concert (Madison Square Garden around 1976)
where Jimmy Page got hit by an exploding firecracker!!!!

It was towards the end of the show - I think they played two more
songs and then got off - no encore. Supposedly, it required about
a dozen stitches to close one of the wounds. I was worried both
for his ability to play guitar and whether or not the next show
(which I also had tickets for) would be cancelled.

They did catch the guy and charge him with assault.

I remember reading that. It was either a cherry bomb or an M80 though. A
firecracker wouldn't have done that much damage.

Like the one that goes off in the middle of Dazed and Confused on
their live album...

Throwing stuff on stage isn't anything new, of course not, but
throwing bottles at the singer? Even if it wasn't intentional, a bottle
    of sambuca?

That's not professionalism, that's heart. If I was giving a
presentation to my supervisors and one of them through their coffee mug
at my head, you bet I'd walk outta there.

You're right one jerk shouldn't spoil it, and that's why Axl came back.
