187.0. "Melissa Etheridge" by PIPE::GOOD (Michael Good) Thu Mar 26 1992 16:22

Melissa Etheridge has a new album out called "Never Enough". True to
her promises of a couple years ago, it has a somewhat different feel to
it. There's her beautiful piano playing on "The Letting Go", some new
lyrical themes in songs like "2001" in particular, and a greater
variety of singing style. She used to go over-the-top vocally in each
number, and now she can sing intensely without going vocally raw -
"Dance Without Sleeping" is a particularly good example.

The album threw me a bit on first listening since it's a bit more
mellow than her first two. There are still great rockers like "Ain't
It Heavy", but there's a greater percentage of ballads and softer
songs. Since first listening though it's really been growing on me.

Of the first two albums, her debut "Melissa Etheridge" is my favorite.
"Brave and Crazy" is a good album but doesn't hit quite the high points
    of the debut.

I saw her in concert at Great Woods a couple years ago and it was one
of the best rock concerts I've seen - very dynamic, energetic, and
    musical.

Any other fans? It's been almost 3 years since her last album so folks
    might have forgotten about her...

Agreed - the debut album had some great stuff on it.
"Chrome-plated Heart" and "Bring Me Some Water" (<- approximate names)
were my favorites. I'll have to check out the new album.
	Thanks for the review.

RE: 187.2 You saw her at Maxwell's? Wow - what a great place, especially
to see Melissa. I used to love that place when I lived in that area. Saw
Game Theory, the Feelies (of course), Yo La Tengo (ditto), and a few others.

Anyway, I'll say this, Melissa looks HOT on the cover of her new album. I think
it's the cover - the ads show her with her shirt off, back to the camera,
guitar slung around her. I think it's a sexy picture.

Oh, the music. Hmm, haven't heard anything new. I really like her debut. I
have the tape, but the songs aren't written. That one about "does she rock
you, tantalize and shock you..." is a great tune.

Yup, saw Melissa there. Never caught the Feelies, although I'd die if
I had the chance. I also saw The Bongos there a few years back.

For those who've never been there or heard about it, it's a back room
of a restaurant/fern bar with no chairs, some steps off to the side and
    a stage that can't be more than 20 x 20.

The room holds 200 people max and many name acts show up to do a late
set. My buddy from Hoboken lives nearby and has seen Lucinda Williams,
Marshall Crenshaw, The Feelies (numerous times), John Hyatt, Roseanne
Cash and Lyle Lovett doing an acoustic set.

 >> you, tantalize and shock you..." is a great tune.

Yes, it is. That's "Like the Way I Do", I believe. The
musicians complement her perfectly on that album, especially
on the tunes that are a little more on the hard-driving side.

187.6Orpheum show (5/21/92)IAMA::MEANYAttitude is Everything.......Fri May 22 1992 13:2719

Saw Melissa last night at the Orpheum, and like her Great Woods show
of 2 years ago it was tremendous!!! Good mix of new and old tunes
with some really rockin' jams with the band. Kevin and Fritz are still
with her, and sound as good as ever. Bernie Larsen is gone however and
she now has two people to play guitar and keyboards.

She also had re-worked a couple of the older tunes. Her new version
of "Brave and Crazy" particularly stood out. I usually don't like when
artists change their classic songs after they've been released, but
	these were quite good.

She played a little over a 2 hour set and she rocked the house.
Sounds like she will be back in the summer to do an outdoor show
again at Great Woods. We can only hope....

Also, I'm looking for anyone who has any live recordings of Melissa.
Her live performances are just filled with so much power and feeling
that I'd love to get hold of ANY of these.

Send me email if you can help.

187.8Great show in BostonPIPE::GOODMichael GoodTue May 26 1992 20:2011
Yes, Melissa's show at the Orpheum was fantastic! While some songs are
rearranged, most are in their original album arrangements, or stretched
out a little bit. But they never sound like rote renditions of album
tracks: they always sound like they are being sung new for this show.
That's the way it should be, but rarely have I seen just consistently
powerful interpretations at a rock concert (since her last local show
at Great Woods, anyway). And the band is very tight! She's one of the
best rockers on the road today. Played just about everything from the
"Never Enough" album, closing with her beautiful piano ballad, "The
Letting Go." And it was fun to hear her reminisce about her college
days in Boston, playing Barry Manilow tunes at Ken's on Boylston St...

I'm a little late in becoming aware of this artist but my interest
is growing quite rapidly! I just got her debut CD and I'm an instant
fan! Her other ones are on my "CD's to get list". She has two others
or is three by now? I know she just came out with a new one.

The notes in here speak only of her music (as well they should) but
can anybody fill in some background on HER. I don't get any of those
music magazines and things like that so I'm pretty much in the dark
about her. Her disc cover pictures is the only way I've even seen what
she looks like. How about some stats on her, please? Like: How old is
she? Was she ever in any bands? Is she married to anyone famous?
You know, the usual "What expiring minds want to know!" stuff....

    	Thanx,

I don't really follow this sort of thing. There was something on the 6
o'clock news (seems like a month ago, now) about some sort of national
coming-out-of-the-closet day. Amanda Bearse (sp?) from "Married with
Children" was the lead personality featured in the story, with Melissa
being mentioned in the "also-coming-out-today" category.

Doesn't change how I feel about her one bit - she still light years
    cuter than Neil Young!!! *8')

I remember hearing something about that on the news also. And, like
you, I don't really keep up with that sort of thing either. But I
didn't hear M.E.'s name connected to it. (Shows how close I payed
attention to it.) It also doesn't affect my opinion. If I like
somebodies music then that's it. If they happen to be the person
everyone saw through the two-way mirror doing things with a chicken the
night before then so what! That isn't going to change my opinion of
    their music!

I guess that would depend on what your idea of an erotic weekend
is. She might be into pizza and beer while watching the tractor
    pulling contests on ESPN! 8^)

Melissa was on the KTLA morning show this morning (channel 5 in L.A.).
She played a nice Ovation 12 string and sang a couple of tunes off of
her new release "Yes I Am". Very compelling performance -- I may have
    to pick this one up!

It's not Melissa. Sorry to inform you. I don't know the woman's name
but she is Meatloaf's backup singer. I can check it at home tonight
and let you know. As much as I like Melissa, I think this woman has a
    better voice.

The song is "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" and it
is on Meatloaf's latest CD BAT OUT OF HELL II: BACK INTO HELL.
