192.0. "Van (The Man) Morrison" by ONEDGE::FARRELL (The prodigal son returns) Mon Apr 06 1992 14:47

This topic is for Van Morrison stuff.

I'll start by asking whether anyone has a spare pair of tix
for the April show in the Orpheum in Boston. I've already
got a pair, but I'm looking for another pair for some
friends.

Hi Jamie,

Yes it does exist and was (I think) one of his first ones after
he left Them.

It was probably from the late 60's / early 70's. I haven't
seen it on CD anywhere, but I wouldn't be surprised if you can
find it at one of the larger stores.

Don't forget his style has changed a lot over the years, so you
could be surprised by that one.

> Yes it does exist and was (I think) one of his first ones after

Yeah, "T.B. Sheets" was a repackaging of 60s Bang material (post-Them,
pre-Astral Weeks) -- all of it now repackaged yet again, in more
complete form, as the CD "The Bang Masters". The LP packaging you're
referring to had the pretty intense cut "T.B. Sheets", "Brown-Eyed
Girl", and early versions of a couple of "Astral Weeks" cuts (including
a version of "Beside You" that's my favorite). All of these should be
on the "Bang Masters" CD. - Jay

I just charged tickets to the show at the Orpheum. (one of those
scalper ads from the Phoenix) I got seats way back in the balcony, but
at least I'll be there. I love his voice and his music, and I've only
seen him twice before. Once at Great Woods a couple of years ago, and
once in Edinburgh, Scotland, last summer. The Edinburgh show was the
    better of the two.

I love his last 3 albums - Hymns to the Silence, Enlightenment and
Avalon Sunset, and I'll be happy hearing that stuff, but, what I would
really like is to hear Wavelength, or Into The Mystic, or Bright Side
of the Road, or Brown Eyed Girl. I've read that he hasn't sung Brown
Eyed Girl, at a concert, in years, though. I guess he gets sick of
being known for a song he released about 25 yrs. ago, when he's put out
so many good things since, and I can't blame him.

Anyway, I love his music, and I'm looking forward to seeing him again.
When I listen to his beautiful voice, and music, I forget that he's a
short, fat, bald, little man, known for having a grumpy personality!

(but I guess all rock stars can't be gorgeous like Bono and Bruce!) :-)

Lorna,

Don't forget there are two excellent live albums of his.
One (fairly old) double live with some GREAT versions of
songs - It's Too Late To Stop It Now - and another more
recent one recorded in Belfast - I can't remember it's
name.

I'd recommend either. Trouble is that in concert it
can be a gamble. I saw him YEARS ago in Cork, and he
was good. A few nights later in Dublin he sang for
20 minutes and left which pissed off a lot a people !!

The Best of Van Morrison is an excellent CD.

It covers early "Them" tracks right up to present day.

The production on "Have I told you lately" is superb, but
my fav Van track is :
                          " Sweet Thing "

The Waterboys do a great cover version of it ( anyone heard it ? )

I saw Van twice back around '70. The shows were both so-so. BUT...
there is ONE HELLUVA performance of "Caravan" with him backed up be The
Band on The Last Waltz album. If you like that vintage Van Morrison
stuff you owe it to yourself to give this track a good loud listen.

Equally good is his performance on the preceding track which is a duet
with Richard Manual sharing the vocals on a cover of "Tura-Lura Lural
    (That's an Irish Lulluby)".

These two tracks are a couple of gems on this album.

    See COMET::RECORDS 443.24 for an in-order listing of tracks.  Here's a
chronological list. It's really a collection of singles-type cuts,
which prevents it from really representing his "Best", but there was
clearly a demand for a repository of singles-type nuggets like this.

FWIW, a "Best of Volume 2" CD was supposed to materialize in February, but
apparently didn't. Much as I hate to encourage this sort of thing, I am
morbidly curious as to what it would contain. A "best of" Van Morrison
seemingly should contain something other than perky singles-type cuts.

Probably the fact "Best of" the first is still on the Billboard charts
  held up Vol.2... - Jay

Got a look at "Best of Van Morrison Vol.2" in the store.

The cuts again were picked by Mr. Man (same as Vol.1); the twist this time
is, it draws only from material Polygram doesn't have to license -- the
Morrison Polygram albums, and Them material. Polygram, seeing the
enduring chart success of Vol.1, wants to milk this one for all it's
  worth.

It goes something like shown below, 15 cuts (72 or so minutes) -- listed
by original album, not in playing order. - Jay

From "Them": Don't Look Back (JL Hooker tune)

Well, I agree. On the other hand, you & I (and any other arbitrary Van

If you add in Morrison's Vol.1 selections from the same albums, it

Van Morrison sang in a fairly well-known band. Some of the

Them were really a great band, hideously underrated in my opinion.
I think that almost everything Van's done has been admirable from
a critical point of view, but as far as my own personal preference is
concerned, there's no beating the music he recorded with Them.

If my memory serves me right, Them only recorded two studio albums WITH
Van Morrison (plus some psychadaelic influenced recordings after
Morrison had left to start his solo career), but there's a whole host
of excellent compilations of the band's music. In any case, the two
original albums (Them and Them Again) are easily available on CD. The
relatively recent revival (try saying that quickly!) of interest in
their music was sparked off by the mid-eighties wave of beat/r&B bands
like the Chesterfield Kings and the Creeps.

The highpoints of Them's all-too-short career (IMO) include covers of
Baby Please Don't Go (Big Joe Williams), Just A Little Bit (Roscoe
Gordon), It's All Over Now Baby Blue (Bob Dylan) and I Put A Spell On
You (Screaming Jay Hawkins), plus some great originals such as Here
Comes The Night, I Just Want To Give You Everything and Mystic Eyes.
But nearly all their output is worth having. In addition to Morrison
himself, producer Bert Berns was responsible for writing many of their
    songs.

Oh, in case I hadn't mentioned it, their music was hard white R&B
(similar to the early Stones, Animals and Yardbirds) with a touch of
    jazz and folk.

I picked up the new album (geez, I forgot the title already, "Back From
The Exile"?) last week and it's another sharp turn from Van. This time
out he's deep into the blues!

There are some covers of blues and jazz standards like "Good Morning
Little Schoolgirl", "Lonely Avenue", and "Moody's Mood" as well as two
duets with John Lee Hooker ("Gloria" and "Wasted Years") plus a
Hooker-esque blues called "Big Time Operators" where Van rails against
the NYC music biz and plays lead guitar, even! He whips out some nice
harmonica and alto sax work as well. The disk clocks in at over 77
minutes so there's plenty of room for Van to stretch out, and sure
enough, he gets into that out-of-body experience scat work in a few
    places.

The band includes at various times Georgie Fame, Candy Dulfer (!!),
Kate St. John of Dream Academy (!!!) and Robert Cray's rhythm section.
In fact the horn section of Dulfer and St. John is a lot grittier than
I would have expected based on their pedigrees.

re .36, "Too Long In Exile."

My favorite song is "Ball and Chain." I, also, like "When We Get The
Healin Done," "Too Long In Exile," "Wasted Years" and "I Can Take Care
of You." "Gloria" and "Good Morning Little School Girl" are okay. I
always skip over the one where he rails against the music business, and
there's 3, I think, on Side 2 (I have the cassette), that are after
"Wasted Years" and before "I Can Take Care of You" that I always skip
    over.

I think this album is a real mixed bag. There are 5 that I love, 3 or
4 that I don't like, and the rest are just ok.

I hope Van tours this year. It's been almost a year since I've seen
him in concert and I'm going into withdrawal. Has anybody heard
anything about whether he'll be touring the US soon?

(Hey, maybe he can do Woodstock II. He used to live there.) :-)

Can any Van fans point me in the direction of an album that contains
the song "The Eternal Kansas City". I have a single version backed
with "Joyous Sound" from late '70's (maybe early eighties) but can't
see it on any of the CD's in the bigger record shops.

The aptly titled "A Period of Transition". It's available on CD. I'm
fond of 3 or 4 songs on that album, though other fans I know are unmoved.
