176.0. "The Concert for Life" by OLTRIX::ZAPPIA (punk rock polly) Thu Mar 19 1992 19:48

The line-up for the Concert of Life, the Freddie Mercury / Queen
tribute, etc. show at Wembley on April 20th will probably go through
some changes via rumors and actual reports but here's how it stands:

Guns N' Roses, Elton John, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, George Michael,
Roger Daltrey, Def Leppard, Extreme, Metallica, Robert plant, Seal
Spinal Tap, U2, Paul young, Monserrat Caballe.

w/ supposedly a duet being done by Daltrey and Plant.

    Hi, some news.

Def Leopard will be there too, and present their new album called
"Adrenalize". Joe elliot will perform with ex-queen also(in
    negotiation)

"Let's get rocked" is to be Def's latest release soon.
Now as a"jazz/dance" fanatic....I seem to like these guys of Def L.
These guys are the kind I like to hang around with in a pub and talk
    about music[and wimin'] ;)

The german Pay-TV station "Premiere" will broadcast live the whole
concert, but not coded, so everybody with cable or satellite can watch
    free of charge.

I don't think MTV is broadcasting it. I heard that here in the States
the Fox network has the rights. We'll see.\

_I_ heard that both MTV AND FOX were broadcasting it...MTV in its
entirety; FOX only 2 hours of it (or so).

From what I saw and heard, I didn't think it was that great. George
Michael did a super job. I thought Axl hammed it up by butting into
everything and the grand finale with Liza Minnelli??

It will be interesting to see the whole version this Saturday.

176.8_I_ thought it was GOODSELL1::FAHELAmalthea Celebras/Silver UnicornFri Apr 24 1992 13:3915
I loved it, but agree that someone should have put a leash on Axl.
    (LOVED his skirt!) ;^)

I thought that Bowie's performance with Annie Lennox was very
emotional...and needed the follow-up that, well, followed.

What _I_ couldn't get over was the audience! It seemed like everyone
truly became one. In songs with the more distinctive rhythms ("Radio
GaGa", "We Will Rock You")...well, I can't even describe it - it was
    PHENOMINAL!

This is the ONLY time I regret not having MTV. I would love to see the
    full concert.

I thought it was pretty good overall. There were some low points, but I thought
the enthusiasm shown by performers as well as the crowd was really uplifting.

I high point for me was seeing Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson do All the Young Dudes.

Axl and Elton seemed a bit tense, but I liked their version of Bohemian Rhapsody

i thought it was prety good also. but axel's voice....

anyway, i thought fox did a real good job. cindy crawford was good,
too. she didnt' try to interview thea acts or interupt the music. she
    certainly is no martha quinn!

lets hope the mtv show tomorrow is just as good film wise.

176.11A Freddie fan's concert reviewSMURF::MALERThere can be only oneFri May 01 1992 20:1423
I thought George Michael did the best tribute, hands down. He sang
Somebody to Love like a true fan -- he did a little interpretation, but
retained the power of the original. (I've always wanted to hear it
    sung with a gospel choir...)

Extreme did a really tight Queen medley. They're obviously very
talented (and I never thought I'd hear Love of My Life!), but I thought
their set was kind of manipulative. They shouldn't have included songs
that others were planning to play later.

Liza's appearance was interesting -- if Freddie was watching, he must
have gotten a big kick out of it. :-) Now, if she could just have
    found the right pitch!

I thought Axl was being a self-absorbed jerk. But his appearance in
the Days of Our Lives documentary after the MTV concert airing
partially redeemed him for me. A Night at the Opera was my first
    "important" album, too.

No matter how everyone performed, I'm convinced it was a fitting
    goodbye.

I watched bits and pieces of it. Boy, was it spliced together....huge
    commerical breaks.

Wasn't that terribly impressed. (sorry kids, so shoot me).

Could have been much better. Wasn't.

    ::insert totally shallow musing::

And howcome they never have any goodlooking MTV *guys*, but they
procure bodacious babes to basically sit around and say nothing? I
know we're catering to the 18-34 years old males, but they've got to
figure there's some girls out there watching? The guys have got Cindy
Crawford and her Amazing Trick Hair, and I've got Kurt Loder.

    Oh boy.

And I'd take Kurt Loder of Cindi Crawford every time. I like Kurt and Cindi
can't even read cue boards. At least Kurt understands music and the music
business.

Besides I don't even think that she's that good looking...

Incoming, I know...

Oh, content wise, I'd certainly think Kurt Loder is more qualified to
be hosting an event than Cindy C.

However, on a purely shallow, self serving, whoa-what-a-babe level,
    Kurt scores pretty derned low.
